The Doctor was busy setting the course for their next adventure. It would be somewhere in the far future though he was still a little unsure as to where. His mind wandered again toward Rose and all the wonderful times he had with her. Then it hit him.
"I got it!" he exclaimed with his finger in the air.
"Got what?" asked Wally, who zoomed in from behind.
"Our next destination, Wally! The far future!"
Eva overheard the Doctor's excitement and ran toward the console to meet them.
"How far?" she asked with a smile on her face.
The Doctor flipped some switches on the console, grabbed a lever and pulled it using his whole body. "The year five billion and fifty three!" he answered.
"Earth lasts that long?" Eva asked, amazed.
The Doctor laughed cheerfully. "No, this is New Earth! Not only that-"
He grabbed his jacket and darted toward the door, still going on about their new location. "- but we're slap bang in the middle of New New York! Well, it's technically the fifteenth New York -"
The Doctor cut his explanation short just as he was about to open the door. He quickly turned to Wally, who was still wearing his red costume. That crimson red shining suit, those golden wings, that thunderbolt on his chest…
"He can't be." The Doctor thought to himself.
"Oh, and Wally." Said the Doctor in a cold manner, pointing his finger at him. "Change your clothes. You look ridiculous in that outfit."
As soon as he finished his sentence, Wally sped toward his room and returned in a red T-shirt, brown jacket, jeans and tennis shoes. He also wore a ring on his finger, and had managed to do it all within one second.
The Doctor still was unsure what to think of Wally. No human could ever be that fast, yet he was certainly no Time Lord. Both Eva and Wally possessed abilities beyond that of the average humans that they appeared to be. That made two mysteries that resided with him. He would never admit it, but he was starting to become frustrated with not being able to find answers about either of them. He did, however, begin to have a pretty good idea about Wally.
The Doctor was not one to read comic books in his spare time, but even so he knew that costume as soon as he saw it back at Royal Hope. He decided that now was the time of adventure, however, and that he would confront Wally about telling the whole truth later.
"Right then!"
The Doctor flung the door open and ran into the dark alleyway that they had landed in. The streets were still wet, as if a heavy rain had occurred not too long ago. Eva was not too impressed with this supposedly awesome city. There was nothing in their direction but dumpsters, rats and graffiti. If anything, it looked like they had landed in a future ghetto.
"Wow." Said Eva, in a sarcastic tone. "Lovely isn't it?"
The Doctor grinned as he continued walking further into the alleyway. "Yep. This is it right here, you two. The real city!"
Wally scoffed. "As opposed to what, the fake city?"
The Doctor ignored Wally's comment and motioned for them to keep walking.
Wally followed, while Eva ran ahead and found herself surrounded by market stands, all closed. When the Doctor and Wally caught up with her, the stands suddenly sprang open, and each pharmacist was shouting at her.
"So, what'll it be today, sweetheart? You want some Happy?" shouted one.
"No! Don't buy from him! I have Happy!" exclaimed another.
Yet another shouted at her.
"How about some Love? Or some Forget?"
Curious, Eva took a step toward one of the stands, as the pharmacist urged her to come closer in hopes of making a sale. Furious, the Doctor grabbed her arm.
"No!" he said, raising his voice. "Stop it! Now!"
Wally scratched his head. "Are… are they selling drugs?"
The Doctor eyed the vendors, with a look of disdain on his face.
"They're emotions." He said, disgusted with these dealers. "They're selling emotions."
Eva turned toward him, embarrassed that she did not catch on sooner that they were trying to sell futuristic drugs to her.
"Sorry." She said.
The Doctor pulled her slowly toward himself, never taking his eyes off of the pharmacists in front of her.
"You didn't know." He said, in a cold manner. "Just keep walking.
One pharmacist, an athletic looking man with slick black hair, stepped away from his shop and approached the two.
"Here." He said with a wolfish grin. "Try a sample."
The Doctor quickly swung Eva behind him and whipped out his sonic screwdriver, pointing it at the man.
"Don't even think about it." He growled.
The man displayed a look of fright and slowly backed away, but kept his sights fixated on Eva.
Further ahead, in the darkness of the streets ahead, there shone two glowing sparkles of red light. The Doctor was mesmerized by it. It was piercing, as if they were staring daggers at him. Wally noticed it too. The light disappeared for a second, then reappeared again. They looked like eyes of some sort. Yes, they were definitely the eyes of something, or someone.
While the Doctor and Wally were fixated on the mysterious red lights that broke the dark and damp environment, the young pharmacist from earlier whispered Eva's name. The man slowly approached her, holding a satchel in his hand. Eva kept his eyes on him, just in case he was going to try something shady.
The man motioned her to come toward him, reassuring her that he meant no harm. Eva watched his left hand carefully as he slowly reached into his satchel, and pulled out at least dozens of transparent patches. Eva eyed them all curiously. They had strange symbols on them, with words like "Forget", "Rage", "Happy", and so on. These were the emotions that the Doctor had told her not to touch. He gently placed nearly all of them onto the palms of her hands.
"Take these," said the pharmacist. "-and hide them from the Doctor."
Eva was taken aback, disgusted that this man would try to throw his "moods" onto her, and confused as to how this stranger knew the Doctor.
"Wha-?!"
"Trust me." He said in a calm manner. "And tell Wally I said to hurry back."
That voice. Eva could swear that she heard that voice before. It seemed calm and collected, but she could feel that there was a connection between this man's voice, and the deep, almost growling voice she heard in the transmission from earlier. Her hearing was more than capable of recognizing things that the average person would be deaf to. Yes, there was no doubt in her mind.
"I know you." Eva said, her eyes widened from the realization that she recognized him.
The man smiled, and raised his right arm. There was a disc shaped object strapped to his forearm, with a yellow button in the middle. Before Eva could ask what that device was, he slapped the button with his left hand and vanished. His confident smile never faded.
"Eva!" Called the Doctor.
He had been too distracted with the red glowing light in the darkness to pay attention to either of his companions, at least until now. He turned around to see Eva standing alone with a look of bewilderment and a handful of drugs. If ever there was a moment that made the poor girl's hair stand on end, it was seeing the twisted look of anger that was forming on the Doctor's face.
The Doctor's eyes were almost completely round. His teeth were fully bared and clenched. Here was his companion who, according to Wally, he was supposed to practically raise for some great purpose. Here she stood right in front of him, with drugs in her hands! She was openly disobeying what he had just told her! What a great beginning this was going to be.
"Doctor, I-"
He angrily walked up to her and swatted the filthy objects from her hands.
"What are you doing?!" he snapped. "I said no!"
He paused to take a moment to breathe. Now was not to the time to go off on her. He would save that for when they got back to the TARDIS. Taking a deep breath, he continued heading toward the light he saw earlier. It was now gone.
"Let's just go." He said with a sigh.
"Wait a minute." Said Eva.
"What is it?"
"Do you hear that noise?"
The Doctor shook his head. "No. I don't hear anything."
Eva turned around and walked back toward the direction they came. The TARDIS had parked right next to a brick wall, where the sounds of honking and motors grew louder.
"There's something behind here." She said. "I want to find out what it is."
Eager to show off her strength, she punched through the solid wall as if it were cardboard. She then began pulling away chunks of brick, until she had made a ten by ten hole in the wall.
"You didn't have to do that, you know." Said the Doctor, sounding unimpressed by Eva's show of superior strength.
Eva scratched her head, embarrassed at failing to please the Doctor. The sight that lay before them, however, more than made up for it.
There had to have been at least thousands of cars floating in the air, all lined up as if in a massive traffic jam. Each car emitted toxic, green fumes that clouded the undercity. Sight was near impossible save for the lights coming from the cars. All three of them were coughing and gagging from the fumes that were leaking into the alleyway thanks to Eva tearing a gaping hole in the wall. The Doctor tried waving away the gas with his hands, but no use. This wasn't going to work. If they were going to explore and have their first adventure as a trio, they at least had to be able to breathe. To make matters worse, there was no direction they could go. As Eva had decided to simply break a solid wall rather than use a door, there was no walkway or anything of the sort for them to walk on. It was a dead end.
"I got an idea!" said Wally, stretching out his arms in front of his body. "Stand behind me."
They obeyed, and watched as a red costume sprang from Wally's ring, and he spun around like a tornado. There he was in that costume again, much to the Doctor's un-amazement. Wally then began to rotate his arms in a circular motion. He sped them up, faster and faster until one could only see a blur where his arms should be. The fumes were being blown away from them. They could breathe again, at least for as long as Wally's arms could hold out, however long that could have been.
From the depths of the undercity, the glowing red light appeared again.
"Look, down there!" exclaimed the Doctor.
He pointed toward the peering red light below. There was something unsettling about it this time. It was getting brighter. Eva squeezed beside the Doctor and grabbed hold of the wall with her left hand, leaning over in order to see everything she could.
Suddenly a burst of heat shot forth from the darkness below, and pierced through Eva's left shoulder. She screamed in pain as she lost her grip and began to fall into the dark smog below.
"I've got you, Eva!" screamed Wally as he immediately stopped spinning his arms and prepared to race after her.
He heard a loud thud and found her lying on top of one of the cars that was stuck in a lane below. Wally grabbed the Doctor and leapt into the motorway, landing on top of a Volkswagen styled car just above where Eva landed.
"These cars don't look like they'll move anytime soon, Doctor." Said Wally.
He set the Doctor back on his feet and prepared to jump one lane below.
"Stay here." He said.
"Not a chance." The Doctor replied.
Wally leapt again, and easily landed on Eva's car. The Doctor followed, though he had a rougher landing than his companion did.
A sudden blue blur violently tore through the lanes beside them and knocked both Wally and Eva into the depths below. The Doctor watched helplessly as they disappeared, not knowing where they could have landed, or if they would even be alright. Things only started to get worse from this point. The Doctor began to succumb to the fumes, and started coughing and hacking. He did not want to abandon either of them, but in this instance it would be better to be able to breathe so that he could be alive to help them. Luckily, he came up with a temporary, yet sure, solution to the immediate problem at hand. He hurriedly reached into his coat and pulled out his sonic screwdriver. It whirled loudly as he used it to unlock a hatch on the roof of the car he stood on. After pulling to hatch open, he jumped inside the car and resealed the hatch.
"What? Who are you?" asked the driver.
"Oh I'm just, you know, conducting a survey for the city." Replied the Doctor. "Look do you have any water?"
The driver nodded and showed him the water jug right next to the passenger seat. The Doctor wasted no time in grabbing a nearby paper cup and rehydrating himself. He could not stay long. He needed to find Wally and Eva, and fast.
A/N: I sincerely apologize for the lack of updates. I had not forgotten or abandoned the story. On the contrary I had been writing and rewriting this and future chapters and trying to keep everything in character and consistent. I will admit that I have mostly based Wally on the animated Justice League series but picked up some comics to get more of a feel of the character. Any reviews are welcome! Thanks for your patience!
