Me and Maya at Rosewood Prep! It's gonna be a great year!

I put my phone in my pocket biting into my lower lip, smiling as I think about all the alone time we're going to have. Mm…can't wait…

Chapter 53: Moving In

Maya POV

Me, Spencer and Hanna are making our way back to the dorm after taking a self-guided tour of the campus when I hear my name.

"Maya! Hey Maya!"

We all turn around.

"Oh my god! Noel! What are you doing here?"

We hug while Spencer gives Hanna a look of disapproval. She's not a fan of his.

"Well, my parents thought that I needed a fresh start after all that stuff happened in California."

"Oh right you were there," Spencer says in a bored monotone way.

"So you saw Toby fall off the cliff to his death," Hanna says as clueless as ever, not even realizing what she's saying in front of Spencer who looks angry but more so sad.

"Noel saved our lives. If it wasn't for him it would be me and Emily at the bottom of the cliff. He saved Chelsea too. Noel really is a hero," I hug him again.

"Thanks Maya. I just knew I had to do something. Toby was out of control and I'm sorry Spencer but it's true."

"Yeah well, this is just great. Everyone from that night is going to Rosewood Prep. Is Chelsea here too?" Spencer asks with severe sarcasm.

"Hey, hang out with us," I suggest wrapping myself around his arm.

"What?" Spencer responds in a way that shows her disapproval of my suggestion.

"If you're sure."

"Of course!"

"Yeah, I'm still unpacking so you can help with the heavy boxes," Hanna drags Noel through the common room and up the stairs.

"Maya, what the hell!"

"Spencer, he's a good guy. I like hanging out with him."

"You mean you like smoking with him."

"Well, that too, but if we ever got caught we'd be expelled. Rosewood High was easy to get away with it but security's pretty tight here. And anyway I don't really have an interest in getting high any time soon."

"Good. But that doesn't mean we have to hang out with him every day."

We follow Hanna and Noel to her room, "Spencer, if Noel and I wanna hang out we will. He's a good friend and a good guy and if you'd just give him half a chance you'd see that too."

I speed up my pace getting ahead of Spencer. She can wallow in her 'why me' attitude alone.

When we get to Hanna's room, she has poor Noel moving the furniture in all these different layouts ending up with everything right where it was when they got there. He looks at me and we laugh cuz that's Hanna for ya!

"So do you have a roommate Hanna?" He asks still catching his breath.

"I do. It's Emily."

"Get out! Really?"

"Yep. She's moving in tomorrow."

"Wow, so you're all together again."

"Well, Aria is staying in South Carolina with her grandparents," Hanna tells him.

"Oh right, the whole Mr. Fitz thing. What a perve. And I can't say I'm surprised. I saw them once and I even tried talking to Aria about it but she shut me down. I wish I made her listen to me."

"He's where he needs to be—jail," Spencer leans in the doorframe of Hanna's room with arms folded across her chest.

There's an air of gloom in the air until Noel clears his throat and asks, "So what are you all doing tomorrow?"

"Emily's moving in so we'll probably be helping with that," I remind him.

"Oh yeah. So, do you think you could use an extra hand?" He's being so sweet.

"Sure," I say getting a massive eye roll from Spencer.

"I'm going to go. I'll see you later Maya. Goodnight Hanna. Noel."

She turns and heads down the hall to our room.

"That was intense," Hanna notices.

"She's been through a lot. Her boyfriend was –A and I think she feels foolish for having no idea," I try explaining her behavior.

"She didn't suspect anything?" Noel asks.

"Well, neither did we. No one knew he was the one who threatened your family Noel and threatened everyone in some way or had his minions do it for him," I remind them.

"There's no way she's opening her heart to anyone. Not for a long time," Hanna says sadly.

"I get that, I do. But she's being kind of a bitch dontcha think?" Noel says honestly.

"Guarded," I correct him.

We hear an Australian accent in the hallway so we all head that way to talk to Samara.

"Hey," I call out and she stops to look, "so how were Emily's parents?" I ask.

"They needed a bit of convincing but they came through. I got the paperwork in just in time. She'll be here tomorrow. And you sir, it's almost nine o'clock, which means you need to be going."

"All right, all right. See ya tomorrow?" He asks hopefully.

"Yeah, I'll walk you out," I say leaving Hanna with Samara.

Hanna POV

"So are you best buddies with Pammy now?" I can't resist after Maya's retelling of her Pam story.

"Mrs. Fields was lovely, just protective." I love her accent!

"Yeah, she'll probably enroll here just so she can keep an eye on Emily after the California fiasco."

"California fiasco?"

I've peaked Samara's curiosity.

"You didn't hear?"

"Hear what?"

"Maya and Emily were stalked by this psycho who just happened to be Spencer's boyfriend."

She looks stunned. She takes my arm and leads me to her room, "Tell me more."

She shuts the door.

Maya POV

"Noel, I'm glad you're here. And I know you don't want us gushing over your heroics but you really did save us."

"I would do anything for you Maya. You're like my best friend."

"Aww."

We hug.

"See ya tomorrow?"

"Yeah, see ya tomorrow."

I smile. This is going to be great! I have my best girlfriend, my best friend and Emily's best friends all going to Rosewood Prep. It couldn't get any better than this.

I just hope it's not too good to be true…

Samara POV

"…and that's what happened," Hanna fills in all the details.

"I can't even believe it. It sounds so unreal, like that couldn't possibly have played out that way."

"It's the truth; at least, that's what we were told."

"Hanna, that's some story. Thank you for filling in the details. It puts everything in a whole new light."

"It's so crazy it has to be true."

"I agree." Oh this bit of information ties things up very nicely. I knew there was more to this. Hanna, you're a talker that's for sure and I will use that to my advantage.

"Love your accent by the way," she says as she leaves my room.

"Thanks Hanna. It was really nice talking to you and getting to know you." And we'll be talking a lot more!

I close my door behind her smiling. With Mrs. Fields request and this information, the year is going to be really interesting…

The next day…

Emily POV

My parents pull up to the curb in front of my dorm. I text Maya to play it cool when she sees me so my parents won't freak out about me being here with my girlfriend. Shortly thereafter, she casually swaggers down the sidewalk towards me. And oh what a swagger it is!

"Hey Emily!"

"Maya!"

We hug but no kiss. We'll save that and more for later!

"Mr. and Mrs. Fields, it's so great to see you," she hugs them too.

"Maya, you're looking well," my mom replies with a smile but I can't tell if it's fake or not. I know she loves Maya but I think with all the craziness over the summer she's not feeling as gung ho for Emaya as before.

"Maya, so good to see you," my dad says. At least I know he's being sincere. He always liked Maya especially after she told him the story about how her dad gave her mom a Sharpie engagement ring. Pam wasn't so thrilled by his reaction to her story. He enjoyed it way too much for her liking!

As we unload everything onto the sidewalk, I wonder, who's that guy approaching? Short brown hair, tall, very familiar looking, is that—Noel?

"Hey Em, how can I help? Mr. Fields," he shakes his hand, "Mrs. Fields," they nod to each other.

"So you're here too Noel?" My mom has this kind of 'is everyone from our senior class going here' look on her face.

"My parents thought I could use a change of scenery and I think I could use a more regimented environment to study in."

"Good for you Noel. Glad to hear you're in it for a great education," my dad says in a way that he wants to make sure I heard what Noel said and that I too am here to study.

"Emily!"

"Hanna? What are you doing here?"

"Not just me, Spencer too!" she waves her over.

"Oh my god, you're both going to Rosewood Prep! That's amazing!" I can't believe it!

"Surprise!" Maya holds her arms out with palms up smiling.

"So did you hear the news?" Hanna asks excitedly.

"No, what news?" I look at Maya questioningly.

"We're roomies!" She throws her arms around me and I look over her shoulder at Maya mouthing 'what the fuck'!

"Surprise!" She shrugs her shoulders.

"Hanna, you're roommates with Emily?"

"I sure am P—Mrs. Fields," she catches herself just in time.

My mom is smiling with what looks like relief splashed across her face. So that's it. She was worried about Maya being my roommate. That must have been it because she seems way more relaxed now.

"And Spencer is my roommate," Maya says.

"Oh." I lean towards Maya's ear and whisper, "think we can talk Spencer into switching places with me?"

She smiles, looking away. Hmm, something's definitely up that I'm not privy to just yet.

Everyone helps bring my things up to my room and then Samara takes my parents on a tour of the campus. She winks at me as they leave, I suppose, in an attempt to reassure me that she'll convince them that they made the right choice.

Maya helps me make my bed while Hanna sets up my desk and Spencer puts my clothes in the closet and my dresser while Noel puts my bulletin board on the wall so I can put up some pictures. And yes, they are mostly of me and Maya. What can I say, I'm in love!

And I can't stop smiling!

Hanna notices Maya and me getting all cuddly and playful and suggests to Spencer and Noel that they give us some space. Spencer rolls her eyes as they leave. I can hear them talking about going to Noel's dorm to check out the guys space. Spencer reluctantly tags-along.

I close the door and lock it.

"We don't have much time," I say.

"That's okay. I don't want to rush through anything. And I think you should unlock the door."

"What?" I'm surprised by her not wanting to be intimate while we can.

"If your parents come back to a locked door, they'll have you packed up and back home before you can say Rosewood Prep. Let's just hang out and," she moves my hair from the back of my neck and starts kissing tiny kisses, "make out a little."

I unlock the door per her wishes and turn to face her, "How 'bout we make out a lot."

We laugh for a minute and then settle down looking into each other's eyes. Her hand sneaks to the nape of my neck and she gently pulls me to her lips. They connect, they seal, they kiss long and desirously, while our tongues tap and slide against each other's. We stumble to my bed, lying down, lips never leaving the others.

I'm on top of her, smothering her, barely letting her breathe.

"Em, baby, slow down."

"But Maya," I kiss down her neck, "I can't help myself."

"I know. I'm having a hard time resisting you too."

"Then don't."

"We have too. This is why Spencer and I want to stay roommates."

I pull away quickly, "What? You want to be her roommate?"

"Emily, we would always be in each other's beds instead of studying. You know that."

I know she's right but this still sucks.

"Maya, I don't want to be apart from you."

"You're just down the hall. We can hook up on the weekends just like we were going to do if you stayed at Rosewood High."

I flop onto my back next to her, "Ugghhh! Why do you have to right!"

"Aww," she takes her hand guiding my face to look at her, "I love you baby, you know that. But if we want to build on that love then we have to study, get good grades and get into good colleges so we can have the future we deserve," and there's that sparkle in her eye that makes me succumb to her wishes.

"Damn it Maya, I know you're right but sometimes I wish we could just be seventeen."

"I think we can do that for a little while anyway. I think Samara will do her best to keep them busy, actually, knowing Samara; she's probably convinced your parents to do laps in the pool!"

"Hahaha! I bet she could!"

Our laughter subsides and I lie in Maya's arms. We kiss gently, feeling the warmth of our bodies but not acting on those other feelings that arise…

"Knock, knock," I hear a rap on the door and the knob clicking open.

Maya stays lying on my bed while I leap to the chair at my desk. She's on her side and we're making up conversation. The door opens and I swear it's like that time my mom came home early from the city and kicked Maya out.

"Hey mom, how was the tour?"

"It was nice, actually it was pretty amazing," she says but has a look of disappointment on her face like she was hoping to catch us in the act.

"You're mother's right. It's very impressive and Samara was an excellent tour guide."

"It was the accent wasn't it," Maya suggests.

"It might've been," my dad chuckles.

"I think the pool and the campus as a whole are wonderful. Your dad and I are glad we could do this for you."

I start getting all teary eyed leaping up to hug them both.

"Umm, I'll go find the others," Maya gets up to leave.

"No, Maya, stay. You've been nothing but respectful where my daughter is concerned and I really appreciate that," my mom surprises us all with her candor.

I hug my mom again, looking over her shoulder at Maya, mouthing 'I love you.' She smiles and mouths it back.

"Well, Pam, we should go, let Emily get acclimated to her new school."

My mom looks up at him nodding her head as she's suddenly become emotional.

"I'm not that far away mom. You can visit whenever you want to and I'll be home for holidays and stuff."

"I know. It's just that I thought I had another year of waking you up for school. You know, dragging you out of bed and insisting that you eat something. Maya," she looks directly at her, "please make sure she eats something in the morning."

"Will do Mrs. Fields, no problem."

We do the hugging thing and my parents leave for home.

"Wow, that was pretty awesome of my mom dontcha think?"

"She's finally accepting that you're growing up. Now it might be easier for her when you go off to college."

"Let's not rush it. I still want an amazing senior year with you."

Maya gets up from the bed and we hug and we kiss.

"Let's go to Noel's dorm and see his room."

"Okay."

We kiss softly and join the others at Noel's…

"Hey, where's Spencer?" I ask.

"Ugh, she was being such a Debbie Downer, even she knew it, so she left. She should be back at the girl's dorm."

"I guess I remind her of everything bad that happened," Noel says apologetically.

"Look Noel, she needs to get over it. She can't blame you or any of us for who Toby became," Maya says.

"I think it's more so that she's the smartest girl in town but she wasn't smart enough to know that her boyfriend was –A," Hanna says bluntly but with a compelling argument.

"Yeah but she needs to get over the embarrassment," I'm really having trouble sympathizing when Maya and I almost got killed.

"Noel, she'll come around," Maya says.

"I hope so. I just feel really bad for her."

"We all do but she needs to move on. Toby is gone," I say.

"She'll meet someone, someone who will make her forget all about Toby," Hanna says slyly.

"What are you up to Hanna?" I ask.

"Nothing. Nothing at all. I'm just saying there has to be someone around here who can distract her."

"I hope you're right. I really do."

Lights out at the dorm…

I lie in bed thinking, I was never a fan of Noel's but he does care about Maya and he was there for her when we needed time apart. I know he saved our lives and all that I just hope he knows that he and Maya will only ever be just friends. And then I think about Spencer and I hope she'll find someone who can distract her just like Hanna said. Sometimes Hanna is full of surprises and good ideas. I laugh to myself.

Then I think about Maya lying in her bed in her room and I so badly want to be lying there next to her. And I'm kind of surprised that she decided with Spencer that she wanted to focus on studying instead of focusing on me. Ugh! I need to stop thinking like that! I know she loves me but this whole prep school thing isn't really what I want.

What I really want is down the hall.

What I really want is Maya…
