Derek backed her against the door, plundering her mouth as he shut the door. She gripped his shirt. He broke the kiss, both of them breathing heavy. He pressed his forehead against hers.

"Where's D?"

"Asleep in his room."

"I missed him so much so I'm going to see him and then we are going to talk about what just happened."

She nodded and watched him turn a walk to his son's room. She took a deep breathe, went to the kitchen, poured a glass of wine and drank it in one gulp. She poured another glass and went to sit on the couch to wait.

D opened the door slowly and walked to the crib. He gazed down at his sleeping son and ran a hand from the top of his head to his toes. He had grown so much in the time he has been gone. Seeing him here and there and on skype just wasn't the same as seeing him in person. He missed him so much. He wanted to hold him so bad but he didn't want to wake him. He leaned down, kissed his head and whispered he loved him. He went back out the door and closed it slowly. He saw Penelope on the sofa and went to the kitchen to pour him a glass of wine. He went and sat next to her. He gazed at her.

"Want to tell what that was all about?"

"Derek, why do you want to be with me? Answer me honestly."

"I had an image of what I wanted and I thought that's what I had but then I realized what it was. Just an image. What I really wanted was something totally different."

"How are they different?"

"I thought I wanted Savannah. She was career driven like me, she's beautiful, and she's sophisticated, cares about people. Everything I wanted in a woman but when I had that I realized that isn't what I want at all."

"What do you want?"

"I want somebody that understands my job and what it means to me. I want someone who makes me feel loved, asks me how my day was when I come home. One who actually likes to talk to me instead of telling me what to do. I don't want someone who wears a mask in front of people then takes it off when we get home."

"You still married her."

"That was the biggest mistake I ever made." he said. "That night we slept together, I knew you were what I really wanted but you were not part of my plan I had set for myself."

"I wasn't good enough for you."

"No. No. that's not it at all. We were friends, best friends but I don't think I wanted anything to mess that up but I ended up doing just that. I shouldn't have acted like an asshole and I'm sorry for everything I did that hurt you."

"D doesn't have anything to do with you wanting to be with me?"

"In a way he does but he's not the only reason. Sure I want us to be a family, a real family. I want to be with him all the time, not just on the weekends. When you were gone and I didn't know where you were at, I felt miserable without you. I wanted to hear your voice, see your smile. I wanted to be able to go to your office, open the door, and there you would be with a smile on your face when you saw that it was me. I wanted to see you pregnant with my son. I wanted to feel him move inside you. Those are the things that I wanted and couldn't have. I know I shouldn't have married Savannah. I know I shouldn't have let her threatened me into marrying her. What kind of man am I that I listened to her? I don't want to be married to her and now I'm stuck in a marriage that I can't get out of until the baby is born."

"I'm not going to deny that you hurt me with everything you said and did but I'm also to blame because I knew you were in a relationship. I shouldn't have acted on my illusions that night but I don't regret it. It gave me my son and for that alone I could never regret it. I regret the situation we are in. Sometimes I think things would have been different if I stayed but will never know. I know you have a lot of problems right now but I'm willing to give this a shot. I'll be seen as the other woman but I'm already seen like that. We have to go slow. I'm not ready to jump into bed with you, not yet."

"I could deal with that. We can go out on dates, together and as a family. I'd like to take to make a trip to Chicago so my family can see D."

"What do you think they will say when they see me instead of Savannah?"

"I don't care what they think but some of them know that you had my son. They remember you're from the times I took you there and they want to see D. Mom has shown them pictures and they think he is adorable."

"I'm sure they do." She said. "Savannah is going to be a big problem. I just don't trust her."

"I don't either and I'm taking all the precautions I can."

"Let's keep our dating on low key for now."

"We can do that. Can I ask you a question?" she nodded. "I haven't seen our son in a bit, can I stay the night?"

She looked at him. "You can stay but no funny business and you can sleep in my bed."

"I'll go get my bag."

Derek finished his shower and took another quick look at D before he went to Penelope's bedroom. She was already in bed and was waiting for him. He pulled the blankets back and slid in next to her. He laid on his back and stared at the ceiling. He felt her turn toward him.

"What are you thinking about?"

"You. Us."

"About?"

"How right this feels and stupid I was."

"The past is the past, leave it there and go to sleep. Your son gets up early."

Derek woke up with Pen wrapped around him with a glove. She had on leg in between his and her head on his chest. He didn't want to move because he loved the way she felt in his arms but D was begging to stir. He moved her slowly and she turned around to her side. He quietly moved and went to his son. He opened the door, leaving it open while he approached the crib. He smiled when he saw his son.

"Hey there big boy, I've missed you." he said picking him up while D started kicking his feet arms and started talking to him. Naturally Derek understand anything he was saying. "Are you happy to see me? I'm so happy to see you." He took him to the changing table. "Do you need a clean diaper? Yes you do." He changed his diaper and snapped his pajamas. "You've gotten bigger in the days I've been gone. I don't like that I miss all the little things. I heard from your mommy that you are trying to crawl. You haven't mastered that yet huh. I'm sure it won't take you long."

He walked to the kitchen and took one of the premade bottled out. He warmed it up and added a little cereal in it. The whole time Derek was fixing his bottle, D had his head on his shoulder. Derek patted his shoulder while he went back to his room and sat in the rocking chair.

"I have the day off big guy, what are we going to do huh? Shall we go to the park, go swimming, or go shopping. It's been a while since I've taken you to the toy store." D finished his bottle and Derek burped him. "Let's go see mommy."

Derek went to Pen's room and found her awake smiling at them. He sat on the bed and sat D on his lap facing her.

"Hey little man, have you already eaten?"

"I fed him a bottle and I added a little cereal."

"He likes it that way instead of eating it with a spoon." She said. "He's getting picky. Your mom said to add a little sweet to his cereal but I haven't started that."

"He might like it that way." he said. "What do you want to do today?"

"I don't know."

"Let's go to the park, eat lunch, and then we can take him to the toy store."

"I thought we were going with low key."

"We are but I want to spend the day out with both of you. Derek he has enough toys."

"You can never have too many toys."

"Between your mom and you, I don't have to buy anything."

"That's a good thing."

"Let me take a shower, you play with your son, and when I get out I'll fix breakfast for us. What time do you want to leave? It's barely 8."

"Around 11."

"D will have fallen asleep by then so he won't be cranky so that's good."

After breakfast and waiting for D to wake up for his nap, they headed to the park. They drove to the one closer to Derek's home because it was bigger. They parked and he carried D and they headed to the swings. D had a little cap on that had his initial. He also had on a little t-shirt and shorts. Derek mentioned that his shoed were a little snug, so they were going to the mall later to buy some shoes. Derek put D in the baby swing and started pushing the swing. D let out a laugh that made his parents laugh. He started bouncing his seat. They stayed there for a while and then moved to the slide. Penelope watched Derek climb the slide with their son, sat down, and went down holding D. D squealed, started bouncing again. Penelope snapped pictures and then switched places with Derek. He snapped pictures as well. They moved to where the pond was and showed D the ducks. One approached them looking for something to eat but left as soon as it realized they had nothing. After about an hour and half, they left and went to eat. They settled for Mexican food. Once they were seated, they ordered and Pen took out D's baby food.

When their food came, D didn't want any of his food. He whined until Derek fed him some rice. He stopped whining and smiled. So they fed him rice in between spoons of baby food. They left and D fell asleep, full from lunch.

Derek gazed at his son in the back. "He has an appetite doesn't he?"

"I know. I told you he was getting picky."

"The next stop was the toy store where Derek bought a ridiculous amount of toys. He also bought him new bottles, blankets, and towels. Penelope just shook her head. It was still too early before dinner, so they went to the mall. They shopped for D and Penelope. She wanted some new clothes for work. Derek wanted to pay for them but she put her foot down and said no. By the time they left they were tired and decided to cook at home. They stopped at the grocery store and decided to go to Derek's. He cooked while she went through the bag of toys and took out the one she wanted. It was a basketball hoop for babies. She opened it and put it in front of D, who was sitting in her lap. She showed him the ball and tossed it in for him. D laughed and clapped his hands.

Derek watched Penelope and D from the kitchen. He watched her play with him. Her smile was radiant and she looked beautiful. She put D in front of the toy and let him explore it. This is what he wanted. This is what he wanted to come home to and if he was lucky, this was just the start they needed.

Savannah sat down across from the man in the booth. She had on dark sunglasses.

"What have you got?"

"I've been following them for a week. Here are the pictures."

He slid an envelope towards her and she opened it. Out spilled pictures of just Penelope and D. then she saw the ones of the three of them at the park, at the mall, leaving work. She also saw pictures of Derek being let in Pen's apartment and the three of them going into Derek's. She crumbled the last picture of Derek and Penelope kissing.

"She is never alone unless she is at her apartment. When she arrives at work, someone meets her. When she leaves, she has someone with her if he's not around, otherwise it's him. He spends most nights at her place but she had stayed at his place once. What do you want me to do?"

"Keep following them for now. I'll let you know when I want you to stop. Do you have their addresses?" he nodded. "Give them to me."

The man wrote them down, slid the paper across the table. She grabbed it and then left, taking the pictures with her. He wondered what she wanted with that couple. They looked a nice family, a happy one at that. When his friend called him and told him he had a job for him, he didn't ask questions. Now he wished he would have because something about her was off.
