Chapter Fifty Nine.
"This is weird. This match is weird. I want to cheer but I feel as if I'm interfering in an important domestic dispute between siblings." Umeko said quietly wanting to throw her arms up but held them close to her body.
The others felt the same. They admit that their matches were odd at times, but this one was a bit more complicated. They glanced down to Ryuzaki sensei and she seemed to be the only person acting normally. For the time being, the team kept quiet.
Fuji continued her service game with several cut serves, which threw Yumi off. Though Yumi hit the ball and aimed in the right place, the ball always went to the left or to the right of her court. Fuji's points were quickly creeping up. Yumi looked to the scoreboard and then her team. Her sensei's eyes were weighting heavy on her. Yumi began to think silly thoughts. I should have just won the match and kept my cool. But she's so annoying… She gripped the handle and faced Fuji.
"You think you've won this don't you?" Yumi barked when the umpired called the games at five all. "You think I didn't notice, above us, you're holding it hostage." Fuji's twitched. What did her sister discover? "You're not a god, you're a devil. Forbidding me from using my move. I'll free it."
Fuji understood. "Yumi, don't!"
"Escape!"
Fuji held out a desperate hand but it was too late. With a single word, Yumi freed the surrounding breeze that Fuji was going to use to her advantage. It hovered for a bit and flew north of Japan. Fuji wasn't given a chance to gather her thoughts when Yumi served. Fuji didn't run for it, letting the easy shot pass her.
How did Yumi do that? How? Did she know it was there all this time? Fuji rubbed her eyes and fixed her hair in place. It was starting to feel as if everyone and everything was leaving her? No. Don't give up yet. She got ready for the next serve and returned it, giving Yumi the chance to hit a twist spin shot. Fuji didn't hear the sound. She saw the dis-ease in her sister's movements.
What more could Fuji do to stop Yumi from hurting herself? Fuji looked at her hands – looked at what she allowed to happen and decided to give in to it. She understood that giving Yumi what she wanted up set her, but she couldn't put it off any longer. She looked up to Yumi with angry eyes and spoke.
"Fine." Fuji surrendered to the energy within and it happily took over her. "I'll play you seriously."
Ryuzaki sensei nodded and the girls paid close attention. Also those who felt Fuji's energy in the beginning now realised just what she was holding back. They couldn't move.
"Too late for that." Yumi said as she served.
She waited for Fuji to return the ball when the umpire called it as Fuji's point.
"What?" She yelled out. He pointed behind her where she saw the ball roll back off the wall.
Did Fuji return the ball? How! She didn't even move! It wasn't her disappearing serve. Then what? Yumi pulled another ball out and served it the same way. She saw Fuji move and a yellow blur hovered in front of her. Could that be the ball? The umpire gave the point to Fuji. She realised that blur was the ball moving in front of her. Did it bounce down? It must have. How can such a shot be allowed? Faster then the eye can see. Whatever! She served again and this time Fuji hit a manageable return shot. It was a lob that caught off the edges of her racket. Yumi smashed it down. It was only when the ball left Yumi's racket did she realised her mistake. Her sister's Higumi Otoshi flew over her head just as quick. By the time it landed down, the thought was realised.
"40-0."
Yumi shook it off. She wiped the sweat from her head and served. What she thought was an accidental lob was deliberate because Fuji repeated the move. Yumi waited for it to hit down and hit it in the far left of Fuji's court. Fuji jumped for it in the same fashion that Kikumaru would. The returning shot had the same effects of a drop volley. A light and high return over the net that hit down softly. No chance for Yumi to catch it.
Yumi fixed her hair in place and carried on but she couldn't gain any points, making the score an uncomfortable 6-5. Now it was Fuji's serve. Yumi tensed up and took her place on the baseline. Fuji stared at the ball. She could feel it sliver through her, barely able to keep it under control. She gripped it and mumbled to herself not to hurt Yumi, because it wanted to. She tossed the ball up, off the tips of her fingers and smashed the ball. It was a terrible serve. Strong, but careless. It was a fast ball that went straight for Yumi's arm. Had she not moved the ball would have caught her wrist. A synchronised gasp came from the crowd when Yumi dropped her racket.
"What am I doing." Fuji mumbled and waited for the umpire to finishing talking to Yumi. "I'm still hurting her."
Yumi clinched her wrist. It barely missed her, just grazing her skin like a *tatami burn. Yumi shook. Her mind remembered more of her past and she froze. Fuji's true energy was partly out and Yumi didn't know if she wanted to face her now. Out of habit she picked up her racket and stood ready. Fuji continued to talk to herself. The umpire asked her to be careful.
Fuji took another ball and Yumi could do nothing more then get ready for it. Strangely enough, they were both scared. They couldn't stop at this point, it would be too thoughtless, especially after Yumi's outburst. To throw in the towel now would be shameful. They had to finish. Yumi gripped the racket, gritted her teeth and called out to Fuji. The spectators faced her.
"D… Don't hold back. You didn't hit me, but you wanted to. Don't hold back!"
If only Yumi could see the outrage in Fuji's eyes. Fuji kept her sight to the ground and well hidden behind her hair. She'd have to finish this quick so that she didn't leave Yumi with any serious injuries. She spun the ball and hit it. She forgot Yumi could return that shot and had to run to the right of her court to get the ball. She missed it. 0-15; Yumi's point. Fuji tossed the ball up and jumped up to hit it. It went down a little fast. Yumi barely caught it. The ball was aimed at her racket, with the angle Yumi held the racket at, caused the ball to lob up. No sense in wasting an easy shot. The score now 15-all.
Fuji walked back and noticed she wasn't as fierce as she was maybe two shots ago. Could that be Yumi's interference… or maybe Yokoishi? She looked across to her team and was amazed by how silent and vigilant they were. When Yokoishi was like that, she couldn't do much. Who else? She scanned the crowd quickly. Nobody among them could calm it.
She gasped. Maybe Tezuka was here!
That… that wouldn't be a good thing. For him to see her in this state. She wiped her cheeks and rubbed her hands together. The thought of him knowing about her state of mind was more alarming then facing her sister. Oh yeah, Yumi was waiting patiently in front of her. She wiped her eyes again. It really was too bright. She tossed the ball up and squinted. She hit the ball carelessly again, giving Yumi a chance to hit it with that twist spin shot. 15-30.
No, he definitely wasn't here… of course, he was getting ready to go to Germany. Fuji tucked her racket under her arms and wiped her face with bother hands. Her thoughts were leading her astray. This match was pushing her beyond her limits.
"Ah, Fuji-chan… something's wrong with her. I knew she wasn't okay." Kikumaru started to worry. She noticed Fuji's unusual fidgeting.
"Yumi-neechan's not all that strong but she's hitting onee-chan's buttons." The team were shocked when Chise spoke. She sat with her head in her hands, watching patiently.
Yokoishi stood up and took a deep breath. "COME ON FUJI-SENPAI. ONLY A FEW MORE POINTS! SEIGAKU! FIGHT-O!" She couldn't hold it in any longer, knowing that Fuji's aura would disapprove of this out cry.
It was enough to get Umeko cheering Fuji on as well. Soon Shikawara, Nariko and Kikumaru got behind her. Ryuzaki-sensei looked to her girls, who were anxious and quiet for the most part. She was glad that they still believed in their captain. Now all she wanted was Fuji to pull herself together.
Chise jumped up too. "Onee-chan! Yumi nee-chan still loves you very much!"
That shocked everyone. The team looked to Chise, the coaches looked at her, St. Rudolph looked to her and the surrounding spectators too.
Yumi looked up. "Stop interrupting the match, you brat!" She shouted out in annoyance, but her redden cheeks said it all.
Fuji didn't know what to think of it. Her team called out for her to win. That gave her a bit of joy. They didn't abandon her. They still believed she could over come this setback. She moved her hands from her eyes. And what did Chise say? Fuji glanced over to Yumi and lowered her hands again. She didn't know how true it was but the thought shoved that domineering energy back a few paces.
She wanted to smile, but more so, Fuji wanted to ask Yumi if what Chise said was true… maybe not right now. Maybe after the match?
Fuji bounced the ball in the court twice, deciding what to do. Once she got a game plan in her mind she served an easy ball. Yumi was too distracted to see the easy shot and whacked it back. It hit the net and bounced into Fuji's court. They didn't expect that. It was now set point. She didn't want Yumi to win back a set. With the breeze she held on to flown far, far away Fuji would have to wait for the next one before she could use that move. At least now it gave her an idea to develop a new move.
For now she served an average ball. Holding back that energy took a lot out of her and the length of the match seemed to leave Yumi panting. Fuji chose to carry on with her game plan and hit the easy ball. This time Yumi sent it over the net not going for the twisted spin shot. Fuji hit it with a heavy backspin. When it landed it bounced up away from Yumi who swung out for it. 30-40.
Fuji got the next point with a deep angled serve to the right of the court. Deuce.
Now that Yokoishi had screamed out above that dark energy, the other school members were able to call out to Yumi, telling her to hang in there. Don't encourage her, Fuji thought. What could she do now? A cut serve. She sent that over the net. Yumi caught it. By dumb luck, the ball flung itself in the direction of Fuji's court and landed just beyond the net.
"Advantage, St. Rudolph."
The schools cheered for Yumi to keep going. A cut serve no longer worked on her. Now what? Any longer and that dark energy would push through. Whoever quenched it earlier, their effort was fading and she was feeling compelled to be reckless.
A cooling breeze ran through and Fuji paused. Should she call to it? By the time she decided to do so it was already gone. Would it still listen to her? Maybe it would come back? For the time being she served. Yumi still had some power left in her. She sliced the ball over the net. Fuji had to run for it to keep it in play. Yumi backhanded it, senting Fuji over to her left. She had to stretch forward to get the ball and got it. Yumi was waiting with a twist spin shot; Fuji was waiting with a rising shot.
"Advantage, Seishun Academy. Match point."
They both wiped the sweat from their face and neck. Their teams screamed out louder, drowning out the umpire's need for quiet. It took a while for everyone to fall silent. Fuji held the ball on the face of her racket. She thought briefly of a strategy and served, when she felt that passing breeze again. She still had a chance to use it! Yumi returned the ball and Fuji put a quick and heavy backspin on the ball. It flew over the net and dipped. It didn't go up! She missed it. Yumi was by the net, ready to do a drop volley. Fuji ran in to catch it and ended up skidded forward onto her hands. Her ball went high. Yumi doubled back and backhanded it to the other side of Fuji's court. Fuji scrambled to her feet and barely managed to return it, popping it on the edge of her racket. It just reached Yumi's court, but she was there waiting for it. Fuji looked up and noticed that the breeze had come back and ruffled her hair. It carried on for a while giving her a third chance. She had to go for it. Yumi sliced the ball. Just what Fuji wanted! She ran in-court to get the low rising ball and gave it an extra added backspin before the breeze travelled on. She watched and waited to see what the ball would do.
Yumi watched the ball and stepped back to get the deep shot. She swung her hands back to get the ball but it didn't dip. It continued to travel high and towards her face. She moved her head and saw from the corner of her eye that the ball shot up into the sky. Fuji sighed with great relief and was ready to give herself up to that dark energy. The ball belted down in Yumi's court. The backspin caused it to bounce back towards Fuji's court. Before Fuji dropped to her knees she caught the returned ball firmly in her hands.
"G-game, set and match. Seishun academy advance to the next round."
"No!" Yumi protested. "How! How is that move not illegal?"
"The ball bounced down in your court and you were unable to return it. That much is within the rules. It's allowed, and, I think I've bent the rules enough for one day."
Fuji rolled over onto her back and covered her eyes. She heard Yumi dash her racket down, before a huge round of applause came from the spectators. Fuji quickly wiped away small tears and pushed herself up onto her knees. She saw Yumi standing by the net, glaring down at her. That's right… it's over. Fuji got up. She left the racket and ball on the floor and joined Yumi by the net. They didn't shake hands. That much still felt awkward. Yumi lowered her head and sniffled. She had to bring her arm up to shield others from seeing the tears in her eyes. Even after given Yumi what she wanted, she still wasn't happy. Fuji was 'damned if she did, and damned if is didn't'. Fuji lifted a tired hand and quickly comforted Yumi by stroking the top of her hair. So she was this much taller. Seeing that Yumi didn't flinch, Fuji ran her finger across the scar. It was a perfect curved line by her hairline. A glass wound… so many years ago… Before Yumi whipped Fuji's hand away, Fuji lowered her's by her side. She wanted to say something but didn't know quite what to say.
"Can both school's line up!"
Fuji looked to see her team run out to hug her. She was glad that she didn't let them down. They faced St. Rudolph and bowed deeply, thanking them for a great match. That was it. They could go home for the day. In a few days time they would play the winners of tomorrow's match.
"Captain, your match was so amazing! I wish it were me playing with that much emotion. You're my hero, captain!" Umeko was beside herself and gave Fuji another big hug. It seems she was truly in awe of what she saw.
Though Fuji wasn't quite sure what there was to be proud of, she took Umeko's hands and held her when she caught Arai's gaze.
"What can I say. You play like you always do." Arai said.
It took Fuji a moment to understand what Arai was talking about, but she understood and couldn't argue against it. It certainly looked like she was aiming for it. Truth was, she wasn't aimed to humiliate her sister at all. Her games just turned out that way. Umeko never let go of Fuji's hand and pulled her towards the gate. Before she left she went over to the bench to get her bag. Ryuzaki-sensei smiled sympathetically.
"How do you think it went?"
"… I must have scared you, sensei"
"Be honest, you could have done a lot better then that. I guess I was wrong… not even your sister could pull out your serious game." Fuji picked up her bag. "Reflect on it and come back with a wining attitude. All right! Let's pack it up!"
Kikumaru handed Fuji her ball and racket and she placed it in her bag. She hid her broken racket under her towel and zipped it up. As she stood up she turned to see what St. Rudolph were doing. Their vice captain, who played Umeko, pushed Yumi's head to apology to her team. Fuji didn't like the heavy hand being used but even she could understand why it was used. Fuji looked back slowly and placed her bag down to sit on the bench. The team got their things ready. She just wanted to breathe and try and understand what happened.
She could have sworn 'that' part of her was going to come out. She remembered the burning sensation that travelled through her, so why did it calm down suddenly?
Fuji heard her sister's voice, loud and tear stricken. Fuji watched Yumi stretch her hand out to someone. Another took a hold of her and pulled her up into the stands alongside them.
"Your match looked intense Fuji-senpai. Well done for winning." Shikawara patted her shoulder as she walked up the stairs to wait on ground level.
Yokoishi plonked down beside Fuji and sat quietly. Fuji looked across to her then down at her hands. She knew Yokoishi was going to say something about the match, so glanced over to Yumi to see that peacock with his arm over her shoulder. Fuji twitched.
"That… was some serious energy Fuji-senpai. It's not something that should have come out." Fuji rubbed her arm not looking to her team mate. "Make sure you see him before he goes tomorrow."
Fuji was about to react. Instead of thinking how did Yokoishi know, she should have thought, what doesn't she know! Fuji nodded and Yokoishi collected her things.
"Fuji, lets go." Kikumaru called to her. Chise stood with her.
"Hold on." Fuji took to her feet. The thought of leaving the park with that image in her mind's eye would only add to her misery. She left her stuff with Kikumaru and walked over to Yumi and that peacock. She certainly didn't approve.
More so, why would Yumi let such a person get that close to her? He managed to make her laugh through her tears and that only annoyed Fuji more. The closer she got the more she got to see how comfortable the two were together. This really hit a nerve.
Yumi was the first one to catch sight of Fuji walking towards them and she got defensive.
"What do you want now? Isn't winning enough for you?" She would have gone on had her young friend not placed his arm in front of her, stopping her from talking.
He stepped forward and was all the more ready to talk to Fuji.
"Nice to meet you Sumiko Fuji."
Fuji shuddered. "Don't call me by my first name. It's sempai to you."
He flinched… did she just rebuke him? Yumi pulled him back. "There's no need to be so rude-"
"Shut up, Yumi."
Yumi would have retorted back, but that energy began to leak out again and she didn't want to face it for a third time. Fuji turned to her young male friend, disgusted that Yumi automatically slipped her arm around his.
"Erm, my apologies… sempai."
"Who are you?" Fuji questioned.
By then, both schools and some spectators were curiously looking over. Fuji asked. She definitely wanted the name of this cocky git. He forever had a mischievous smirk rippled across his pale face and curly black hair that he rapped around his fingers cunningly. Not very intimidating but he thought enough of himself to play with a strand of it.
"Who am I?" He said a little surprised by the question. "Why, I'm Hajime Mizuki, I'm a third year student."
Oh, an older boy taking advantage of my sister… Fuji was too far good to think sensibly. "And, are you acquaintence of my sister?"
"Acquaintence? Erm," He realised he shouldn't say too much, Yumi's grip tightened. "We just happen to play tennis for the same school, if that's what you mean."
"Who taught her that move, that twist spin shot? Do you know?"
Even though Yumi squeezed his arm again Mizuki couldn't resist gloating. "Such a move could only have been taught by me. It was the perfect move for her and she was willing to learn."
Fuji's first thought was lacking some facts. Having heard him speak, it was certainly starting to sound true. Was he taking advantage of Yumi's desire to win or her ignorance? By the look on his face, he didn't seem to care all that much.
"Let me give you a warning?" Fuji finally got to the point.
"A warning?" He repeated.
Before he had time to say another word, Fuji lifted her hand up to strike him. She swung her hand back and forcefully went for him. Just as her hand was about to impact over his cheek, Fuji halted the force and cupped her hand over his cheek, lightly tapping him.
"You-you." He could barely speak as his awareness came back to him.
It was only now that Fuji could smile, she knew the intent behind it. "Thank you for looking after my sister."
"Aneki, what are you doing?" It seems Yumi was a little beside herself that she didn't hear what she said.
Mizuki didn't know if he should be thankful that Fuji didn't slap him, because he could feel something seep into the pores of his skin though her hands. Was that the warning she was talking about? He could feel a dark energy come over him, and images began to fill his mind of what Fuji would do to him if he taught Yumi any more dangerous moves, if he took advantage of her naivety and if he so much as touched Yumi, Fuji would kill him. All of that evil intent he felt behind her hand and in her smile that once it ended, a cold sweat came over him. "H-hai, sempai."
Fuji turned back to her team not caring that everyone saw what she did. She felt a little better but that didn't mean that it was a good thing.
"Please don't tell me you just attacked that guy?" Arai was shocked.
"Ooh, did my hero just vanquish a bad guy?" Umeko was on cloud nine.
"Do you really think I would?" She wanted to!
"Nobody in the team would hit anybody." Kikumaru said, wanting to hurry up and leave.
"Didn't you hit Sai-senpai the other day?" Shikawara added.
"…Shikawara-chan! You now what I mean. It's not like Fuji to hit people."
"Tell that to her sister." Arai was about ready to go and pulled Umeko along with her.
Fuji didn't appreciate what Arai said and really didn't like that part of her character. If she were any closer she would have said something. Forget it. Chise, who was now a part of the group, held Fuji's hand. She, in her own right felt the energy throughout the match and even that which poured out from Fuji's hand, but it was an aura she was used to feeling so it didn't bother her as much as it did the others.
"Onee-san. Thank you for winning! You really-"
Fuji squeezed her nose. "Don't be so quick to speak."
"Wah! But I was only looking out for you."
Fuji pinched harder and only let go when someone called out to her.
"It's been a while, hasn't it. Have you missed me?"
Ah, that voice… she wasn't sure if he would show up, but she guessed the idea of him not showing up would be out of the ordinary. Fuji was about to face him when Kikumaru grabbed her arm and tried to pull her up the stairs. Fuji couldn't help but glare at her. Kikumaru avoided her eyes.
"Fuji, we need to leave now."
So that's why she was in such a hurry. "You know I like to hang around the courts after a match."
"You forbid Yumi-chan from using that move, so I forbid you from hanging around."
Fuji didn't like that. She didn't like being told what to do, especially not when in this mood. She flicked Kikumaru off her hand and told her to go back with the rest of them, Chise too. Kikumaru couldn't believe what she was hearing. After everything that had happened, she thought Fuji would have had a bit more sense. Kikumaru only saw that picture this morning. She saw how it affected Fuji and she was still willing to be alone with him.
"Fine!" Kikumaru walked off, instead, she grabbed Chise's hand and dragged her off, despite Chise protesting to stay with Fuji.
With them out the way Fuji turned to see him standing with a smirk on his face. What did he have to be so confident about? He didn't say anything. He just watched her. Though he couldn't hold back from sniggering. Fuji diverted her eyes.
"What's wrong, you don't seem so playful today?" He started.
She refused to say anything.
"Hmm? That's okay, because your silence tells me that you've experienced the breaking of your foundation-"
She shoved him away from her. The shove didn't look all the strong, but the energy behind it made him stagger down two steps. He had to steady himself, less he lose his balance and tumble down pass the gate and onto the court.
"If you don't leave me alone, I'll do to you what you did to his arm."
He straightened out his school uniform that her hand wrinkled and was slightly intrigued by her choice of words. "Oh, you mean, you'll suss out my weakness? Good luck." He shook his head in dismay. "It seems that you've completely missed the aim of my fascination, Fuji-chan. Gosh, I believe I've given you too much credit… It's almost pointless to pity you, but I will." He combed his fingers through his hair and looked towards St. Rudolph, the last few were packing up and going. "If you think my aim was to break Tezuka-kun… you'd be very wrong. Even with him out of the line-up the team can still go on without him. He was never my aim. Why? Did you think he was? Me finding that Achilles heel was… fortunate. He hid that very well from me, up until now, but," Atobe walked back up the two steps. "you thinking he was my soul aim is rather telling on your part. Is he really your foundation, Fuji-chan? He's that important to you?"
She grew rigid and could do nothing but listen.
"Hmm, I'll be honest with you, he was blocking something. For me, it's a good thing that he's leaving. Now I can see the you that I've been looking for."
"What are you saying?"
"Oh, you're getting it now, are you? It's strange. I had to get an explanation from the girls in my school about the way you lot play. It's very admirable, using a spiritual energy and such… so when I felt something different, a few years ago, I wanted to feel it again. Just to make sure that I wasn't imaging things." He stepped closer. "What I felt, that day, two years ago, was that dark energy in you and I wanted to bring it out."
Fuji tried to think back to two years ago… did she ever let it out… maybe, once when they had just moved from Chiba, but it was only a little and she never used it after that. That would mean that Atobe was around that area at the time. Well she couldn't rule out the idea, but for him to be plotting this from way back when, she couldn't believe it.
"I always get what I want!" He chuckled successfully. "And what I wanted was to see the real you. But, if I knew you were so obedient to your little sister, I would have put you together sooner." He turned away from Fuji and sat down. He got tried of looking at her defeated eyes. They were still open. "Today was a really beautifully game… to think you would do anything for her, even throw a match and unleash that part of you. I feel stupid for not knowing sooner. Now all I need to do is sit back and witness your actions."
She was shaking. Fear, confusion and fragility made her cover her mouth. She was completely wrong. Every through and action, all those that she had hurt… it didn't have to be. She couldn't believe she was so wrong. And now Tezuka was leaving, and for what? And she needed him even more than before.
"…Why did you… to my shoulder, that day?"
He hummed a laugh. " I wonder." And said nothing more. He took to his feet. "Please put on a great show for me, one that will not disappoint."
To hear his chuckling in her ears as he walked on, broke her further. She had to sit down and cover her eyes with her hands. She wanted to scream, to cry, to let the maddening frustration out, but it held it in. It would feed on it, and when that part of her was ready, it would use it. Fuji listened to Atobe's footsteps creep away and didn't know what to think. The only words that rolled over in her mind was that she was wrong. She was wrong and now she was a danger to those around her.
Why didn't she think that that was her foundation? Her own guard against her 'self'? "…I've really been careless…" The words nearly made her cry, because it was as if he was warning her of this, and she never listened to him.
Fuji sat alone on the spectators' seats for several hours with her eyes covered by her hands. It was only when a familiar voice called her did she turn around. Her older brother stood patiently waiting for her. She felt comfort in seeing his smile. He came down and sat with her.
"I watched your match today. It was great to see you two together again."
"It wasn't that great." So it was her brother's energy that calmed her a little.
"Yumi was really in awe for you."
"Stop it. She… aniki, I'm tired. I'm really exhausted."
"I know." He said. He picked up her bag and helped her up. "You pushed yourself too far." He said that because this would be the third time he has seen her on the brink of it all. He knew what was to come, so he wanted to get her home before she became completely immobile and ended up getting locked inside the park. He took her by her arm and pulled her up the stairs before taking her cold hands and leading her back to the car to get some much needed rest.
… tbc…
A/N2: wow, too much going on at once! And what is Atobe thinking?
*Tatami burn: I put carpet burn in there, then realising that it's not carpet, is it… So if it sounds weird, that's why.
