Chapter 5
It's been three weeks since the FT mages started training. Just as Shadis predicted, they were indeed fast learners and had managed to perfect their hand-to-hand combat fighting technique. What had surprised and yet pleased our favorite dragon slayers was that they were completely unaffected by the 3D manuever gears; not only did their physical features change, but also some of their 'weaknesses'.
"Today is going to be the day they go on their first mission..." An ominous voice spoke. A figure of a person had been spying on the recruits through an orb called a teleorb. "Let's see how they do outside the walls..." A malicious smile plastered the person's face.
***With the Recruits***
"Saddled up?" Reiner asks his new close friend, Laxus.
"Just about." Laxus was tightening the straps on his horse, Dolihan. "All we have to do is keep formation, right?"
"Yeah. If you need to, just follow my lead." The two brutes smile at each other.
"Don't worry you'll be fine." Sasha rested her hand on her new friend Juvia's shoulder; the two just 'clicked' since they met. "I know it's scary, but don't let fear control you, you'll loose your self purpose." Juvia gently smiled to Sasha.
"Uh, I think I might need some help getting on my horse..." Mira said. Jean and Connie practically fought with each other on who would be the lucky guy to grasp the hotty's waist and help lift her.
"I can help you!" Jean almost shouted, his hand pushing against Connie's face.
"This guy doesn't know how to treat a lady, his hands are calloused and he's really rough!" Connie protested while wrapping his arms around Jean, trying to prevent him from coming near the beauty."I, on the other hand, know how to treat a woman. After all, my best friend is a woman" Buzz-cut said proudly.
"Oh dear..." Mira said to herself.
"Please allow me." A voice said close by Mira's ear. She whipped her head to see whose voice it was.
"Oh, Freed." She smiled. "Sure." She smiled. She felt more comfortable having a friend help her on rather than two guys she barely even knew. She wasn't dumb, she knew the real reason they wanted to help her. She also knew that Freed's mind and heart were to pure to think perversely, she was surprised that he even offered to help. Freed reached to her and, instead of grabbing her waist, grabbed underneath her arms and tried lifting her like a kid. He did manage to lift her, but not high enough. A blush of embarrassment rushed to Freed's face.
"Sorry..." He said.
"Ah, how bothersome." A voice familiar to the two mages said. Laxus appeared and grabbed Mira from Freed and settled her on her horse. "Want a tiara too, princess?" He gave her a smug smile.
"Everyone! Mount up!" The leader's voice shouted. Hanji was leading the groups out today, with Levi's help of course. Everyone did suite and got ready to charge their horses out the gates.
***Outside the Safety of the Walls***
"So what exactly is the point of this?!" Gajeel asked, raising his voice so that his comrades could hear.
"Didn't you pay attention in class?!" Annie asked. "It's called Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation. The point is to get a full view of the land and increase the possibilities of survival. Please tell me you know which flare to shoot if a Titan is spotted?"
"Of course I do." He said. "I think..." Gajeel teased. Annie was not amused.
To the front of the formation was Hanji, Levi, Eren, and Armin. Mikasa was not far off. They were leading the group south from the gate which they left. Their goal for today's outing wasn't all what the rest had seemed. The reason was to find one of the Intelligent Titans, not to engage and/or capture it, but to gather whatever they could about it without having any casualties.
"What do you exactly plan to do if we see one? If one of us launches a flare, we are bound to be seen." Levi asked Hanji. He had ran his horse up to hers so that the others wouldn't hear him.
"I might have the formation split. I just need to gather information..." She said rather unsure.
"And risk having some one die?! Hanji, do you realize that your betting on life here?!" Levi angrily asked. "These aren't our 'normal titans', in fact they may be worse than the Armored Titan."
"I know that!" She yelled. "What else am I supposed to do?" She said frustratingly. "I don't know how to deal with the enemy if I don't know a single thing about them."
"Then why did you bring the entire squadron?" Levi said, becoming frustrated as well.
"Because they need to know what they're up against." She whipped the reigns on her horse hard, making it run faster and away from Levi.
The formation kept on running for a good 15 minutes with no Intelligent in sight. So far, so good. The group began to approach the forest, the one which Levi and Hanji had barely escaped weeks before. Levi didn't have good feelings about approaching it, but he didn't say anything. By the time they infiltrated the forest, they slowed down the pace of the formation.
Creepy, just the way they entered and left it weeks before. A cold sweat slowly dripped down Hanji's temple. Everyone thinks that she should be ecstatic about finding Titans, but what they don't know is that she was slightly terrified of the Intelligent, only slightly. All she needed was to be at a safe distance from them and quietly observe. She needed to find a weakness as quick as possible. They could be other titanshifters, but something felt off about that theory. Nothing she could pinpoint exactly, but something didn't settle well with it.
"How are we supposed to know the difference between a Titan and an Intelligent if we see one?" Armin asked.
"Intelligents have a peculiar 'x' mark along their napes. " Hanji said. "It's almost like it marks where to slice. But no one has ever been able to take one down."
They kept on going through the forest until Hanji raised her right hand as a signal to stop. She heard a rustling sound nearby. She nodded to Eren. It was his signal to check it out from above. He used his 3D maneuver gear and rested himself on an above tree branch. He spotted it, an Intelligent; it was devouring a deer.
"What the...?" Eren said to himself. Titans don't eat anything but humans, why is this one eating deer? What could it possibly gain from it? Eren turned around to look for Hanji and Levi. He urged them to come up here with him, so they did.
"It's eating a deer?" Hanji couldn't believe it. It wasn't swallowing it whole, it was taking bites after bites, chewing it even. She eyed the x mark on its neck. It would be an open shot... Her crave for research got her thinking.
"No." Levi said. Eren looked at him confused.
"But-" Hanji started.
"You get that things attention, and we will be its next meal." Levi told her.
They watched the beast a while longer, trying to see if it would do anything else. A buzzard approached the Titan and began to circle above it while making annoying kawing sounds. Eren, Hanji, and Levi kept watching. FWP! they flinched. The buzzard was caught swiftly by the Intelligent, it began squirming violently in the beast's hand. CHOMP! It was eaten. Blood sprayed a great distance, a droplet managing to hit Levi's trousers.
"Tch" His tongue clicked. He was disgusted. Hanji and Eren looked to Levi, then back to the beast. However they were greeted with a rush of horror... it was looking right at them.
"We need to leave now." Hanji said. "RETREAT!" Eren and Levi zipped down to their horses telling everyone to retreat, but Hanji stood there on that branch for a few minutes, staring at it. Even though everyone was loudly rushing back, it didn't do anything; it just stood there with its blood covered face and eyed Hanji. It was giving her a look, a look that she couldn't describe. Her trance was interrupted by an arm firmly wrapped around her torso. It was Levi.
"What are you doing?! We need to leave now!" he jumped down, using his 3D maneuver gear and zoomed through the trees, catching up with the rest of the squadron.
"LASDLKJWOISDASHFASWQWEI!" A loud roar shouted, then rumbling was felt. The Intelligent was charging its way towards them.
"Sh*t" Levi cursed. When the group finally reached the end of the forest, Levi dropped Hanji onto the first horse he saw, he landed on the next.
"It's charging at us!" Elfman yelled in surprise and fear.
"Is it just me, or is it running even faster?!" Bixlo questioned. He was right, it was running faster. In fact, it tried picking up Wendy's horse, which was the closest.
"AAAaghghgh!" Wendy screamed, she tried whipping her reigns even harder to get her horse to move faster. Gajeel, who was nearby, pulled his horse to the right. He was going to circle behind the Intelligent and see if slicing its legs would help slow it down. He whipped out his swords and came close it its feet. He reached out his sword and swung violently against the Titan's foot, but it didn't do much. The titan just healed itself, which pissed him off. That slice just shrunk his blade like a nail filer. Gajeel pulled his horse between the Titan's two legs; an idiotic move. Gajeel pulled his other sword and gave it a swing, only this time contact with the beast's leg broke off the blade. Crud.
"No one's looking..." Gajeel said to himself as he watched the others keep their eyes in front of them and some on the monster's face. Gajeel though a moment. If I don't do it, there's a risk that someone is going to die. If I do do it, there's a risk of being found out... He struggled in thought.
"Aaaghghgh!" a scream was heard, the beast was trying to grasp Levy's horse. The look of fear on her face made him make a decision hastily.
He quickly formed a massive nail spike and aimed it at the Intelligent's foot. It was going up and down, up and down. Gajeel breathed in, trying to calm his shaking arm. He couldn't miss this. He shot the iron nail spike successfully into the foot, causing the beast to fall. Gajeel cracked his whip so hard that it snapped; his horse cried loudly and charged at an incredible speed. Barely missing getting squished by the titan, Gajeel made it back to the rest of the group.
"Are you alright?" He asked Levy.
"Yeah, thanks" She smiled in ease. She knew what he did.
"IT TRIPPED!" Bertolt yelled joyfully. "We have an advantage!"
The Intelligent struggled getting free from the nail that not only dug through its foot, but also the ground. It roared loudly before giving up. Meanwhile, the squadron made their way back behind the safety of the walls.
***Later That Night***
The cool, night breeze gently danced through the campground. Crickets and other insects played their harmonious night song.
"It doesn't make sense." Hanji said. There was a leaders meeting in Erwin's office. Attending were (obviously) Erwin, Hanji, Levi, Mike, and Erza. "It was eating."
"Eating?" Erza didn't see couldn't see why that was wrong.
"Titan's don't need to eat. If they do, they go after humans. They don't have any gestational intestines." Mike informed.
"Why humans?" She asked more.
"I suppose it's necessary we tell you." Erwin said. "We have a theory. However, this is a highly classified theory." Erza nodded. "We believe that titans consume humans because they are trying to consume titanshifters. Titanshifters are those who have the ability to turn into one of them. If they are to eat a shifter, then they are able to turn back into humans."
Erza was mortified. "So there is no reason for them to eat anything else."
"Yeah." Hanji confirmed. "But this titan was eating a deer and a buzzard, like it was a meal. But still, there were no genitals..." Hanji couldn't puzzle out why it had to eat.
A moment of thoughtful silence filled the room. Everyone pondered at the topic, trying to think of possible reasons for why it acted differently.
"It is getting rather late. Let's call it a night." Erwin dismissed. "and Hanji," She turned to face her commander. "It may seem that we may need to do more research."
After the Meeting:
Erza and Mike walked together down the hallway. Erza didn't know why, but Mike had wanted to escort her back to her room. It was awkward at first, because neither of them said a word as they walked, but then Mike finally broke the silence.
"We greatly appreciate you and friends willingness to help us." He said, not looking at her though.
"Ah, you're welcome." She didn't face him either. They approached her room door. Just when Erza was about to tell him goodnight, he gently picked up a lock of her copper-brown hair.
"Your hair has a pleasant sent." He let go. "Goodnight." He turned on his heels and walked away like nothing happened.
What? Erza stood there even more confused.
***Somewhere In a Secluded Location***
"hmmm~ so it seems that there is demon blood here." The voice said happily. "That makes my job a lot easier." The anonymous figure approached the teleorb and began viewing all the recruits. Some were awake and chatting, but most of them were asleep.
"Now, which one are you?"
