Chapter 5
Naruto was at a loss when Ibiki, the main proctor, explained what the test would entail. It was to be a written test with 10 questions. One was to be answered 15 minutes prior to the end of the exam. Naruto found the rules interesting. He figured that it must be okay to cheat, so long as you didn't get caught.
The issue for Naruto was of course his blindness. He did not read the same way that the other people read. He also could not answer any questions without raising questions. It was difficult enough to explain how he knew the exact location of people. Others just put it down to his other attuned senses. They didn't really know his true story.
"A-ano. I'm Hyuuga Hinata." Exclaimed the bluenette beside Naruto. "It's n-nice to m-meet you." She continued, blushing slightly.
Naruto was slightly embarrassed, and scratched his head slightly when he started speaking. "It's nice to meet you too." He smiled at her.
"Good luck in the test." She exclaimed, pointing her fingers together and looking at her paper.
"Good luck to you too." Naruto exclaimed, giving his foxy grin.
Naruto was at a loss for words. He spoke constantly about the heirs of the clans of Konoha with Jiraiya, so he knew who the young Hyuuga was. He was baffled by her kindness. From what he thought, the Hyuuga's were pretty stuck up.
"You may begin the test now." Ibiki ordered, causing Naruto to snap out of his stupor.
Naruto could feel Sakura and Shiho's eyes on him. He didn't fully explain the extent of his power, but decided to put their minds at ease.
'Will be okay.' Was etched onto both the girls' desks by an unknown force. They both knew that Naruto wrote it with his exceptional control over wind. This put them at ease and they both completed the test with time to spare.
Naruto was bored, he had sat in the seat for just over a half an hour. He had heard shinobi being eliminated left and right. He could also distinguish how some of the shinobi were cheating. He knew that the proctors also knew, but he figured that, unless it was blatantly obvious that they cheated, it was okay.
"Okay time's up." Ibiki called, waiting for the shinobi to put down their pencils. Ibiki had noticed Naruto when he first entered the room. He had taken that moment to size him up. He knew who Naruto was and wanted to see what he was capable of.
He was impressed with Naruto's ability to inform his teammates that he was okay. Many of the proctors missed the expenditure of chakra, because it was so miniscule, Ibiki however took note of it and stored it away for later.
A part from that use of chakra, Naruto had remained silent in one place. Ibiki thought that he looked as if he was meditating. Truth was, Naruto started meditating to get an idea of how strong each of the shinobi in the room were.
There were 2 shinobi that caused him some voice of concern. One was the silver haired Konoha nin Kabuto. He felt as if he had a lot more power than he displayed. He could have easily taken care of the three sound nin, without as much as breaking a sweat.
The second character was one of the Kusa nin. Naruto could feel the strength behind him. It was dark and twisted, but had some remanent of power. He also masked his strength really well, and it took Naruto longer than possible to gauge the Kusa nin's power.
"Before we move onto the last question, there is a new rule I want to implement." This got all the shinobi's attention. Even Naruto was intrigued by this turn of events. "You must choose whether you want to take the last question or not." This caused an outburst from some of the shinobi.
"If you don't take the last question, you, along with your team, fail." Ibiki intoned, causing the shinobi to quieten down. "If you do take the final question and get it wrong… you will no longer be able to become a Chunin level shinobi." At this, the complaints were raised once more.
"But there are people here who took the Chunin exams before and failed." Kiba spoke up, indicating Kabuto, without mentioning his name.
"They were fortunate then, because they did not have me as a proctor." Ibiki replied, causing the shinobi to quieten down once more. "Now… the choice is yours."
Here and there shinobi started raising their hands and refusing to take the final question. As soon as the first person quit, others quickly followed suit. Naruto noticed that the young girl beside him was shaking. She looked as if she was going to quit. Remembering his mission parameters, Naruto stood in his spot. Raising his hand and pointing in the direction of the door. "Who do you think your fooling scar face?" He exclaimed, causing a stir amongst the participants. "A shinobi is a shinobi, it doesn't matter what type you are, Genin, Chunin, Jonin, you are still a shinobi." He finished. Seating himself once more.
Everyone was looking at him as if he was an idiot. For one, he wasn't looking at Ibiki, and although what he said was true, it made no sense at all… especially in terms of this context.
Hinata felt courage rising in herself from Naruto's words. She was close to giving up, if it weren't for Naruto, she probably would have.
Ibiki smirked. He knew what Naruto had done. He deliberately made himself the focus and drew all attention to himself, but he also made it a comedy by pointing at the door. Ibiki wasn't stupid and he had some sense of what Naruto was capable of. It showed in the way Naruto addressed him. Naruto being blind, shouldn't know that Ibiki's face consisted of scars. With these thoughts at the back of his mind Ibiki spoke once more. "Congratulations to those still in this room… You have passed the first test."
At this, some of the participants whooped for joy, others looked confused. "What about the 10th question." Asked the Suna nin, Tamari.
"There is no 10th question… well you could say the choice that you made to take the question could be considered the 10th question." Here, many of the participants looked more confused, some were even irritated. Ibiki started to unfasten his bandana, showing his head to the participants. "A Chunin may not have a choice but to carry out the mission, especially if there was low Intel, and you don't know what lies ahead. You can't just give up on a mission." Most of the participants were shocked by what they saw. "Information is important and it could be the difference between life and death." Ibiki stated, whilst fastening his bandanna once more.
Just as he finished, a huge crash came through the window, and a women appeared in front of the proctor, standing at the ready. Behind her was a banner that read 'Second Proctor of the Chunin exams, Mitarashi Anko'.
"You're early." Ibiki said from behind the banner.
"Hmmm, it seems you lost your touch Ibiki." The new proctor stated, ignoring his statement altogether. "There are twenty six teams still here. Never the less, I'll cut that down to half by the end of the second exam." She exclaimed, looking at the participants with a predatory look. "Follow me… and keep up if you can." Anko stated, before jumping through the window once more.
At the proctor's behest, all the participants followed. Some of the participants were surprised that Naruto was keeping up with them, being blind and all.
Ibiki walked around the room collecting the papers of the participants. He approached Naruto's paper and took notice that there were answers to the questions. He tried to get a closer look at the paper, but it disintegrated and scattered with an invisible breeze. He smirked once more, not really believing how skilled a shinobi Naruto was.
Anko stopped at a set of large gates. "This is the arena for the second exam." The participants looked at the gate, and at the forests beyond, noting how extravagant the trees were. "The second part is a survival test, in there." Anko stated, pointing over her shoulder to the large forest.
At this, some the participants got excited, others didn't look as interested, and a few were nerve-racked and in fear. Naruto, being himself, laughed out loud and said. "This place doesn't look scary."
Everyone looked at him once more. Anko, hearing the outburst, threw a kunai straight at his head. Instead of hitting, like the Jonin was expecting, the kunai went straight past Naruto without so much as leaving a mark.
Anko was impressed, and appeared behind Naruto with a kunai to his neck. "For someone who is blind, you sure make a lot of jokes." She stated. At this, Naruto had a mini-flashback to when he met a wild, purpled haired kid whom said the exact same words to him at the academy. It was his first, last and only day at the academy.
The Kusa nin that was emanating a strange/strong chakra reappeared behind Anko, and insisted on giving her the kunai which she threw.
"Don't sneak up on me like that, you might get hurt." Anko exclaimed, with a semi-psychotic smirk.
"I'm sorry, it's just that I get a little excited when shinobi face off." The Kusa nin spoke. This caused a shiver to go up many of the participants' spine.
Naruto had felt that Hinata was feeling very scared, and decided to boost her confidence, hence the reason for the outburst. He knew, however, that this was only temporary and that she really needed to find her own strength and courage.
Team 7 looked on without a care in the world. Sai had his creepy smile, but it never reached his eyes. Sasuke looked bored and Kira wanted to hurt someone. Those near her could almost feel her blood lust, Naruto sure did.
"The one who barks the loudest, has the weakest bite." Anko whispered to Naruto, before disappearing and reappearing in front of the group.
"Now as I was saying." She continued looking at Naruto. "This is the arena for the second exam. It is to be a survival test." Some of the participants' murmured, and you could hear a 'Troublesome' thrown in as well.
"The purpose is to get to the middle of the forest, where a tower is set up for those that make it. In order to pass the test, you will need two scrolls." Here Anko pulled two scrolls out of her coat pocket. One read Heaven, the other reading Earth. "Each team will get one scroll." Here, a sense of understanding came to the participants, especially when Anko mentioned that she would cut the participants teams in half.
"All members of the team must be alive and not incapacitated when reaching the tower. You also only have 5 days to make it there, afterwards, you fail."
"What about food?" Asked a Konoha participant. Naruto recognised him as another heir to Konoha's prestigious clan. 'Akamichi Choji' Naruto thought, whilst getting a read on the shinobi.
"Well, there is an abundant of food available in the forest. But do be careful, you may find yourself the prey to some in there." Anko said, pointing once more to the forest.
"Now enough questions…" Anko said, before handing out pieces of papers to the participants. "Sign these waiver forms. They ensure that Konoha is not liable for whatever happens in the forest."
"As for you." Anko said looking at Naruto. "Verbal confirmation should suffice. No need to sign anything." She continued.
Anko knew that Naruto was blind and was giving him a chance to pull out. She remembered a blind boy just like him, one whom she had bullied once when she was in the academy. She even repeated the words she said back then today.
