(p.s. Yes those are more Lorde lyrics..I'm pretty sure she's a genius.)

"All my life
I've been fighting a war
I can't talk to you or your friends
It's not only you
My heart jumps around when I'm alluded to
This will not do."

-Bravado.

-Lorde.

That night, I got into bed to go to sleep. I knew I had to tell her.

In a perfect world, none of this would've been happening. Maggie and I would be a few years into our marriages and have a big house in the suburbs or maybe on a farm, if that's what she wanted. We would've agreed on having kids and I'd be glad to hear her say she was pregnant. She would've been telling me, not vice versa.

But things weren't perfect and I had to figure this out.

I had a few different ways I could've gone about this. I could've told her all at once and blurted it out, like ripping off a band-aid. I could've tried to make it seem less awful than I know it is and made it seem like a celebration. But, after some internal debate, I'd decided what would be the easiest.

Maggie was rearranging the sheets on the bed and I was lingering by our stash of medication and drugs of different sorts which we kept on a small shelf in the corner. Maggie'd had some of the pills and serums since before we had to leave the farm. It was always the first thing we grabbed when we had to leave our place we were at so we kept a plastic bag right next to them.

Of course, there were a few things we always kept out, not that there were many but there were a few. For instance, Maggie always kept out her Midol so, when she had to, she could reach it in a hurry.

I decided that this would be my transition. I picked up the little white pills and held them in my hands before turning to Maggie.

"Hey, " I said, trying to be casual when I knew this was anything but. "I was thinking about trying to go on a run tomorrow."

"Another? Haven't we pretty much swept the entire county at this point?" she said.

"The stores yeah, but not the houses. There are a few that look pretty untouched that are a few miles out. I was thinking about going and looking around."

"I don't know Glenn. Is it really necessary? I don't want you away if you don't have to be."

"Rick thought it would be a good idea. He said it wouldn't be such a bad idea to find some more cans and maybe even things to burn" I lied.

The truth was that there were no houses. I just needed to get Maggie talking about the pills. No, though, I felt sort of guilty for leading her on, like there was something else we could do to make things better.

"Well, I guess it would be alright. And I guess if they have a lot then we have someplace we can get a few things from when we need them."

Her words made my stomach turn. "Anyways," I said. "I was really going to try to hit their medicine cabinets. Do you need anything in particular? If I can find it?"

"Um, no, I don't think so." she crawled into bed. "But, hey, while you're there, if it's not too much, I wouldn't mind some more bubble bath. You know, just so there's some variety if we want it." she winked.

"Maggie," I smiled but shook my head.

"You're right. I don't want you to be there any longer than you have to be anyways." she came over and wrapped her arms around me.

I place a hand on her back. "Me neither." I felt a lump in my throat and resisted the urge to cry. I couldn't help but imagine that, if my worst nightmares came true, these moments of just me and her alone in our bunk would soon be over.

"Anyways," I said. "I was looking through things we need but none of these are missing." I said showing her the pills.

She glanced at them and looked at me, confused. "Really?"

"It's been a couple months." I said.

"Has it?" I could tell she was thinking back in her mind. "I guess I must've skipped a couple months then."

"A couple months?" I asked, trying not to sound like I expected her to say that. At the same time, thinking about her saying it and actually seeing the words come out of her mouth are very different things.

"Yeah," she shrugged. "It happens sometimes when I get stressed. Besides, with summer coming and the season changing, bodies change too. I'm not worried about it."

"You're not?" I asked.

"No," she shook her head. "After everything that happened at the prison, my dad, and then after being away from you for so long, it makes sense that I've been stressed out more than usual." she said. Even though I know she didn't know the whole truth, her words still were comforting. "I mean, I could see being concerned if I thought I was pregnant but there's not way. We always use a condom and I've skipped around before so-" she shrugged. "I'm not worried about it. Skipping means that a period is just one less thing I have to worry about."

Her confidence mocked me. "Right."

"Come on, let's get to bed." she patted the spot beside her.

I walked over and was about to sit when she pulled her shirt over her head.

"Whoa, whoa," I said. "Mags, not tonight okay? You know I'd love to but-"

"Glenn," she said, tossing her shirt at me, leaving her just in a bra. "I'm not taking it off for you."

Even though I was far from being in he mood, I was still a little disappointed. "Oh?" I asked.

"Yeah, I've just been really hot lately. Summer's really coming fast this year." she fanned herself.

I knew it wasn't hot, but Maggie was sweating buckets. I wondered if this was a symptom.

"Oh," I said, getting in beside her.

I wrapped my arms around her and felt heat radiate from her skin. She was burning up.

I kissed her forehead and not before long, she was sleeping.

I had to remind myself that I wasn't even sure she was pregnant. Summer was coming and between the seasons changing and the stress she's been under, Maybe that was what was causing her to skip periods.

I couldn't be positive until she took a test, which I'd have to go get tomorrow. The longer we waited, the less chance we ad to do something about it.

I felt her breathing get heavier. I watched her rib cage, white bone pressing against her thing, skinny frame, rise and fall over and over again, like waves on a shoreline.

She couldn't be pregnant. Two months? Eight weeks? It was impossible. Her body was by no means frail, but she just wasn't healthy. None of us were. Her body couldn't handle carrying another person, certainly not for nine months.

I remembered the bad times in between places, when we were on the road.

I'd felt awful after the farm was gone. There was no food. We were starving.

What we did find was mostly spoiled and poisoned our bodies.

If I was a father, I couldn't let that happened again. I couldn't watch that happened again.

But that was impossible.

I would never be a dad and Maggie would never be a mom because we couldn't, it wasn't safe.

Besides there couldn't possibly be a person in there. Inside of her, just under her skin, under my hand.

If there was, wouldn't I be able to tell? As the father?

I reached my palm out and lightly grazed it over her stomach. I knew I wouldn't feel it kick or move or anything, even if there was a baby. But I should get some sort of feeling shouldn't? Something should be able to tell me that there was something alive in there.

I press my hand more firmly into her.

"Glenn," she asked, tired. "What're you doing?"

She'd woken up.

I awkwardly moved my palm from her stomach and around her body, pulling her closer. "Come here." I said.

The closer she was to me, the safer I felt she was. When she was away, I was always terrified, for me, for her, for our future. But with her here, everything was right, even when it was wrong.

"I just wanted you closer to me." I leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Go back to sleep."

The next morning I was woken up early to the sound of Maggie leaving bed.

"Maggie?" I asked, groggy. She pushed me aside and ran out of the bedroom.

I followed her and saw her running towards the trees. "Mags, wait up."

"Glenn, no, don't follow me." she called back.

I watched as she fell to her knees and I sped up to catch her.

"Maggie, I-" she crouched on the ground and clutched her stomach as she emptied it. The rancid smell filled the air and I heard the sound of her gagging a few feet away from me.

I ran up to her and knelt beside her body. After pulling the hair away from her face, I rubbed my hand across her back.

A moment later, more of the substance made it's way out of her. I wondered how she could've even had this much in her stomach but, by the looks of it, it was mostly clear and watery.

She looked up at me and I took her into my arms.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Yeah," she sighed, her voice rough. "I'm okay." she wiped her mouth. "That was just-" she paused. "Weird, I guess."

"Are you getting sick?" I asked.

"Maybe, but, I really don't think so. It must've been something I ate."

"Well, Maggie, it didn't look like you've eaten much." I said, nodding at the mess.

"There hasn't been much to eat." she shrugged. "I don't know. It couldn't have been anything else. It doesn't matter. I feel fine now."

I nodded. "Okay," I put her hand in mine. "I'll walk you back to bed."

"I've got it." she said, standing up.

Still, I insisted and I walked back to tuck her in. "I'll go get you some water."

"Glenn, it's a long walk to the kitchen. I'm okay."

"It's fine. I'll be back in a few minutes." I kissed her forehead and she thanked me before I left.

I only made it a few feet before I ran into someone.

Daryl stood in front of me with a stern look on his face.

"Are y'all okay?" he asked. "I heard something."

"Yeah, yeah, we're fine. I think, I-" I looked around. "What time would you say it is?"

He sighed and looked up at the sky. "I dunno. Four or five. Maybe six at the latest."

I sighed and rubbed my eyes. "I might as well stay up then." I said.

I didn't want Daryl to know I thought Maggie just had morning sickness.

"Glenn," he said. "Don't try to pretend this didn't just happen."

"I just have to get some water for Maggie." I moved around him and towards the kitchen.

He caught up with me.

I was pouring her water from a jug into a metal cup.

"Maggie's pregnant, Glenn." he said. "There ain't no gettin' around it now."

"I'm just trying to be positive Daryl." I said, watching as the cool liquid melted from the container.

"Well, somethin' a helluva lot different is going to be positive after Maggie takes that test." he walked over to me, pointing. "Have you even made the run for it yet?"

"I'm going today, alright? Just get off my back." The water began to overflow but I couldn't make my hands stop pouring.

"Off your back?" he pushed my shoulder back and I knocked the cup over and onto the floor. "Looks like that's exactly where I need to be seein' that you ain't done shit about this."

"Do you think this is easy?" I yelled at him.

"No, I don't think it is. But it's what you gotta do for Maggie." he spat at me.

"And I'm doing it!"

"No you're not!" He yelled. "You're in here cryin' and bitchin' about how you got Maggie knocked up an-"

I pushed him away from me. "She's not knocked up! It's not her fault!"

He stepped closer to me. "It's her fault she married a piece of shit like you who can't even look at a condom before slidin' it on his dick."

I screamed and pushed him back again. "I didn't mean to!"

He grabbed my shoulders and pinned me up against the wall. "Doesn't matter, Glenn. What's done is done!"

His spit hit my face as his arm pressed hard on my throat. "Why do you care, huh? This isn't your problem Daryl!" I pushed up but was slammed back.

My head hit the wall. "This is everyone's problem now!"

I tried to stand again but was slammed again. The back of my skull hit the bricks and I got dizzy. "Daryl, get away from me!

"What about when Maggie dies, huh? What about us then?"

"She's not going to die!" I screamed.

He pushed me back and my head hit the wall for a final time. "You don't know that." he said.

My vision was getting blurry from the lack of oxygen. "Neither do you!" I tried to yell but it came out like a growl. I put my hand on Daryl's arm, trying to pull him off.

"None of us knew that Lori was going to die either, but she did. Now we don't even have Hershel to help her out. Snowball's chance that Maggie'll make it out of this." he got closer to me and his voice became an angry whisper. "How many more people can we lose Glenn?" he yelled.

"We won't lose her." My voice was tired.

"I've been up with Beth all night. She's been cryin' and weepin' about how Maggie will but just like their dad in a few months. Gone! And who do we all have to blame for that! It's someone's fault, isn't it?"

The pressure tightened as he held me to the wall. I looked up at him, taking long blinks as the darkness crept in around me. "Daryl, please. I didn't mean to. Please," I pulled on his arm but he didn't budge.

Suddenly, from beside us there were gun shots.

Daryl's arm dropped as he drew his knife. I turned and grabbed a rolling pin that was beside me.

Rick had entered the kitchen and looked at both of us. Michonne followed close behind him.

"There's been a breach on the left side. Tyreese is on watch and just gave us the signal." he came up and handed Daryl his crossbow and me a gun. "I've already sent Sasha, Beth and Carol to make sure everyone stays in their bunks."

"Beth?" Daryl asked. I had to admit I was glad not to hear Maggie's name.

Rick nodded. "We gotta go."

He walked in the direction of the sounds and I watched as Michonne and Daryl followed in formation behind him, I brought up the end.

As I was walking past the entrance, Maggie appeared.

"Maggie?" I asked, alarmed. "What the hell are you doing?"

"I heard the gun shots come from near here and I knew you were in the kitchen. I had to come find you."

"Get back to bed. We've got it handled."

"No," she shook her head and pulled her knife. "I'm coming with you."

"Maggie, no." I tried to sound assertive. "Listen to me, go back to bed."

"Glenn, I-"

"Let her come, Glenn. If we stay here and argue we're gonna have bigger issues." Rick warned as he waited for us, agitated.

"Maggie, get to bed!" I raised my voice and grabbed her by the shoulders to turn her around.

"No, Glenn!" she faced me. "I'm following you, wherever you go." Her face was desperate.

"Listen to Glenn, Maggie!" Daryl yelled.

"Go to bed!" I screamed, pushing her towards the door.

"Glenn!" I heard Rick call.

"Go!" I yelled.

"Yeah," an unfamiliar voice said from behind me. I turned to see the face of a man I'd never seen before. Two others, a younger guy and a woman, flanked him. "Go."

The man raised his gun and aimed at Maggie.

"No!" I yelled.

All I knew next was pain.

Alright, so this was a long-ass chapter and hopefully it wasn't too painful (no pun intended). Like I said, from here on out things get pretty real.

Thanks for reading!
