Chapter 13
I'm back :3. If you didn't notice, chapter 12 was crammed full of Doctor who references. That's just because there are 12 doctors. People ask me why? I say why not? I was gonna have John Simm instead of Duncan Simm but I figured the Master has killed enough people already.
Castiel's POV
I glanced at Garth as he knocked on the door of the Temple household.
"Who is it?" A women's voice replied almost immediately.
"FBI, we're here to ask you a few questions," Garth said easily.
The door opened quickly a girl with ginger hair stood there, looking confused, "What for?"
"A couple of years ago you witnessed an accident… we're just looking into again, to see if it could be connected to these recent deaths," Garth continued.
She nodded slowly but didn't move aside to let us through.
"Um… my name is Agent Pond and this is Agent Carter, could we come in?" I said.
She nodded, "I'm Donna, if you don't know that already," she whispered and stepped aside to let us in. She closed the door then walked into the living room where she sat down and motioned for us to do as well.
"So, Donna… Can you tell us exactly what happened the day you saw Werthun Agriculture burn down?" Garth asked.
Donna laughed, "I told this already but I'll tell it again, I was walking home and I saw two young men fleeing the burning building. I recognized one of 'em as Thomas Maracas. The other one I'd never seen before."
"Was there any fire trucks there when you saw it all happen?"
She shook her head, "They were coming, I could hear the sirens."
"And, before you saw the men running off did you see anything or hear anything…?"
She nodded very slowly, "I did hear what could've been gun shots but also just the fire, falling wood, things like that."
"Could you explain exactly how you came across the fire?" Garth asked.
She twisted her mouth, "I heard screams and such, then I could hear the gun shots or whatever they were and I could see some fire over the other buildings. I turned a corner and just saw it… I wasn't much help, but I was very surprised."
I glanced briefly away from my notes and saw Donna wringing out here hands.
"And… what did the two boys do after they fled the building?" Garth continued.
She paused, "They just… stood there… watching it burn after they got far enough away."
"That's all?"
Donna looked down at the table.
"No." She looked up at us, "They didn't ask me this before, They watched it burn and they… shook hands. When the fire trucks pulled around the corner, they pretended to have been running away still. Then the firemen took control and I left. After that, the police interviewed me and everything."
"…They were happy that it was burning?" Garth confirmed.
Donna breathed out, "That's what it looked like. It looked like… They were proud."
Garth looked at me and I looked at him. "Do you know anything about the death of Duncan Simm?"
She wrung out her hands again. "No…"
"Are you sure? There isn't anything that could possible help?"
She looked to the left at an empty wall. "You have to promise me this won't go anywhere."
"We promise," Garth said immediately.
She looked at us in the eye. "Gerard - Duncan's boss - and I had a thing… in high school. It was really serious and we were going to get married… but Gerard had a job proposal and he wanted to move to Illinios, I didn't. Everything for me is here, in Arizona. We fought and he left for a month. I didn't know if he took the offer. Turns out he didn't, but he met this other women, and well… She got pregnant."
She paused and looked down at the floor.
"He showed up at my doorstep and said he was gonna have a kid and it wasn't mine, he said that he was sorry and that maybe… we could stay together… I said no. I didn't want to have a complicated relationship. And plus, the month without him helped me realize that I didn't need him. I never spoke with Gerard after that. I got married, had children, they moved out. I saw Gerard only a month before he killed Duncan. He told me something that, I quote, 'can't trust anyone else with'. He said that his daughter committed suicide and was pressured into it by…"
She sighed, "Duncan was her night prof, he was really hard on her. She was in her 30's, already married to Tom Maracas. Duncan kept telling her about how she was "hopeless" and… "Will never be able to pass her classes." I didn't know Duncan, neither did Gerard, we didn't know if he was going through hard times but Gerard was furious. Duncan had done enough to make Jassa think the only option was to kill herself, and that it was for the greater good. She was Gerard's only child, he couldn't handle it. He told me that day that he was going to confront Duncan because the police didn't believe him."
Donna smiled slightly and whispered, "he said he might not make it out alive. And well, he didn't. I never figured out why Duncan was so horrid to Jassa but Gerard walked straight in and killed Duncan's wife and daughter. Then he was killed. It was a bloody murder and I'll never forgive myself for not stopping Gerard. I just didn't know what to do."
Silence drifted through the room. After about a minute I noticed Donna was crying quietly.
"I- I'm sorry," I whispered.
Donna whipped a tear from her face and said, "It is my fault. All of it, in the end." She leaned back, "Oh it feels so good to say it. I don't care anymore. Take me away for whatever. My life is pointless anyway."
"You're not pointless, Donna. You gave a very important piece of evidence, because of you, no more people will die. Thank you very much." I said.
She didn't answer. Garth and I took that to mean we should go, and we did.
"So how was it her fault?" Garth asked.
"If she had gone with Gerard to Illinois you numb wad." I said.
"Oh, so… I'm assuming Duncan Simm was going through some tough times and his next victim is…"
I looked at Garth, "Gerard's wife, or… Jassa's mom."
"Lets just dig up Duncan and Jassa to be safe," I suggested.
Garth nodded, "sounds good."
I sighed and stretched my back, "can you dig for a bit?" I asked, Garth looked down at me, he shone the flashlight around the gravesite once more then nodded.
He helped me out of the grave and gave me the flashlight as I gave him the shovel. The he hopped down and began to dig.
"Nice, that this is over," I muttered, attempting for some conversation.
Garth shrugged, "Yep, another case finished…"
He dug for another hour or so then hit a hard surface, the coffin of Duncan Simm.
Garth pulled it open then climbed out as I poured gas all over his bones. Garth lit a match and dropped it in two swift moments, the next second, Duncan Simm burst into flames.
We stood there for a moment, then there was a rustling in the bushed behind us, we spun around to see a tall, bulky figure with ruffled hair and eyes that shone silver in the reflection of the fire, dart off into the bushes.
For a moment Garth and I said nothing, standing in shock.
"We should go," Garth said and I nodded, we quickly gathered up our stuff and jogged over to the car where we climbed in and drove off back to the hotel, having already burned the remains of Gerard's daughter, Jassa.
We heard no news of any more deaths in the area, but we stayed there for another week till we found another hunt in Nevada. We also never saw the tall thing in the bushes for the rest of the week in Mesa. Of course, then, was when we thought it was a ghost.
I think I'm gonna put this story on hiatus. I'll have a new chapter by next year. As in, January 2016. I can't balance all these things I'm doing now along with this story. Especially since I'm getting no reviews, I don't know if anyone is still reading this.
See you guys in January
