LA Girl
-Chapter four-
(I'm sorry this took so long I'm going through some personal problems but I love to hear from all of you so please don't hesitate to comment please! I hope you enjoy the new chapter. The definitions of some names and words I used they are Irish decent.
Aedan (traditional Irish name for boys): A diminutive form of the name Aed meaning "fire" and would imply "born of fire."
Uncail: Uncle
Caitlin (Traditional Irish name for girls): Devotion to St. Catherine came to Ireland with Christianity. Revered for her courage and purity. In a time of famine the Devil offers food to the starving poor in exchange for their souls, Cathleen convinces Satan to take her soul instead. When she dies the Devil comes to collect her soul but God intervenes and carries Cathleen to heaven, saying that "such a sacrificial act cannot justly lead to evil consequences.")
Kevin pulled up his ripped black skinny jeans making sure his white singlet got tucked into his pants. He let out a heavy sigh as he stuffed his notebook into his black backpack making sure he had all his homework and extra pencils, Kevin had a bad habit of either breaking or losing his pencils. After putting his things together he went into his closet looking for t-shirt finding a slim black and red Three Days Grace band shirt and his red cap. Taking one good look at his room making sure he had everything he reached down and grabbed his Doc Martens and open his door. The smell of bacon alerting him that his mother was awake.
She isn't supposed to be cooking it had to be her it was still a little early for the nurse to be here. Kevin ran down the hall and slide down the banister of the stairs landing with a loud thud.
"KEVIN AEDAN BARR how many times have I told ya to stop sliding off those things lad!?" He was surprised to see her in a summer dress an apron over it, one hand on her hip the other one tapping her fingers consistently on the counter top. Her hair wild and red curls flowing down to her hips.
"Ma you sure you should be cooking?" He laughed a little at the Irish tang that deepened when she would yell at him. She stiffened at the question turning back to the food she was preparing. Maybe he shouldn't have asked.
"Ay I'm sure….I…I did it again didn't I…?" Her voice cracked at the end making Kevin wince, he hated seeing her like this.
"Don't worry bout it Ma it's not your fault" It wasn't, that fucking nurse shouldn't have left her alone until he got back that night and she just kept instigating her mother's illness, She had three attacks that week alone. He decided for sure that since the term was over he could change the nurse. He was going to have to see the lead doctor after school and then head to work.
"Look I gotta head to school okay but Uncail will be here later to take care of you. I'll be home late." Kevin saw the fear in his mother's eyes and walked closer to her.
"I'm not going anywhere Ma I'm going to school then work then straight home. Remember I gave you my number you can call me whenever alright?" He wrapped his arms around her petting her hair. Over the years he had come to realize how small and frail this body was, which hurt him more realizing that this small frail person protected him from all those blows.
"You are most definitely right son! I am Caitlin O'Conner the bravest and fiery of lasses and I will not let this beat me!" She rose her tiny fist in defiance as she spoke. Kevin couldn't help but smile at her he bent down and kissed her check grabbing a handful of bacon and ran off out the door hearing his mother scold him on table manners. He jumped onto his bike placing his helmet on as he drove away. He caught a glimpse of his mother waving at him from the driveway, then he saw the nurse come by and push her back inside. Yea Kevin was going to get that bitch changed.
He reached the school teeth obviously clicking away at each other, big Idiot that he was he forgot his sweater at home but luckily he had a leather jacket in his locker. He always kept extra close in his locker for emergencies, he put his keys in his pocket and headed towards the school building. Jogging helped rise his temperature he mentally took note to buy himself something warm to drink later. He needed to make sure he didn't get sick, he couldn't afford to miss school or work not if he wanted to get ahead of the game. Kevin laughed at himself he sounded like such a dork who would have guessed.
At reaching his locker Kevin heard some voices coming down the hall he turned his head towards the direction of the sound to see the principal and the dork. She had her hair in half pigtails her beanie on her head like usual, she was wearing dark purple overall shorts and black leggings with cat skulls and bones decorated all over. Oh? And what's this? The dork was wearing glasses and she looked adorable in them, it seemed kind of obvious that she would need glasses, being the dork that she is. Kevin always imagined her reading into the night straining her eyes to see the pages before her.
Kevin closed his locker, after retrieving his jacket, attracting their attention and began to walk towards them.
"Morning Principal Henry, Edd what's new?" Kevin greeted the principal shaking his hand and then nodding to Edden.
"Kevin my boy! Do you know the new student?" He said crumbs falling out of his mustache. This was normal the principal always had a muffin in his hand, he was actually surprised not to see one in his hands today.
"Quite well I'm unfortunate to say Barr here and I grew up in the cul-de-sac together until my departure to California." She stepped away from the principle to Kevin it was apparent that she was grossed out by the crumbs. Kevin rolled his eyes at her and held in his laughter as much as he could he could sense how uncomfortable she was. He wrapped his hands around his chest trying to keep warm his skin was still cold as ice.
"If you like Principle I'll show her around not a big deal" Kevin offered.
"That would be delightful! Since you two know each other I'm sure you will feel comfortable Ms. Vincent" She nodded vigorously at him "Besides who better to show you around than our star Captain here!" He reached over to shake her hand and Kevin noticed the large lump she gulped as she forced herself to shake his hand. After the hand shake he spun on his short chubby legs and waddled back to his office.
The dork still had the fake smile plastered on her face. Kevin swung his bag over and pulled out a small hand sanitizer container. He tapped Edden's shoulder bringing her attention towards him.
"Here" He grabbed her pale hand and squirted some in her palm. She stared blankly at him one brow raised in confusion; he laughed and grabbed her other hand and pushed them together.
"Like this air head" She looked down and huffed.
"Oh let go I can manage!" she said pink coloring her cheeks.
"Didn't seem like it genius" He said laughing.
"It shouldn't be that hard even a simpleton like you can execute such an elementary task." She frowned and felt a little guilty being so mean.
"Well someone got up on the wrong side of the bed today even after I went out of my way to save you from an uncomfortable situation for yourself." He scuffed and started to walk ahead. Nothing was going to bring him down his mom was feeling better and he was ready for his baseball games. He heard her chucks squeak on the floor as she caught up to him.
"He's actually a really nice guy ya know" He offered.
"Kind or not that does not excuse his un-kept hygiene how very unsanitary!" She gave herself chills just thinking about it. Kevin broke out in laughter he remembered how she used to scream that out at every little thing when they were kids.
"Haha come on hand me your class schedule" he asked still laughing, extending his hand toward her.
"What so funny?" she handed him a small piece of paper. The paper had her first period Physics, then AP Calculus, Honors English, AP Art History, AP US History, and French.
"Nothing forget it, so we have the same first period I'll take you" Actually they had many classes together the few differences was instead of AP Art History he had Advance Robotics, instead of French he had Japanese, and instead of calculus he had AP Statistics. She followed him and as they walked Kevin pointed out her other classes, the lunch area, and bathrooms.
"Nobody usually shows you where the bathroom is and its one of the most important places" He said seriously "I mean when you have to go you gotta go right?"
Edden was rolled her eyes and laughed she opened her mouth to respond when a group of guys came over Edden only recognized plank and Rolf. One of the boys came close knocking Kevin's hat off his head wrapping his arm around his shoulders.
"The Hell Andy!" Kevin caught his cap before it fell to the floor. He turned pushing his arm away.
"Hey Cap' what the heck are you doing?" He was intensively staring at Edden. Kevin stepped in front of her and pushed Andy's face away.
"Back up ass geez, Edden this is Andrew, Dave, and Frank. Guys this is Edden she's part of the cul-de-sac so hands off got it!" Andrew laughed loud, like he normally did, as if he was up off on a far hill even though they were a few inches away, Edden winced a bit.
"Yea Yea Yea whatever Cap'n, Anyway you can call me Andy sweetheart" Andrew winked and Edden rolled her eyes at him. Kevin realized she didn't need defending but he wasn't going to stop either way. He stepped closer to her making sure there was something between Andrew and her.
"Class will start soon" She sounded exasperated then the warning bell rang. Kevin gave a sigh of relief as he removed his cap pushed his hair back and returned it to its place.
"Would ya look at that bell rang, see you guys later" Kevin turned to Edden pointing with his thumb which way they had to go. They headed over in silence which didn't bother Kevin it wasn't awkward at all at least not to him. They headed over to class and before entering Kevin grabbed Edden's shoulder.
"What?" She looked at him with her big cyan eyes.
"Look bout Anderson, just…stay away from that guy…he tends to be forceful when he likes something or someone." Kevin wasn't one to pry into people's lives but he has had to save two or three girls from Andy's drunken stupor before.
"I assumed so, forgive me but he just rubbed me the wrong way" She turned away scrunching her face.
"Don't worry bout it come on let's take our seats" He walked in and sat in his usual seat near the window in the back. He stretched out in his seat as Edden sat in the front like she usually did. She watched as Kevin threw his backpack up on his desk, wrapped his arms around the bag, and lowered his head. Edden scuffed and turned around once a spoiled child always a spoiled child. He always thought he could get away on his good looks and popularity but once he reaches the real world he will fall. It made her a little sad for him.
A woman came in short stubby, her skirt reaching her ankles swaying as she waddled to the front. Her short urban hair spiked out in sharp curls all over her head, she pushed up her sharp ended glasses as she took a sweep look at the students noticing Edd in the group.
"You must be Edden Marian Vincent our new fabulous student I'm Ms. Frost" She walked up to Edd gleaming at her with her hazel grey eyes. Her smile sweet and growing on her face. Edd felt she was going to like this woman.
It was nearing the end of class and Edden had enjoyed every bit of it they had done simple enough equations that would confuse most but was simple to her. A little bit of practice and Edden was sure to have it down flat. She noticed throughout the class that Kevin either had his head down or was staring out the window, and now she wasn't the only one who had noticed. Ms. Frost had a white board marker twirling between her fingers, she called out to Kevin who was doodling in his notebook. He didn't answer, suddenly the marker was making its way to Kevin's red cap on his head, the impact made him jump in his seat.
"If you would like to join us Kevin I would like you to answer number 9 please" Kevin stared wide eyed at her then turned to the board a little nervous.
"A pilot flies from City A to City B. City B is a distance d due east from City A. Suppose the plane has airspeed vPA and encounters a northerly wind with speed vAE. (a) Solve for the flight time, t, and the required heading of the airplane, θ, in terms of other relevant variables. (b) Repeat this problem but now allow for a wind with an arbitrary direction, φ. So what is the answer Kevin? Bring the marker up and write the answer." Ms. Frost wrapped her arms around her chest glaring at Kevin through her glasses.
Kevin sighed and walked up to the board uncapping the marker and immediately writing the answer without hesitation. He handed the marker back to his teacher and walked back to his desk.
"Very good Kevin it seems you were paying attention!" At that the bell rang and all the students began to rustle with their things and walk out the door. Edden took her time filing away her notes in the proper order and location, she waited till the stampede of students had jammed themselves through the door.
"Don't forget your homework!" Ms. Frost yelled out to the students as they ran off. Kevin was one of the firsts to go and Edden threw her bag over her shoulder and speed up to catch him. When she stepped out of the door Kevin was waiting for her by the lockers, he was yawning as he stretched his arms up lifting his shirt revealing some of his muscles.
"So want to tell me when you became sufficiently intelligent?" Edden blushed at the exposure but seemed to pull off an unfazed expression. Kevin turned to her his face stern, Edden was worried she had hurt his feelings but then his eyes softened and his lips stretched into a smile.
"There is a lot you don't know about me Ms. Vincent and I would greatly appreciate it if you didn't treat me like an imbecile." Kevin smirked at her while sticking his hands in his pocket. Edden was about to say something when she felt someone pull her arm behind her.
"Alright shovel chin, we got it from here you can leave our princess to us beat it!" Edden nearly tripped as she was pulled away she never knew how strong Eddy was, of course it was bound to happen they aren't children anymore. She turned to look at Kevin with an apologetic look and she saw Kevin with his arms crossed shaking his head then waving mouthing out a 'later'.
"Eddy you may cease your dragging of my person please." She tugged at her arm gaining his attention but he didn't stop walking and he didn't let go of her.
"Eddy I must implore you—"
"To what!? Let you hang out with that fucker?! Damn it Double Dee you didn't learn from the first time did you?!" Eddy yelled at her gaining the attention of the many students around them. At the moment she didn't care about the many eyes what Eddy had said affected her more than others opinions, and frankly pissed her off.
"Who I choose to surround myself with is my own choice you do not own me Eddy! You will do well to remember that" She glared down at him; best friend or not he had no right to treat her this way. He had no right to throw what happened back then in her face, she didn't forget and she didn't forgive Kevin not completely. She was still waiting for an explanation. An explanation she wondered if it would even come.
Eddy stared back his anger subsiding, he always let his temper get the best of him.
"I'm sorry Double Dee…I didn't mean to piss you off really. I …I just don't want you to get hurt again." Eddy lowered his face pouting as he slid his hands into his pockets. Edden sighed shaking her head.
"Forget it let us proceed to class shall we?" Eddy nodded and took Edden to her class in silence. The rest of the day went without a hitch it turned out the she had multiple classes with Kevin. She had learned that he was at the top of the class in each one, not only that but he was ranked number one in their class group. She was stunned to say the least and now was walking out of school with him.
"Let me get this straight you have Physics, AP Statistics, Honors English, Advance Robotics, AP US History, and lastly Japanese, plus you have Baseball practice am I right?" Edden counted the classes with her fingers to make sure they had the same amount of classes.
"Yeeeaaa and I work when I can and volunteer at the library." Kevin laughed at Edden's surprised expression.
"Where do you find the time—" Kevin's phone rang the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance chiming away. With an apologetic look he answered the phone with a worried 'hello'.
"Hello...Hello?" The sound of glass breaking ripped out of the phone then screaming, Kevin's eyes widened his face getting paler by the seconds and then he was off. He ran out without a word and disappeared on his bike. Edden just stood there by the steps in front of the school building feeling her heart contract just like many years before unable to do anything.
