Penelope stared at Derek with a stunned look on her face but he wasn't the only one with that face. She turned to look at Savannah and wanted to smack the smug look off her face. Aaron broke the awkward silence.
"Congratulation to you both."
"Thank you Agent Hotchner. We are so happy, aren't we Derek?"
"Yeah."
"Well I need to go and check on my son." Penelope said. "Aaron I'll go by there later."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
She stepped into the elevator as soon as it opened. When it closed, she let the tears fall. She made to her car without running into anyone. On the ride to get D, she thought about how this new baby was going to affect the relationship Derek had with his son. He wouldn't be able to be with his son all the time when he wasn't away on a case. He would have to split his time between his two children. She also knew Savannah wouldn't give him a divorce now. She had him right where she wanted him. He would never abandon his child. He would be forever linked to Savannah as he was forever linked to her. By the time she picked up D and made it home, Derek had called her three times. She didn't want to talk to him right now. She had to think about how this news affected her son. She had to protect him no matter what.
Derek paced Hotch's office for ten minutes while he just watched, not saying anything. He couldn't keep silent any longer.
"What are you going to Derek?"
"I don't know."
"Are you sure it's yours?"
"I don't know that either. The last time I slept with her was the night Penelope called to tell me she was labor. She's as many weeks as D is. What else am I to think?"
"Do you think she is capable of having cheating on you?"
"I would say no but who knows. We are talking about Savannah and she would do anything to make me go back to her."
"Are you?"
"I want to say no but I'm not sure. I won't abandon my child just like I didn't abandon D."
"You know what ever chance you had of getting Penelope to forgive you and take a chance on you is out the window. I know you were trying to get her to give you a chance but she's with Spencer. You should just leave her alone and just be parents to your son."
"I know." he said. "Damn it why did this have to happen now. I want my family with Penelope not with Savannah." He said. "I probably lost the only chance I had to make her change her mind. I know something changed between Spence and her but she wouldn't tell me. "
"Before you talk to Penelope I think you need to figure out what you are going to do about Savannah."
"I know that too."
"Just in case Penelope doesn't want to talk to you, you should know that she starts work on Monday."
"She's coming back."
"Not with us but with Team B. She doesn't want to work with us."
"What is she going to do with D?"
"Put him in the daycare here. That is where we were going when you stepped out of the elevator with Savannah."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"She was going to talk to you later but Savannah sprung her happy news before she could."
"I need to talk to her."
"No you don't. Leave her alone and let her come to terms with what she heard."
"I don't know if I can do that."
Derek left work and called Penelope but didn't answer. He decided to go to her house to look for her when he saw her sitting at the park that was down the road from her home. He parked and got out. He walked slowly to her where she sat. D was in a stroller in front of her. He stood just behind her. He didn't know if she knew he was there until she turned to look at him.
"We need to talk Penelope."
"I know."
"This doesn't change anything."
"What are you taking about?"
"I still want my family."
"Don't you get it Derek? We aren't a family and we never will be. You are having a baby with Savannah and you will have your family. I won't stop you from seeing your son but I am going to have to restrict the amount of time you see him."
"What? Why?"
"You are going to have another child. You won't be able to be with D every moment you're not on a case. I don't want to D to suffer when your other child is born. D won't be your priority anymore and I understand that. You will have to learn to split your time between the two. You will be a full time daddy to your baby with Savannah and a part time father with D. Don't get me wrong and think that I am mad because I'm not. At the same time I need to look out for D. I don't want him to suffer when he doesn't see you every day so starting next weekend you will see D only on the weekends but only at your mother's new place. I will not allow him under the same roof as Savannah."
"You can't do that Penelope."
"I can and I will. He's already used to seeing you every day that when you are on a case that he gets cranky not just because you are gone because Spence is gone too. The two men in his life go away for days and he misses them. It going to be harder when he's older and you have a new baby. So I have to do what is best for my son."
"It doesn't have to be that way. I'm not going push D to the side when the baby comes. That won't ever happen."
"Derek, you are away from home on cases that can go on for days. Sometimes you don't even get but a day in between cases. You are going to have to divide your time up between the two and sometimes there won't be time. I doubt Savannah is going to let you pick D over her child."
"Penelope …"
"Go home Derek. I need to get D home."
Penelope stood up and walked away with D leaving Derek behind. He watched until she turned the corner and then he left.
Penelope was in the kitchen cooking dinner when Spence got home. He walked through the living room and saw D sleeping in the play pen since he was too big to sleep comfortable in the bassinet. He went to the fridge and took out a bottle of water and leaned against the counter. He studied Penelope as she stood on the stove.
"What's wrong Pen?"
"How do you know somethings wrong?"
"I'm a profiler, your body language and the fact that you didn't tell me hi."
She sighed. "I guess you haven't heard the wonderful news."
"No, what news and from whom."
"It seems Derek is going to be a daddy again."
"What? Savannah's pregnant?"
"Yep."
"How do you know?"
She turned to sit at the table. "I had an appointment with the Director to see if I could my job back as a tech. I won't be working for the team but I will be working with Team B."
"You're going back to work. How come you didn't tell me?"
"I didn't know if I could get my job back. Anyway he said for me to check out the daycare there. So I went to talk to Hotch and we were going to check it out when Derek and Savannah got off the elevator and she couldn't wait to tell us the happy news."
"You don't sound happy."
"I'm not happy for the reasons you think." she said. "I not thrilled because this means that D won't have Derek's full attention. Which I understand and knew someday that if he had children with Savannah that D would always take a back seat."
"How does he know the baby is his?"
"I don't know and that isn't my problem."
"Well is seems she would do anything to keep him from divorcing her."
"Derek would never abandon his child. So I guess D will be having a brother or sister sometime in November."
"Besides how this will affect D how do you feel about it personally? He wanted you back."
"Spence no matter what Derek wanted he was never going to get me back. I'm going to have to forgive and I will. Then we will co-parent D like adults. He found me at the park and I told him that I needed to protect D and that starting next weekend he will get D every other weekend and that all other visits will stop."
"How did he take that?"
"He didn't like it but I'm not going to be fighting with Savannah because he is spending time over here."
"I understand why you are doing it but there is one thing you know better than anyone. He's not going to give up."
"There is nothing to give up. He's having a family with his wife and he needs to focus on that, for all our sakes."
Pen went back to the stove and check on what she was cooking. She knew that Spence was looking at her but she had to keep her face passive or he would see how much Derek having a baby with Savannah was killing her.
Derek knocked on the door of his former home and waited. It took ten minutes for Savannah to answer. She smiled as she held the door open.
"You didn't have to knock to come into your own home." Derek walked through the door and she looked behind him. "Where are your things?"
"I didn't bring my things."
"Why not?"
"I not moving back in." he said. "Look Savannah, I will be here for you for whatever you need. I will be here for my child but I will not be with you. Our relationship is over and I still plan to continue with the divorce."
"You're going to abandon me while I'm pregnant with our child?"
"Like I said, I will be here for you while you are pregnant but once the child is born I will be here for him or her. You and I will never get back together, for any reason."
"It's because of her isn't it?"
"No Savannah. It was wrong for us to get married in the first place. I'm not happy with you and having a baby isn't going to fix that. I'm sorry but that is the way I feel."
"No Derek that isn't the way it's going to be. You are going to move back in here and be the attentive husband you are supposed to be. If you don't, you will never see your child again. I won't be like that bitch and call you when I'm in labor. I will disappear and you will be left wondering how your child is doing. Is that what you want? I believe you already went through that. Want to do that again?"
"To get what you want you are going to force me to move back in here." he said going to the door. "I'm not playing any games with you and you forcing me to do something I don't want to do are over. If you do anything to that baby, you will regret it. Oh and one other thing, my plan to get my family back is still on. You'll be hearing from my lawyer."
Derek slammed the door on his way out and Savannah let out a scream. She'd be damned if Derek's think he was going to get his way.
