At Aunt Maren's…

Maya's phone lights up indicating a message has arrived. A black gloved hand picks it up opening the message reading the email from Emily. A glove comes off. A message is typed. The message is sent…

Several hours later at the Military Housing Base in Texas…

After dinner Emily races to the back bedroom to check her laptop for any incoming messages. Her phone didn't charge long enough so the battery died while they were out. She has no idea if Maya responded to her email. She types in her username and password waiting for her account to open. And when it does, her eyes light up when she sees she has a message from Maya. She opens it and reads…

Dear Emily,

You're dead to me.

MayA

Chapter 31: Maya's Secret

In California, the day Maya is sent to the hospital…

Aunt Maren is busy on her cell phone calling Maya's parents to let them know what happened. They tell her that they will be taking a flight as soon as possible and should be in California by the next day. Chelsea volunteers to go back to the house to bring some of Maya's things to the hospital that might help bring her out of this state of catatonia, specifically anything Emily. But when she gets to the house there is already someone inside…

"Hello? Can I help you?" Chelsea calls out.

The black hooded figure turns around putting Maya's phone in his pocket. He lets the hood fall from his head revealing his identity while removing the other glove he is wearing. He approaches Chelsea…

"Oh, it's you. What are you doing here? Better yet, what are you doing in California?"

"Well, hello to you too Chelsea. Maya invited me."

"She did?"

"Yes. You know my parents have relatives here. I told Maya before she left that I would be here at the end of July and here I am. So, where's Maya?" he asks.

"At the hospital."

"The hospital? I was wondering what happened over here. Is she going to be okay?" He sounds very concerned.

"I don't know. I found her lying on the floor over there. We think she saw the news about a plane heading to Philadelphia that crashed and we think Maya believes that Emily was on that plane. She's in what the doctors are calling a state of catatonia."

"What? Emily was in a plane crash? A state of who?"

"Not who. What. Basically she's not emotionally present and the only way to get her back is…"

"By her seeing Emily," he finishes.

"Right. And it looks like that's not gonna happen so…"

"So…"

Chelsea walks over to where she first saw the visitor. She looks around and notices broken pieces of plastic from a cell phone case but no cell phone.

"Umm, so where's the cell phone Noel?"

"What?"

"Maya's cell phone. Don't give me that look. I saw you put something in your pocket and what's with the leather gloves and black hoodie in this weather anyway?"

"Chelsea, just let it go."

"No. Give me her phone."

"You don't know what you're getting yourself into."

"Oh please. Give me the fucking cell phone Noel."

He reluctantly hands it to her.

"What were you doing with this anyway? What do you need Maya's cell phone for?"

"It's better you don't get involved."

"Noel, I'm already involved. What did you do?"

"Look. I got this text on my cell. It said to get Maya's phone and find an email from Emily. And if I didn't do it…let's just say I was forced to do it. Then I was told to email her this."

He shows her the email and Chelsea's mouth falls open, her hand quickly covers it.

"Oh my god! So whoever told you to send this wanted Emily to think Maya hates her? And this person sent you that text before anyone knew anything about a plane crash."

"So, shouldn't we call Emily like right now? Let's find out if she's okay."

"Let me see that email again."

"Here."

"What's this capital A at the end of Maya?"

"What?"

"There," she points out.

"I told you its better you don't get involved. And I was in a hurry trying not to get caught and I got caught anyway. So can we find out if Emily is okay?"

"No. No one is going to call her. Let me handle this."

"Handle this how? By keeping Emily away from Maya so you can have her all to yourself! That's so like you to do something so fucked up! Emily could be dead! And Maya! I need to see her…"

"And you need to shut up so I can think."

I glint forms in her clear blue eyes.

"What are you planning? Oh no, Chelsea you wouldn't. You can't!"

"Noel, keep your mouth shut or when Maya does snap out of it, I'll tell her what you did to Emily."

"This is so out of control! I mean someone could have killed Emily and now I'm a part of it!"

"Noel, I'll keep your secret but you need to find him. Tell him what happened."

"He won't come."

"He has to..."

Aunt Maren tries calling Emily's mom from the hospital but she only has the Fields house number and no one's answering. She was hoping someone would pick up so she could tell Maya that Emily is okay. Still, she leaves a message praying that they really are okay…

"Hello, this is Maya's Aunt Maren. I need you to call me on my cell at 555-775-3012 as soon as you get this. It's Maya. Something's happened. Please just call. Please."

She doesn't even have Emily's cell phone number to try. She was always with Maya so she never saw the need. And her employee paperwork lists Aunt Maren's home phone number as the contact number. There's nothing more she can do except wait and hope that everything on the Fields' end is okay.

She is interrupted out of her thoughts when the doctor suggests she too go home. There's nothing more they can do today so they're going to inject Maya with a sleep medication in the hopes of easing the burden of her catatonia…

Aunt Maren makes the drive home from the hospital finding Chelsea just about to leave with some of Emily's things.

"The doctor sent me home. They want her to sleep. We'll try again tomorrow," she says sounding exhausted.

"We'll? So I can come back?" Chelsea sounds surprised.

"Yes Chelsea, you can come back," she nods.

When Chelsea gets in her car to leave for the night she makes a call…

"Noel, the doctors sent everyone home for the night. Meet me at the hospital tomorrow and bring him too."

She opens her bag to put her phone in it and spies Maya's phone. She pulls it out making sure the power is off so all her calls will go to voice mail. And before she throws it back in her purse, she starts thinking out loud,

"Maya, when I saw you unmoving on the floor my heart filled with the love I've had for you for so long. But then I find out your condition is, of course, all about Emily. You ditch me for Rosewood and fall in love in the blink of an eye! I thought for sure Paige would come between you two but all she managed to do is mess everything up didn't she! Well I took care of her and the powers that be took care of Emily and now it's just you Maya. You and your secret! A secret that will soon be exposed, a shame you won't be able to bear and finally I will have won!"

The next day in Texas…

"Wayne, I don't know what to make of her behavior. She was so happy when we got home and now…I don't know, I just don't know."

Wayne pulls his wife away from the sink full of dishes holding her against him.

"Could it have something to do with Maya?"

"Probably," she looks up at him.

"Well then, why don't we call Maya and find out what's going on," he suggests.

Pam smiles, "That's a really good idea."

They try her cell but it keeps going to voice mail so they try her Aunt's house number.

"Hello?"

"Maren?"

"No, she's upstairs, I'm Chelsea, a friend of the family. Can I help you?" she asks sweetly.

"Yes, this is Mr. Fields, Emily's father."

"Oh yes, hello Mr. Fields, is everything alright?" She's praying it isn't but something inside of her says otherwise.

"Well, I hope it is. Emily seems a little distressed this morning and we were hoping to talk to Maya to try and figure it all out."

Fuck me! Chelsea clenches a fist when she hears that Emily is alive. She takes a breath letting it out slowly desperately trying to think of a convincing lie before responding,

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Fields but Maya is out on a boat trip with her parents and they won't be back until…actually I'm not even sure when they'll be back. And as luck would have it, there's no cell service," Chelsea schemes.

"A boat trip. That sounds really nice. Then could you just leave Maya a note to call Emily when she gets back."

"Sure, no problem. Is there anything else?"

"No, I guess that's all. Thank you, Chelsea. Bye."

"Bye Mr. Fields..."

"So what was that about?" Pam asks.

"I guess Maya needed to get away too. She went on a boat trip with her parents and there's no cell service. That's probably why the call went straight to voice mail," Wayne explains.

"I saw the yacht club on my way over to Maya's Aunt's. There are some pretty spectacular boats docked there if you can even call them boats," she chuckles.

The Fields retreat to the family room giving Emily a little more time to get herself together. They'll tell her about the phone call if they feel she looks up to hearing about it.

In California…

"Who was that on the phone Chelsea?" Aunt Maren asks while walking towards her from the stairs.

"Oh just the restaurant asking about Maya. I told them you would let them know if anything changes," she lies.

"Thank you Chelsea. I appreciate that. Wow, I'm seeing a whole other side to you. It's too bad it took something like this to bring it out."

Chelsea just smiles then glares at the back of Aunt Maren as she passes her by.

"Are you ready Chelsea?"

"Yes of course," back goes her smile.

"Can you grab Emily's things please?"

"Sure."

Once Aunt Maren leaves, she grabs the bag swinging it around carelessly.

"I doubt any of this will help Maya, at least I'm hoping it won't. And I can't believe that bitch wasn't on that plane. No matter. That email will keep her away as long as Noel keeps quiet."

In Texas…

Emily emerges from the darkness of her room, not showered and looking hellish.

"Emily, what's gotten into you?"

"Mom, please, just leave me alone."

"No, I won't leave you alone. What happened last night?"

"Oh nothing, it's just that Maya…nothing, it's no big deal," she tries to cover.

"No big deal?"

"Mom, she doesn't want to make it work. I thought she did but I guess I pissed her off by leaving," Emily says sounding more mad than sad.

"Honey, she'll get over it. You two always make up."

"I'm not so sure this time around."

Suddenly, Emily just bursts out crying surprising both her mom and her dad. Her mom takes her in her arms.

"Maybe we should all go back to Rosewood. She'll be around her friends and I'll take a short leave," Mr. Fields decides.

"Wayne, are you sure you can do that?"

"Look at her. Of course, I can do that. I'll see if we can even leave tonight."

In California…

Chelsea's cell rings when they arrive at the hospital.

"It's my parents," she lies.

"I'll take the bag and you can come up when you're done," Aunt Maren offers.

"Thanks," Chelsea responds handing her the bag.

"Noel, what is it?" she asks annoyed by his call.

"I found him but…"

"But what?"

"I told you he wouldn't come."

"Well, get him to come."

"Chelsea."

"Noel, get him to the hospital."

"But…"

"Just do it."

She hangs up on him as she enters the lobby of the hospital. She steps onto the elevator pressing the button to Maya's floor and when the doors open she finds Mrs. St. Germain in a hug with Aunt Maren and Mr. St. Germain standing nearby.

"Oh, Eva, I'm so glad you got here. Have the doctor's told you anything new?"

She releases her from their hug, "No, nothing. But what's all this?" She asks pointing to the bag.

"These are some of Emily's things. The doctor asked us to bring them here. I guess he wants us to show them to her and see if anything registers."

"Maya's still asleep. They said she just lies there with her eyes open not responding to anything or anyone?" Mr. St. Germain asks needing more clarity.

"That's pretty much how she was yesterday. They said another major trauma should trigger her back to us if this doesn't work."

"Another trauma?" he asks confused.

"That's why we have Emily's things. The last thing Maya saw was the news about a plane crash. She thinks Emily was on that plane."

"Why would she think that?"

"Because it was headed for Philadelphia and so was Emily..."

Maya is in a deep slumber from the medication she was given. The doctor believes it will wear off soon and for everyone to just be patient. In the meantime, Maya's eyes move behind her lids. She is in REM sleep, the deepest part of the sleep cycle, dreaming…

I'm walking alone along the cliffs having lost everything. There's no one to turn to, it's just me and the ocean breeze. It's a loneliness that only someone who has loved and lost can feel. I stand high above the dark waters watching the waves crash below me. The air blows against my white satin robe, forcing it open revealing my white satin nightgown. My long dark tresses flow wildly behind me as the wind tries pushing me back but fails time after time. Why is this happening? Why can't I ever be happy? Why is everyone that I've ever loved being taken from me? Is it because I'm not worthy of love? I take a step closer, the sand shuffling with my stride, loosening the earth beneath me, causing the rocks to tumble over the edge, plunging into the blackness of the ocean…

To Be Continued…

Coming up…

Chelsea's plan begins to unfold with Noel's unwitting help…

BTW…Emily didn't notice the Capital A at the end of Maya because she was so distraught by the words she read. Also, the email came from Maya's phone not from a blocked number.

Don't worry someone will notice…

***the plane crash was a coincidence…-A did not take down the plane but –A used the news footage to make Maya think Emily was on the plane…so who is –A?

I pretty much spelled it out for you! ;)
