Al Capone's gang was useless Maka thought as she stalked down the road. They refused to talk to her and Soul and didn't even believe the detectives when told their "leader" had been found dead.
"He can't be dead," one of them cajoled, "he's just off with a hunny!" The others laughed. Soul just shook his head and walked into an adjacent room. Maka tried to argue with the idiots, but had no luck. They just laughed and dismissed her statements. Eventually, after a few minutes of going nowhere, Soul walked back into the room, hands stuffed in his pockets, and declared it time to go.
"Whatever!" Maka spat out, throwing the door open and leaving in a veritable huff. She thought that the gang would've been worried about their member. Maybe they were all high. She should go back and check the whole place for drugs.
"Look what I found." Soul had finally caught up with Maka after her storming out of the building. He was holding something in his hands. It looked strangely like a spider.
"Ew," Maka replied, "I don't like spiders."
"Fair," Soul countered, "But this isn't an ordinary spider. As in, this isn't alive. It's a new drug." Maka was shocked. A new drug. That might explain why no one took her seriously back at the Capone clan.
"Oh, what is it?" She asked. She hadn't seen this particular drug on the scene before. Could the spider have something to do with Arachnophobia? "Where did you find it"
"In the room labeled 'A. Cap'," Soul replied. "I'm guessing it was our victims room. I didn't see it in any of the other rooms though." Well, there went that theory that the rest of the crew back at the Capone camp was all high. At least, not on this new drug. But Maka had a sixth sense kicking in. She knew, not sure how, but she knew that the drug was tied in to the dissections that were taking place. She just didn't know how. Not yet anyway.
Suddenly she had an idea. She had to get back to the station. She remembered reading in the files that a few of the victims were reported missing before they were found eviscerated. Maybe the drug had something to do with that. Wait, how could a drug make people go missing? Were any found in the other victims homes? Maybe some were in the victims bloodstream. She needed to get that drug to Stein.
"Hey Maka," Soul called out, breaking into her thoughts. "We should get this down to the lab. Maybe we can detect it in the blood of some of the other victims too. I feel like this is a somehow critical." Maka just stared at Soul, mouth slightly open.
"That's what I was thinking." Maka replied, still a bit flabbergasted. She knew tying the drug other victims might be a stretch. Other partners would've thought she was crazy and wanted more concrete evidence. But Soul actually made the leap before her. That raised her opinion of him about tenfold. Her face immediately brightened; bad mood and experience forgotten.
"Let's get back to the station!" Maka chirped, bright smile on her face. She felt full of energy and ready to crack this case. Soul cracked a smile in response, and for the first time Maka noticed how handsome he really was. His smile had character and met his eyes. Maka took note of her attraction and filed it away. She couldn't deal with that right now. Also, her mama wouldn't approve.
Twenty minutes later Maka and Soul were back in the squad room trying to work on their case. It was difficult at the moment because of a certain member of their squad. A certain loud, obnoxious member of the squad.
"I AM THE GREATEST DETECTIVE IN THE DEPARTMENT!" Black-Star was screaming out, standing on his desk with one foot up on the monitor of his computer. Tsubaki was actually standing at her own desk clapping for him Maka noticed with slight disgust. She liked Tsubaki, so seeing her bouncing a little on her feet and clapping for the Great Idiot settled poorly in her stomach.
"HEY MAKA!" Black-Star lit on Maka as soon as he saw her enter the room. "GUESS WHO SOLVED THE CASE? ME YOU TINY-TIT BIT..." Black-Star said no more as a large dictionary came down on his skull.
"Good job Tsubaki," Maka said, as she stowed the book away in her desk drawer.
"Thank you Maka," Tsubaki glowed, "but it really is Black-Star that deserves the credit. He figured out the hideout and busted it all by himself." Tsubaki was beaming but Maka was livid.
"HE BUSTED IT BY HIMSELF?!" She screamed, "WHAT THE EVER LIVING FUCK IS WRONG WITH HM?! That's so dangerous." Maka was almost sad she had hit Black-Star already. For this she would have put him into the ground from her Maka-Chop.
"How could you let him Tsubaki?" Maka asked, "You've always been so careful."
"I DIDN'T KNOW YOU CARED ABOUT ME!" Black-Star laughed as he got up off the floor. His hair was still dented from the book Maka brought down on his head earlier. It served as a convenient spot for the next book Maka brought down.
"I don't you idiot!" Maka exclaimed. Black-Star was unable to hear her having been the recipient of yet another Maka-Chop. There was a small amount of drool pooling under him.
"Tsk, tsk," Soul said, as he came up behind Maka. His breath ghosted over the back of her neck and Maka felt the hair stand up on end. "He was kind of asking for it wasn't he? Anyway I just got results back from the lab. Wanna see?" Soul held up the folder in front of her face enticingly. Maka made to grab for it only for Soul to pull back.
"He's going to wake up eventually," Soul flat-lined, "Let's find some place a bit quieter?" Maka knew just where to go.
