Chapter 3: The Pale Orc and Battle of the Lone Warg

They were setting up camp for now, Oin and Gloin starting up a campfire, the other dwarves resting up. Gandalf was smoking with one of his pipes, Bilbo feeding the horses with the apples he brought along. Lily was writing down in her journal, but was sketching some of the things they saw during the way before camping for the night. Lily smiled at her father, always knew that he had a soft spot for animals like she did.

They heard a howl yell from the distance and Bilbo stiffed, hearing the sound. "W-What was that?"

Lily saw how Kili and Fili were snickering and walked up to Bilbo and Lily rolled her eyes at them. "Orcs." Kili answered. "There are dozens of them out there." Fili said as Kili was silently snickering.

"You think that's funny?"

The three stiffed when they saw Thorin walking up. "Do you think that a night raid by orcs is a joke?" He growled, making Fili and Kili have their head lows in guilt. "We didn't mean anything by it." Kili said and Thorin went over to the cliff. "You know nothing of the world." He said, then stared at the horizon.

"...don't you think that's a bit harsh?" Lily asked, but Balin placed a hand on her shoulder. "Don't mind him, lass. Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs." He said, then looks over at Thorin, who wasn't staring at them. "After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain, King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria...but our enemy had gotten there first."

"...the orcs..." Lily whispered, making Balin nods

"Aye...Moria had been taken by legions of orcs, lead by the most vile of all their race...Azog the Defiler." Lily seemed to gulp at the name, now somewhat nervous and scared of the Orc. "The giant Gundabad orc had sworn to wipe out all the lines of Durin." Lily looks over at Thorin, who still had their back to them, but she knew that he was hearing Balin telling the story.

"...defeat, and death, were upon us...King Thror...was killed by Azog." Balin's head was low. Lily felt guilt inside of her, then looks at Thorin. '...that must've been hard for him...'

"Thorin stood alone, wielding nothing but a oaken branch as a shield, fighting against the pale orc." Lily looks at Balin. "...what happened?"

"...Azog, had been defeated...and I thought to myself...there was one, I could call King." He looks at Thorin as he returned to the group. "What happened to the pale orc?" Bilbo asked and Thorin walked passed him. "He died of his wounds long ago." He then noticed how Lily was really looking at him now and sighed, walking over to him.

Lily suddenly felt his hand on the top of her head and she looks up at him, since she was still sitting in her spot. "Do not grieve for me. What has happened, happened." He said, then took his hand off of her head and went back to his spot. Lily was a bit surprised, but then sighs. He told her not to grief of him of what happened, but it will be difficult for her.

Lily laid on her side, closing her book and glanced at the campfire before slumber took a hold of her. But all of the dwarves didn't know that two orcs were spying on them, one of them growling as they were riding on Wargs.

"Send word to the Master. We have found the Dwarf-scum." It said in orc tongue and the other orc went off, sending the word to the unknown master.

A twig snapped.

Lily was now wide awake and she sat up, looking around.

Something...or someone...was watching them.

She stood up slowly and went around to search of the unknown figure that was spying on them. She passed by bushes and trees, searching for the source of what woke her up, but was finding nothing. "I could be imagining things..." Lily thought to herself. She was about to head back until she heard a twig snapped again. Lily stops where she was and looks around.

"So I'm not hearing things..." She thought, grabbing a nearby large stick to defend herself with. She looks around, holding the stick close to her to defend herself if something did attacked her-

She was tackled from behind and Lily managed to whatever it was on it's side with the stick the hardest she could muster and it got off of her and she stilled, seeing it was a Warg. It was a darkish grey, some of the fur turning white due to age and it had battle scars among it's body, which it also like it just got out a fight as blood was trailing down from it's wounds it received. The Warg's mouth was filled with foam, growling at Lily and was baring it's sharp teeth, ready to attack her.

She found her legs frozen on the spot, unable to move.

'Move, Lily! DO SOMETHING YOU IDIOT!' She thought. She then managed to get the feeling back in her feelings and ran away from the Warg, which it starts to chase after her. Lily winced when a small twig from a tree scratched her cheek, but she kept running away from the lone Warg, which was catching up to her very quickly, since it was much larger than most average wargs.

Lily past through the trees of forests and found herself by a cliff and she looks around, trying to find a way around the cliff, but could not. The Warg jumped through the bush and growled at her, slowly advancing up to her. With each step it took, Lily shook more, holding the stick the tightest she could muster until her knuckles starts to turn white.

She had to think of something. Or she will end up dead.

The Warg tackles her and Lily managed to let it bite down on the stick when it tackled her to the ground. It was growling and snarling, trying to get to her but the stick stood between it and her neck for it to bite on to end her life. Lily struggled to get the large beast off of her, but it was larger and heavier than her, so she was struggling with the Warg.

She kept trying to kick it's stomach, which it grunts, but refuse to get off of her.

Then with all the strength she could muster, she kicked it's stomach and it yelped in pain, getting off of her and it growled again, glaring at her with it's blood-shot eyes. Lily stood up and held the stick tightly to her again, shaking.

'Come on...Come on...'

It crouched down, ready to pounce on her for the final blow.

It then jumped at her-

She ducked and kicked it's stomach, making it stumble down the edge of the cliff, but when Lily thought she had finished the Warg, it grabbed her boot with it's teeth, dragging it down to the edge of the cliff with her and she held onto the edge of the cliff, the Warg dangling while holding onto Lily's foot with it's teeth.

Lily tries to kick it off of her, the weight of the Warg too much for her as she slowly starts to slide from the edge of the cliff. 'No, no, NO!' She thought, trying to grip onto the cliff. She slowly starts to lose her grip and she starts to fall-

A hand grasped hers and she looks up at the source, but was surprised to see Thorin.

"Thorin!"

"Hold on!" He shouted, having a hold of her hand and she grasp his hand. The warg kept a hold of Lily's foot as she kept trying to kick it off of her foot. She then managed to kick it off of her and it fell to it's doom.

Thorin used both of his hands to grasp Lily's hand and starts to pull her up from the cliff. They were both gasping as Lily looks at Thorin, who was also trying to catch his breath.

"Thorin, I-"

"Do not stray from the campsite again." He said and she looks at him and then nods. He then looks at her again. "Are you injured? Did it hurt you?" He asked, knowing that the warg must have injured her from her struggle.

"I think I just bruised my arm with it tackled me, but I think that's it."

"Can you stand?"

She nods and slowly starts to stand up, but immediately regrets it when a shot of pain rose into her ankle and nearly fell, but Thorin caught her fall. He made her sit down and looks at her ankle, where there were holes from the Warg's teeth and yet there was no blood, due to the fact that the boot was made of tough leather, which she should be grateful that it wasn't worse.

"...no injuries, but it may have dislocated your ankle. I can get Balin to set it back into place when we get back to the campsite." He said, helping her stand up and let her lean against him. "Thorin-"

"I'll be fine. It's you that needs medical attention." He said, helping her walk back to the campsite. "...I thought you didn't like me..." She said.

"It is my responsibility to make sure that everyone is well and safe, including you and the Hobbit." He said. They soon made their way to the campsite and Thorin helps her sit down, waking up Balin. Thorin then gives Lily a cloth for her to bite down on as Balin gently grabbed her ankle. "On three..."

Lily nods, closing her eyes as she bit down on the cloth gently. "One..."

Lily clench her eyes shut, getting ready for the worse.

"Two..."

Thorin held her shoulders so that she won't struggle when Balin sets her ankle back in place.

"Three."

Balin sets her ankle back in place and Lily muffled a yell through the cloth, biting down on it and Thorin held her in place. She was thrashing slightly, but he held her in place in order to keep her calm.

She was soon gasping and shaking in pain, clenching her eyes shut as a tear of pain ran down her cheek. "You're alright, lass. You did very good." Balin pats her shoulder as she was taking deep breaths to ignore the pain that shot through her ankle and leg.

"Easy now..." She heard Thorin said, patting her back of how she managed to hold still the best she could. He then nods at Balin, thanking him and Balin nods back at him and went back to his resting spot. He then looks down at Lily, who was still taking deep breaths to calm herself.

"Rest now. Balin will check for your injuries in the morning." He said, earning a nod from Lily. He pats her back once more and he walks back to his usual spot-

"Thorin?"

He looks back at Lily and she looks at him. "...thank you. For saving my life."

He nods at her. "You are welcome. Now rest."

She nods and laid on her side, using the cloak she had to cover herself up to her shoulders and closed her eyes, sighing. It was a bit later when Lily felt something go over her shoulders and she cracked an eye open to see Thorin going back to his spot and she saw his cloak over her shoulders and she smiled a bit. She closed her eyes, letting slumber take over her.

This is Chapter Three of Pure Heart.

In the next Chapter, they encounter the trolls and Lily founds out that she is more than what she appears to be, but doesn't understand why or how, which Gandalf may have the answer or the Brown Wizard Radagast, but he may know someone that may hold the answer to Lily's past, but is still in the unknown.

Until then,
