Once on the airplane and high in the atmosphere Emily opens her laptop to compose an email to Maya…
Maya,
I know you were only trying to protect me. Just so we're clear, you didn't need to spare my feelings. I took off because I needed to sort myself out. I even talked to my mom about it and I realized that I needed to embrace my destiny. You are my destiny. There's no escaping who I am, the one whose heart is owned by you. We will always be connected. We could never love another. We are bound to each other. Seventeen years old and I already know who I'm going to spend the rest of my life with.
I don't pretend to know what love is but in my version I feel my true heart is love. You are my truth. You are my heart. You are my love.
I need you to know that because right now I can't be with you. I fear there is more you're not telling me and I can't be with you until I become your truth. I hope you will embrace your destiny and I hope your destiny is me. But until you know for sure, I need to say goodbye.
When you are ready to tell me, then I will be ready to listen. I love you Maya, I always will.
Emily
She hits send and closes her laptop leaning her head back staring out into the clouds…
Chapter 29: Karma
At Auntie Maren's…
Maya falls asleep on the couch exhausted from crying and thinking over and over, "what if she had done things differently with Emily." But she knows she couldn't because there is something much bigger going on here and she doesn't think she can tell her how deep this thing with Chelsea goes. She becomes restless tossing and turning on the couch until she's awakened by her phone buzzing repeatedly. She springs up quickly grabbing her vibrating cell from the coffee table unlocking the screen to find an unread email. Her heart begins to pound through her chest as she clicks on the message entitled "Maya."
She reads it from start to finish again and again and again tears welling up in her eyes each time. The words resonate within her, "I fear there is more you're not telling me and I can't be with you until I become your truth. I hope you will embrace your destiny and I hope your destiny is me. But until you know for sure, I need to say goodbye. When you are ready to tell me, then I will be ready to listen. I love you Maya, I always will." She's right. There is more. But can she bring herself to tell her…
Auntie Maren sits down next to her giving her a side hug as Maya's head hangs low.
"Can I see?" she asks to read the email.
Maya nods.
When she finishes she says, "Honey, you two love each other like no one I've ever seen in love before. Maya, do you want to make this right?" she asks compassionately.
Maya looks up with red eyes and tear stained cheeks, "Yes, of course I do."
"Then you need to tell her," she kisses her temple.
"But…"
"Maya, you need to tell her, everything. If she loves you as much as she said she does in this email then she'll understand. I'll leave you alone to think about it," she gets up from the couch leaving Maya to compose her thoughts to Emily.
Maya replies to her email…
Emily,
I love you so much that I did want to protect you and I still do. You are my truth and my heart and my love and I'm ready to prove that to you. We need to talk.
You're right, you are my destiny. And that's why I'm ready to tell you everything. I hope you will hear me out and find it in your heart to accept my truth.
I never wanted you or anyone else to know about this but if I want to be your forever then I need to be honest with myself and more importantly I need to be honest with you.
You are the love of my life, a life I plan on spending with you.
Maya.
She hits send on her cell phone and waits nervously for a response. Auntie Maren hangs up the phone in the kitchen and tells Maya there's a problem at the restaurant she needs to tend to.
"Maya will you be okay if I go?" Auntie Maren asks not sure if she should leave Maya alone.
"Yeah. I'll just keep trying to reach her," she smiles softly as Auntie Maren heads out the front door.
On the plane…
Emily put her laptop and phone away so she doesn't know that Maya has sent a response to her email. She cozies up to her mom needing her nurturing love to help her through this. But she has something on her mind...
"Mom?"
"Yeah honey."
"Was I right to leave?" she asks softly.
"Oh Em, you had to do what was right for you at that moment. Why? Are you having second thoughts?" she asks feeling she knows what her daughter is thinking.
She looks up at her mom answering with her eyes.
"Em, why did you get so upset about this Chelsea thing? I don't think you really answered my question before," she tries to make better sense of the situation.
"It wasn't Chelsea. She was just the catalyst. It was that Maya held me to such a high standard of not keeping secrets from her and I was put through a hell I never want to go back to because I hurt her so much. We spent weeks apart because she couldn't forgive me. I had to keep fighting for her. The thing is I didn't mean not to tell her, it's just that it was never the right time," Emily tries to defend her decision for keeping her secret.
"Look Em, I'm not sure what your secret was but it had to be pretty big for her to be so upset," her mom attempts to see things through Maya's point of view.
"Mom, are you saying that I don't have the right to be upset?" she sits back looking at her mom needing her to answer.
"No, not at all. But I do feel like your relationship with her is far too important to let this animosity about who's keeping a secret and who isn't to weigh so much on deciding your future together," she says making a lot of sense to Emily who doesn't want to admit that to her.
"But mom…"
"Emily, do you think that since she kept Chelsea from you that she might be keeping someone else from you too? Someone she was seeing while she was seeing you?" Mrs. Fields asks hoping her daughter doesn't doubt Maya's love for her.
"No. I don't think that at all. She would never do that. What we have is incredible," she can't help but smile.
"Then it's the fact that she kept Chelsea from you, made you look foolish for not having any idea that she was a part of her past and that she holds you to a higher standard with your secret keeping. Did I miss anything?" She asks finding it all so very high school.
"Mom, it's not funny," Emily folds her arms across her chest.
"Em, do you want to know what I really think?" she places her hand on her forearm trying to get her to look at her.
"I guess," she says not so sure if she actually does or not.
"It sounds to me like someone's ego got bruised," her mom says quite bluntly.
"Ego?" Emily reacts with surprise from her mom's assumption.
"Emily, you were blindsided by this information about Maya and Chelsea. You want to give her a taste of her own medicine by holding her accountable for that secret. And your insecurities convinced your mind to wonder what else she might be hiding from you," she tries to show her daughter exactly how her ego got in the way.
"When you say it like that it makes me sound so jealous and petty."
"Well aren't you?" Mrs. Fields questions more so trying to get Emily to search for the answer inside herself.
Emily closes her eyes leaning her head back against the head rest, "Mom, I was blindsided just like you said and I didn't like it. I was and still do feel insecure and I want Maya to feel what she made me feel when she held my secret against me," she sits up turning her body toward her mom. "Oh my god, when I say it out loud I sound so awful. Mom, what have I done?" she falls into the back of her seat.
"You reacted like any teenager would have. Emily, maybe you finding out about Chelsea was the universe's way of telling you that you need some time to mature. Maybe going home, being away from Maya for a little while will help you to really see what's in your heart," her mom puts her arm around her.
"Mom, I know what's in my heart," she says confidently.
"But do you know its worth? Or maybe you need some time to reevaluate its worth," she suggests.
Emily takes a deep breath letting it out slowly.
"I do know its worth," she repeats softly to herself. "She's priceless. She's irreplaceable…"
Just then the intercom sounds with an announcement from the pilot, "We are experiencing some rough pockets of turbulence. Please return to your seats and buckle your seat belts. Please also refrain from using all electronic devices at this time. We will inform you when it is safe to move about the cabin and resume use of your electronic devices. Thank you."
Once the flight attendants make sure everyone has taken heed of the pilot's instructions, they then prepare themselves for the expected turbulence by belting themselves into their seats.
"Mom, I'm gonna call Maya and tell her what we just talked about. Dare I say it; I can't believe I let my ego get in the way. Mom, please believe me when I say we really are mature enough to get through this. We're gonna make it right, you'll see." Emily decides.
"Em, you can call her when the pilot gives the okay. Maya will do whatever she needs to do to work this out with you. I'm sure of it," she squeezes her daughter's hand.
"Whoa, mom, did you feel that," she whispers with a bit of fear in her voice.
"Yes but I have complete faith in our pilots," she gives reassurance to her daughter then closes her eyes praying for their safety.
At Auntie Maren's…
Auntie Maren has left to take care of some things at the restaurant leaving Maya home alone. She doesn't feel good about going but her business needs her too and Maya knows where she is and how to reach her if she has to. She promises Maya she won't be gone long.
Maya lies down on the couch and grabs the remote flipping channels aimlessly. She doesn't even know what she's watching when the local news cuts in…
"We interrupt your current programming to bring you this breaking news report. American Airlines flight 1728 en route to Philadelphia Pennsylvania has crashed."
Maya slowly gets up in complete disbelief as to what she's hearing and seeing.
"We have news crews standing by waiting for information about this horrible crash including whether there are any survivors. We will have updates for you as soon as they are made available to us."
Maya's legs shake, her body heaves.
"Again, a horrible tragedy occurred when American Airlines flight 1728 leaving San Diego en route to Philadelphia crashed earlier today…"
"No! I won't believe this! I won't! No! Emily! No!"
Her emotions overwhelm her as she falls to her knees choking back her sobs. But just as her body begins to go numb her phone vibrates in her pocket.
"Emily!"
She wipes her eyes and hurriedly grabs her cell from her pocket hoping against hope that the text is from Emily but when she reads it her hand covers her mouth in horror…
Emily wasn't supposed to tell you about the text I sent her.
Otherwise your life would be at risk.
Looks like her lie fulfilled her own destiny.
What lie will fulfill yours?
Karma's a bitch and so am I.
-A
Maya throws her phone across the room. Anger and loss and hurt and vengeance fill her body, mind and soul.
"Emily!" she wails…
