King of Hearts
Chapter 59 – Let's Make This Clear.
Don Brock Verno's POV, Verno compound, Los Angeles.
"I can't let you go right now Twig."
"What!? Why!?" He questioned in rage as he approached my desk fully.
Sitting back, I replied.
"Don Cora is going to assault me soon. If you leave, I will have no way to guarantee the safety of my family. These men and my daughter. Without you I'm out an Underboss and Cora has a hole to punch. Try to understand Twig, if I could I would let you go right now. But it's too dangerous for me and for Claire to be left unprotected."
"You promised me I could do this!" Stated Twig in response as I replied in equal stature.
"And you promised me the second you came for my help that you would serve this family with your life! Above everything else Twig you owe me this much! Remp isn't going anywhere and as soon as Cora is dead I promise to offer my full support to finding him. But until that day comes you need to remain here in LA and help me handle this threat."
Twig was clearly angered. I knew this was going to be hard to say to him if he found Remp.
"Family comes first Twig." I stated as he looked to the side to let out a heavy sigh.
It became a matter of me hoping he would stand down from his position now as silence took over for his thoughts and my own to come together. After rubbing the soft side of his face, he looked back at me to ask.
"And if I refuse?"
Those words were questionable. But in a serious way, I stood up from my seat to stand tall with the wolf. Locking eyes, I replied.
"I don't want it to come to that Twig."
In a need for the answer, he asked again in force.
"What happens if I refuse Don Verno?"
Looking towards his chest then back up to his eye, I replied.
"Then me and you are going to have a problem."
Slowly he nodded as I said.
"I have a family to protect. My daughter is the most important thing in the world to me. And I will do whatever I have to do to convince you to stay if it means she will be safe."
Staring back into my eyes, Twig listened as I finished.
"After Cora you can go. But please protect this family. My family. Your family."
Twig looked calm. His one eye had lowered as I had my hands pressed along the edges of my desk. After some time, he looked back up at me to reply.
"Alright. You have a deal. But after Cora you won't stop me from going."
"I don't plan too." I replied in determination as he nodded slowly to offer his hand.
Looking to it in a surprised way. I slowly took it to add.
"I have a plan to deal with Cora. But it can't work without you."
"Just tell me what I have to do."
Smiling softly towards him, I released his hand to sit back in my chair.
Vexer's POV, FBI building, Boston.
"What the hell are you doing here Vexer? I can't be seen talking to you. If my boss finds out he'll...?" Cutting him off, I handed him Hash's phone and ordered.
"I know. I'm sorry, but I need you to trace this number for me."
"This couldn't wait?" Questioned my human friend Dave who worked as a specialist for the FBI here in Boston.
Dave was my go-to source for all information. I had him set already on one lead, but this I knew wouldn't take more then a few minutes to grab.
"No it couldn't. Just find me a location or something on the owner to this number. I'll get out as fast as I came in if you just do it."
Taking the phone from me with a sigh, Dave plugged it into his computer to urge.
"We'll just give me a minute here and I'll pull something up for you."
"Thanks Dave." I replied as he nodded and began to process the number.
This was the worst place for me to be in right now. It was like I was asking to get stung by the feds. But Don Soul said no bullshit. Just get it done.
Watching as he cleared through the system, Dave soon asked.
"Do you know if this is a disposable Vex? I can't help you if it is."
"I know, just give it a try anyway Dave. I need anything here."
Nodding as he entered the unknown number into his computer, I stared on screen as he muttered.
"Hmmm."
"What?" I asked in confusion as he opened up a new tab with what looked to be more numbers then I could shake a stick at.
"This is a secure line. Whoever made the call has some cash and some connections to put it easy for you."
"Why so?" I wondered as he replied.
"Because the only way to get your hands on a system that can block outside signals to the government is by ether one, you work for a place that has one which in this state isn't too many. Or two, you have the right amount of cash to pull a mobile systems blocker off the black market."
"Is there anyway you can trace it?" I asked as he shook his head.
"Not one bit Vex. The most I can tell you is that whoever made the call is somewhere in the state."
"Well that doesn't fucking help me Dave." I stated as he shrugged his shoulders to reply.
"Well I don't know what to tell you Vex."
"What if someone answers? Could you trace it then?" I asked in interest as he rubbed his chin to reply.
"With it being a secure line? All I can do is get you a general location. Not exact mind you. Just a rough area."
"Do it." I ordered him as he transferred the call to the phone on his desk.
"Make it happen." He urged me as I waited for the rings.
"Ring!"
"Ring!"
"Ring!"
"Rin...!" My eyes widened as the ring was cut off.
"Well isn't this interesting." Stated a man over the other end as Dave nodded and got to work.
"Who is this?" I asked in anger as he quickly replied.
"No one you need to get involved with. Now how about you tell me who you are and why you have decided to call me with this phone?"
"You have a friend of mine."
With a gentle chuckle on his end he replied.
"You must be Vexer. Funny...Hash mentioned you earlier when he was awake. I think his exact words were "when Vexer finds out about me he'll come for all you assholes and shove half a mile of hell up your asses."
"Yeah that sounds like something I would do." I stated with a small smile as he calmly replied.
"Well listen here Vexer. Let me save you the effort in tracking me down. In about an hour I will be done here with Hash. When that happens, I will simply call Don Soul and tell him personally that I will be there for him next. All you have to do is wait. Easy right?" He wondered as I quickly stated.
"That's not going to happen. And I don't know who you think you are, but if you lay one hand on Hash I'll kill you."
"Well I guess I'm screwed then since me and all my friends have had our way with him these past few hours. He's been quite fun with all his threats and attempts at escape. I'll give him credit for being as much as a pest as he has been with all the blood leaking out his body."
Getting madder I replied.
"You just wait. Because in the next hour I'll be there to show you exactly what happens when you screw with the Soul family."
"By all means Vexer. Give it a try. I'll be more then glad to hang the both of you."
Right after those words; he hung up leaving me with Dave who stated.
"He's somewhere in the Financial district."
"Fuck!" I shouted as he urged.
"It's not that bad. There isn't many places around that he could hide. Look." Pointing to the screen to show me a bird's eye view of the area he stated.
"From what I could get, he could only be stationed at one or two places. Especially if he's packing the power needed to push the compound. But this may be your best bet at finding him."
Looking as he zoomed in, I widened my eyes to question.
"Why there?"
Looking up to me, Dave replied.
"When I look through the systems there, someone authorized the top floor to be closed down today for maintenance. If I had to put money on it, that is where your boy is."
Patting his shoulder, I took Hash's phone and shouted.
"Thanks Dave! Keep me posted on that other thing!"
"Got you!" He replied as I booked it back out to the car to get Don Soul on the horn.
"I got a location for you." I stated as I began to drive.
"Where Vexer?" He asked as I got back on the main road.
"The Hancock building. Top floor."
"Alright I'll send some guys out behind you."
Shaking my head as I drove, I replied.
"No boss. The guy who has him plans to assault the compound. He's coming for you. Get everyone on guard while I go after Hash."
"Fuck!" Shouted Don Soul as it was clear he was enraged.
"I'll call back when I have him. Just keep inside and get your Praetorian guard on watch outside the office."
"Be careful Vexer!" Ordered Don Soul as I nodded and hung up to head for the Hancock building.
Well now we get to have some fun with Hash. Any new ideas as to who it is that is going after Don Soul and Hash? If you read Ace of Spades then you may already have a good idea. Leave a love and a hug and I'll have another chapter on soon.
