"Emily!"
She wipes her eyes and hurriedly grabs her cell from her pocket hoping against hope that the text is from Emily but when she reads it her hand covers her mouth in horror…
Emily wasn't supposed to tell you about the text I sent her.
Otherwise your life would be at risk.
Looks like her lie fulfilled her own destiny.
What lie will fulfill yours?
Karma's a bitch and so am I.

Maya throws her phone across the room. Anger and loss and hurt and vengeance fill her body, mind and soul.
"Emily!" she wails…
Chapter 30: Whose life is lost?
Maya falls to her knees, hands covering her tear flooded eyes, mouth agape expelling shrill cries far enough to reach the depths of the ocean. The love of her life, the one who belongs to her totally and completely, the one she will never hold in her loving arms again, gone forever. How could it end this way? Who would be so cruel? Who will pay for taking the life of the one who owns her heart? All these thoughts wreak havoc with Maya's mind dizzying her until finally she can no longer hold herself up collapsing onto the floor eyes open but body motionless…
Meanwhile…
"Dad!"
"Emmy!"
Emily runs into her father's outstretched arms holding onto him for dear life.
"I'm so glad to see you!"
"Me too Emmy, me too. I miss you so much and you too Pammy, come here."
Pam joins in on the hug fest. Wayne kisses her lovingly on the lips looking at her with the love a husband has only for his wife. He then kisses Emily on the top of her head grateful to have them both with him, a family once again.
"Dad, I'm so glad we came to see you. Mom didn't tell me until we got to the airport. This is the best surprise ever!" Emily expresses excitedly.
"Well, Texas is a lonely place without my two beautiful girls," he schmoozes.
"Wayne, you are such the charmer," Pam smiles at his sweetness. "But I have to say it was a rough flight getting here."
"Oh my god dad, I thought I was gonna rip mom's arm off I was so scared. It's a good thing she was so calm," Emily blurts out.
"Calm on the outside maybe but I was having a mini freak out inside believe me," Pam recalls the harrowing experience.
"It was that bad?" Wayne asks concerned for his girls.
"The turbulence was crazy."
"We got tossed around a bit but as soon as the plane landed on the runway everyone clapped and didn't stop clapping until we came to a complete stop."
"Well, I'm just grateful that you're here and you're safe."
"It was quite the ride but I think we proved how resilient the Fields women really are," Mrs. Fields winks at her daughter and draws her in for a side hug.
"Mom."
"What? Honey, that was…I don't even know what that was."
"So, why don't we get you two to the base so you can relax a little before we go out for dinner," Wayne suggests.
"Dad, do you mind if I talk to Maya first?" Emily hopes.
"Of course not, is everything alright?"
"Not really but I hope to make it right," Emily looks down at the ground then back up at her dad.
"Fair enough, let's go."
At Aunt Maren's…
"Hello? Is anyone home?"
Chelsea knocks on the door and it pushes open. She lets herself in calling out to Maya and then she spots her unmoving on the floor…
"Maya!"
She nudges her shoulder but she doesn't respond. Nothing she says or does incites a reaction from Maya. She can tell that she's breathing, her eyes are open but she's not moving. Chelsea grabs her phone and calls 911, and then calls Maya's aunt…
Chelsea grabs a blanket off the couch covering Maya with it. She gets on her knees to be closer to her brushing the strands of hair off her face, slipping them behind her ear. She starts talking to Maya even though she's not even sure if she hears her…
"Oh Maya, it wasn't supposed to be like this. I didn't mean for this to happen. I thought for sure you and Emily would break up and then you and I could, we could try again."
She runs her hands through her golden hair holding it back, her blue eyes glossed over as she looks at her in a daze. Maya lies still, so quiet…
"I never meant to hurt you, you have to believe me! Maya!" she falls over her incognizant body needing to feel her warmth, needing to feel her anything.
At the Military Housing Base in Texas…
"So, I'll be in the other room for a little while, okay?"
"Emmy, do what you need to do. Your mom will catch me up on what's going on."
"Thanks."
She hugs her dad and then her mom retreating to the back bedroom. She opens her laptop powering it up waiting for it to connect to the wireless internet. Her phone is still in her bag needing to be charged so she doesn't know if Maya responded to her email yet. She even thought about asking to use her dad's phone but then decided she could say what she wants to say more effectively in writing. When she finally catches the signal she opens her email account and finds she has a message from Maya…
Emily,
I love you so much that I did want to protect you and I still do. You are my truth and my heart and my love and I'm ready to prove that to you. We need to talk.
You're right, you are my destiny. And that's why I'm ready to tell you everything. I hope you will hear me out and find it in your heart to accept my truth.
I never wanted you or anyone else to know about this but if I want to be your forever then I need to be honest with myself and more importantly I need to be honest with you.
You are the love of my life, a life I plan on spending with you.
Maya.
Emily tears up as she absorbs Maya's words especially when she said she's planning on spending their lives together. She smiles to herself but then furrows her brow not understanding what she means about never wanting her or anyone else to know. Know what? Emily ponders this for a moment before sending her reply…
Dear Maya,
You are the love of my life, a life I plan on spending with you too.
Today, I had a really scary thing happen on my flight. The cabin shook so much that my mom and I got tossed around along with all the other passengers. I held onto my mom so tight closing my eyes trying to think of something to comfort me. That something was you. I thought about all the amazing ways you make me feel. I thought about the first time we met, our first fight and our first make up make out session. I thought about the first time we made love and how you made me feel, like you could never love another the way you love me. I thought about the night of the Masquerade Ball seeing you appear out of nowhere when I thought you were gone. I thought about loving you totally and completely knowing you are the only one who could ever own my heart.
During the flight, I talked to my mom about our fight. I don't like that you kept secrets from me after you were so adamant about no more secrets between us. I felt like you were holding me to a higher standard than you were holding yourself but my mom made me realize something. I love you too much to let this come between us. I know you will tell me when the time is right and I just want you to know that I care about you so I'll wait.
I'll be in Texas for a week visiting my dad. I think this time apart will be good for us, it will make us stronger. But when you return to Rosewood in a few weeks; I need you to know that I'll be there to welcome you home and back into my arms again.
I love you Maya St. Germain, only you.
Emily.
She hits send smiling, leaning back against the head board, knowing that this email will make everything better and maybe even bring Maya back to her sooner...
"I love you Maya, please hurry and read this. I need to know you're okay. I need to know we're okay."
At the hospital…
"Chelsea!" Aunt Maren calls out. "Where is she? Is she okay?"
"I don't know. They won't tell me anything cuz I'm not family. All I know is that she was lying on the floor with her eyes open but it was like she wasn't there," her lip begins to quiver as she can't fight the tears threatening to stain her cheeks.
Aunt Maren embraces Chelsea, "I know you had something to do with this and you better hope she comes out of it okay." She squeezes her tightly against her reinforcing the magnitude of her words.
"I never meant for any of this to happen. I'm so, so sorry. I promise I'll do whatever I can to make it better. I promise," Chelsea chokes out.
"I'm holding you to that," Aunt Maren warns.
A doctor approaches them, "Excuse me, I was told that you're Maya St. Germain's aunt."
"Yes, I'm Maren…"
"Is she okay?" Chelsea interrupts.
"She appears to be fine physically. But emotionally, I'm not sure. Could there have been some kind of traumatic event that triggered this reaction in her?"
"I know that she had an argument with her girlfriend but I can't imagine that would affect her like this," Aunt Maren tells the doctor.
"Well, something did affect her and the sooner we can figure it out the sooner we can figure out a way to bring her back," the doctor tries to offer some comfort.
Just then the local news anchors interrupt the regular scheduled programming bringing everyone's attention to the TV monitor mounted on the wall in the waiting area.
"We now have confirmation that the crash of Delta flight 1728 en route to Philadelphia has taken the lives of all of its 289 passengers and the flight crew. We extend our deepest sympathies to those families affected by the crash of Delta flight 1728…"
"Oh no!" Aunt Maren gasps.
"What is it?" the doctor asks.
"Maya's girlfriend Emily…she was flying back to Philly today with her mom…oh no…she must think Emily was on that flight!" she cries.
"I'm so sorry," the doctor offers his condolences. "So you think Maya saw this?"
"The TV was on when I found her," Chelsea confirms.
"The good news, Maren, is that now we know what triggered her state of unconsciousness. But I must prepare you…"
"Prepare me?" Aunt Maren asks unnerved by the doctor's tone.
"Maya, is in what we call a catatonic state."
"What does that mean?" she asks.
"It's like she's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder."
"I thought only people in the military suffered from that."
"Anyone can experience it because anyone can experience something so stressful that it affects them more emotionally than physically," the doctor tries to explain in more detail. "In her case, she is suffering from motionless catatonia known as Kahlbaum Syndrome."
"Kahlbaum Syndrome?"
"It means emotionally she isn't with us. It might take another traumatic event to snap her out of it."
"You mean like Emily walking into Maya's hospital room?" Chelsea asks.
"Yes."
"Is there anything else that might help her besides another traumatic event?" she asks not wanting Maya to have to go through that again.
"Initial treatment is aimed at providing symptomatic relief. Benzodiazepines are the first line of treatment, and high doses are often required. But ultimately the underlying cause needs to be addressed."
"Emily," Aunt Maren says looking at Chelsea who nervously looks away.
Chelsea takes in a deep breath letting it out slowly. She puts her hand around Aunt Maren's arm catching her by surprise. They look at each other. Aunt Maren seems to already know what Chelsea is about to say before she says it…
"Or her secret."
At Aunt Maren's…
Maya's phone lights up indicating a message has arrived. A black gloved hand picks it up opening the message reading the email from Emily. A glove comes off. A message is typed. The message is sent…
Several hours later at the Military Housing Base in Texas…
After dinner Emily races to the back bedroom to check her laptop for any incoming messages. Her phone didn't charge long enough so the battery died while they were out. She has no idea if Maya responded to her email. She types in her username and password waiting for her account to open. And when it does, her eyes light up when she sees she has a message from Maya. She opens it and reads…
Dear Emily,
You're dead to me.
