Chapter 14:
I had to admit that even I was laughing at Mean Girls. That Damian guy was just too much. When Janis described him as, "too gay to function," Alec snickered and said, "Hmm, who does that sound like? Magnus?"
Magnus of course, laughed his ass off at that. "'She doesn't even go here!'" he quoted.
Our laughter was cut off by the doorbell. "I got it!" Izzy chirped as she ran off to get the pizza.
Alec paused the movie, fearing Izzy's wrath if she missed a good part.
Clary, who was sitting beside me on the couch, turned around and smiled at me. "This was a good idea. I really needed this."
I winked at her. "I'm not just gorgeous, you know. I have a brain as well, and sometimes I can even use it."
She laughed. "If I remember correctly, this was my idea."
I wagged a finger at her. "No, pizza was your idea. Movie night with everyone was my idea."
She laughed again. Just hearing the sound made me smile. It was such a beautiful sound that I would've spent the rest of my life listening to it if I could.
Izzy walked in then, carrying three large pizza boxes. "Jace, go get plates from the kitchen."
I smirked at her and leaned back into the couch. "What's the magic word?"
"Please," she hissed out between her teeth.
Jumping up, I swept her a gallant bow. "Your wish is my command, Your Majesty." I turned my back to her to go into the kitchen, and she took the opportunity to throw a pillow at my back. Without turning around, I stuck my middle finger up at her. She only laughed.
I turned back around, six plates in hand, only to find Clary right behind me. "Jesus!" I swore. "I didn't hear you come in here!"
Clary laughed. "Sorry!"
I rose an eyebrow at her. "Did you think I couldn't handle the plates by myself?"
Clary rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I thought those paper plates may have been too heavy for you."
I gasped dramatically. "Are you calling me weak, Fray?"
She shrugged and grabbed a water out of the fridge.
I put my forearm across her chest to trap her against the refrigerator door. Leaning in close, I smiled menacingly at her. "Do you need me to show you exactly how strong I am?"
She swallowed. "N-no."
I pulled away. "Good." She looked at me skeptically. Just when she turned to walk away, thinking that the cost was clear, I threw her over my shoulder and carried her into the family room.
"Jace!" she shrieked. "Put me down!"
I laughed. "That's what you get for calling me weak."
She groaned and hit my back with her small fists. Once we were into the family room again, I dropped her onto the couch unceremoniously. Someone cleared their throat behind me.
"If you two are done flirting," Magnus drawled, "some of us would like to eat before we lose our appetites any further."
I glanced at Clary. She was blushing at the flirting comment, but I merely laughed it off. "Oh, of course. Because you and Alec are so sensitive about your PDA."
Now Alec blushed and Magnus laughed loudly. "Fair enough. But seriously, I'm hungry. Give me a plate."
I set the plates onto the table and sat down beside Clary. She was still blushing, and it only deepened when I winked at her. This was definitely a good night.

Clary had fallen asleep part way through the second movie. Her head was resting on my lap and I was running my fingers through her wild flames of hair. Simon had gone home after Mean Girls, saying his mom would kill him if he wasn't home by eight o'clock.
The phone started ringing from the kitchen. Maryse or Robert must have answered it though, because it only rang once.
A few minutes later, Maryse walked in. "Jace," she said. Her eyes flicked to Clary and back to me. "That was Principal Jeremiah."
I sat up straighter, careful not to wake Clary. "What did he say?"
Maryse smiled. "You have in-school suspension for the rest of the week, but other than that you're off the hook. He said he couldn't punish a man defending a woman and keep a clear conscience."
Izzy was grinning. "I told you!"
I was laughing, immensely relieved. "Thank you, Maryse. Truly, thank you."
Maryse walked over to me and kissed the top of my head. It was a very motherly thing for her to do. "Of course, Jace. And in case you're interested, I weaseled out of him what Meliorn's punishment is."
Alec rose an eyebrow. "Jail? Because that's what he deserves."
Maryse rolled her eyes. "That's a little drastic. No, he is suspended for the rest of this week and has in-school suspension all next week."
Magnus let out a low wolf whistle. "Damn. That's harsh."
I turned to him. "Yeah, but he deserves it."
Maryse put a hand on my shoulder. "Well, children, Robert and I are going upstairs. You know what that means – unless you're my child, please go home." She turned to me. "Should you give Clary a ride? I don't want her falling asleep at the wheel."
I looked at Izzy. "Will you drive her car if I drive her?"
"Of course," Izzy said, already getting her coat.
I didn't really want to wake Clary. She looked so peaceful sleeping. Her lips were turned up ever so slightly, making me assume she was having a good dream. "Clary," I whispered in her ear. "Clary, come on. You have to go home, hon."
She groaned.
I chuckled to myself. "Come on, Clary," I said a little less gently. "You have to get up."
"Ugh, I'm up," she mumbled. She sat up slowly and rubbed her eyes. "What time is it?" she asked through a yawn.
I checked my phone. "A little after nine. Come on, Izzy is going to drive your car and I'm bringing you home."
Clary shook her head and started putting her coat on. "No way. I can drive myself." She would've been a whole lot more convincing had she not yawned halfway through her sentence.
I just looked at her. Izzy stood beside me, her hand outstretched for Clary's keys.
With a grumble, she dug them out of her pocket and dropped them in Izzy's palm.
"Goodbye, ladies!" Magnus called.
Clary gave a very un-heartfelt wave and Izzy said, "Bye, Maggie."
Just before the door closed behind us, we heard him yell, "Don't you dare call me that, Isabelle!"
I looked at Clary out of the corner of my eye as we pulled out of the driveway, Izzy right behind us. "Did you have fun?" I asked.
She shot me a lazy smile. "Yeah, I did. Thanks again. You're too good to me." I nearly jumped in surprise when she leaned across the center consul and pecked a kiss on my cheek.
"You're welcome," I mumbled. Probably for the first time in our friendship, I was the one blushing and Clary was the one laughing. That girl knew just how to get to me. And I loved it.
