Under the cover of night, the three humans and troll traveled south, following a map Jade had found in the glove compartment. Nearly five hours after starting the drive, dawn began to break. The clock on the dashboard read 5:00 AM. Around two hours into the trip, they had stopped for a break. At that point John had taken over driving and Karkat had moved to the passenger side seat. Jade and Dave took to the back.
Karkat gave a glance over his shoulder. Dave and Jade were still in the same position they had been in since the stop. Jade was leaning against Dave and he had his arm around her. Karkat smiled to himself.
They were kinda cute. He turned back around and faced the front.
"They are cute, aren't they." John said, noticing Karkat's smile. "You know, Dave, before the invasion, had asked to date her. I told him no. In retrospect, I don't think I should have stood in their way."
"Dave asked your permission and not hers?" Karkat asked, puzzled.
"No, he asked her as well. He just came to me first."
"Why?"
"Well, cause I'm her brother."
"Should I have asked her for permission to date you?" Karkat was suddenly concerned he'd screwed
up.
"No, of course not." John laughed. "It's just that... Well... I'm her brother, and he's my best friend, and well…"
"But I'm dating her brother. Shouldn't I still have to…?"
"It's different."
"If you say so."
"Look, it doesn't really matter. All that I meant to say was that they've sort of been an item since the invasion."
Karkat shrugged. He added the asking permission thing to his ever-growing list of weird human things. He stared out at the road ahead. Something had been bothering him for a long time, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. What was it...? Suddenly, it hit him.
"Why are the roads so empty?" he asked.
"What?"
"Well, there are no other cars or anything on the road. It's empty. There were cars and shit when we started, but here, there is nothing. And we haven't run across a single patrol car." Karkat started to look around more frantically. He didn't like this. It was getting too easy to make this trip. He had expected to run across some form of resistance.
"I hadn't really noticed all that much," John said, "but now that you mention it..."
"They put up too much of a fight," Dave spoke up from the back, having apparently woken up. "Texas was being its traditional stubborn, asshole self and fought too hard. The trolls decided they couldn't be enslaved easily and just started destroying everything. The remaining people barely escaped total annihilation. That's what this resistance group is supposed to be. The last of Texas."
"But how come there's nothing left on the road and no patrols?" Karakt turned to face him.
"The resistance kept fighting the trolls using guerilla tactics. The hit and runs were so effective that the trolls would have 20-to-30 casualties for every one the resistance suffered. It got to the point where the trolls were losing entire squadrons and only getting about 10 of the resistance fighters. Eventually, the trolls gave up and left the whole area, clearing the streets as they went."
"How do you know all this?" John asked, confused and a bit surprised.
"That's what I did for that period of time right after the start of the invasion John. That time where I was gone? I was with my cousin in Texas. I helped the resistance secure their foothold. Then I went looking for you guys again while simultaneously spreading the word about the resistance."
"But I thought you guys heard that rumor in the camp," Karkat blurted.
"And who do you think started that rumor?" Dave pointed to himself with his free hand.
"But... if you knew about this resistance then why didn't you take us there?" John asked, a bit hurt.
"I was, dumbass." Dave smirked. "How else did you think we ended up as far south as Arkansas? I was slowly leading you down to the base."
"But why didn't you tell us about the base?! We could have gone straight there!" John gripped the wheel more tightly.
"Because I needed to recruit, John. The resistance doesn't have enough people John. If I had taken you straight there, then we wouldn't have met enough people or spread the word at all."
"But... but..." John's grip loosened slightly. "I guess you're right... I just... If we had gone sooner..."
"If we had gone sooner, things would all be different," Dave said curtly. "Maybe Rose would still be with us, but we wouldn't have met Karkat. It all would have been different. But that difference doesn't make it better." Dave frowned. "Look, man, I just... it happened this way, and we have to do what we can with things the way they are."
John frowned but said nothing. Karkat just turned and stared out the window of the car. He watched the sun creep slowly over the horizon. The drive continued on in silence for close to another twenty minutes before Dave spoke up again.
"There should be a bridge coming up soon. After the bridge, we should make a change onto route 63. There's a small stint on there before you turn off onto Boulware Road." He instructed. John nodded.
"From Boulware, you need to turn onto James King Road. And then from there onto John Kelly Road."
"I hope you don't mind going over that again cause I don't know that I'll remember that far ahead of time."
They followed the signs, and soon John had them on Boulware Road.
"What was the other road?" John asked.
"James King Road."
Soon, they were on said road, and John found the final street all on his own. He pulled up to the end of the road and saw a house just ahead of them. He drove up to the house and pulled to a stop just in front of a garage. He turned the car off and turned to face Dave.
"This is the resistance's stronghold?" he said incredulously.
"No. It's quite a few miles away in the woods. We just have to ditch the car here. We might want to stay in the house if you two need to sleep."
Karkat tried to protest but was interrupted by his own yawn.
"Maybe staying for a few hours wouldn't be a bad thing..." he muttered.
Dave chuckled and lightly shook Jade awake.
"We're here," he whispered, smiling at her.
Jade looked around sleepily. "This is the resistance?" she asked.
"No, but we're staying here for a while before moving on to the base."
Jade merely nodded and got out of the car. Dave followed her.
Karkat turned to John and motioned to the house. "You wanna go in?" he asked.
"In a sec. I wanna put this thing in the garage first. Mind opening the door for me?"
Karkat nodded and slid out of the car. He opened the door, and John drove the car inside. He turned it
off again and got out. Once John had exited the garage, Karkat shut the door, took his hand, and headed inside.
"Let's get some sleep," he said, giving John's hand a squeeze. John smiled and squeezed Karkat's hand back. He let Karkat pull him along, inside, up the stairs, into a bedroom, and onto the bed. Karkat threw John down first and then quickly followed him, curling around him and closing his eyes. Within seconds, he was fast asleep. John chuckled before letting himself slowly drift off to sleep.
…...
Dave walked out of the kitchen and plopped on the couch. Shortly after, he'd sat down, Jade came out in a new set of clothes she'd found in the bedroom before Karkat and John had claimed it for sleeping purposes. She was now in jeans and a non-descript white t-shirt. She sat down next to Dave.
"You okay?" she asked.
"As much as I can be," he said, trying to hide the sadness in his voice. It only marginally worked.
"I guess." Jade sighed. "Anything I can do?"
"Just... stay here?" Dave's voice came out pleading, but he didn't care. He really wanted Jade to stay
with him.
"Of course," Jade said with a smile. Dave's body visibly relaxed. Jade smiled as she suddenly moved, straddling his waist. She grabbed his glasses and pulled them off. She looked into his red eyes and smiled wide at him. Dave gave a quick smile before leaning forward and kissing her. Jade's eyes widened at first in surprise, then she slowly closed them and leaned into the kiss.
Dave slowly reached up and removed her glasses, setting them to the side carefully, safe and out of the way. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, pressing his tongue to her lips, asking permission to enter. Jade granted him permission, parting her lips.
Dave slid his tongue inside of her and explored her mouth, searching it, memorizing it like his life depended on it. Jade ran her hands through his hair and gripped it. She let out a low, soft moan and pressed closer to Dave as his hands ran up and down her back. He finally rested them, one on the small of her back the other on the opposite shoulder. Jade pressed into his hands and pushed her hips down.
Dave let his hand on her shoulder travel down to her bra strap. He deftly unclasped it and let it fall loose. Jade pulled back with a gasp, breaking the kiss. She moved her arms in small circles before reaching down her shirt and pulling out the bra.
"You sly devil," she mock glared down at Dave who merely grinned back.
"You like it."
"Maybe I do. Maybe I don't," she replied. "Maybe you should convince me." Her eyes glinted with
mischief.
"I've waited so long for this Jade." He breathed, staring up at her. Three long years of running and
hiding. Three long years of living in close quarters. Three long years of secret make out sessions. Three long years of desire and want, but denial.
"Then come and get it." She teased.
Dave needed no further urging, leaning up and reconnecting their lips momentarily as he grabbed the hem of her shirt. He started to pull her shirt up, but Jade pulled it down again.
"No. You have to earn that." She teased as she grabbed his shirt and slowly slid it and off of him, leaning him back against the sofa. She leaned forward and lightly kissed him, rolling her hips against his. Dave let out a moan and grabbed her hips, pulling her hips down and his up.
Jade gasped and leaned back. She pulled her shirt up and off, revealing her bare chest. Dave leaned forward and took one of her breasts into his mouth, sucking lightly. Jade gasped and pushed his head into her chest. Dave reached up with his free hand and cupped her other breast. Jade groaned happily and pressed into the hand. Dave used his other hand to undo his pants.
Feeling the motion down there, Jade shot her hands down and undid her jeans. She moved her hips up so she could remove her pants. Dave broke away from her breast and moved his hips up, removing his pants quickly. As soon as he sat back down, Jade was on top of him again, her hips already rolling.
Dave switched breasts, sucking on the other while cupping the open one with his hand. He massaged her breast with one hand as he ran his tongue around her nipple. Jade gasped and bucked her hips. She reached down and, with one hand, cupped his shaft and slowly stroked it through the fabric of his boxers. Dave let her breast out of his mouth and gasped. He leaned back and pulled his boxers down enough to get his shaft out. He pulled her panties to the side and pressed his tip to her entrance.
As he paused to look up to Jade for permission, Jade pushed down on him without warning. Dave gasped and pulled her flush against him. He pushed up and pulled her down harder. Jade groaned and pulled up. She started to ride him at a steady pace, moaning out.
Dave groaned and kissed her hard, moving his hips to match her speed, pulling out when she pulled away, pushing in when she pushed in. The friction drove them both crazy, Dave panting and growing warm. Jade's mind went blank as she felt the pleasure burst into her head and take over. Dave began thrusting up erratically as he neared his climax. Jade gasped and moaned out louder.
Dave thrust up deep into Jade, holding her down on him. His hips stopped, and his body shook as he came, filling Jade. Jade gasped and moaned happily, her climax reached. She leaned against Dave, panting, exhausted.
"I love you," he whispered in her ear. She merely kissed him in response, her pleasure addled mind struggling to find adequate words to describe how she felt. As they pulled away from the kiss, they locked eyes, Dave's red irises staring deep into her.
"I mean it, Jade," he said, "I can't lose you at all. I need you." Dave's eyes started to water up. He was losing his cool, his emotions starting to show but he wanted her to see this. He wanted this to be special for just her.
Jade cupped his cheeks in her hands and stared him in the eyes. "I know," she said before kissing him deeply.
They stayed there all night, only stopping the kisses to get dressed again. They ended up curling up together on the sofa and falling asleep.
