"Auntie, what is it? Has something happened to Emily?" Maya worries.
"She's gone."
"She's what?" Maya asks not understanding what she means by "gone".
"Her mom came to surprise her. When Emily saw her she broke down in tears and begged her mother to take her home."
A tear rolls down Maya's face, "what are you saying?"
"I'm sorry Maya. I'm so sorry," she embraces Maya holding her as her body shakes against her.
Maya tries desperately to compose herself, "I don't believe it! She wouldn't just up and leave!"
"Maya," Auntie Marin tries desperately to quiet her down so she will focus on her words. "She's gone. Emily is gone…"
Chapter 28: Can Love Conquer All?
Emily lays awake on one of the queen size beds at the hotel she and her mom are staying at in San Diego. Her mom is fast asleep. Emily's eyes are red and her cheeks are stained with tears not because of Chelsea but because she left the love of her life without a word. She knows Maya is right, that her relationship with Chelsea shouldn't matter but it doesn't change the fact that she kept it from her and why would she do that? Is their relationship really in the past? Is that why Maya didn't feel the need to bring it up? Or is there a reason she didn't want her to know about their past together? All of these questions cloud Emily's brain into exhaustion until she finally falls asleep…
I lie on the bed wearing pale pink drawstring pajama pants with a white tank top; my body is covered by a white duvet, when I hear the sound of footsteps enter the room. I open my eyes looking at the figure standing at the end of my bed wearing a men's light blue button down shirt opened to reveal a black bra and black panties.
"You shouldn't be here," I say not too convincingly.
"Tell me to leave. Tell me you don't want to see me."
She pulls the duvet towards her uncovering my body.
"Tell me that you don't want me to see you," she demands with a seductive purr.
She leans towards me sliding her hand up my outer thigh caressing up to my pajama top lifting it to expose my shivering belly. She climbs over me kissing below my navel, her full soft lips skimming my warm caramel skin up to the hem of my shirt. She kisses over the soft cotton fabric stopping her kisses between my breasts looking up at me. She gets up kneeling over me reaching for my hands bringing them above my head.
"All you have to do is tell me no," she rasps knowing I won't refuse her.
I free my wrists from her grasp cupping her face, kissing the side of her mouth with my plush pouty lips allowing her hand to glide under the drawstring waist of my pajama bottoms massaging my moistness. She lowers her body over me kissing my neck sending waves of euphoria throughout my body affecting my breathing from shallow to heavy, my chest rising and falling rapidly…
"I can't remember the last night I didn't sleep next to you," I admit.
"Baby, it was last night and the night before that and the night before that…"
"Stop."
"I don't think you want me to, now do you?" she traces small circles over my belly.
"No, no I don't," I place my hand over hers stopping the circles needing her hand elsewhere.
"Then prove it," she narrows her gaze.
"I will it's in my nature," I pounce on her beautiful glistening body pinning her under me…
The sun from the drapes being opened glares down on Emily who squints at the person standing near the window. It's Emily's mom! She checks her bed to make sure she's alone and checks her body making sure its clothed letting out a breath when she realizes she just woke from a dream.
"Honey, are you okay."
"Yeah mom. I'm fine. I guess I forgot where I was."
"Em, are you sure you can't work this out with Maya, whatever this is?"
Emily sits up leaning against her pillows, "I don't know mom. I just had to get out of there."
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
"I do. We both made mistakes along the way but I know what's in my heart."
"Maya?"
"Yeah, Maya…"
Back at Auntie Maren's…
Maya gets up from the couch having cried herself to sleep upon hearing the news of Emily leaving for good. Auntie Maren approaches her with her hands over her heart not really knowing what to say to her so she says nothing. She sits next to Maya who looks at her Auntie, her love pouring out to her, tears flow freely as she springs up to embrace her.
"Oh Auntie," she shakes.
"I'm here Maya," she gently caresses her back trying to calm her.
"I screwed up," she tears.
"Everyone screws up Maya but it's no reason to give up."
Maya pulls away leaning against the pillows supported by the arm of the couch, "What do you mean?"
Auntie Maren holds Maya's hands between hers, "Maya, you and Emily love each other anyone with half a brain can see that. The question is do you love her enough to fight for her?"
She slips her hands away to wipe the tears from her face, "You know I do."
"Then lying here feeling sorry for yourself isn't going to get her back."
"I don't even know where she is. She could be halfway back to Rosewood by now or already there."
"Her mom just got here so I'm not so sure they left yet," she rationalizes.
Maya sits up straight, life infused in her body again, "Do you think we can find them before it's too late?"
"Not exactly."
Maya leaps from the couch, "What do you mean?"
"I know a lot of the hotel managers in the area. They send their guests to my restaurant all the time. I'll make some calls and see if I can find out if they're still here."
"You would do that for me?" Maya's lip quivers.
Auntie Maren stands up, "I can't bear to see you like this. Why don't you get showered and dressed. By that time, maybe I'll have found something out."
Maya hugs her auntie with a renewed sense of hope. She's determined to fix this, whatever it takes. She bounds up the stairs to her room picking out something irresistible to wear before she jumps in the shower.
"I love you Emily and I'm going to make this right."
At the Hotel…
Emily and her mom are showered and packed. They have some time before check out so Mrs. Fields decides to ask some questions.
She sits up against the headboard of the bed reaching for her daughter who rests her head on her mom's shoulder, "Emily, I don't know what happened between you two but I want to help."
Emily sits up pulling her knees to her chest, "Maya didn't tell me about this girl she used to date while she was in California."
"Okay, but why is that so important?" Mrs. Fields wonders.
"That girl was flirting with me at the restaurant and Maya got mad about it. I don't know if she was mad at me for not stopping it or if she was jealous that this girl was flirting with me instead of her."
"Does this girl have a name?"
"Sorry, yeah, Chelsea."
"Okay so Chelsea and Maya used to date but Chelsea was flirting with you and you think Maya was jealous that Chelsea was giving you attention and not her."
"Yes."
"And this is why you're upset?"
"Chelsea wasn't trying to get with me; she was trying to get Maya to notice her. Chelsea told me that they would spend their summers together and Maya said nothing."
"Emily, do you really want to know about everyone Maya was with before you?" her mom questions knowing what her answer would be.
"That's not the point," Emily gets defensive.
"Then what is?"
"We aren't supposed to have secrets. We promised," she says with sadness in her voice.
"Emily, I don't think that was a secret. I think it was an experience that helped Maya to grow."
"What do you mean?" she looks at her mom quizzically.
"Maybe if she hadn't been with this girl then she wouldn't be with you right now," she tries making sense of the situation.
"I still don't understand."
"She knew she wasn't in love with Chelsea and that's why it didn't seem so important to bring her up. But with you, she knows its love," she explains rubbing her hand on her back in a nurturing way.
"Why are you on Maya's side?" Emily accuses.
"I'm not, I just know that I don't care to hear about your father's girlfriends before me and he doesn't want to hear about my boyfriends before him. They have nothing to do with our love for each other."
"But you weren't working alongside his ex," Emily keeps looking for excuses.
"Emily, it happened. I'm sure if Maya could turn back time she would've told you. Maybe she thought telling you would be worse than not telling you. I don't think Maya has an ulterior motive for not telling you. I think she thought she was doing the right thing by not spoiling your time together."
"Do you really think that?" asks Emily genuinely.
"Yeah, I do, and I think you do too otherwise your heart wouldn't be so open to her right now."
"But mom she knows my dating past," she reminds her mom.
"Does she question you about any of them or does she let the past stay in the past?"
"She only questioned me about Paige."
"Well, can you blame her honey? Paige was an exception. Are you going to make Chelsea an exception too or are you going to keep her in Maya's past like Maya tried to do?"
Emily looks at her mom revealing the answer that lies in her heart…
At Auntie Marin's…
Maya descends the staircase in jean shorts, suede moccasin calf length boots and a form fitting camisole with tie up laces exposing a bit of cleavage. Her hair is pin straight and her makeup is simple revealing a freshness and a glow to her toffee skin.
"Maya you look beautiful and you smell amazing. That perfume is so light and refreshing."
"Thanks, Auntie. So, did you find her?" she asks fearing her response.
"Yes."
"Great! Let's go!" she surprises even herself with her excitement.
"Maya, I'm sorry," her auntie looks down at the floor.
"Sorry, why?"
"They already checked out. I'm sure they're already at the airport and even if we were to leave now, we wouldn't make it in time," she looks up with compassionate eyes.
Maya's shoulders slump forward, as she shuffles to the couch. She falls onto the cushions, elbows on her knees sobbing into her open hands.
"This can't be happening," she chokes through her tears.
At the Airport…
"Honey, are you sure this is what you want to do?"
"I'm sure. I can't see her right now. Please let's just go."
Once on the airplane and high in the atmosphere Emily opens her laptop to compose an email to Maya…
Maya,
I know you were only trying to protect me. Just so we're clear, you didn't need to spare my feelings. I took off because I needed to sort myself out. I even talked to my mom about it and I realized that I needed to embrace my destiny. You are my destiny. There's no escaping who I am, the one whose heart is owned by you. We will always be connected. We could never love another. We are bound to each other. Seventeen years old and I already know who I'm going to spend the rest of my life with.
I don't pretend to know what love is but in my version I feel my true heart is love. You are my truth. You are my heart. You are my love.
I need you to know that because right now I can't be with you. I fear there is more you're not telling me and I can't be with you until I become your truth. I hope you will embrace your destiny and I hope your destiny is me. But until you know for sure, I need to say goodbye.
When you are ready to tell me, then I will be ready to listen. I love you Maya, I always will.
Emily
She hits send and closes her laptop leaning her head back staring out into the clouds…
