Chapter Two
Nomads
We returned back to the Volturi castle with one less family destroyed. Though they all scowled at me the whole trip home, I couldn't help but feel I had finally done something right. Like my life wasn't a complete waste of time, if only for a day. I only hoped Jane's threat was just that, a threat. Of course, I would never want to be the cause of any harm brought to my friends. They were all I had after all.
As soon as we walked through the doors I escaped to my room like a teenager in trouble. Whatever punishment they had for me could be doled out later. Though I couldn't sleep, my body felt exhausted. The closest thing I could get to rest was laying down with a worn out copy of Wuthering Heights. I had read this book a million and one times, but that never made it any less of an escape from the bullshit.
A few hours passed by, feeling like only minutes when there was a knock at my door. I made no move to get up, but Josh cautiously came in anyway.
"Um, Bella? I don't mean to intrude but-." He stuttered. He was adorably nervous when it came to me. Of course I was a pain in the ass, but never with Josh.
"It's not a problem Josh. What did they send you for now?" I set down my book and gave him a slight smile, to let him know I wouldn't bite. He visibly relaxed.
"Marcus said to inform you some guests will be staying with us for a while. He sent a note as well. I believe it has all the information you'll need for their time here."
I took the old school piece of parchment from Josh's finger tips and read out loud in a Marcus imitation.
"Isabella,
The Cullen family will be staying in our home for a few weeks and we expect you to be on more than your best behavior. I know that will be a struggle for you, but it is a demand we will not take lightly. Only speak when spoken to, stick to your normal feeding hours, and stay out of the way when possible. We will not tell you again. Should you step out of line even once, consequences shall be dire.
The Volturi"
I threw the piece of paper in the corner of my room. Josh was still in the doorway appearing comically pale.
"Relax Josh. They haven't killed me yet, they won't kill me now." I rolled onto my back with a laugh and picked my book back up. Josh simply nodded and backed out of the doorway. He was a sweet kid but frightfully nervous when he knew I had pissed someone off… which was most of the time.
Aro didn't need to worry about me intruding on his guests though. The Volturi had very few acquaintances, so anyone they considered close enough to stay at the castle had to be just as regal and annoying as them. I had no intentions on making new friends.
When night fall came I followed by usual routine and went hunting. Tonight I decided wild boar in the Berignone-Tatti Forest would be a nice treat. People didn't usually visit during the cover of night, which made it perfect for me. Any few late stragglers could easily be avoided.
I took to the wind and ran through the trees and shrubs, following my nose for guidance. The scent of a boar struck me quickly and I turned into predator immediately. Lurking in the bushes so I didn't scare it away. Some people enjoy the chase. I simply enjoy the meal.
Just as I was ready to pounce, a different scent caught my attention. Another vampire. Normally I'd assume Aro sent someone to spy on me, make sure I wasn't running away. As if I'd be stupid enough to try again.
This scent was one I hadn't smelled before though. I wasn't aware of the Volturi changing anyone recently or inviting a new vampire to join their cult. No, this was a stranger.
I spun on my heels expecting someone to be standing behind me, but no one was there. I searched the immediate area with my eyes, but surprisingly couldn't place anyone. I looked back to find the boar I had my eye on, but it was gone. A few drops of fresh blood took its place of the forest floor. I became livid.
"This shit isn't funny," I said in a low tone. Low enough no nearby human would hear, but loud enough any vampire would. "I'm thirsty as hell, and I'd like to hunt in peace. If Aro sent you-."
All of a sudden a burly, over six foot tall man was standing over me. His body was that of weight trainer but his smile was child-like and clearly full of mischief. His short, dark brown hair was unbothered but his clothes were covered in dirt and grass stains.
"Can I help you?" I refused to back down at his size, even though his smile wasn't intimidating in the least.
"You need to hunt faster," he mocked. "That way no one can steal your meal."
Great, the moron spoke in rhymes.
"That's usually not a problem considering I'm the only one that comes out here."
Then I noticed his eyes were liquid gold, like mine.
"You don't feed on humans," I deduced.
"You're smarter than you seem."
"You're an ass." I turned to leave, but he blocked me off.
"You wouldn't be the first to think so," he laughed. "My name is Emmett."
He stuck his hand out for me to shake but I made no move to do so.
"And this concerns me how?" I asked, trying to leave once again. He was too large and fast to get by though. No one this large should exist.
Just then two more yellow-eyed strangers appeared behind him. One was a blonde woman, tall and gorgeously model-like. Everything about her was long and statuesque. Her hair was straight to the middle of her back. Her legs went for days in a plain pair of denim shorts. If I wasn't insecure before, consider me ruined now.
Her eyes were focused on Emmett and seething. He didn't seem to notice as his grin grew wider at her presence.
"Rosie!" Emmett made a move to hug her but she quickly darted out of the way.
"Emmett you idiot," she scolded. "Have you forgotten where we are? Aro will have your ass if you bring attention-."
I stopped listening to her rant when I noticed the man she'd shown up with. He was a bit shorter than Emmett, but still pretty up there. His bronze hair was messy but somehow perfectly styled. As if he'd spent hours swooping the strands just right.
I hadn't realized he'd been staring at me the entire time. His face was scrunched up as if I was some increasingly difficult puzzle he just couldn't put together. I stared back, willing him to say something but the staring continued. I took this as my opportunity to leave.
Emmett and, I guess Rosie, continued arguing in the background like an old married couple. Their friend here seemed too dense to do more than pin me with a glare so I ran.
When I finally made it back to the castle, I had accepted I wouldn't be feeding tonight. Who knew how many of them were actually out there. Like I said before, I had no interest in making new friends.
Instead I visited one of my only friends, Angela. As always she was in her room surrounded by books and a laptop on her bed. She was an online lit student. I never understood her fascination with getting a college degree. It's not like Aro would ever let her go out and use it.
As usual I just stayed silent about the topic. I sat on the floor next to her bed and laid back. She instantly noticed my glum expression and closed her laptop. This is why I loved her.
"Alright, what happened now?" She asked, getting down on the floor with me.
"I'm thirsty and unable to hunt," I complained. "The perks of being one of the only vampires that drinks from animals, is that the forest is supposed to be my own. I should have my pick of the feast. Tonight I go out to hunt and run into three other yellow-eyed freaks. I'm supposed to be the only freak around here."
"If it makes you feel any better, you're still the only freak I know," she laughed. "Should I call Mike in here? Then you can tell us everything that happened."
"Sure, that works." I covered my face with my hair and closed my eyes trying not to focus on the thirst.
Angela texted Mike and thirty seconds later blonde hair was bouncing through the door, baby face in full grin.
"Bella! Angela says you're freaking out," he announced.
I sat up and turned to Angela.
"I am not freaking out!"
"Sounds like freaking out," Mike concluded.
I threw myself back down and began explaining everything that took place in the forest. Angela agreed that Emmett was indeed an ass, but Mike was more interested in the staring stranger.
"So he just… stared at you?" Mike asked for the third time.
"Yes Mike," Angela answered. "He just stared at her. His eyes were on her for a long time. He did not take his eyes off of her. Hence the word staring."
"Ok I get it!" he put his hands up in surrender. "I just think it's weird. Bella, did you… um, think he liked you or something?"
"Oh God Mike!" Angela complained.
"What?! I'm just curious!"
"Mike," I sighed. "I didn't even talk to him, so no he does not like me. He was just weird and I will probably never see him again."
Mike had had a crush on me since we met. He was sweet about it, which is why we were able to stay friends, but sometimes he became possessive if he thought there was a threat on the horizon. He liked to pretend his feelings were a big secret, even though Angela teased him mercilessly.
"He might have thought you were cute though," Angela grinned mischievously. "I mean you never know. He may come looking for you or something."
Mike's eyes went wide.
"You don't think… I mean… Bella did he seem-." Mike stuttered on while Angela did everything she could to contain her laughter.
"Mike relax," I assured him. "I'm sure they were just some odd nomadic clan passing through. Aro barely accepts me hunting animals. There's no way the Volturi would let a whole clan of people like me in here."
I laughed at the thought of the Volturi opening their doors and finding a large group of me waiting for them. Attitude and all.
Mike relaxed and sat back against Angela's bed.
"What are you going to do about hunting though?" he asked.
"If I'm lucky, they've already moved on. I should be able to be hunt in peace tomorrow."
I was never lucky though.
So what do you think? Will Bella run into her mysterious nomads again? Will Mike's crush survive the possibility? Find out in the next chapter coming soon.
Thank you so much for reading! Please review below and let me know what you think. All criticism is good criticism, but please remember this is my first chapter after some time.
