The sun was shining in full force as Sigyn sat down to write her many letters. Despite the sunny clear sky, it was still a rather cool day, and the occasional breeze made Sigyn's task of writing difficult. Every so often the wind would tussle her parchment about, and as if that didn't make things difficult enough, her hair refused to stay out of her eyes. Sigyn was not about to let these little annoyances deter her from her task though. She had promised her family and Frigga letters, so she would get them written no matter what. She and Loki had only been at the first estate for two days now, so there was not much of interest to report, but she was certain that those she loved would be glad to know that they had reached the estate with no difficulty. The journey had actually been rather invigorating. She and Loki spent their day long ride looking at the beautiful countryside, talking, and even galloping freely across the plains at some points. Sigyn knew Roan had enjoyed the extended trip, and she couldn't deny how uplifted it left her feeling. Loki's concern that Livia wouldn't be able to have the living quarters of the estate ready in time for their arrival proved to be baseless. Though not perfect, the maid had done a good job of getting as much done as she could on her own. Loki had refrained from giving her a hard time about the tasks she hadn't been able to get to, and had instead seen to the unfinished details himself. Now that the estate was livable, it was time for them to begin coming up with the pros and cons of the residence. It was certainly beautiful, nestled in the hills of the Asgardian countryside, but it was rather far away from the palace. It was true that they wanted to leave the pressures of court behind, but this might be a little too far removed. It would be rather difficult for her family to travel this far, especially with Siggy being so young. Sigyn had yet to bring that point up with Loki since they had determined to keep their opinions to themselves till they rode to the next estate, at which point they would have plenty of time to discuss things.

Sigyn filled her letters with assurances of their safe arrival and details of the beautiful home and grounds. Only once she had finished every letter did she lean back and enjoy her current view. The small courtyard she was in contained a single tree and the small fountain area where she had been sitting to write. There were no flowers in this courtyard, but the second, and larger of the two, was brimming full of them. While the other courtyard was perhaps the more pleasing to the eye, this one was more soothing to Sigyn's soul, and at the moment she couldn't help but think that was what she needed. This courtyard would be a strong pro for this estate, but it was likely some of the other estates had courtyards just like it. Her silent musings were eventually interrupted by a beloved silken voice.

"I see you've been busy while I was away." Loki remarked as he came to sit down next to her in the grass.

"I have been. I knew you would forget to write your mother so I took the liberty of doing so for you. If you wish to add your own thoughts I am sure there will be room in the envelope to fit a second letter."

"I don't doubt that you have covered everything I could wish to say. A separate letter from me would merely repeat what you have said, but far less eloquently."

"Says the man known for his silver tongue." Sigyn noted.

"The written word and the spoken word are two very different things to master, My Dear. I may rule one, but you certainly rule the other."

"Then if you are not to write a full letter, perhaps you would like to add an addendum to mine? There is room enough for it."

Loki gave her a heartwarming smile and took the quill and parchment from Sigyn. She looked away so that he could write whatever it was he wished to write without disturbance. After a moment or so he handed her the folded parchment back and she slipped it into the envelope.

"So how are we to get these letters to our families? We promised to write, and you assured me there would be a means to deliver them."

"There is a garrison stationed in the town we will be visiting tonight. As a Prince I have the right to employ the soldiers there if I need to. We will send the letters with their messenger."

Sigyn gave a little "ah" of understanding, but the mention of soldiers brought up a question that she had been pondering.

"Loki… how were you able to convince the AllFather to allow us to travel so far from the palace unescorted? I would have thought that your father would have required us to bring at least a few palace guards along."

"He requested that we do so when I asked his permission to leave, but I made it clear that I wished to make the journey unescorted. He didn't argue with me on the matter."

"Do you think it is safe? You travelling so far away from the palace with no guard."

"I think we would be far less safe traveling with them."

Loki made his reply looking up to the sky, but Sigyn kept a trained eye on him. He was hiding something from her.

"You think travelling with a guard would have brought more attention to us?"

"Yes."

No, he was lying. That wasn't the reason he had wanted no protection from the palace guards.

"Loki, what are you hiding from me?"

Loki looked down at her with innocent eyes.

"Hiding?"

"Yes, hiding. There is a reason you requested permission for us to travel unguarded. Are you using this trip to lure out some of your old enemies perhaps? Provide them with an incentive to come after you so you can take them down."

"If I still worked for the War Council, perhaps, but those days are behind me now."

"Not that far behind you."

"I would never put you in that sort of danger, Sigyn."

"Then why? Why did you wish to leave us vulnerable to attack? That is what we are, you know, without any sort of guarded escort. It's not that I mind, I really don't. I am glad that the palace lifestyle isn't following us here, but I am curious. I know you have a reason for it, and I know you are hiding it."

"I wanted this trip to be as private as possible. An armed escort of any sort would have ruined the whole purpose of this trip."

"That may be true, but I know you Loki. That isn't your only reason."

"You know what I think?" He asked while leaning back on his hands and stretching his legs out. "I think you are secretly hoping I have some hidden agenda. Some deep dark reason that could foreshadow some great adventure to come."

"You know what I think?" She returned while scooting to sit across his lap. "I think you are trying to distract me from my questioning."

"On the contrary, My Dear, I am fairly certain it is you who is now trying to distract me." He returned before rolling her over onto her back and leaning over her.

Sigyn rested her arms on his shoulders.

"This conversation is not over."

"Are you certain about that?" He asked as he brushed the tip if his nose against hers.

"Very certain." She replied before kissing him.

"Strange, but it seems we have changed topics to me." Loki pointed out.

"Well we haven't." She assured, while she brushed Loki's cheek with her hand.

His skin was smooth and cool against hers. She traced up his sharp cheekbone then down his jaw line before brushing her fingers against his lips. Loki's eyes never left hers as he gently grabbed her hand and kissed the tips of her fingers before bringing his own hand to caress her face protectively. That is when it hit Sigyn. Loki had made the decision to travel without any protective escort for her safety.

"You don't trust them… do you?... It's why you want to leave the palace…"

Loki tensed for a second, and that was all the confirmation Sigyn needed.

"Asgard is not as stable as it seems at the moment…The War Council is powerful, Sigyn, and they have no reason to like either you or me right now."

"You are a Prince Loki, your father is the leader of the Council, they wouldn't bring harm to you… they couldn't!"

"After all of these years you are still too trusting. My position will not protect me if they fear me."

"Why should they fear you?"

Loki sat up and rested his elbows on his knees.

"The real question is why shouldn't they fear me? I know everything about them. The members, their families, what they do, what they've done… I am a threat to them. I know their enemies, and could join with them. I am well acquainted with the darker side of the Nine Realms, and could slip into those shadows without a moments notice. I have powers and abilities that they do not understand, and therefore fear. While they employed my talents I posed no threat, but now that I have forsworn the Council, things are different. They know I bear them a grudge, and they may fear that I will seek vengeance upon them."

Sigyn sat up and placed a hand on Loki's arm.

"That is preposterous Loki. Surely they do not think you to be so devoid of honor."

"It may be preposterous, but your father agrees with me. The Council is not fond of me, or you for that matter."

"Me? What cause have I given them to dislike me?"

"You are the reason I have forsworn working for them ever again. They will hold that against you for as long as I refuse to work for them. If they wish to avenge themselves on me they will know to come after you. If they wish to force me back into their services they will know that you are my weakness, my most vital pressure point. Sigyn, you are in far more danger than I am. I cannot trust the palace guards with your safety. I cannot trust the Crimson Hawks with your safety. I cannot even trust Lady Sif and the Warriors Three with your safety. In the grand scheme of things they all report to the War Council, and if the War Council orders them to bring harm to you they will have no choice but to comply."

Sigyn's hand tightened on Loki's arm. Surely he was overreacting. Surely the potential danger to herself was not so great. Still… Loki said her father agreed, and her father was not one to overreact.

"What of Thor? Can we even trust him?"

"If there is anyone in the Nine Realms I would entrust your safety to should something happen to me, it would be my brother. He is to be king. Odin would never soil his heir with such scandal, as turning on members of the Royal Family would bring."

Sigyn's eyes fell to look blankly at the ground. Could any of this really be true? She wished she could say 'no,' but she knew better than that. Loki's reasoning was sound, and his knowledge of the inner workings of the Council was to be trusted. She now understood why Loki found it to be imperative that they leave the palace as soon as possible, but she couldn't help but wonder if it would do any good. No amount of distance could truly separate them from the dangers that the War Council could pose. There would be some advantage in that they would be forced to come to them, but how much of a chance would the two of them stand on their own? The War Council had an army at their disposal…

"Sigyn?" Loki asked in a worried tone.

Sigyn looked back up at Loki.

"I understand why the War Council may wish harm upon you and I, but surely your father would not allow such mischief to befall us."

"My father is the ruler of Asgard, Sigyn. If he thought such mischief to be for the good of Asgard, he would allow it."

"So we are alone?"

"We have your family, my mother, and Thor, but yes, for all practical purposes we are alone."

Sigyn nodded her head in understanding.

"Very well then. Let the War Council do their worst. I don't fear them."

Loki gave her a little half-smile.

"It never crossed my mind to think you did."

He tilted her chin up to kiss her, but just before their lips could meet, Livia's voice piped up.

"My Prince. Princess Sigyn. The ma… oh my! I… I am so sorry… I didn't mean to interrupt!"

Loki drooped his head in disappointment that his romantic attempt had been ruined, but Sigyn just gave the maid a reassuring smile.

"It is quite all right, Livia. What is it you were about to tell us?"

"O…only that the man you requested to show you about the village this evening has arrived."

"Show him to the sitting room and offer him something to drink. Inform him that Loki and I will be there once we finish getting ready."

"Yes, My Lady." Livia replied with a curtsy.

The maid skipped off and Sigyn couldn't help but laugh at Loki's annoyed expression.

"Can't we send him away and enjoy the courtyard some more?"

"Oh it was the courtyard you were enjoying was it?"

"The company was pleasant too." He muttered into her ear.

"Well I fear the courtyard must wait. It was your idea to go explore the town tonight anyways."

Loki put on his best pout, but Sigyn merely patted him on the cheek.

"The courtyard will still be here when we return, Darling."

"Yes, but my company may not be as inclined to enjoy it with me." He returned.

"I am sure she will be as long as you behave yourself till then."

"Behave myself? That is asking a lot of me."

"I know, but I am sure the reward will be worth it."

"Can you guarantee that?"

"I can."

"Then I shall hold you to your word." Loki asserted before rising and assisting Sigyn to her feet.

They quickly stopped by their bedchamber to retrieve a shawl for Sigyn and a light cloak for Loki. Arm in arm, the pair made their way to the sitting room and welcomed their guide. They spoke briefly with him before he led the way to the village. It was a small town, but Sigyn found it to be rather charming. A few of the residents were fully aware of who the two visitors were, but no one bothered them along the way. A stop was made where the garrison was being housed so that Sigyn could drop her letters off to their messenger, and then she and Loki were led to an inn for dinner. Their guide allowed them to eat alone, though he didn't stray too far off. Their guide rejoined them after the quaint meal, and they finished touring the town. Overall Sigyn liked the little village. It seemed so relaxed after spending so long living in the palace. Though they still had a couple of days at the estate, Sigyn had a strong feeling that her current fondness towards it wasn't going to diminish. Loki paid and thanked the guide upon their arrival back at the house, and then he pulled Sigyn inside.

"So did I behave myself to my companion's satisfaction?" He inquired as he pressed her against the wall.

"You did. She was rather impressed." Sigyn answered.

"So then I may hold you to your word concerning my reward?"

"Of course."

Loki's boyish features lit up with excitement and devilishness, reminding Sigyn just how young they actually were. He interlaced his fingers with hers and began to pull her towards the courtyard. Sigyn got the feeling that Loki's plans for "enjoying the courtyard" was going to be rather active, and she was right.

Loki and Sigyn saw Livia off to their next estate on the morning of their last full day at their first estate, and then they set off early the next morning. The second estate was actually a full days ride further from the palace than their first estate had been. Loki's original plan had been to start at this second estate since it was the furthest away from the palace, but he had changed his mind at the last-minute so that they wouldn't have to spend the night in an inn on the way there. This altered their itinerary some, but not enough to throw everything off. The ride to the second estate was pleasant, and Loki and Sigyn spent the trip talking over the first estate they had seen. They had both been fond of it, but neither of them was willing to give a final verdict on it till they had seen a few more estates. The next estate was by far the largest of the estates they would be seeing, so they were scheduled to stay there for well over a week. The grand size of the house and accompanying grounds was rather staggering, and though Sigyn was sure they would enjoy exploring it, she knew that this was not the place for them. Even when they did decide to raise a family, there would still be too many rooms left unused. This would be convenient if they had guests, but two days journey was a bit much for Sigyn's family to travel. She had a feeling that Loki's opinion on the matter was the same as hers, but he was just as thorough with his assessment process as he would have been if the estate were still a likely candidate. The week and a half they spent at the estate was rather busy, so Sigyn was rather relieved when they started their journey to the third estate. The agenda for this estate visit and the others to follow was the same as the first two. Examine the house, explore the grounds, visit any nearby towns, meet with the caretakers of the estate, spend a day or so just 'living' on the estate, and then prepare to do it all again. They spent a week at the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth estates while taking a day or half a day to travel in between each one.

The ride to the seventh and final estate was happy, though a bit tiring. The trip had gone flawlessly up to this point, which Sigyn found to be miraculous. The weather had been in their favor and there had been no delays in preparing the estates. Despite the success of their visits, Sigyn was still a bit worn out. She and Loki were almost constantly on the move, and on the days when they could be relaxing they often found themselves being rather active in other more intimate ways. Not that Sigyn would dare complain, she had loved every moment of this trip with her husband. She felt so free from the cares that had plagued her at the palace, and Loki had admitted that he too felt that same freedom. The final estate was located on Asgard's coastline, and Sigyn knew they were nearing it as the smell of the ocean grew stronger. The estate, when it finally came into view, was stunning. The house sat a little ways off from the edge of a cliff that led down to the beach below. She didn't have time to admire the view however as she knew that Loki would want to get settled in before going off to explore. They led their mounts into the courtyard to find that Livia was standing there nervously.

"What's wrong?" Loki asked knowingly before dismounting and handing his reigns to the stable boy who was driving the coach for Livia.

"It's the main bedroom, My Prince."

"What about it?" He pressed.

"I can't get in it. The caretaker warned me that I wouldn't be able to, but I didn't believe him. I tried anything and everything I could think of, I swear!"

Sigyn had dismounted by this point, and she gave Livia a reassuring smile.

"We aren't upset Livia. Did you have our things taken to a different sleeping chamber?"

"Yes, Princess Sigyn."

"Then there is no harm done." Sigyn stated.

"Though I am interested to see this un-opening door." Loki added.

"Of course, My Prince. Please follow me."

Loki and Sigyn followed their maid to the door in question. Loki placed his hand on the door handle and tried to turn it, but it didn't budge. Loki's eyebrows knitted together as he tried and failed to open it again.

"The handle isn't even budging." Sigyn pointed out.

"No, it isn't." Loki confirmed. "It's as if it is sealed shut."

"Sealed shut? Like how you seal our door when we…" Sigyn looked over at Livia a bit awkwardly and then back at Loki. "You know, when we prefer not to be disturbed." She recovered.

Loki gave her an amused smirk.

"Yes, just like when I seal our door to keep us from being disturbed."

"So you can open it?" Livia asked a bit nervously.

"Possibly, if it is the same sealing spell."

"How many sealing spells can there be?" Livia asked under her breath.

"You would be surprised." Loki muttered.

Loki went silent for a few moments before letting out a sigh.

"It's not any of the ones I use." He stated before letting go of the door handle.

"Well perhaps you will think of some others later. I think it is time we got a little rest though. Will you show us to our sleeping quarters, Livia?"

"Yes, Princess Sigyn."

No one spoke during the short trip from the main sleeping chambers to the chambers Livia had prepared.

"Will you be taking supper in your room?" Livia asked before leaving Sigyn and Loki to rest up a bit.

"I believe that is a good idea, thank you Livia." Loki replied.

The maid gave a curtsey and closed the door on her way out. Now alone, Sigyn plopped down on the edge of the bed and rose the question that she was sure was on Loki's mind at the moment.

"Why is the door to that chamber sealed?"

"I'm not sure. I don't remember coming across anything about it during my research of the estates."

"Surely someone must know. Perhaps I should ask your mother when I write."

"It's not likely she will know anything about it. If anyone had any answers it would be my father, but he didn't mention it when he saw we were coming here."

"Well it is not as if you spent a large amount of time speaking with your father before we left."

"No, but something like this would surely have been worth mentioning to me even in passing."

Loki was right of course. This new development was odd indeed. Loki crossed to his chest and began rummaging through it. Sigyn had no doubt that she knew what he was looking for. Sure enough, Loki pulled out three leather tomes from the chest and crossed over to the bed. He settled himself on the edge and opened one of the books. Sigyn glanced over to see the many runes that covered the pages of his texts on magic. Sigyn knew very little about magic, considering it to be Loki's personal hobby, but she could read all the common runic symbols and some of the not so common ones as well. Loki often told her that she would be a rather strong magician should she choose to learn, though he had given up trying to convince her to take it up years ago. Loki caught her glancing over his shoulder and smiled.

"You look exhausted, Sigyn. Get some rest. I'll wake you when Livia arrives with dinner." He encouraged.

Though interested in her husband's research, Sigyn's sleepiness won out, and she curled up on the bed for a nap.

The next day found Loki and Sigyn exploring the rest of the house. It was a beautiful structure that emitted a strong sense of familiarity to Sigyn. It was simple for she and Loki to navigate the corridors of the home, and each room seemed to already feel homely. Not to Sigyn's surprise, she and Loki found themselves staring down the sealed door at the end of their tour.

"Do you think you know how to open it now?" She asked.

"Possibly. It can't hurt to give it another try."

Sigyn leaned against the wall to watch as Loki fiddled with the door for twenty minutes or so. His attempts ended with his arms crossed in an annoyed fashion, and a bedroom door that was still sealed shut.

"I don't understand it. I've tried just about every sealing, concealing, and locking spell I know." Loki declared.

"Well there is still the possibility that it is a spell that you don't know." Sigyn reminded him. "I am going to write to your mother tonight and see if she has any advice on the matter."

Loki agreed that Sigyn's idea was a good one, and the pair went back to their bedchambers so Sigyn could write. Since it was likely the only free time she would have for the next several days, she determined to write all of her letters at once. She was certain that her parents, Frida, and Hallsteinn would all be interested in the tale of the sealed door, and she wanted to tell her sister about the strangely familiar atmosphere of this estate. Loki wrote his own letters to his mother and brother, but he was finished long before Sigyn was. He spent the rest of the time that she took writing pouring through his magic texts again. Once she was finished she sealed their letters and placed them on the nightstand so she would remember to take them into town with her the next morning. Sigyn and Loki then took dinner in the main dining room and retired to bed for the evening. The next morning found them rising with the sun to make their way to the first of several seaside villages they would be visiting that day. Their first stop was, as always, the garrison stationed in the first village. Sigyn left her letters with the messenger there, and he promised to set off on the half-day ride to the palace immediately. That little housekeeping issue in order, Loki and Sigyn were shown around the rest of the village till lunch. Lunch was taken at an inn, and then they visited the next town over. They spent the afternoon wandering about the streets and then returned to the estate for dinner. Sigyn was able to distract her husband from the conundrum of the sealed door for the rest of the evening, and then they spent the next morning exploring the grounds around the estate. Sigyn examined the stables closely, and Loki took careful note of the smaller buildings on the property and their uses. Just before lunch they decided to take a little stroll down to the beach. They were just reaching the path down however, when Loki spotted Livia rushing towards them with a letter in her hand.

"Surely that isn't a reply from your mother." Sigyn mused aloud.

"It could be, but I can't imagine Livia would rush it to us if it were."

"You think it to be some other news?"

"It seems probable."

Sigyn and Loki made their way towards Livia so the poor maid wouldn't be forced to run as far, and as they drew closer they could see her utter panic. Livia was crying.

"Prince Loki…Princess Sigyn…" Livia gasped out despite her tears.

"Livia what is wrong?" Sigyn pressed urgently, though not unkindly.

"I… my… I'm sorry…"

The maid wasn't able to control her emotions long enough to get out more than a few words at a time, and Sigyn could feel Loki's patience slipping away.

"Livia, I need you to breathe." Loki requested of the hyperventilating maid in an even tone. "I need you to tell me what is going on."

"I… I am… sorry, My Prince. It's just… I just received a letter from my younger brother. My house… our house… was broken into two days ago while he was away, and our mother was attacked."

Sigyn flicked her eyes towards her husband, and she was fairly certain she caught him do the same to her.

"Is she all right?" Sigyn asked.

Livia shook her head 'no.' The maid's tears had stopped now, but she was still shaking.

"She has not woken up since the attack. My brother has spent the last two days caring for her, but he must go back to work…"

"And your father cannot look after her?" Loki enquired.

Sigyn almost slapped her husband on the arm for such a stupid question.

"My father is dead, My Prince." Livia murmured.

Loki tensed for a second, so Sigyn took over.

"Is there anyone who can look after her till you can get there?"

"Perhaps a neighbor can help some, but we can't ask them to care for her for almost five days."

Sigyn looked to Loki, and she could see the confliction in his eyes. In the end however, he did what she had hoped he would do.

"Go pack your things Livia. I'll inform Erlingr to get the coach ready for your immediate departure."

"But Prince Loki! I cannot leave you and Princess Sigyn here alone!" Livia protested.

"Loki and I can fend for ourselves for a few days Livia. Your mother requires your help more than we do." Sigyn assured. "Now come on, I will assist you in packing."

Without another word Sigyn went with Livia to pack her few belongings, and Loki went to inform Erlingr of he and Livia's early departure. Within the hour Livia was on her way home, and Sigyn was left looking at Loki knowingly.

"You don't believe this to be some random occurence, do you?"

Loki clasped his hands behind his back and watched the carriage slip out of sight.

"No, I do not."

"Do you think Livia is in danger?"

"I am not sure, but it seems likely that this was just meant to draw her away from us."

"So the War Council wants to try and handle us now?"

"It certainly appears that way."

"They certainly made a rather quick judgement call about us."

"It is likely that they want to neutralize any potential threat before Thor's coronation. They saw this as their best opportunity to strike, and I can't blame them."

"So what happens now?"

"I am not sure. I don't know what their intentions are. The best we can hope for is that they merely want me under their thumb again so they will take this opportunity to pressure me into it…"

"And the worst we can expect is that they hope to remove the threat you pose entirely."

"The threat we pose, Sigyn."

"Yes, I suppose witnessing the murder of my husband would mean that I could cause some problems for them later on down the road."

Loki continued to stare down the road for a few minutes, and Sigyn stood by his side silently. He was contemplating something important, and she didn't wish to disturb him.

"Sigyn, a long time ago, when we were first married, someone once warned me that you were in danger."

Sigyn looked up at Loki in confusion.

"Someone warned you? Who? Why? Why did they say I was in danger?"

"They said that you knew something about me, something that would put you in harm's way if you threatened to reveal it."

Sigyn's heart began to race, but if Loki noticed her sudden nervousness he didn't mention it.

"I thought it was a ridiculous notion at the time, and I still do, but... the danger is real enough..."

Sigyn took a deep breath. This was it. This was the moment she had been waiting for all of these years. She could finally tell Loki his true heritage. She opened her mouth to confess everything, but Loki continued speaking in that same distracted manner.

"Promise me that if there is some basis for that strangers remark that whatever it is you know about me, or my work for the War Council, will stay between you and your journal."

"Whatever it is?" She pressed.

"Whatever." He reaffirmed. "Swear to me that you will not a tell anyone what it is."

"Not even you?"

"Not even me."

Sigyn cringed inwardly. Didn't Loki see that forcing her to swear this would be to force her to keep the most important secret she had ever known from the person who deserved to know it?

"But Lok…"

Loki placed a finger over her lips and grabbed her jaw.

"Sigyn, I will not see you harmed on my account." Loki stated, suddenly aggressive. "Swear it."

Indecision filled Sigyn. If she tried to blurt it out now Loki would stop her, and would very likely be upset with her for refusing to promise him something. Such a refusal on her part could potentially cause a huge rift in his trust of her, and right now they needed to trust one another…

"I swear it." She intoned softly.

Loki kissed her forehead roughly, and headed back inside the estate.

"I would like to have another look at that bedroom door before we discuss what should be done about lunch." He pronounced.

Sigyn trailed after Loki a bit discouraged. The opportune moment to finally tell Loki what he really was had come and gone, and Sigyn sensed that she may have just lost her chance to tell him forever.
