Chapter 30: The World Can Not be Changed by Pretty Words Alone

The next day, which happened to be a Monday, Cris was woken up by her alarm clock. Dammit! She cursed whacking the clock off but only finding it impossible to go back to sleep. She grunted and got up grabbing her crutches.

About five minutes later she finally got down the stairs and went in search for breakfast. She walked in the kitchen finding her mum eating fruit at the breakfast bar. As soon as she walked in her mum nearly chocked on her apple and said, after dislodging the bit of apple from the throat, "Why are you up so early, honey?"

Cris just muttered a few words that were barely audible like 'stupid alarm' and 'stupid sleep' and poured herself some coffee. She was definitely not a morning person and the fact that the alarm clock woke her up early only made it worse.

After Cris nearly downed most of her coffee, she asked, "Why aren't you at work?" Only then realising it was a stupid question but she still answered, "They gave me today off to look after you,"

"Only today?" Cris asked to which her mother replied, "Yeah, they need me back for tomorrow, I just don't know what to do with you,"

"Can't I stay home alone?" Another stupid question asked by Cris. "No, not with those psychopaths about, no way in hell am I leaving you alone!" Cris sighed and asked "So when do I go back to school and what am I going to do until then?"

"You go back next Monday, oh that reminds me; you need to go see Charlotte this morning," Her mother told her to which Cris became a little too excited. Before Cris could ask the many questions buzzing around in her brain, her mother continued, "To answer some of your questions: yes, you'll have to go to her office at the academy, no, you can't tell you friends who you are yet, that means, yes, try to avoid talking to them," Cris just sighed as she continued:

"You should go straight to her office, no detour, I will drive you to the academy but I am not going to go in there with you, they'll know it's you if I do. Charlotte will know it's you but that was only because it was absolutely necessary to tell her.

"On Sunday I will take you to the hair dressers to take out the colour because you're not allowed it for school, then you can go to school as normal and tell your friends you're you because if nothing advances in the case until Monday you can live normally enough,"

Cris was astonished at how long she could talk without needing to breathing, as she finally paused then continued:

"I have got some where for you to go tomorrow but you'll find that out tomorrow, now go get changed quickly,"

Cris just stared trying her to absorb the information, when she thought that she'd got every bit that her tired brain could handle, she muttered "Okay," and nearly ran upstairs to get changed.

She told her mum she'd be back shortly as she got out of her black Ferrari (it was actually Cris' even though she couldn't drive) and walked through the school gates. Cris was nervous, there was no denying that as she walked down the path to the main building, which separated the courts from the fields. Unluckily for her, that means she would have to pass the gazebo that her friends always sat at and the courts which was where most of the boys, except Simon, would be.

She had worn a mid-thigh length skirt (since she could wear any outdoor trousers because of the cast) and a tank top, since it happened to be boiling outside, which was extremely weird for England. The sun beat down on her making her slightly annoyed although she was happy that she didn't have to wear full uniform.

As she tried to walk past unnoticed, her eyes trained in the main entrance, she heard someone yell "Annie!" She immediately looked the person who shouted it and wished she didn't but it was instinct. Luckily, it was just Finnick Odair shouting to his girlfriend, who was called Annie.

She let out a breathe she didn't know she was holding and carried on. She was so thankful that she hadn't been noticed but that was too early because someone bumped into her side making her crash to the ground.

Extreme pain coursed through her as her side hit the grass and someone landed directly on top of her. Breathe escaped her lungs as she tried to hide the pain that was firing up her nerves. She looked up at the person she was no doubt going to kill, when she froze.

Jamie was lying on top of her (more like crushing her) He was staring at her and she knew that he recognised her. There was now a crowd surrounding them as her face paled as she shouted "Get off," In the best American voice she could pull off. Jamie just stayed there, staring at her as if he was seeing a ghost. "Jamie, get off!" Someone shouted behind them but Cris was unable to see as Jamie was blocking most of her view, though there was no doubt that she knew the voice's owner.

When Jamie still didn't move, someone pulled Jamie by the back of his blazer. Cris sat up and winced slightly, there was now a huge crowd around her, which made her insanely worried. Cris blinked a few times before looking up only to see all her friends standing in front of her.

They were all staring down at her with surprise and sadness. She swallowed as there stares bore into her, making her feel minuscule. Then someone lifted her up from behind, setting her back on her foot. This broke the trance she was in as she turned to face Jace and Will who stared at her like the others did.

They must not have looked at me while picking me up, she thought as she took the crutches off a dazed Will. She thanked them, just managing to keep the accent and she slid her arms inside the crutches before walking through the crowd who parted immediately.

A soon as she got out of the crowd, the whispers started: who is she? Is she new? She really looks like Isabelle Lightwood! Is that Cris Jones? I thought she was in a coma! Why were they all staring at her? How come she can get all the guys to look at her like she's an angel, she's been here literally ten seconds? Is she another Lightwood, like Isabelle's twin or something? Why wasn't she wearing uniform?

And as if this trip couldn't get worse, she only noticed when she heard someone say "Hey, your arms bleeding!" Cris cursed as she looked down at her right arm which had a trickle of blood running down it. The boy who said that, ran up to her and said "Are you alright, you should go to the nurse,"

She looked at him, she couldn't say she recognised him, "No it's fine, it's only small, it will heal soon," She said looking at him with a smile and then continued walking. "But what about the blood?" He asked again. She sighed at his persistence and she looked down at her arm again and noticed the small amount of blood dripping from her arm to the ground.

"Its fine," Cris said again and kept on walking, this time he just stayed there standing, watching her walk away. Oh my fuck, how could this get any worse? She thought once again in haste.

"Cris!" Someone shouted running up to her. She resisted the urge to see who had called her. She just kept on walking knowing full well everyone was looking at her. Then Jace and Will stepped in front of her blocking her path.

She looked up at them, "Do you mind?" She said gesturing to the fact they were blocking the entire path. "Cris?" Will asked sounding a little desperate. Cris felt a spike of pain got through her as she said, "I'm sorry, I don't know who that is. Now can you move, I have somewhere to be?"

Of course they didn't move a muscle. After a few seconds of them staring intensely at her, Jace asked "Pray tell?"

"That is of none of your concern, now move!" She almost shouted, getting a little angry. They still didn't move but that was probably now due to shock. Will recovered quickly and looked down at her, "But everything to do with our sister, is of our concern,"

Cris tried hard to keep the stony expression as her heart pounded against her chest. "Then go find who ever she may be, because that's killing two idiots with one stone"

Someone came running up to them then, "Look, just let her past," Jem said standing next to Cris. She looked up at him, the sunlight was reflecting off his hair sending streams of sliver light cascading on to her. She looked away quickly as Will hissed, "Jem!"

"Will" Jem defended, "It's not her!" Will and Jace looked hurt now, it made it so hard not to just blurt out that it actually was her that she had to bite her tongue to keep her quiet. "James, you don't understand!" Something cut Will short and Cris guessed that Jem's face showed something of it but she didn't dare look.

Jace and Will both stepped aside immediately and Cris walked through them, like she was walking into Buckingham Palace. She stopped then and faced Jem, she wished she hadn't because his face showed hurt on the most painful accounts. She swallowed, for what seemed like the hundredth time, and forced a smile on her face.

"Thanks for that," She said before she turned back around and continued walking. Her side was almost tingly with electricity, she turned to see what it was to find Jem walking by her side. "I'm so sorry," he said, his voice so sweet it was practically sugar coated.

"It's fine," She said simply but he was quick to say, "No, it wasn't; look they're just having a really hard time at the moment," Another spike went through her chest, "It's fine" she said sounding a little pained.

"Sorry, you just look like a friend of theirs and she's been in a coma for over a month now," Jem explained and Cris really wished he hadn't. "I'm sorry about that, it probably didn't help that I was so rude to them,"

Jem looked at her curiously as he said "Don't apologise, you couldn't have known, wait, where are you going?" He asked as she forced a smile.

"To the Headmistress' office," she answered simply.

"How do you know where that is?" Jem asked he had this weird expression on her face that made her smile. She was about to lie when a sharp pain went through the side of her head and she toppled to the ground.

Unlike before someone caught her just before she hit the floor. She looked up to see Jem holding her and just staring, he seemed mesmerised and this freaked Cris out. This was so unlike Jem and his gaze caused her to shiver.

"Um," Cris muttered and Jem seemed to snap out of his trance and set her on her feet quickly. He looked down at the floor so she could not read his expression. Then she did something that surprised and even vaguely shocked Jem: she smiled.

She smiled as she looked down at the rugby ball lying on the grass, then at the group of boys that had thrown it; some looked shocked and vaguely apologetic while others looked amused. She bent down and picked up the ball and walked to the group who she recognised as some of the top rugby players in the nation.

As she got to the group, who towered over her as if that would be intimidating to Cris, who was quite tall as it was. She stopped in front of the group who were all staring at her expectantly.

She just smiled sweetly and asked in the sweetest, most innocent American accent she could muster, "Is this your ball?" She said stretching out her arm as if to give the ball to the group. "It's mine!" One of them said as he went to get the ball but Cris retracted her hand just in time so that his hand just brushed the ball.

Cris was now very aware of the crowd that once again formed around her and the boys. "So were you the one who threw it?" She said once again in a sickeningly sweet tone. The boy stuttered a "No" and someone stepped from behind him. Sebastian Morgenstern stepped in front of her and said "It was me, what do you intend to do about it?"

He was now looking down at her as he tried to put on a menacing face. She gave a small giggle and said, "Oh, I have a few ideas," Her seductive voice ran through the air as he smiled maliciously.

She rested all her weight on to the crutches, so that neither of her legs needed to touch the floor as he said, leaning further in, "Care to tell me?"

Cris smiled sweetly and adjusted her positioned her hands better on the handles of her crutches, "I'd like to show you better," At his he smirked and she smiled as she lifted her good leg up and kicked him right where it hurts.

He fell to the ground before her clutching his crotch and she could tell he was trying not to scream in pain. Silence fell around the crowd after their collective gasps. She dropped the ball next to him and said "You throw like a decrepit old lady!"

He simply looked up at her, as she maintained her sweet smile, with cold hatred and pain. She winked at him the walked back out of the circle and into the main building. Once she had got to the steps, she heard a strangled scream in the form of "Bitch!"

She turned to Sebastian and simply said "Zero," Cris made her way up the steps before he replied, "What?"

She turned again and smiled, "That's how many fucks I give!"
