Chapter 15:

After spending three days of school without talking to anyone, I was dying for some social interaction by the time Friday came around. Lucky for me, an invitation for just that was waiting by my locker at the end of the day.

Aline was leaning against my locker door, her cell phone in her hands and typing away like crazy. She was so busy texting that she didn't even notice me walking up to her. I cleared my throat loudly and she finally looked up. "Oh! Hey, Jace!"

"Aline," I nodded. Her perfume kind of made me want to sneeze.

She stepped aside so I could get into my locker. "So, did you hear about the party tonight?"

I rose an eyebrow at her. "What party?"

She gave me a flirty smile and flipped her hair over one shoulder. She was trying way too hard. Four words: Been there, done that. "Oh, just this little party that Ragnor Fell is having."

I let out a low whistle. "Damn. His parties are always good."

Aline smirked seductively. At least, I think it was supposed to look seductive. "It starts at nine. I'll see you there." With a wink she turned and strutted away.

"Wow. If she swings those hips any harder she's going to dislocate them."

I turned around to find Clary watching Aline with a look of distaste. I laughed. "Am I mistaken, Miss Fray, or do you sound jealous?"

She snorted. "More like disgusted."

I closed the door to my locker and slung my arm over her shoulders, leading her to my car. "You should come to the party with me tonight."

Clary laughed. "That's a good one."

"I mean it! You'd have fun."

Clary chewed on her thumbnail, something she did when she was uncomfortable. "Well…I don't know. I kind of already have plans with Izzy and Magnus."

"What? What on Earth are you guys doing together? You have nothing in common!"

Clary shrugged. "They invited me shopping."

"You hate shopping!" I laughed.

"That may be, but now that Jonathan's home and he and my parents are always fighting I don't want to stay home and deal with it."

I threw my hands up, but quickly replaced them when I remembered I was driving. "That's exactly why you should come to the party! Have a beer or two and forget all about it."

"I don't know, two nights in a row with you? Not sure I can handle that."

I gave her a small smile and dropped the subject. If she didn't want to go to the party, I wouldn't make her.

XXXX

By the time I got to the party – a good hour after it started – the music could already be heard from a block away. That was my kind of party.

The moment I walked through the door, a couple blond sophomores ran up to me, giggling and grabbing onto my arms. I gently tugged away from them and made my way over to where the alcohol was. "I remember my first beer," I muttered to myself.

With a cup full of beer, I strolled into the living room, looking around for someone to talk to. "Excuse me," someone giggled and tapped my shoulder. I turned around to face a pretty brunette. "Are you Jace?" she asked.

I leaned in closer to her so I didn't have to yell. "The one and only. And you are?"

She giggled again. It was kind of a cute sound. "I'm Sharon."

I winked at her. "Pleasure to meet you, Sharon." I quickly downed the rest of my cup. "I'm going to get another drink. Do you want one?"

She giggled again and nodded. Ugh, okay. It was a cute sound. Now it was getting a bit annoying. But another beer would fix that.

Twenty minutes later, we were sitting outside where it was quieter. I was on my fourth beer, but Sharon was still on her first. I had figured out that she was a senior who had just moved here. After that I had stopped listening. She was sitting on my lap and still giggling. It was getting really annoying now, so I pressed my lips to hers and cut her off.

She responded eagerly, pressing her body closer to mine. She tasted like beer mixed with cherry lip gloss. Believe me, it was not a good combination.

I put one hand on her hip and knotted the other in her hair. Her hair was straight and tamed. Pretty much the complete opposite of Clary's hair. Damn, I needed another beer. Or six. I tugged Sharon closer.

In response, Sharon bit my lower lip.

I wondered what Clary was doing. I hoped she had fun shopping with Magnus and Izzy. She deserved a relaxing night after all the crap Jonathan's homecoming is bringing her.

Sharon pulled away and looked at me. "Um, are you okay? You seem kind of…distracted."

Instead of answering, I just pulled her to me again. What was wrong with me? Normally, I couldn't wait to lose myself in some girl on Friday nights. But now…I don't know. Something just felt off.

I shoved Sharon away from me, none too gently.

"Jace!" she exclaimed, stumbling off my lap.

I ran my hands through my messy hair. "I-I got to go. I'm sorry," I muttered as I ran out the door. I wasn't really drunk, but I had gotten a ride here from someone on the football team, so I couldn't drive home anyway. I sat on the curb about a block away from Ragnor's house. I pulled out my phone and dialed Alec's number. My hands were shaking.

Alec picked up on the fourth ring, sounding tired. "Hello?" he mumbled.

"Hey, did I wake you up?" I asked.

"Um, yeah. Kind of." He sounded a little pissed as well.

"I'm sorry. Can you come get me? Or send someone to come get me?"

Alec suddenly sounded much more awake. "Are you okay? Your curfews not for another like, hour."

I ran a hand through my hair again. "I'm fine. Just come get me at Ragnor's please?" I hung up before he could even respond. I just wanted to go home and get to bed so tomorrow could come.

XXXX

I slept even less than usual last night. After Alec came and picked me up, I went straight to bed, ignoring his questions and demands to know what happened. I spent the whole night tossing and turning. At about five in the morning, I had had enough, so I got up to get an early start to the day.

Normally on Saturdays, I didn't go over to Clary's until mid-afternoon or dinner time, but I was impatient today. By nine o'clock, I was knocking on her door.

Jocelyn answered the door, looking startled when she saw me. "Jace?" she questioned. "You're earlier than normal."

I rubbed the back of my neck uncomfortably. "Uh…yeah. Sorry. I can come back later if it's a bad time."

Jocelyn shooed me in. "Nonsense! It's never a bad time for you, honey. Clary is in the shower, Luke's at the bookstore, and Jon's asleep. Can I get you any breakfast?"

I shook my head and took a seat at the breakfast bar in their kitchen. "No thank you."

Jocelyn gave me a hard look. "Not even a cup of coffee? You look like you didn't sleep a wink."

I grinned sheepishly. "A cup of coffee would be nice…"

She gave me knowing look and poured me a cup with one spoon of sugar. Just how I liked it. "Late night last night?"

I shrugged and took the cup from her. "Thank you. No, not really. I was home by like, eleven, eleven thirty."

She leaned against the counter and blew on her own mug of coffee. "So you were drinking then?"

Had Robert or Maryse asked that question, I would've lied and denied, but I couldn't lie to Jocelyn. "A little, but I wasn't drunk or anything."

She cocked her head a bit. "Then how come you didn't sleep, honey?"

I opened my mouth to answer, but was interrupted by, "Jace?"

I turned around in the chair. "Hey, Clary."

She was drying her hair with a towel and looked skeptical. "What are you doing here? I didn't even think you would be up yet."

I fake pouted. "What? Maybe I just missed my BFF."

Clary gave me a wide-eyed, serious look. "Please never say 'BFF' again. It makes you sound like a twelve year old girl." With that, she walked off down the hall, back to her bedroom.

I smiled at Jocelyn and said, "Thanks for the coffee."

She merely smiled in return.

I followed after Clary – with my still untouched coffee. "What are you really doing here?" she asked without looking at me.

I plopped down on her bed. "You know the drill: Fridays are for parties and whatever else, but Saturdays are Clary days."

She just looked at me.

I sighed. "Fine. I couldn't sleep and I was restless."

Clary sat at her vanity and brushed her hair. "What? Did you party too hard last night?"

I rolled my eyes and laid back. "No. I left the party at like, eleven."

I felt the bed dip beside me as she sat down. "Why?" She reached out and gently brushed my hair out of my face.

I swallowed. "Wasn't feeling it."

She continued to stare at me, totally not buying it, but let it go. "So, what do you want to do today?"

I shrugged. "Up to you, gorgeous."

Clary blushed and finally looked away. It was too easy to get to her. "Um, how about we stay inside and watch Disney movies all day?"

I grinned. "Perfect."

XXXX

"Well," Jocelyn said, "Luke, I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted. Ready to go to bed?"

Luke stood. "Sure am. The store was crazy. Goodnight kids."

We all called our goodnights in return. Once the door to their bedroom closed, Clary turned to me. "Want to go play cards before bed?"

"Sure," I replied, standing.

We started walking towards Clary's room, but Jonathan grabbed my arm and spun me around. "Woah, hold up. You two are going to sleep in the same room?"

Clary looked at him like he was dense. "Um, yeah. Just like we have since we were kids."

Jonathan threw his hands up. "I thought you stopped sleeping in the same room years ago! You guys are teenagers now! You can't sleep in the same bedroom!"

Clary took a step forward and crossed her arms over her chest. "Mom and Luke have no problem with it, why do you?"

Jonathan glared at her. "Because you're my baby sister and I'm not going to let some creep sleep in the same bed as you."

Clary was fuming. "Okay, first of all, we don't sleep in the same bed." That was kind of a lie, but I wasn't about to say anything. "Second, I may be your younger sister, but I am not a baby. And third, Jace is not a creep. I've known him since kindergarten!"

I turned to Clary. I didn't like Jonathan, but I didn't want her fighting with her brother because of me. "Clary, let me handle this, okay? I'll be right in."

She looked between us, her eyes squinted. Eventually she nodded and stormed off into her room.

I turned back to Jonathan. "Look, man, I get that you're just trying to protect your little sister, but-"

Jonathan cut me off by shoving me in the shoulders. Hard.

I stumbled back and put my hands up. "What the hell, man?! I don't want to fight you!"

Jonathan stepped closer to me and crossed his arms menacingly. "I'm not stupid, you know."

What was going on?! "I never called you stupid," I said slowly.

Jonathan scoffed. "You may have Clary and my parents fooled, but not me. You act like you and Clary are just good friends, but I've seen how you look at her."

I blinked. "I promise you, I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh, don't give me that crap! I hear you flirt with her, see you check her out. You just want to get in her pants."

I was seeing red, and I wanted nothing more than to punch Jon in the face right then. "I don't know what you're talking about," I repeated, saying each word carefully. "It is not like that between Clary and I. I promise you, I would never hurt her."

Jonathan looked me over. "Fine. Go sleep in the same room with her tonight, but so help me, if I find out that you tried anything-"

"I won't."

I started to walk away, but Jonathan's voice stopped me. "Maybe you don't want to get in her pants, but you like her. Maybe you don't even realize it, but I do. So I've got my eye on you, Herondale."

I kept walking without turning around. What was he talking about? I liked Clary? I mean, she was beautiful, and smart, and sweet, and hilarious. But…did I like her?

I opened her door and saw her sitting cross legged on her bed, a deck of cards in front of her. She looked up at me and smiled when I walked in. "How did it go?" she asked.

I swallowed and sat across from her on the bed. "Fine," I lied.

Holy shit. Maybe I did like Clary.
