EMPEROR OF THE WORLD

Sally smiled as she gave Reinette's friends orders to spy on the Monk for her. They would quietly gather evidence against the insidious Time Lord that would show the King exactly what kind of a person that he really was. Then she would have the King execute him, and no one would be any the wiser that she wasn't the real Reinette.

Katherine and Gabrielle left to do as Sally had asked them, but Josette continued to stare at her oddly for some reason. Something about her expression immediately alerted Sally that she suspected something.

"What's wrong, child?" Sally said in her sweetest tone.

"Are you sure that Clara's alright?" Josette asked.

Sally had to force a smile to stay on her face as she felt like screaming at the girl at that moment. Who was this Clara that she kept going on about, and why was she so important to her?

"Yes, Clara's fine. Don't worry about her. She's going to be having a nice relaxing time for a while, and she definitely deserves it don't you think?" Sally said.

Josette frowned as she said, "I suppose so. Do they even have the ingredients for banana pudding where she's going however? You know how much she likes to make it. It's her favorite food."

"Of course they do. Don't worry about it, child. She'll be fine," Sally said in a reassuring tone.

Josette's frown deepened even more at her words for some reason though which started to bother Sally a great deal. Something was wrong. She knew it.

"Do you think that they'll be able to understand Clara's Scottish accent there? It is very thick after all," Josette asked.

She knew now from the way that Josette was acting that she was being tested by her, and she had a feeling that she had just failed an earlier test. She hesitated for a moment as she tried to think of an answer.

That moment of hesitation was all that Josette needed to let her know for sure that this was not Reinette.

The young girl immediately started to run towards the nearest door as Sally hissed in anger and ran after her. She had to stop her before she could tell anyone else what she suspected.

Unfortunately for Sally, Captain Le Fevre was right outside the door when Josette ran out of it. Josette immediately ran to him and started talking to him right away in an extremely upset tone.

"She's not the Marquise, Captain. I don't know who or what she is but that's not her. I think . . . I think that she's killed her and the Baroness," Josette said in tears as she pointed at Sally.

"What?" Le Fevre said in confusion as the girl clung to him tightly and refused to let go.

"Don't listen to her, Captain. Her mind is addled. I'm not sure what's wrong with her, but I think that she may have developed some type of mental disorder," Sally said.

"Ask her about the Baroness, Captain. She keeps saying that she's gone away on vacation and yet she doesn't know anything about her. She doesn't even know what her favorite food is," Josette said.

Le Fevre looked very confused now as he said, "You must be mistaken, Josette. Are you sure that you're feeling well? You could be developing a fever. High fevers can cause all kinds of delusions."

"Perhaps she should be sent back to her parents if she isn't well," Sally suggested.

Le Fevre immediately became suspicious now as he said, "Her parents?"

"See? I told you," Josette said.

"What's so odd about that, Captain? If the girl is sick then where else should she be but at home with her own family?" Sally said.

Le Fevre immediately pulled his sword and stuck it against Sally's throat as he said, "Which of the Marquise's monsters are you, creature, and what have you done with her and the Baroness?"

Sally smiled evilly as she said, "What gave me away?"

"Josette is an orphan. She lost her parents to monsters like you, and the real Marquise has been taking care of her ever since then. What also gave you away was that you weren't concerned about her so-called mental disorder at all whatsoever. The real Marquise would be extremely worried about her," Le Fevre said.

"Reinette sounds entirely too noble for her own good. That's exactly why she's stuck in the past because she was trying to help that redhead go home. That meddling Monk made sure that none of them got to go home though," Sally said.

"So you're suggesting that the King's new weapons maker sent the Marquise and the Baroness into the past?" Le Fevre said with a disbelieving smirk.

"It's the truth, Captain, whether you choose to believe it or not," Sally said.

"No, the truth is that you've done something to them. If you don't tell me where they are right now, then I'll run you through with my sword," Le Fevre said.

"Oh, I'm sure that you'll never see them again unfortunately, Captain. Rutans are notorious for killing whoever they impersonate," The Monk said behind him.

Sally could see that the Monk was with several of the King's guards. She knew now that she was in a great deal of trouble. He had already managed to turn the King against her.

"I didn't do anything! It was him!" Sally protested.

"You were trying to poison the King's mind against me by having Reinette's friends spy on me. Unfortunately for you though I caught the one called Katherine doing it. Her mind was very easy to read for a Time Lord," The Monk said.

"The Monk is a benevolent alien of the Doctor's race who only wishes to help us. That's why you tried to turn the King against him isn't it? You're the Rutan that was sent here to destroy this world. The Marquise told me all about you," Le Fevre said.

"What you say is true but I'm not lying about this. He's even worse than I am. He doesn't just want to destroy you quickly and efficiently like I would have. He wants to pervert your entire history for his own amusement by giving you these weapons," Sally insisted.

"Lies, Captain. All lies. The King knows all about this I assure you, and that's why he sent some of his men with me to take this invader away before she could kill anyone else," The Monk said.

"So the Marquise really is dead?" Josette asked in a frightened voice.

"I'm afraid so and so are her friends the Baroness and the redheaded woman. The Rutan killed them all in order to take Reinette's place. We'll likely never know where their bodies are now," The Monk said with a grave expression.

"I didn't kill them. He sent them to the past," Sally insisted.

Josette wasn't sure what to believe. She found herself almost wanting to believe the Rutan because she didn't want Reinette to be dead. She didn't want to be alone.

"You have your orders from the King himself. Take her to a cell. She'll be kept there until she can be questioned further," The Monk said with a triumphant smile.

As the guards moved towards Sally, she attacked them both with bursts of electricity from her hands knocking them both out cold instantly. Then she quickly did the same to Le Fevre by sending an electric surge through his sword by touching it.

Le Fevre immediately fell to the ground in agony as Sally ran for her life. The Monk meanwhile didn't even try to follow her. His mission was done. He had completely discredited her and successfully passed the blame for Reinette's disappearance off on her at the same time. Now the last person who might have been able to stop him was a wanted fugitive.

The Earth's future belonged to him now.

As the Monk quickly went off to tell the King about his narrow escape from the dangerous Rutan, he didn't notice Josette following Sally. Josette had to know. She had to know if the Rutan was telling the truth or not.

Meanwhile while this was going on the real Reinette along with Clara and Amy suddenly found themselves in the middle of what could have been a king's throne room. Only Reinette had never heard of a king with the initial N at any point in French history, and this throne clearly had that letter covering the top half of it.

She knew right away as soon as she saw this that they still weren't home yet.

"I'm glad to be out of there. It really hurt to see the Rory in that other universe and to know that he wasn't mine," Amy said.

"I still don't know why Clara sent us there instead of home anywhere. We didn't really accomplish that much there if you ask me. All we really did was meet the other you, Jeanne. I still can't believe that she had powers. I bet you were jealous of her, huh?" Clara said with a grin.

"Not really. I prefer myself just as I am, Clara. I don't want to be a Guardian of anything but France," Reinette said.

"So we're finally home now, right? I mean surely the Time Lords of that other universe got it right this time and finally sent us to the right time," Clara said.

"I'd love to thank them for not sending me where I belonged. They insisted that I had to go back with you two though. This really wasn't where I wanted to be. No offense," Amy said.

"Don't worry, Red. Hopefully the crack is still here and you can go back that way. Maybe that's what the Time Lords had in mind," Clara suggested.

"They could have just saved me a lot of trouble and sent me themselves. They're just lazy if you ask me," Amy said in an annoyed voice.

Reinette sighed as she realized that neither of her friends knew what she did yet. It was going to hit them both hard, particularly Amy, when they finally figured it out. She didn't have the heart to tell them though.

"Who are you and how dare you intrude in my private chambers?" An outraged voice suddenly said.

The three women immediately turned to see a man who Amy immediately recognized from her history books standing there with a furious expression on his face. He was staring at them like he wanted to shoot them all right then and there as he continued to demand that they tell him what they were doing there.

"I may not know much about French history but I definitely know Napoleon Bonaparte when I see him. I also know that he was Emperor of the French in the early 1800s. We're in the wrong century . . . again!" Amy said in disbelief.

"Emperor? What happened to the King?" Clara asked in confusion.

Napoleon frowned as he said, "Do you really expect that trick to work on me? You can't feign madness and expect me to grant you mercy for trespassing in my private throne room. You know very well as does everyone else who lived through the Revolution that the royal family was overthrown and executed years ago."

"Executed!" Clara said in horror.

"It happens decades after our time, Clara," Reinette said.

"You knew this?" Clara said in shock.

"Yes, I know almost everything that the Doctor knows so I know exactly what happens to our country in the future just as I know what happens to me as well. I try not to think about it," Reinette said sadly.

"Am I really supposed to believe this fantastical tale that the three of you are from the past? Or are you still going along with the original plan of pretending to be mad in order to evade prosecution?" Napoleon said.

"No, they're from the past. I'm from the future actually," Amy couldn't resist adding with a smile.

Napoleon looked at Amy with great interest now as he said, "Are you like the man who ultimately helped give France complete control of the world then? Are you a Time Lord?"

"Control of the world?" Amy asked in disbelief.

"Don't try to tell me that you don't even know that I, Napoleon, am the Emperor of this entire world," Napoleon said proudly.

"No, you were the Emperor of France and you conquered most of Europe, but you never took over the whole world. Even I know that," Amy said.

Napoleon glared at her as he said, "Yes, I am Emperor of France and therefore Emperor of the entire World. France is the world and I am France. I have achieved what Alexander the Great could only dream of because I have used the armies of France to achieve total domination of everything!"

"That's not possible. How am I still here if you changed history that much?" Amy said.

"You said that a Time Lord helped France gain world dominance? Was this man dressed as a monk and did he give you weapons that were far in advance of their time?" Reinette asked with a sudden feeling of dread in her heart.

That was where she had recognized that strange monk from earlier she now realized. The Doctor knew him.

"See? You do know your history after all. You're not as mad as you pretend. You know just as every person does that the mysterious stranger known only as the Monk gave France so much future technology that our nation had the clear advantage in battle. The revolution against the King slowed down France's long term plans of world domination for a while, but I eventually accomplished that anyway once I took control and rescued us from the chaos that resulted afterwards," Napoleon said with undisguised pride.

"What happened to the Monk? Refresh my memory," Reinette said.

"Why continue to play this game, Mademoiselle? The Monk was executed right alongside King Louis XVI on the guillotine. Even beings from another world can die from being beheaded it seems," Napoleon said.

Reinette looked at him in shock as she realized that the Monk was long gone and yet the damage that he had caused to history was still continuing even in his absence. She couldn't help but wonder herself now why Amy was still there. Why hadn't she been erased or at least altered by what had happened to the timeline?

Maybe time was still in flux though and that's why Amy was still there. Isn't that what the Doctor called it when the future still hadn't been decided yet? She thought that it was.

Maybe that was why the Time Lords had sent them to this twisted future time so that they could see what would happen while they still had a chance to stop it. That prompted the question though of how they could return home in order to do that.

"So what shall I do to you, hmm? How should I punish you for this horrible offense?" Napoleon asked in a playful tone.

The three women didn't like the direction that this conversation was going in at all now as Napoleon looked at them with a lust filled smile.

"I wouldn't punish us at all, Emperor. Not if you want my help that is. You may have the world after all, but there is so much more than just this world you know. There are so many other worlds out there just waiting for you to conquer them," Reinette said as she thought quickly.

"And how could you possibly help me to leave this world and conquer others?" Napoleon asked intrigued.

"You asked my friend earlier if she was a Time Lord like the Monk. She isn't but you were almost right. She isn't the Time Lord. I am," Reinette said as Clara and Amy both looked at her in surprise.

Napoleon laughed as he said, "Do you really expect me to believe that story?"

"The machine that the Monk used to travel here is called a TARDIS is it not?" Reinette asked.

"How do you know about that? That's been a carefully guarded secret for decades," Napoleon said.

"I know about it because I am one of his own people. I came here looking for him in order to bring him back home. Now that I'm here though maybe I can keep this trip from being a total waste by helping you, Emperor. I can teach you how to fly the Monk's TARDIS if you still have it, and you can use it to help conquer the rest of the universe. You would like that very much I assume?" Reinette asked.

Clara looked at Reinette questioningly as if to say that she had better know what she was doing the entire time that she was talking. As it turned out she did as Napoleon began to smile while his eyes filled with lust of a different kind now . . . for power.

"I do still have his TARDIS. It's in this very room in fact. You've been looking at it this entire time," Napoleon said.

"The throne? You know how to use the Chameleon Circuit?" Reinette asked in surprise.

"Oh, come on! How could someone from the Nineteenth Century figure that out?" Amy said.

"The Monk was forced to teach the knowledge of how to change his ship's form in order to hide it better to Robespierre before he was executed. Unfortunately even Robespierre couldn't drag the secrets of how to pilot the ship out of him. I'm hoping that I won't have to resort to such drastic methods in order to gain your cooperation," Napoleon said to Reinette.

"No, I'll do it willingly. What the Monk did here intrigues me, and I'd like to see it followed through to its natural conclusion. Why shouldn't France conquer the universe as well as the world?" Reinette said.

"Exactly. Come, Time Lord. I'll let you inside of the ship and you can show me exactly how it works," Napoleon said eagerly as he produced a key from a necklace that had been hidden around his neck.

Napoleon quickly unlocked the door and led the three of them inside the disguised TARDIS with him. Amy saw immediately that the Console Room was similar in its basic design and yet completely different from the Doctor's at the same time.

"Now show me how to make this ship travel in time," Napoleon said.

"It's called dematerialization, Emperor, and I'll need the key in order to make it work," Reinette said.

Napoleon frowned as he said, "Do you think me a fool? If I hand you the key, I'll be entirely at your mercy."

"If you don't, then you'll never learn how to pilot the ship will you?" Reinette said.

"Very well," Napoleon said with a sigh as he gave Reinette the key.

"Thank you very much," Reinette said as she pretended to be inserting the key into a panel on the console.

Then she suddenly whirled around and used her sonic pen on Napoleon. Before the Emperor could even begin to stop her, she had already knocked him out cold with it.

"Clara, Amy, help me drag him outside. Quickly before the guards come!" Reinette ordered.

As the three women dragged him out of the TARDIS doors, Amy complained, "I thought he was supposed to be short. It would have certainly helped if he was. There would be less to carry."

"That's a common mistake according to the Doctor's memories," Reinette said.

"You know it's very weird and a little unsettling how you know so much about the future, Jeanne," Clara said.

"It's going to get even weirder in a moment, Clara," Reinette said as she gestured to them to follow her back into the TARDIS.

Reinette raced to the console and started to activate controls as Clara looked at her in shock.

"You really do know how to take us home? I thought you were bluffing," Clara said in disbelief.

"I remember a little from the Doctor's memories. I don't think that it's enough, but I'm going to try. It's our only way home now," Reinette said.

"I think that I can help with what you don't know. I learned a lot about how to fly the Doctor's TARDIS while I was with him," Amy offered.

"Maybe that's why you were brought to us," Reinette said.

"You're saying that this was supposed to happen then? That I was supposed to be here in order to help you save the world from this evil Time Lord?" Amy asked.

"It could be," Reinette said.

"Just once I'd like to believe that something about time travel could make sense like that. It never has before after all," Amy said with a grin.

Then both of them fell silent as they worked together to pilot the TARDIS back to Reinette and Clara's own time. Using their combined knowledge, they actually managed to bring the ship back to the exact day that they had been sent back to the past through the crack.

Amy smiled in triumph as she said, "We did it! Are we good or what, Queenie?"

"If I'm reading the instruments right, we're here just a few hours after we left. Hopefully the Monk hasn't had time to cause too much damage," Reinette said.

"I guess we'll find out in a minute, Jeanne," Clara said.

The three of them then went outside only to be immediately stopped by an entire force of Musketeers. They all aimed their guns at them as they gave them evil looks.

"We've finally found you at last, Monster. So there are more of you impersonating the Baroness and her friend as well are there? You won't be able to carry out your plans against the King now because now you're all going to die. Kill them!" The leader of this group of Musketeers ordered.

"Something tells me that you might just be wrong about him not causing much damage, Jeanne. Mind you. It's just a hunch. I could be wrong," Clara said as the Musketeers started to aim for their heads.

Next: Reinette and Clara are finally home just in time to die it seems. Will they be able to get out of this one in time? Even if they do, can they stop the Monk and prevent the twisted future that they saw from occurring? Plus where did Josette and Sally go to anyway?
