The four Judoon had them trapped. One of them put his rifle away, grabbed what looked like a flashlight, and aimed it at Wally. The device flashed a blue color of light, and made a beeping noise.
"Category: Human." Said the creature, before marking Wally with a black "X" on his hand.
Martha was next. As the Judoon approached her, Wally was getting nervous. After Martha would be The Doctor, and he would be nonhuman. He had to think fast, something that should not have been too difficult for him to do. Eva stared into the eyes of the four creatures. They had deep, rough voices, and they were giants compared to her. Their very presence was instilling a sense of fear as they towered over her. Her breathing started to accelerate.
"Eva?" said the Doctor.
She didn't answer.
She was lost in her own little world. Her gaze stayed focused on the four monsters in front of her. Wally noticed Eva's increased breathing, and took it as a sign that she was about to snap.
"Eva?" The Doctor said again, a hint of worry in his voice. "Snap out of it, come on. This is no time to panic."
"Hey." Said Wally. "Just take it easy okay?"
He reached out to place his hand on Eva's shoulder in an attempt to calm her down.
Wally wasn't the only one concerned with her. The Doctor had by no means forgotten his new companion's emotional instability, or her ridiculous strength. If she were to lose herself to her emotions, he feared the results would be potentially catastrophic.
The Judoon made their way to Martha and scanned her. One of them was unfortunate enough to point his device in Eva's direction. She gasped and scooted herself closer to the Doctor, who kept a careful eye on her.
"Stay still." The Judoon ordered her.
He aimed his device at her a second time. It let out a whirling sound, which made the Doctor quite nervous. He quickly placed his hands around her shoulders and spoke with a smoother tone, hoping that doing so would help her relax before it was too late.
"Just stay calm." he said to her.
"Nonhuman detected!" The creature spoke with a booming voice.
"Aw crap." Thought Wally.
Almost instantly after the words left the creature's mouth, an ear-piercing, thundering scream shook the entire building. Everybody in the hospital covered their ears to shield themselves. Suddenly, the same unfortunate Judoon that attempted to scan Eva was now being sent flying into the walls and crashing to the floor.
"Eva, no!" yelled the Doctor, furious.
It was no use. She had already grabbed a second Judoon and sent him flying through a window, barely missing a group of patients who were taking cover nearby.
"Stop it!" he yelled again. "What are you doing?!"
The Doctor could hardly believe what he was seeing. It was simply pure chaos. While Eva was thrashing about, she swung her arms at the remaining two Judoon, knocking them unconscious before they could draw their weapons. It wasn't long afterwards that more of them appeared and began to open fire.
The patients screamed and ducked for cover. Eva managed to dodge their blasts as she charged towards them and smashed them with her fists. Their bodies flew left and right, slamming through the structure of the entire building. They crashed through walls, doors and ceilings. Some even came close to landing on innocent patients and nurses. With each Judoon she took down, however, more seemed to arrive as reinforcements.
A swirling torrent of panic, rage and shock flooded Eva's thoughts.
"I'm not a human!" She thought. "Impossible! I won't accept it!"
Her mind was overwhelmed by the thought. She knew that she was different, but to not even be a human being? That opened up an entirely new wave of questions for her to answer. Her memory flashed to the day before, when all of this started.
"So what are you?" the Doctor asked her on that day.
Eva leaped through the window she had broken earlier, and ran away from the hospital.
"I don't know." She answered him. "I don't know what I am."
Without hesitation, the Doctor chased after her. Wally stayed behind, contemplating what to do at this point. He grabbed his head in frustration. This wasn't supposed to happen! Her past wasn't supposed to be like this. Eva was supposed to be a hero, not some short tempered psychopath. He had screwed it up, he thought, and he screwed it up badly.
Eva kept running, fueled by a dangerous blend of panic and rage. The Doctor was close behind, calling for her to stop and stretching out his hand in an attempt to grab her.
"Stop!" he yelled. "You're going to hit the force field!"
SLAM!
Eva bounced off of the invisible walls and landed on her back. Without a moment's hesitation she sprung back to her feet and began pounding on the force field with her bare hands. The field made a loud crackling sound with each blow it endured. Furious, the Doctor grabbed his frenzied companion by the hand as she raised it for another strike.
"Eva." He said in a cold, chilling tone.
She stared at him and kept still.
"Listen to me."
He knew quite well that this woman could tear him apart at any moment, but he had to stop her now. She had already put herself, him and the rest of the hospital at risk. If she were to actually break the force field, they would all be dead.
"Listen to me." He repeated, gritting his teeth and keeping his grip.
Eva felt her panic begin to fade.
"Doctor?" she whispered, her voice sounding faint and tired.
This was a good sign. She was beginning to pay attention to him. Now all he needed to do was to calm her down completely, and find a way out of this mess she had created. Her breathing slowly returned to normal, and she relaxed her hands. The Doctor released his grip, but still watched her every movement. An expression of shame and sorrow covered her face. She knew what she had done, and lowered her head in embarrassment.
Two more Judoon approached them from behind.
"Nonhuman. Analysis confirmed." One of them spoke. "You have been charged with physical assault, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, and the murder of the Child Princess of Padrivole Regency Nine."
"What?!" exclaimed Eva.
"You fit the description of the transgressor. We have witnessed your crimes. Plea: Guilty. Sentence: Execution."
Within an instant, the two creatures fired at her. Eva let out a scream as her body vanished in less than a second. The Judoon looked at each other, confused. She had just been enveloped in red, then turned to ash. One of them reasoned that it was probably because they had both fired at her at the same time. The Doctor saw large flaws in such an explanation, but said nothing. Their job fulfilled, the Judoon put away their weapons and began to march back toward their ships. The Doctor fell to his knees, holding the pile of ash that was once his new companion.
A red blur then surrounded him, and he felt himself suddenly being lifted from the ground and carried away with blinding speed. His entire field of vision became nothing more than a strong windstorm of colors blowing against his face. It was only three seconds before he found himself being gently dropped in front of the janitor's closet. Martha had been sitting against the wall, right next to the door. The Doctor fell backward, weak and exhausted. Martha held out her arms and caught him.
Confused, the Doctor looked up to see who or what had snatched him. Next to Martha stood a young man clad in dark red tights from head to toe. His forearms had yellow bands sparking with electricity, and he wore a cowl that had golden metallic wings on each side. Furthermore, his eyes were white, he wore bright yellow boots, and a V-shaped belt styled to look like lightning bolts. In the middle of his chest was a white circle, with a gold-colored lightning bolt in the middle. In spite of the major wardrobe change, The Doctor still knew who he was.
"Wally?" he whispered as he began to gasp for air.
He felt the air grow thinner with each breath he took. Everyone did. The mayhem for earlier had caused everyone to consume more oxygen, which had been in limited supply ever since they appeared on the moon. Now that there was so little left, the patients and staff began to faint. The Doctor felt his own vision start fading to black as Wally knelt by him.
"Doctor?" said Wally.
The Doctor heard him, but was too weak to respond. His body was too focused on obtaining what precious little amounts of air that it could inhale.
Wally was also in desperate need of oxygen, but held his breath as long as he could so that he would not consume as much as everyone else needed. His focus was getting the Doctor and Eva back to Earth alive. A sudden rumbling caused him to lose his balance, and he collapsed to the floor alongside the Doctor and Martha. A few seconds later, Wally took a large gasp of air and was both surprised and relieved to find that he was no longer struggling to breathe.
"Hey guys!" Wally exclaimed with excitement and relief. "Look!"
The Doctor also breathed in deeply. He noticed that air was now abundant, meaning that they were finally back on planet Earth.
"The Judoon." Martha said. "They must have teleported us back!"
For a moment a smile spread across the Doctor's face. The hospital had been saved, he was back in London, and could finally head back to the TARDIS for his next adventure, except-
"Eva." He said sorrowfully. "I couldn't save her."
Wally smiled at him and gave him a friendly pat on the back.
"Hey don't be so down!"
"What?"
"Eva! You can come out now!"
The door to the janitor's closet flung open, and out of the closet emerged Eva, perfectly unharmed save for a few bruises from the earlier fighting. She smiled at the Doctor and swung her arms around him for a hug. The Doctor embraced her, overjoyed that she was still alive.
"But how?" he asked, his smile still not fading.
"Simple!" Wally said with a smirk. "I swapped her out with my jacket at the last second!"
"But-"
"And believe me, one second was more than enough time."
The Doctor's face faded from happiness to complete bewilderment.
"Okay, hold on." He said as he let go of Eva and turned to face Wally. "I have a set of questions for the both of you-"
Wally gulped. He had a pretty good idea of what kind of questions the Doctor had in store for him. The problem was that he wasn't sure how much or how little he could reveal without ruining even more of Eva's history.
"-But first," The Doctor continued. "Let's just get back to the TARDIS."
A/N: Apologies for the lack of updates. Real life hit pretty hard, to make a long story short, but I find writing fanfics to be a sort of comfort hobby. Thanks for reading, and any feedback would be helpful so that I can see my flaws and know what to improve. =)
