Chapter 22: The Preclude of Happiness

17 years ago, Spring…

"What? What's wrong oyaji?" Shippo shift back to his form, following Sesshomaru rushing towards the car. "We haven't even given our gifts yet!" He said loudly before the latter shut the car's door. When the fox entered, he saw an expression he only ever saw on him when it comes to Rin—alarm…fear…

"A feeling of…" Sesshomaru slowly started. "…getting pulled to the center of the universe…" He turned his head to the tinted glass of the car's door—to the direction of the shrine. "…to her…"

"Oyaji…don't tell me…" He turned pale. "…you fell in love at first sight with Kagome...?! She's only a baby!"

He didn't seem fazed by the accusal, his face remained facing the door. "No." Ever so slightly, he turned his head in disagreement. "It is nothing of that sort." But then Shippo saw him shifted to looking at his reflection on the glass. "My heart is with Rin…and she took it with her on her grave." He said finally.

It became quiet for a moment before Shippo broke it. "But…she's long gone. She's in heaven now…with your son…" The Lord didn't respond so he heaved a long sigh. "So what do you think happened there?"

"This person was cursed."

"Huh? Curse? By who?"

"The hanyou…Inuyasha. He placed a curse on me before he breathes his last breath."

"Sesshomaru…! Brother…! Don't fail me…! You must… you must…! You must take care of her…in my place…! I gave you everything… my powers…my pride…my loyalty…my whole self…! This I ask of you… You must be her protector…a father…a brother…a friend… a lover…or whatever she needs…! Please… please… I will not forgive you if you fail me…!"

"That's insane! Why would he even put a curse on you?"

He shifted on his seat—crossing his legs, leaning his elbow to his right leg, and then tapped his temple. "My foolish brother's strong sense of responsibility and all his regret of not being able to be with her brought out the curse. He always imagined building a family with her…and he loved her until his very last breath."

The air inside the car was solemn for awhile until Shippo recall something.

"I remember he was envious when you, of all yokais…"

"When this person married Rin, a human." He followed almost immediately.

He chuckled. "So that's why he didn't attend the wedding?"

"Nevertheless, Inuyasha asked for forgiveness and sincerely expressed his best wishes after the ceremony. He said his only regret is not being able to see me at my most vulnerable expression." He smirked.

"You mean pure bliss?" Shippo laughed in remembrance. "Wow. I can't believe you're telling me all this oyaji."

At that time, Shippo was not yet adopted into the Dog Clan but he remembered the look on his adopted father's face during the ceremony—he looks like someone who finally got what he wanted all his immortal life. The pleased smile: which you will rarely see adorned his youthful and unblemished face. The eyes with full of pride: which tells everyone that he's proud to marry the woman of her dreams.

Rin, the woman who loves him for who or what he is. The woman who loves his everything—be it his past as a cold-blooded yokai, his present as the ambassador of peace between human and yokais, and his future in which even though she knew she will only be a small part of it, she still chose to be with him.

But their happiness was cut short when the Dog Clan was attacked by a group of yokai that opposed their kind of peace.

It should have been an easy victory for the clan and with the help of Inuyasha's friends except, they chose to attack when it was the most vulnerable time for Sesshomaru—during Rin's labor.

It was too late when other clans came to help.

At that moment, everyone witnessed the fall of Sesshomaru the Daiyokai—on his knees, in front of his wife and newborn son's ashes.

A/N: Heya my dear readers~ how's this chapter? Sorry it was short, but I have to end on that part. I should be glad I've got to finally (yes finally!) reveal Sesshomaru's tragic love life which I planned from the very start but I'm actually not! I'm so sad for even thinking of giving Sesshomaru heartaches but I still wrote this for the sake of the story. TT^TT

Btw! I'd like to clear something about Sesshomaru's pattern of speech because one of the readers graciously reminded me about it. You might notice that his speech of pertaining himself changed from: "this person" or "I/me/myself" but that's just how it is. "This person" is a translated old and formal way of addressing oneself but since he now lives at the modern era, he tried to cope with the modern language because as we all know in this story, he's a businessman and a known entity. Unfortunately for him, old habits die hard—especially if you lived for centuries (like Edward Cullen in Twilight). Shippo is an exception as he was forced to cope up early during his first few years of posing as a human, because you know, he studied in different schools and different countries and often has to be in the presence of humans to make it seem like he's normal.

Though sometimes, I'm just too lazy to think of making his speech pattern more formal and oldish so please forgive me. Ahahahh~
