Chapter 31: I was confident that I had the ability to see through other people's facades but that they could never see through mine…

As Cris walked down the long and insanely tedious school corridors, the thought she would never tell anyone, she missed. She wasn't even thinking about how to get to the office and she didn't really know how she kept walking but she did.

Luckily, and strangely, the corridors were completely empty, there was no one to be seen throughout her path and that unnerved her slightly. She didn't understand why no one was inside because normally, from what she could remember, the corridors were swarming with students at this time.

But that thought was quickly out lived as she thought about what had just transpired. It hurt her to see the looks on their faces: looks of shock, hurt and unbelieving all had plastered on their faces with no attempt to hide it. Their intense glares had made her want to come clean immediately but Cris knew better than that.

She had to act as if she didn't know them. She had to act as if she didn't care. She had to act to keep her and them safe. And she hated it.

She hated how things were like this. She hated how she had to change her hair and eye colour, to be even slightly safe. She hated how she had to lie to the people she loved most.

By this time she was pretty sure tears were streaming down her face but, at that moment, she didn't care. Wet streaks adorned her face as she thought about how, she knew, they knew it was her. She was sure they knew but it was all thanks to Jem that she managed to make it through without, well, she didn't know what would've happened if they found out but it wouldn't have been good.

Jem saved her and convinced the others it wasn't her but Cris could see it in his eyes that even he wasn't entirely sure either. It pained her that he helped her not even knowing it was her and it pained her to see that spark in his eyes that told her he cared even though he had only just met the new her. Although it brought her pain, it also brought her joy. It made her happy, beyond belief, to see that sweet smile he always held, to feel that calm aura that followed him everywhere.

She sighed, blinking which caused fresh tears to streak her face. It hurt her though. It hurt thinking of one of the last times she saw Jem. That kiss, that was so sweet and tender but also held passion and longing. She was so confused and embarrassed after that, that she had to leave in fear she'd do something she'd regret, when in the end she did regret leaving him alone, in that corridor. Although she did regret it and it did hurt her to do so, she couldn't help but wonder if that was the best thing she could've done. If he had waited for her to come out of the office, he would've taken her back and that guy could've have killed him.

That was something she wouldn't allow. She couldn't have let anyone die for her then and she wouldn't now. But remembering that day, the last day she could remember, made her confused. She felt as if something happened after that that she should remember, that was important but as hard as she tried she couldn't figure out. It annoyed her insanely, that she couldn't remember something as important as she seemed to think it was but, once again, there was nothing she could do.

Suddenly, her thought track comes to a halt when she hears soft footfalls behind her. She turns to look but the corridor is just as empty as it was before. As she looks back the footsteps stop, immediately. Fear rises up inside her as she tries to calm her soaring heart rate by taking deep, slow breathes.

She sighs, thinking it's only imaginary, as she turns back around to keep walking down the corridor. Cris doesn't hear anything more until she turns into the last corridor that contains Charlotte's office, when the footsteps start again. It's not him! She thinks to herself hoping but not believing she was right.

After what feels like forever, she finally reaches the door and with a trembling hand she knocks on it, rather too frantically. Although the footsteps have now stopped, there was no doubt whoever was following was now watching her. She is still breathing heavily when the door is flung open to reveal Mr Michaelis, or as Cris knew him: Sebastian.

Cris had known Sebastian since she was a kid and they'd always been close even though she still didn't know how they knew each other so well, but Cris had an inkling it had something to do with her mother. Cris also knew that Sebastian was close to practically no one, there were only a few people that knew the real him; Cris being one of them.

So when he opened the door, there was no doubt on her mind that he would know who she was, he always seemed to know everything. He looked down at her, shock written all over his face. A pang of guilt went through her and she was about to say something when he smiled.

This was even stranger than the shock his face, earlier, held, mainly because Sebastian so rarely showed any emotion at school. Occasionally there would be a closed-eyed smile which meant whoever did wrong should run for their life. Before she could do anything else he pulled her into a bone-crushing hug.

She groaned, knowing this would happen even though it was an extremely rare sentiment. Though he was crushing nearly every bone that hadn't already been broken, she returned the hug as he leant down to whisper to her, "Cris don't do that to us again!"

Cris wasn't surprised at all but was a bit weary in case the people who were following were listening. The way he said this sounded like an order that for once she would be happy to follow through with.

"Sebastian, you're crushing me," She manages to get out even though it was becoming seriously hard to breathe. She could feel him smirk as he refused to let him go. She sighed, knowing that if she tried to push him, it would not only fail but Cris would become even more crushed.

Cris paused then, smirking back, which, she could tell, made Mr Michaelis anxious, before saying in the best imitation she could muster while being crushed, "Bassy, my love!"

This had an immediate effect as he let her go and backed up with incredible speed. Her impression was of another teacher called, Mr Sutcliff though liked to be referred as Miss Sutcliff, who, let's say, had a tiny crush on Mr Michaelis. When I say 'tiny crush' I mean completely in love and overly obsessed, to the fact that whenever Miss Sutcliff (whose first name is Grell, Cris only knew that because Grell would randomly turn up at Sebastian's house and sometimes Cris was there and had to witness the ugly rejection that would cause nothing to change) would see Sebastian (s)he would run up to Sebastian, with immense speed, and try to smother him with hugs and kisses. It was a very sickening sight that Cris never wanted to witness again but had been subjected to it many times.

"That was overly cruel," Sebastian said scowling, although Cris couldn't help but notice he was trying to suppress a smile. He stepped aside to let her in the office and as she did she said, "But you deserved it,"

Cris noticed that Charlotte actually wasn't in her office, hmm strange, she must be out somewhere. She thought sitting on one of the leather couches and flinging her crutches on the floor. Sebastian mock scowled as he noticed this and went to prop her crutches up on the wall.

Cris' mind was brought back to the people following her as Sebastian said, sitting on the adjacent couch, "Charlotte, had to go out for a minute to sort out someone," At that he looked to inquisitively as if he knew it had something to do with her.

"And I must say, congratulations, it must have been quite the effort to kick someone like that with a broken leg," She managed to crack a smile at this, whenever she had hurt someone at school, which happened more than Cris would've liked to admit, Mr Michaelis never scolded her for it, just either told her ways to either get away with it or to hurt the person more next time.

This was one of the reasons he was one of her favourite teachers and also because his favouritism towards her often clouded his judgment when she was in his class. Luckily, she had Mr Michaelis for fighting, or as the school called it 'self-defence', and even though he always wore a suit it never restricted his ability to win a fight within seconds. This meant, she got away with hurting some people more than the rules allowed but when fighting Will or Jace, they often deserved it.

Sebastian noticed that, even though she was smiling, she looked a bit worried, so suddenly getting serious he said, "Are you thinking about the people who were following you into here?" She sighed and nodded muttering, "Know it all,"

Sebastian then got up and with a small smirk he opened the door. He was only gone a few seconds and when he came back, he was ushering a group of boys and one girl into the office. Cris sighed in relief, that it wasn't him but she did tense but a bit looking at Simon, Jace, Will and Izzy.

Cris crossed her broken leg over the other and leaned back on the couch, rolling her eyes. They all just looked at her again with shock. The four were standing in front of Sebastian who looked deadly. "There were more but they got away, would you like me to get them for you?" Sebastian asked and Cris knew that Sebastian willingly let some of them go, mainly because it was probably a hassle trying to get them all to go in one direction.

"Its fine," Cris said with a voice of authority, she had gone back to her American accent which still sounded strange to her. As she said this she looked over at the group who were looking in surprise between her and the teacher behind them. They were probably shocked that Sebastian asked her what to do as he doesn't seem like the type of teacher who asks a pupil what he should do.

"So, why were you spying on her?" Sebastian asked, walking over to stand in front of them. Sebastian was looking murderous but, of course, Will still questioned, "We don't even know who 'her' is?"

Will and Jace were now glaring at Mr Michaelis, Izzy had her hand on her hip, impatient and Simon had gone extremely pale like he was going to pass out.

"Her name is Crystal Owens, not that it is any of your business," Cris said coldly, glancing up at the group who were looking at her strangely, with an emotion Cris couldn't quite understand.

Cris sounded slightly bored as she continued, "I heard many rumours about the people in this school. Maybe I should've been warned the pupils are stalkers although I thought rich bastards like you got other people to do their dirty work for them,"

She turned away to look at Sebastian, who warned, "Crystal," She knew this was just for her language, so she shrugged as Jace said seductively, with a wink, "Not all of the dirty work"

To which Will continued "Why let them have all the fun?" Their voices sounded like silk as they tried to be teasing and sexy, to which Cris laughed coldly. In Cris' peripheral vision she could see Izzy glaring at the two boys but at Cris' reaction she turned to her in astonishment.

Cris fought hard not to grimace at her brothers trying to flirt with her but she just kept it together. Before she could retort back, Sebastian snapped, "Mr Herondale's I would advise you shut up before you get in real trouble," At his murderous and dark aura, they actually shut up.

"Sir, we should really go before class starts," Izzy tells Sebastian in a cute and playful voice, which Cris knew she reserved for when she wanted something. Sebastian's aura didn't change one bit, which was unusual because he normally liked the game. As Cris realised that Izzy did too which led her to open her mouth in shock.

Cris turned to look at the group, in particular, Simon who was staring at her almost in awe. Cris smiled sweetly at the look on his face and gave him a not-so innocent wink. She saw as his face immediately heated up so it burned red and his eyes turned wide. She gave a small playful giggle at his reaction which seemed to only make his blush worse.

Izzy, noticing Simon's expression, scoffed and sent a glare towards Cris to which just she gave a short laugh. At that it seemed Jace and Will had finally stopped arguing with Sebastian and Izzy turned on Cris and said, "Cris, why are you doing this?" Her voice was soft and full of pain which made Cris turn away, so she didn't see the expression on her face as she said it because if Cris did, she knew she would cave and she couldn't do that.

"I told you, I don't know who that is!" Cris snaps still looking away from them. She hears footsteps coming towards her as she feels pricks at the backs of her eyes. Why do they have to be so damn stubborn?! She thinks, trying to stop the tears following down her face.

"Then, why don't you say that to our faces?" Will whispers and she turns her head to see Jace and Will kneeling before her, their faces clearly show the emotions that they normally try so hard to hide. She bows her head and lets her hair pool around her to create a barrier between them and so they also can't see the tears streaming down her face.

She feels the couch dip to her right and someone carefully sweeps her hair behind her ear. She takes a deep breath and looks at the person sitting beside her, only to see Simon staring back, his hand lingering behind her ear. As he notices her looking at him, he quickly retracts his hand and she notices the small blush that forms on his face.

She gives a small smile but it doesn't stop the water from flowing down her cheeks. She then turns her head to face the Herondale's. She leans in so that her face is in between them and she whispers, "I don't know who that is,"

Jace and Will fall back at this and before anything else could happen, Cris says, looking up at Sebastian who has been stoic the whole time, "Sebastian, you know what to do," Her cold and authoritative voice send chills throughout the room and shocks the four people in front of her.

Sebastian smirks, putting a hand over his heart and bending down to kneel on the ground and says, "Of course, my Lady," The four are so shocked they can't move and only snap out of the trance when Sebastian claps his hands and opens the door, gesturing for them to leave.

"Now, I don't want to hear of any of you harassing her again, you've, already, earned yourself an after school detention, would you like to have a whole week's worth because that can be arranged?" He says with a smirk as they all mutter no and don't bother arguing because they know Mr Michaelis wasn't in the mood for it; when he smirked everyone knew you were screwed.

Cris looked up to see them leave, Simon was the last one to leave and she noticed him giving her a lingered look before he sighed and shut the door behind him. When they left Sebastian sighed and walked over to Cris. She looked up at him as he sat beside her.

"Are you alright?" He asked his voice soft and comforting, she just shook her head and, once again, the tear fell down. She felt Sebastian envelope her in a hug which she instantly returned. She buried her head in her shoulder as she silently cried, he just held her. Surprisingly, to everyone whoever met him, Sebastian Michaelis actually has a heart but he only acknowledged it when he wanted to, which was rare indeed.

After about a minute of Cris just crying into him, the door opened. She only felt Mr Michaelis turn his head slightly but she still didn't move or even acknowledge the person that entered. She heard the person kneel down beside her and the person said softly, "Crisiant,"

Cris, immediately, looked up to find Charlotte's soft brown eyes looking down at her. Cris let go of Sebastian and brought, or crushed, Charlotte in to a hug. Charlotte quickly regained her balance and hugged Cris tightly. "Charlotte, I've missed you," Cris said into Charlotte's hair as she continued to cry on Charlotte.

"Cris, don't ever do that again. By the Angel, you almost killed us," Charlotte cried finally releasing Cris who could see the tears running down Mrs Branwell's face, through her own blurry ones. They both quickly wiped the tears from their eyes as Charlotte said, her voice still a bit hoarse, "I prefer you a brunette, though," Cris laughed and agreed with her.

Charlotte put her hands on Cris' shoulder and said, with a small smile, "As much as I would like to do this, we have work to get on with," Just, at that moment, the bell went and Sebastian excused himself as he had to attend to his form.
