Here is Chapter Eleven is here!
In this chapter, Lily will try to convince the dragon Smaug to leave the Mountain. Will she succeed? Or will Lake Town will be his target of destruction? I am adding things into this chapter, because it took me a lot of thinking of how to do this chapter.
So here we go!
Chapter Eleven: Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities
Lily enters the treasure room and it was bigger than she imagine...
...MUCH more bigger.
She could see hills of treasure in the very large room. She could see golden coins, jewels and many of objects that were in gold. No wonder how Dwarves were know to be the richest kind of Middle Earth. She took a deep breath and she starts to look around. "...okay...Smaug...how hard can it be to find him in this room?" She asked, slowly and as quiet as she could, walked into the treasure and look for the fire drake, Smaug.
She hoped that she could calm and convince Smaug to leave the Mountain.
Few hours later...
"...okay, this is ridiculous...how can you lose a large dragon in a large treasure room!?" She huffed in frustration, sitting down while she tried to think things through of how to search for him easier-
A large snort from a snout was heard from her right and she stilled.
She saw a large snout beside her, the gold shifting beside it and she saw...the closed eyes of the large dragon, Smaug. She gasped and hid behind the pillar and then slowly poked her head out to look at him. His eyes were still closed, so he was still asleep. She was about to step away from him, but then saw the tail of the dragon to her left and she stilled.
She looks between the head to his tail and she tried to figure out the measures of the dragon...
...because Smaug was MUCH larger than what she expected. She had to think as she sat down, thinking things through, but she didn't saw the head shifting closer to her and that's when she saw it and slowly stood up, slowly walking away from him-
His golden fire eye starts to open and she dove down into hiding, gasping. Smaug looks around, half of his head still buried into the golden treasure of the Lonely Mountain. She was in deep trouble because she was alone in the room with Smaug and she felt him rising above the gold and she shape-shifted into a Changewing, a camouflage dragon and changed her skin to match the gold as Smaug rose up from the gold.
He sniffed the air and growled softly and Lily stood up, still camouflaged with the gold and Smaug was looking at where she was at.
"...well?" Smaug growled, sniffing the air. "THIEF?" His voice was deep and spine chilling that it made Lily shiver a bit, but kept hidden through her disguised dragon form, camouflage within the gold. Smaug's head was near her, smelling the air.
"I smell you. I hear your breath." Lily crouched down even more, the dragon's head above her by merely inches as he kept looking around for the thief. "I feel your air..." Smaug turned his head, his tail slamming softly against the gold. "Where are you?" He growled softly, looking until she felt that he was staring straight at her.
"Where ARE YOU?" His snout was merely inches of where Lily was and she panicked and ran the fastest she could muster away from him and Smaug growled, baring his teeth when he saw the gold moving on its own. Someone was in here with him and growled louder. He chased at whatever was in there and Lily's heart raced against her chest when she hid behind a pillar, changing her skin to keep her hidden from the large dragon that snaked his head through the gold, his clawed hand above her head.
"Come now..." Smaug chuckled, "Don't be shy." Lily kept hidden where she was, gasping silently as Smaug turned his head. "STEP into the light." Smaug commanded, but Lily kept where she was at, silently gasping. Smaug growled softly, turning his head behind the pillar at where she was hiding at, then he hummed in thought.
"There is...something about you..."Smaug said and Lily looks over at where Smaug was, but she couldn't really see him until she heard him from behind and she stilled, seeing him. "Something within you...something from a fire...but far...more...PRECIOUS." Lily shook her head when the word 'precious' was echoing in her head, but it was getting louder and a vision of an eye that burned with flames flashed in front of her and she turned normal gasping.
Then she saw herself staring at the fiery golden eye of the Fire Drake, Smaug and she stilled a bit, gasping.
"There you are, THIEF, in the shadows." Smaug growled, his eye looking up and down at the tiny mortal girl and Lily visibly gulped, taking a shaky breath.
"I-I did not come to steal from you, Oh Smaug, the Unassessably w-wealthy. I-I merely want to gaze upon your magnificence...to see," Smaug's pupil somewhat turn widen, but it still remained slit at her. "If you really were great as the old tale say." She gulped again. "I-I did not believe them." She whimpered a bit.
Smaug growled, as if he was offended by the words and slowly turned around to look at the girl, standing tall with his chest puffed up and stood proudly in front of her. "And do you NOW?" His voice echoed through the entire treasure room. "Truly..." Lily trailed off, gulping of the large size of the dragon that was three times bigger than any other dragon she had seen, probably bigger than the Bewilderbeast, Vordoom in the Dragon Sanctuary.
"Th-The tale and songs...fall utterly short...of your enormity, Oh Smaug...the Stupendous." Lily complimented to the large Fire Drake.
"Do you think flattery will keep you alive?" The dragon asked and Lily stilled a bit.
"N-No, no."
"No indeed."
Smaug growled, still looking down at the puny mortal girl that stood in front of him and then turned slightly, walking slowly up to the girl. "You seem familiar with my name, but I don't remember smelling your kind before. Who are you," He raised an eyelid at her, tilting his head, "And where did you come from, may I ask?" Smaug asked. Lily was about to answer him, but something caught her eye.
It was the Arkenstone.
The Heart of the Lonely Mountain.
Lily had to get the jewel without the dragon knowing and she also had a task to do and then, she remembered something. "...I come from under the hill."
"Under hill?" He tilted his head, now interested. It was a riddle.
He remembers many of riddles when the tiny mortal girl spoke to him in riddle tongue
Lily nods, now having his attention. She knows that dragons love riddles and if they do, then Smaug likes hearing riddles "And under hills and over hills, my path is led. And...and..." She trails off and Smaug growled a bit, growing impatient of how long she was taking to say the riddle."...through the day and night, I am one that turns to dragon kind." She said, keeping her eyes on the dragon when his head snaked around a pillar.
"Impressive..." Smaug purred and slowly brought his head close to her. "What else do you claim to be?" He asked, growling.
"I-I am..." Her words were lost when the dragon's teeth were merely inches away from her. "L-Lucky number..." She cleared her throat, nearly gagging at the dragon's horrific breath. "Ri-Riddle maker."
"Lovely titles...go on." Smaug somewhat purred.
"Dragon leader."
"Leader? Now that IS interesting." Smaug growled while grinning, pulling his head away and Lily looks at him. "And what about your little dwarf friends? Where are they hiding?" Smaug asked, still grinning evilly and Lily tensed. "D-Dwarves? No? No, no..no dwarves here." She chuckled nervously, "You got that all wrong."
"Oh, I don't think so, DRAGON leader." He hissed at the title, his horns like spines expanded out from his head. "They sent you in here to do their dirty work while they scout about outside." He growled and Lily stood tense. "Truly, you are mistaken, Oh Smaug, Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities." Lily complimented once more, Smaug growling softly at her manners.
"You have nice manners...for a thief...and a LIAR!" Smaug roared and Lily stilled, nearly wincing from the boom of his voice. "I know the smell and taste of dwarf...NO ONE better." Smaug growled. While Smaug wasn't looking, Lily slowly went over to the Arkenstone, the jewel merely at her reach. "It is the gold. They are drawn to treasure like FLIES to dead flesh." Smaug growled, and his clawed hand stomped by Lily, barely missing her and the Arkenstone starts to roll down the pile of gold, making Lily chase it.
"Did you think I did not know this day would come!?" Smaug roared, slamming the side of his head to a pillar, which it cracked from impact. Lily tripped and grunted when she landed, some of the gold landing on her. "That a pack of canting dwarves would come crawling BACK to the mountain!?" Smaug roared in anger, taking down a pillar with his brute strength and the impact of the pillar crashing down echoed through the mountain.
Outside of the mountain, the dwarves and Bilbo felt the mountain moved a bit and looks around.
"What was that?"
"Was that an earthquake?"
Balin knew what it was. "That...my lad..." He turns to the others.
"...was a dragon."
Bain looks at his father, Bard who was looking through the window at the Mountain. "...father? Are you okay?"He asked, Bard narrowing his eyes at the Mountain. "...they're going to wake up the beast and will bring destruction."
"Father...what if..."
Bard looks over at Bain.
"...what if Lily can convince the dragon to leave forever?" He asked.
"You know dragons can't be persuaded." Bard said, starting to have doubts now that they can't succeed and make the dragon leave the Mountain forever. "But father, nothing can kill the dragon." Bain said and that is when Bard got something out of hiding.
It was the Black arrow.
His ancestor's black arrow that would have killed the beast years ago and Bard had it in his house, hiding for many of years until it was time to put it into use once again.
"Not if I kill it first."
Smaug growled, his steps echoing in the treasure room.
"The King under the Mountain is dead! I took his throne!" Smaug shouted and Lily got out from the pile of gold that landed on her and she ran down the stairs. "I ate his people like a wolf among sheep." Smaug growled, barely missing Lily when his head zoomed beside her, growling and Lily tripped down the golden treasure, the Arkenstone still rolling down the hill with Lily behind it.
"I kill where I wish. WHEN I will!" Smaug growled, his tail slamming against the gold as Lily kept rolling down the hill of the golden treasure, Smaug crouching down a bit. "My armor...is IRON." Smaug took a leap and glided down to where Lily was as she slid under a small structure, Smaug landing on top of it as his tail curled around it.
"NO blade can pierce ME!" Smaug roared, his eyes glowed with fire and gold. Lily was gasping as she was hiding underneath the structure with the dragon on top of it. She looks around for the Arkenstone and saw it ahead of her, Smaug growling as he circled around the structure that she hid under and his pupils slit, growling louder.
"It's Oakenshield, isn't it? That filthy dwarvish usurpur!" Smaug growled, Lily still walking slowly over to the Arkenstone of where it laid. And then, Smaug knew what her plan was.
"He sent you in here for the Arkenstone, didn't he?"
"No, no!" Lily protested, still walking slowly to the Arkenstone. "I, uhh, no idea what you're talking about!" Lily tried to say, but that made the dragon angry as he growled. "DON'T sputter of denying it! I guessed his foul purpose some time ago!" Smaug growled and Lily hid behind the small pillar underneath the structure when his head was near where she was, his clawed hand grabbing one pillar that was away from her.
"But it matters not. Oakenshield's quest will fail." He then growled, raising his head up as he looks ahead, his pupils slit.
"The darkness is coming. It will spread to every corner of the land." Smaug growled and Lily thinks for a moment on what he said. Darkness? Does he mean Sauron's army legion of orcs? She clenched her eyes shut, gasping slightly as Smaug growled softly this time. "You are being used, Thief in the shadows. You are only ever means to an end." Smaug growled, his head near at where Lily was hiding at.
"The coward, Oakenshield, has waged the value of your life found it worth nothing?" He asked and Lily shook his head. "No..." She looks over at the dragon's head as Smaug growled. "No, you're lying!" She shouted.
"What did he promise you? The share of the treasure?" Smaug asked, his clawed hand grabbing some of the gold and then slammed his hand against the structure, growling. "As if it was his to GIVE. I will not part with a SINGLE coin!" Smaug growled and Lily tried to reach to the Arkenstone. "NOT. ONE. PIECE. OF IT!" Smaug's tail slid through the gold, tripping Lily as she rolled down the hill, including the Arkenstone.
"My teeth are swords!" He stomped his clawed hand against the ground. THOOM!
"My claws are spears!"
THOOM!
Lily looks over at Smaug, standing up as she tried to catch her breath. "My wings!"
THOOM!
"Are a HURRICANE!" And then Lily spot something...and it was where the black arrow pierced his armor skin, revealing a an opening to where his heart was, near his left wing and she gasped silently. "So it is true...the black arrow found it's mark." She whispered and Smaug growled.
"WHAT did you say?" Smaug demanded and Lily stilled and stood up. "No, uhh, I was saying your reputation precedes you, Oh Smaug the...Tyrannical! Truly, you have NO equal...on this earth." Lily said and Smaug growled, glaring down at her and Lily spotted the Arkenstone and Smaug saw it as well.
"I am almost tempted to let you take it...if only get to see Oakenshield suffer." Lily slowly looks at the dragon when he said that and he smirked a bit. "Watch it destroy him. Watch it corrupt his heart...and DRIVE him mad." Smaug growled and Lily tensed more and she could see his pupils turning slit once more.
"But I think not...I think our little game ends here." Smaug took a step back and Lily tensed even more. "So tell me...THIEF..."
His underbelly glowed red.
"How do you choose to DIE?" Smaug reached out to bite her in one and she turned into a Changewing dragon and camouflaged herself, Smaug missing her when he bitten the air. Then he growled as he took a step back once more, his underbelly glowing brighter and brighter until he released a giant jet stream of flames, roaring in the process. But he didn't see his kill anywhere and started to roar with rage, flaming the entire place with his fire.
Lily was behind another pillar, gasping as she looks over at the dragon that was in rage and then...she saw something.
Among his back that was right between his shoulder blades. It was a glowish purple red like object...but it was different than all of his armored skin, scale and gold that were on him. But she had to get a closer look at it, but not while he was in rage and went to find Thorin.
Of course, when she got to the entrance, she saw Thorin. "Thorin, I-"
"The Arkenstone...did you find it?"
"Thorin...look, if we don't get out of here, Smaug will-"
"Lily...I will ask you one last time." She was starting to get scared of Thorin a bit when he glared at her. "DID you find the Arkenstone?" He asked one more and Lily shook a bit. "Th-Thorin, please..."
They were cut off when Smaug saw them and roared. "YOU WILL BURN!" Smaug roared, charging after them as his underbelly glowed once more to release a jet stream of fire. Lily and the others went through the entrance just in time when Smaug's flames nearly got to them. Lily was gasping, nearly out of breath and Bilbo rushed to her, hugging her and she managed to hug him back. "Dad..." Lily gasped, trying to catch her breath.
"Oh, Lily...I thought I lost you."
Lily hugged him tighter, her eyes clenched shut.
"We have to reach the fire room. It's our only chance." Thorin said.
"But the dragon-"
"We don't have time. Let's go." Thorin said and the others went to follow. They were in the large room that was filled with corridors and hallways. They slowly walking towards to an entrance-
They heard a golden coin dropped to the ground and they stilled more before they look up, only to see the dragon above them, slowly walking while looking for the filthy dwarves that infiltrate his MOUNTAIN, growling loudly. They slowly walked away from the dragon when he crawled away. Lily still wondered about that certain object that was on him when she saw it earlier...but what was it?
"He'll get all of us..." Dwalin whispered.
"Not if we split up. Bilbo, Balin, Lily with me." Thorin whispered and they nodded, following Thorin and then...they heard the voice.
"Flee...FLEE. Run for your lives." They saw Smaug crawling over to them and they stopped in their tracks. "There is NO where to hide." Smaug grinned, baring his teeth-
"BEHIND YOU!"
Smaug turned his head, growling and saw dwarves behind him and he started to chase them, roaring while Lily followed Thorin, Balin and Bilbo to a corridor until they have reached to the boiler room. "This is the boiler room?" She asked, looking around to see large pots that were meant to melt the gold into many of items. "The plan is not going to work! The furnaces are stone cold!" Dwalin shouted.
"We have no fire hot enough to set them ablaze!" Balin said and Thorin smirked when he heard the dragon coming up from the depth of the corridor. "Have we not?" He smirked and went over to where Smaug was coming. "I did not look to see you so easily outwitted!" Thorin taunted when he saw the clawed hand climbing up the corridor of where they were.
"You have grown slow and fat, in your dotage!" Smaug growled, his pupils now dangerously thin, the thinnest they could go and Lily got scared of that. Thorin even smirked even more, his plan working.
"SLUG."
That triggered Smaug's anger as his underbelly glowed. "Take cover! Go!" Thorin shouted and they hid behind the iron bars that were keeping the dragon from them as he lets out a giant stream of flames, all of them being protected and Lily saw the furnaces going from the dragon's fire. "Go, go!" Thorin shouted when Smaug started to bang his head against the caged wall, roaring with rage.
"Lily! I need you to get out of here!" Thorin said and Lily looks at him. "Thorin-"
He pulled her into a kiss and she was surprised, but kissed him back and he pulled away. "Go. Now." He whispered and Lily nods, running off when she heard the caged wall break, Smaug now in the corridor with them, searching for the dwarf that gave him those terrible taunts at him and the one thing that no one should ever do is to ANGER a large Fire Drake, especially Smaug.
He then spotted Thorin and growled, ready to charge as small viles of flash flames were hitting him, but it had no affect on him, even when he is now dry when Bilbo pulled a lever that poured water onto the dragon. Smaug growled louder, ready to end the dwarf's life-
Carriages of trolleys that carried the gold hits him from above and he roared with pain and anger, flapping his wings while he got them off of him and then, his pupils went slit when he spotted Lily running off and he roared, chasing after her. He roared, snapping his teeth when Lily slid down something and entered the main corridor hall of kings, Smaug crashing through the wall as he roared loudly.
Lily kept running as she ran down and the large flag covered her as Smaug went over her and growled, turning around. "YOU, think you can deceive me, Dragon leader!?" Smaug growled, Lily slowly peeking from underneath the flag as Smaug growled louder. "You have come from Lake Town! I could smell the wretched barrels that they have carried through their wretched lands!" Smaug roared and then, he was in thought.
"This is some sort of it's key match between these filthy dwarves and those miserable tub-trading lake men! Those slithering cowards with their long bows and BLACK arrows!" Lily kept looking at him and then he growled, turning towards the entrance. "Perhaps it is time that I paid them a VISIT!" Smaug growled, going to destroy Lake Town and she stilled.
"Oh no..." She whispered, then stood up. "This isn't their fault!" She shouted, but he didn't listen to her and her pupils turned slit. "WAIT! YOU CAN NOT GO TO LAKE TOWN!" She shouted and that made Smaug stop and he hummed.
"...you care about them, do you? Good." Smaug smirked a bit, turning his head towards her when she ran up to him and she stopped. "Then you get to watch them DIE." Smaug growled and went to walk to the entrance where land and sky awaits him-
"HERE!"
Smaug stops in his tracks.
"You worthless wyrm!"
That made Smaug narrowed his eyes in anger, growling and turned to see Thorin standing on a statue. "YOU."
"I am taking back what you stole!" Thorin said, holding onto the chain that supported the statue he was standing on and Smaug growled, walking towards the dwarf.
"You will take NOTHING from me, Dwarf. I laid low your warriors of old. I instill terror in the hearts of men." Smaug was now close to him and used the walls to reach eye level with the dwarf. "I am KING under the Mountain." Smaug growled, glaring at the dragon. "This is not your kingdom! These are dwarf lands! This is dwarf gold!" Thorin shouted, the other dwarves ready on Thorin's command.
Smaug growled louder. "And we will have...our REVENGE." He then lets out a command in dwarf tongue and the dwarves started to pull on the chains, breaking the stone barriers of what Thorin was standing on and the chain moved, pulling Thorin up as the statue reveal to be a golden statue that was melded with melted gold and that certainly got the dragon's attention.
His pupils were wide of the large treasure he was gazing upon. It was so beautiful-
It then started to gouge out the gold that had not completely solid through and Smaug got out of his trance and roared, seeing the precious golden statue melt right in front of him and then he realized it was a trap. He starts to back up, roaring. He then trips and he was now buried in the melted gold and Thorin smirked, his plan now worked. It was silent, the gold now slowly turning into solid-
An angry golden dragon came out, roaring with anger. "Revenge!? REVENGE?! I WILL SHOW YOU REVENGE!" Smaug's voice roared with anger and hatred against the corridors of the Lonely Mountain, some of the gold trailing behind him and Lily stilled of the dragon's rage and she then saw the glowing purple-red item on his back once more and if she knew better, it glowed brighter when Smaug's anger grew.
Then it hits her.
She starts to run after the dragon. "Lily! Where are you going!?" Bilbo shouted, Thorin next to him when he got down from where he was hanging at and she looks at them.
"...doing something so stupid..."
She ran out, ignoring Bilbo's pleads to come back and wondering what she was planning on doing. When she got outside of the Lonely Mountain, she saw Smaug already taken flight, shaking off all the gold off of his skin and starts to fly straight to Lake Town. Lily turned into a dragon and flew after him and flew straight above him. "Okay...I got to time this right..." She thought, flying above of the raged dragon.
"I am Fire...I am...DEATH." Smaug growled, his pupils slit and his eyes narrowed when he spot Lake Town. She took a deep breath, preparing her crazy plan and transformed normal...
...and LANDED on the Fire Drake's back.
Smaug roared when he felt something land on his back and he turned to see the human girl on his back. She was ON HIS BACK! And he wanted her off. He could only think 'Get her off' and 'Kill her' and he started to do loops and spins to knock her off and she held on the best she could, holding onto one of the spines that grew on his back and then, she spotted the item.
It was a scale...
...but it was different when she saw a glowing eye looking around frantically when it saw her spotting it's hiding place. She manged to crawl over to it, slowly and grunted when Smaug kept trying everything to buck her off of his back.
She got to the scale and when she grabbed it, it started to screech and started to glow more and that made Smaug fly even more to get her off of him. Lily kept trying, clenching her eyes shut when she kept trying to yank the scale off of the Fire Drake. She knows that this was the main reason of the dragon's anger and rage and she needs to get it off.
She kept pulling, Smaug pulling crazier stunts to get her off.
She pulled the hardest she could muster, the scale now screeching the loudest it could muster until...
...Lily yanked it off.
Smaug felt something changed and then he roared in pain when he felt something inside of him hurting very badly. He then crashed against a part of the mountain side near Dale and Lily was knocked off when she hits the mountain as well, knocking her unconscious and landed inside of the water. Smaug starts to fly up in the sky, roaring and screeching in pain when a purple-red ooze started to drift out of him, the aura surrounding him slowly vanishing.
He then roared the loudest he could muster when it completely disappeared and his pupils went slit, his eyes widen when he felt the power no longer inside of him. Then his eyes closed, starting to fall out of the sky and into the lake where Lily had landed in.
Both Lily and the large Fire Drake started to sink down into the depths of the lake and there were faint roars from the distance as water dragons spotted them and one dragon grabbed Lily while another larger dragon, revealing to be Vordoom, grabbing Smaug before they disappeared into the large depths of the lake.
Lake Town was safe from the dragon's rage of fire...
...or will it stay safe forever from Sauron's region of orcs that were on their way to destroy the lands of Middle Earth. It was the last thing on Lily's thoughts until her mind went to complete darkness.
Here is Chapter Eleven.
What happens to Lily when Orcs are now on their way to Erebor?
And most importantly...
...WHAT happened to Smaug when Lily yanked off the scale that was on the Fire Dragon? Can Vordoom explain of what has happened? Or does someone else know of the source?
Well, hatchlings, you will have to find out on the next chapter.
Until then,
