"Son." her dad said. "What does he mean?"
Savannah looked her dad in the eye. "He has a two months old son with his former best friend."
"What?" her mother said.
"It's a long story. He slept with her before he asked me to marry him. He didn't know she was pregnant because she left. She wrote to him later and told him."
"When did you find out?"
"Before we got married."
"Why would you marry him Savannah? He cheated on you." Mark said.
"Because he's everything I've ever wanted and I love him."
Derek weaved through the traffic as a million thoughts ran through his head. He felt guilty because he didn't go see one of the most important people to him. What was wrong with D? Why did he need to be taken to the hospital? He should be there with his son, not having dinner with Savannah and her family. He knew what he needed to do.
He was out of his truck as soon as he parked. He ran into to ER. At the nurses desk he asked for D. They told him he was in room 7. He walked swiftly down the hall. As he got closer to he could hear his sons cries. An invisible fist clenched around his heart. He walked into the room and saw Pen standing on the left, tears running down her face as a doctor examined their son. The petite woman was talking softly to D but he was red and screaming. Pen looked at him and Derek went to her. She practically fell into his arms crying.
"Shhh baby girl. I'm here." The grip she had on his shirt tightened at his words. "What happened?"
"He had been cranky for a couple of days." She sniffled. "Nothing I did seemed to work. Earlier tonight he started running a fever. It slowly started creeping up no matter what we tried. He wouldn't stop crying so we brought him here."
"Where's Reid?"
"In the waiting room. He knew you would want to be in here with D."
"Why didn't you call me?"
"I really thought he was just cranky, actually just missing you. He hadn't ran a fever until tonight."
The doctor interrupted their conversation. "Ms. Garcia."
"Yes."
They both moved closer to the bed. "Derek has an infection in both ears. I'm going to give him some Tylenol and an antibiotic shot. I'm going to have him admitted only because he so little and his fever was so high. The nurse will come administer my orders and as soon as a room is available, they'll move him. If he does well and his fever goes down I'll release him tomorrow. Any questions?"
"Will we be able to stay with him?" Pen asked.
"Yes." The doctor said. "You're breastfeeding right?"
"I do both."
"You can still breastfeed him even if he only eats a little at a time." she said. "I'll be back to check on him."
Pen was cooing to her son before the doctor was out the door when he started to whimper.
"Its ok baby boy, you are going to feel better soon."
"Hey little man, daddy's here."
At the sound of Derek's voice D started crying. His cries increased in volume until D picked him up. Derek winced when he felt how hot his son was.
"Daddy's here D. I've got you."
Pen watched as her son's cries decreased with each word Derek said. Derek rocked D as he paced the little room. It looked like he finally going to sleep when a nurse came in.
"Hi. I'm Zoe and I've got the shot and fever meds for this big guy. Daddy if you could lay him back in the bed."
She put a syringe of pink med into D's mouth and slowly pushed the med into his mouth speaking softly to him the whole time. When she gave him the shot Pen turned around. She couldn't watch. He started crying before the she finished.
"I'm sorry big guy but you should start feeling better soon. I promise. Daddy it's ok if you want to pick him up."
Derek didn't waste any time picking him up. After crying so much he finally fell asleep. Instead if laying him down Derek kept him in his arms.
"I'm going to go tell Spence that they're keeping him and for him to go home."
"I'm going to stay here."
She nodded and walked back to the waiting room. She found Spence sitting in one of the chairs.
"Hey how's D?"
"He has an infection in both ears. They're keeping him overnight since his fever is high. They gave him an antibiotic shot and some Tylenol. They haven't moved him yet. Derek is with him."
"I know you'll want to stay with him."
"I am but you should go home and sleep. I know you just got home earlier. I'll be fine."
"Derek staying too?"
"I don't know. He hasn't said anything."
"Do you need anything before I go?"
"No but thank you."
"I'll call you before I come in the morning."
"Ok."
He kissed her before he left. She was just about to go back to D's room when a hand on her arm jerked her around to find an angry Savannah in front of her.
"Where's my husband?"
"Let go of my arm."
"I said where is my husband."
"And I said let go of my arm."
Pen didn't notice the two people behind Savannah until the man spoke.
"Sweetheart let her go."
Savannah dropped her arm like she had been burned. Pen recognized the two people as Savannah's parents. She really wasn't in the mood to deal with her dramatics.
"Derek is with his son."
"Which room is he in?"
"I'm not about to tell you that. You are not to come anywhere near my son and you know that."
"I want to talk to my husband right now."
"I don't give a damn what you want. My son is sick and needs his daddy. I really don't care if you have a problem with that."
"Your just probably making all this up so you can see Derek."
"I wouldn't use my son that way and besides I see Derek all the time. The first thing he does when he comes back from a case is come to my home, to see our son."
"You bitch." She hissed at Pen right before she slapped her. Her mother called out her name but what got her attention was the shout that came from Derek. She watched as he came closer to her, anger written all over his face. He grabbed her by the arm as gently as he could with all the rage shooting through his body.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" he asked then looked at Pen. "Did you slap her?"
"She wouldn't tell me where you were. I wanted to talk to you and she was trying to keep me away from. I just slapped her when she called me a bitch."
Pen didn't even try to defend herself. She knew it was useless with Savannah.
"I doubt she called you that. You're not even supposed to be anywhere near D." he drew his hand away from her. "Pen, D is finally sleeping and they are about to move him. I just came out here to get you. Go back with him while I take care of this and I'll meet you in his room."
"Get her the hell away from my son Derek. As soon as D is out of here, I'll file a restraining order. That is the last time you put your hands on me."
He waited for Pen to be out of sight before he turned on Savannah. "What the hell where you thinking by coming here."
"I was thinking that I wanted to be with my husband."
"Go home Savannah. I don't want you here."
"I'll leave when you come with me."
"I'm not leaving. D is being admitted and I'm staying here with him."
"You're staying with her."
"Savannah, let's go home." Mark said.
"I'm not leaving." She said. "My place is with my husband."
"I don't care if you stay or go but you stay away from Pen and my son."
He turned to leave when Mark caught his arm. Derek looked at him. "You've got a lot of explaining to do."
"I don't have to explain anything to you or anyone else. Let Savannah explain things but I doubt she will tell you the truth."
He pulled his arm out of Mark's grip and walked to D's room. Just as he walking in the door, a nurse was getting ready to move him. He looked at Pen.
"They're moving him to the 4th floor room 468. She said we could follow her there."
Derek took her hand in his and they followed their son out of the room. D slept through the journey up to his room. He woke up when they put him in a hospital crib but fell back to sleep. After he was checked out by another nurse from that floor she looked at Pen.
"You'll be staying with him?"
"Yes we both will." Pen said.
"I'll bring in a recliner that you can sleep in. His fevers going down a little which is good. Feed him like you usually do. If you want to bottle feed him there is formula in the cabinet along with diapers and everything else you need. I'll be back to check on him. Call if you need anything."
Pen touched her son's cheek and started crying. "I was so scared. He wouldn't stop crying and I couldn't do anything. It felt like his fever came out of nowhere. How long had he had this infection and I didn't know. I'm his mother I should have known."
"Pen quite blaming yourself. Just because you're his mom doesn't mean you know or have to know everything. He's going to be fine once the medicine starts working."
Derek ran his hand over his son's body. "I was scared on the drive over here. I didn't know what was wrong with him. All I knew is that I needed to see him, be with him."
"He was so cranky I thought he really was missing you. Even though you're not with him all the time, he knows when you are and he's used to that. I really thought that was all this was. You had been gone for almost two weeks. I think this was the longest time he's been without you. This was a tough case and I didn't want you to worry about him. I knew you would if I told you."
"It's ok Pen. Next time just tell me when he's cranky, sick, or whatever. I need to know."
"I know and I'm sorry."
They spent the next couple hours just watching their son sleep. He woke up long enough to be fed and fell back asleep. The nurse brought in the extra chair and they both got some much needed sleep. While Pen was feeding D, he watched her. She sang to him, she talked to him, showered him with kisses. Sitting there looking at them he realized two things: one he wanted to see this picture in front of him every night, two he wanted Pen.
The doctor released D the next afternoon with a prescription for meds. Spence had to go the BAU since Derek took the day off. Savannah was blowing up his phone and Derek kept ignoring her calls. Derek drove Pen home stopping to fill his prescription. They also stopped to pick up a pizza for lunch. They gave D a bath before putting him to sleep. They went to the kitchen and starting eating. Derek looked at Pen and saw the tired look on her face. He didn't want to add to her stress but it was now or never.
"Pen we need to talk."
