Really sorry it has been so long! I hope you enjoy this update! Fingers crossed that I can wrap this up in 5-6 chapters (one of which is partially written). I will try my hardest to be more faithful with my updates.

I'm sorry for any typos/errors this is unbetaed and written and posted on my phone.

I don't own Harry Potter.

Remus was just sitting down with his morning tea when there was a knock at the door. He held little hope that it was Dora with Teddy. Last night had started so well, but ended as badly as he feared. Teddy had reacted to news if the divorce quite... strongly. Remus knew the boy held some hopes of his parents being together, but he thought he had discouraged them enough. He and Dora agreed shortly after Teddy's outburst, and several failed attempts on both of their parts to call him back down to talk, that he should go home and wait for Teddy to settle down a bit. She explained that when he was like this, it was usually best to give him time to make sense of it on his own and stay at arm's length-supportive, but not suffocating. Even as a very small child, Dora explained, Teddy had liked his space. Later in the night, Dora had sent a patronous to tell him that Teddy was sleeping but had still been unwilling to talk to her. She promised to keep him updated, and then the silver wolf had dissolved, leaving him to his own thoughts.

In that light, Remus was not expecting an early morning visitor. Until recently, any visitor at all was a rarity. Another unfortunate side effect of withdrawing from Dora had meant withdrawing from their mutual friends-which meant almost all of his friends that were precious few in numbers. He did not think he had seen all the Order at once since the battle and the funerals that followed. He saw them all separately with enough frequency to not feel alienated: Molly and Arthur (and whomever else happened to be at the burrow) for tea about once a week, dinner with Harry, Ginny, and the kids every so often, a pint with Hagrid, Kingsley, Ron or Bill occasionally, Neville whenever he went to Diagon Alley, Hermione whenever she dropped in on him... He was not alone by any means. No one made a habit of dropping by at half-eight in the morning, though. Curious as to the identity of his visitor, he switched the kettle back on and answered to door.

"Minerva," he greeted in surprise.

"Good morning Remus," she said primly, "Might I have a word?"

Despite her rather advanced age, McGonagall cut a rather intimidating figure. She never completely recovered from the curse damage sustained during the war, so she walked with a cane incase her body became too fatigued. However, she barely leaned on it, standing with proper posture. All these factors considered, it was no surprise that her request for a word left no room for refusal.

"Certainly," Remus replied, fully opening to door for her, "Please take a seat."

She brushed past him and his proffered and settled primly on the edge of the arm chair. "I may be old, Remus, but I find my legs still function passably well," she quipped.

"Of course, Minerva, sorry. Tea?" he offered.

"That is an offer I will never decline."

Remus chuckled lowly and went about preparing a cup for his friend and former professor, and a fresh one for himself as his had gone tepid. He carried out the tea and a plate of biscuits and took a seat on the couch, directly across the coffee table from Minerva.

"There was something you wished to discuss with me?" he asked nervously.

She took a delicate sip of tea before answering, "I am coming to offer you your old job, the Defense against the Dark Arts post."

Remus cleared his throat awkwardly. "You have offered this post before, and I am afraid not much has changed."

"Hasn't it? Am I wrong in believing that you are back in contact with your son?"

"You are not wrong."

"Then I do not see why you must refuse. You said that you would not take a post at Hogwarts because you intended to stay out of Teddy's life. If you now intend to act as his father, I do not see why you should not take the job that you would enjoy. I daresay I can offer you a better salary than the family that hires you as tutor."

Remus scrubbed his hand through his hair. "Actually, the youngest two girls are off to Hogwarts this year. It would seem I am out of a job again. I haven't told Dora yet. I have enough saved to make it quite awhile, and my current employers are going to give me a good reference."

"This is ridiculous, Remus. I distinctly remember sitting with you for your career planning meeting when you were fifteen years old. You told me then that the job you would prefer above all others was teaching defense against the dark arts. Of course at the time neither one of us had much hope of that being an attainable goal... And honestly I did not want one of my favorite students to take a seemingly cursed position. Things have changed now, Remus. The world still is not free of prejudice, but I can happily report that the school board of governors is. You are a respected and admired veteran-no, war hero is more apt-the children who idolized you as a professor are now parents themselves. If you are worried about being chased from your position again, I must reassure you that you have friends that will not allow that to happen. I do not understand your persistent refusal of the job we could only dream of you getting when you were young." Remus could barely look at her, the woman he had known from childhood, who had always known his secret and never allowed it to alter her opinion of him, and refuse her logic and ignore her concern. He also needed to tell someone his new secret. Immediately. Someone who was not an emotionally involved ten year old

"It is not that-at least, not entirely. You see, Dora has asked me for a divorce. I signed, and the papers are in processing now."

"I fail to see the problem. You need not be married to teach at Hogwarts. Have you forgotten that the majority of us, in fact, are unattached?"

"I know that. We told Teddy last night, and he did not react well. He locked himself in his room, and he would not even talk to us! I continually disappoint him. If he doesn't want to see me for awhile, I should not push in."

"You do realize that the new term does not start for six months and the average childhood sulk lasts about six hours? It sounds as though Teddy has had a normal reaction to upsetting news. He is probably only afraid of losing you. I am sure if you talk to him, he will be delighted to spend more time with you." She paused here, studying Remus over her glasses in a way that made him feel like a student again," If you are concerned about Miss Tonks' reaction, I am sure she will be happy. She has always wanted the best for you, and as I have mentioned before, was quite indignant when I hired someone else for the position after your first refusal."

"I cannot say 'yes' right now," Remus said tiredly, "but I will think about it. Will you give me a week?"

"Certainly. I have been waiting for you to accept this job for ten years, I can wait a week more," she paused to sip from her teacup and smile a bit smugly, "Though I daresay you will accept in less than a week. I know you intend to talk to Teddy and Tonks about it, and I am sure they will be extremely supportive of my proposition."

Remus returned her smile. "You really will not take 'no' for an answer this time."

"My defense teacher is a bit useless," she said defensively, "I said the one who would take the job and see if the curse was broken would either be brave or an idiot. We found an idiot. The curse is indeed broken, but I am now cursed with an incompetent professor."

"I suppose I cannot leave the students to suffer. If Dora and Teddy agree, I will be strongly tempted by your offer."

Her persuasion complete, McGonagall rose to her feet with the help of her cane and smiled knowingly at Remus. "I will leave you to your conversations," she said as she made her way to the door. Remus rushed ahead and held the door open for her. She nodded her thanks, and paused on the threshold. "Please do take my offer, Remus. I have known you were the man for the job since you were fifteen." She patted his arm warmly, and was gone.

Remus returned to his armchair and drank his tea pensively, feeling true excitement for his work for the first time since he accepted Dumbledore's offer almost fifteen years ago.

So... I still haven't decided if they will get back together. Tell me what you would like to happen and/or what you think is realistic.

Please review! It keeps my short attention span on board with this writing thing! Constructive criticism is always welcomed and encouraged!
