CHAPTER 15
.
Sasuke drove towards the apartment building where two of his friends were living. Just last night, he went there to take Erza home but this afternoon, he was there to hang out with Kakashi. Kakashi had listed his name on the visitor's list so he was permitted to enter without any trouble at the gate.
"Hey Mr. Kobayshi," he greeted the guard who had become familiar with him. "Running a tight shift I see." He gave his ID to the old man to be checked in.
"Yeah, the other guard got sick, so I need to cover for him today," he said. Mr. Kobayashi handed him his ID back once he wrote the name on the ledger but Sasuke can see the troubled look on his face.
"Is there something wrong?" Sasuke asked in concern. He kinda liked the guy.
"You know son," he began. "Maybe it is me being paranoid or something but last night when you came in with Erza, I saw a guy in a black car taking pictures across the road," he motioned towards the front of the gate. "And I thought I saw someone taking pictures too the other time you've been here."
Sasuke raised an eyebrow at that. "Maybe it's nothing," Sasuke said trying to assure the man.
"Maybe but then I saw your face in some magazine, you're a model I presume," he inquired.
Sasuke only nodded in response.
"Maybe this guy is some kind of reporter or something," he said. "Now I might be wrong but it wouldn't hurt to watch your back and keep out of trouble."
"Alright," Sasuke replied. "Thanks for the advice Mr. Kobayashi and thanks for telling me about this," he said.
"Sure," the old man said before he opened the gate and let Sasuke drove in.
.
.
Sasuke stood in front of Kakashi's door and knocked on it three times. Waiting for his friend to open the door, his eyes trailed to the opposite direction wondering if Erza was home.
The door opened and Kakashi appeared behind it with a smile on his face. "Yo, Sasuke," Kakashi greeted with his trademark grin, and enveloped him in a tight hug.
"Hey Kakashi," he greeted back. "It's good to see you."
"Yeah," the other male drawled. "Come in," he motioned inside and Sasuke walked in closing the door behind him.
He looked around the apartment and noticed that it was the same design as Erza's apartment. "Nice house," he praised looking appreciatively at the photos on the wall. They looked elegant and captured beautifully. No doubt that they were Kakashi's masterpieces.
"Thanks," Kakashi said. "You want some drinks?" He asked, already walking to the direction of the kitchen without waiting for his reply.
"Sure," Sasuke said as he went to the living room and sat on the couch.
"So, how did the dinner go last night?" Kakashi asked as he came back from the kitchen with the drinks. Sasuke took the Cola handed to him before Kakashi moved to sit in the opposite direction.
Just remembering the dinner brought a smile on his face. "It went well," he said grinning happily. "By the way, you're wrong about my friend being Itachi's fiancée. It is her cousin," Sasuke supplied. "I just made an embarrassment out of myself last night," he said frowning about the misunderstanding.
"Really?" Kakashi said curiously. "Tell me about it."
Sasuke told him in detail about how the dinner went last night. And by the time he finished his story, Kakashi was laughing out loud hearing about it.
"Dude, that must be really embarrassing," Kakashi cackled with glee making Sasuke to frown darkly at his best friend.
"You have no idea," Sasuke replied scathingly while Kakashi sniggered at him.
"By the way, I met Haruno on my last job," Kakashi told him.
Sasuke tensed when he heard that name. "Really?" He inquired half-heartedly.
Kakashi nodded in return. "She asked me about you. But I told her I haven't met you yet since you switched school".
Sasuke let out a relief sigh. "That girl is crazy and delusional," he muttered darkly. "Let's not talk about her. Just by hearing her name alone puts me in a bad mood."
"Understandable," Kakashi said with a shrug.
Sasuke was glad that Kakshi seemed to drop off that subject behind. He really didn't want to talk about anything related to Haruno Sakura. That girl was one delusional bitch. Just because they were always paired together for photo shoot and runway didn't automatically made them an item. She really had the nerve to declare herself as his girlfriend once when asked by the media. It took a lot of time and effort on his part to clear up the misunderstanding. It didn't help that the media seemed to think that he was just making excuse because he didn't want their relationship to go public, to avoid the extra attention in his personal life. What a crap! Of course he didn't want the media or anyone for that matter to intrude in his personal life but Sakura and him was never a couple in the first place.
He knew that Sakura liked him but he didn't like her even one bit and he never misled her to think otherwise. Hell, he didn't even like it when he got paired up with her for work. She was clingy, delusional and self-centered. He wondered how she survived so long in the industry with that attitude of hers. He guessed being a sole heir to a successful fashion company did help placing her above others. She was beautiful of course but manners were something she lacked in her. He saw how she treated fellow female model, especially the juniors. She bullied them and even threatened some of them to stay away from him, like he was rightfully hers.
Just thinking about her made his head hurt, and dealing with her was frightfully exhausting.
.
.
"I guess I'll be going first," Sasuke said after a few hours spending time with his mentor. He went to the door accompanied by Kakashi, silently wondering if Erza was available. He remembered saying that he'd see her at school but it won't hurt to say hi when he was in the area, in front of her house to be exact.
"Come and visit again," Kakashi muttered as he opened the door.
"You know I will," Sasuke said as he stepped out of the door.
As if on cue, the door to the opposite apartment opened and Erza stepped out of her house looking like she was going out. She stopped in her track when she noticed him standing in front of her.
"Sasuke?" She inquired with a look of genuine surprise written on her face. "What are you doing here?"
"Hi Erza," he greeted. A smirk automatically made itself presence on his lips. "Remember the friend I mentioned last night. This is him," he said, motioning with his hand towards Kakashi who was leaning casually against the door, watching their interaction with interest.
"I see," Erza said as realization dawned on her.
"Erza, this is Kakashi," Sasuke introduced them. Kakashi, this is Erza.
"Hello," Erza greeted the older man offering her hand. "We've been neighbors but we've never met each other properly before," she said with a sheepish look.
"Hi," Kakashi shook her hand briefly. "You're right about that. I'm not at the house much because of my work but feel free to ask for my help if I'm available. Any beautiful friend of Sasuke is also my friend," he said kindly, a little flirtatious in Sasuke's opinion. Sasuke scowled at Kakashi behind Erza's back but the older man only raised an eyebrow in question.
"Thank you," Erza said with a small smile. "I'll keep that in mind."
"So are you going somewhere?" Sasuke asked her, purposely cutting their conversation short.
Erza turned to him. "Yeah, I'm going to the book exhibition in town."
"There's a book exhibition in town? I didn't know that," he pondered on the fact. He never went to a book exhibition before as he always avoided public area with crowds like a plague, but he couldn't pass his chance to spend more time with the red head. "Can I come with you?" He asked quickly.
Erza looked at him uncertainly but she shrugged nonetheless. "I guess," she replied shortly.
"Excellent," he said. "Let's go then."
"Sure."
"I'll see you later, Kakashi," Sasuke said to his friend as he bid him goodbye.
The silver haired man chuckled in response with a knowing smirk on his face. "Yeah, yeah. You kids go have some fun and don't do anything that I wouldn't do," he teased the two of them with glee.
Sasuke glared at him which only fueled his teasing further while Erza looked confused.
"Have fun on your date," he said before he quickly went inside and closed the door behind him, not wanting to hear any denials from either of them.
Sasuke grumbled in annoyance at his mentor. He had half a mind to bang on the door to demand Kakashi to open the door so that he could correct him. What would Erza think when she heard that. He didn't want her to misunderstand the situation, especially when their relationship was going good. One look towards her made him noticed the blush dusting on her flawless cheek.
"Let's go," she said before she turned and walked away from there.
Sasuke quickly followed her walking side by side, neither of them glance at each other.
Great. Now, it's going to be a bit awkward with Erza, he thought grudgingly, cursing Kakashi in his head.
Inside the safety of his apartment, Kakashi snickered watching those two teenagers walking away from the hallway, through the peephole.
"You are so whipped Sasuke," he muttered with glee. He had a feel that the youngest Uchiha harbor some feeling towards his neighbor. It was obvious in the way he talked about her, the way he talked to her, the way he acted around her and the way he looked at her.
So he thought he was helping Sasuke by giving him a little push by teasing him back then.
.
.
"Are you sure no one will recognize you?" Erza asked for the nth time as Sasuke fixed the glasses on his nose and wore the cap to conceal a part of his face from view. Now that she thought back, maybe it was not a good idea for Sasuke to tag along with her. It was going to be crowded at the exhibition and she was afraid that his fan would recognize him and caused a scene.
"Don't worry Erza, no one will recognize me in this," he said trying to reassure her.
"Well don't blame me if your rabid fangirls recognize you and chase you around later. I'm just going to ignore you and enjoy the books there," she threatened.
"You won't," he said confidently.
"And how do you know?" She countered incredulously.
"Because you love me, that's why," he replied casually like it was the most obvious thing in the word.
"Ughh…," she snorted with a shake of her head. Erza couldn't believe the nerve of this man. It was time like this that it made her wanted to strangle him. His cocky and overconfident attitude made her bristle in annoyance. She knew that he was joking but sometimes he was too much. "Let's just get going," she said in a defeated sigh. He just loved to get under her skin sometimes so it was better to let things go before they went into a full verbal judo.
They went to the exhibition area inside the mall and noticed the crowd.
"It's not too late to back out," Erza warned him.
"Nah," he refused confidently. "I've never been to a book exhibition before, so I might as well experience it while I can," he said.
Erza was startled at that. No wonder he sounded so eager to follow her to the exhibition. At times like this that she felt pity for him. Looking at his lifestyle, there was a lot of things that he never did in his life before.
"Suit yourself," she said as they made their way forward. They walked through the crowds, stopping sometimes at a booth that they wanted, perusing through the books on display. After getting bored at the booth, they went for another one with different kinds of book. However, as they move further forward, more crowded the place had become. It was getting stuffy at the exhibition, but they enjoyed themselves nonetheless.
.
.
Sasuke perused through the books in interest. They were currently at the history and folk lore section. A glance towards Erza showed that she had her nose buried in one of the books on supernatural creatures. He raised an eyebrow at that. He didn't peg her as a girl to take interest in those kinds of things. But then again, he found himself quite enjoying the topic despite his reluctance to believe it.
He got back to his reading material. Lost in his on world, he didn't notice that Erza had placed the book she had been reading back and walked away from the booth. It was only later when he looked up from his book that he noticed she was no longer there with him. A slight panic coursed through him, wondering where she had gone to.
Sasuke placed the book in its original place and moved through the crowd, craning his neck to find a glimpse of her unique scarlet hair. It was such a big place and after a few minutes of roaming around the place, he saw a flash of scarlet move through the crowd before disappearing again. He quickly went in that direction and later, there he saw her, craning her neck and looking around probably trying to find him in the sea of people. He sighed in relief when he spotted her. She hadn't seen him yet as he moved behind her, grasping her hand when he was closer.
She whirled around in shock and her eyes softened when she noticed that it was him.
"Where are you going wandering around, leaving me all alone?" He accused her with a scowl on his face.
"I'm sorry, I forgot about you," she apologized sheepishly.
"What?" He muttered incredulously. His ego was somewhat bruised. Never before in his life had someone forgotten about him when they were in his close presence. "What were you thinking about that made you easily forgot about me?" He asked accusingly with narrowed eyes at her.
"Well," she uttered. At least she had a grace to look guiltily at him.
"Well what?" He pushed for an answer. He saw her biting her lips looking uncomfortable and couldn't look him in the eye.
"I was thinking on checking some books in that section," she pointed with her finger, shifting uncomfortably on her feet.
"What section?" He inquired craning his neck to look in the direction that she pointed.
"Come on, let's go over there already," she said, dragging him with her towards the booth.
Sasuke was left gaping when they stopped at the intended booth. He didn't know what to feel when he noticed at what section the booth was about.
"Seriously, you forgot about me because of this," he motioned towards the books at the Cake and Pastry section. "Cooking books," he muttered grudgingly.
"Hey, it has recipes for various strawberry cakes in it," Erza countered taking offence by what he was saying.
"Of course, how can I compete with the strawberry cake," Sasuke muttered sarcastically, albeit in a joking tone. "It's good to know that my value has been reduced to be beneath the oh so mighty strawberry cake."
"You're not being reduced since you are always beneath it," Erza said with humor, giggling at the face that he was making. Her eyes glinting mischievously at him. "You can let go of my hand now, I'll try to remember that you're here with me," she said teasingly, tugging at her hand but Sasuke was quick to tighten his hand around hers. He could see the questioning look on her face but he was feigning ignorance, choosing to look at the book in front of him with a colorful and mouth watering cupcakes on the front page.
"Sasuke", Erza whined tugging at her hand harder.
"What?"
"Let my hand go," she demanded. "I need it to look at these books."
"I'm not letting go, that's your punishment for your little stunt earlier," he said smugly.
Erza continued to tug at her hand but it proved to be futile since Sasuke was much stronger than her. Soon they were arguing and their fight had gathered some attention from the people nearby.
"Ugh… Get a room you two," someone said from behind them. They stopped their fighting and looked around to notice that a few people were looking at them with an amused face.
"Ahh… young love, don't you think they look like us when we were younger," an elderly woman standing beside them said to her husband.
"Yeah, we fight a lot and you were playing hard to get but we end up marrying each other anyway," her husband said laughing merrily remembering their time during their youth.
The two blushed heavily when they heard that. With a quick sorry towards them, both Sasuke and Erza turned away from the elderly couple to hide their flaming face. Sasuke saw Erza paid attention to a random book quietly without any words and he still had her hand in his. He pondered whether he should let go of her hand now, but he didn't want to because he liked the feeling of her warm hand around his. It felt right, like it belonged there.
He noticed a book about cakes and looked inside it. Opening the book to a certain page, he pushed the book in Erza's direction. "Here, take a look at this," he said.
He saw her eyes widened in excitement. "Strawberry cake," she exclaimed eagerly.
"I thought you might like it," he said with a smile.
"Of course, I am so buying this book," she muttered, satisfied with the content of the book after she inspected it. She turned to him expectantly. "Do you want to buy any book? If not, can we get out of here, I'm hungry," she said.
"Let's go. I'm hungry myself," he agreed, before he dragged her away from the booth towards the cashier. He couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. It was too crowded and his stomach was growling already. So, the sooner she paid for the book, the sooner he could find some food to stuff himself.
.
.
"Thanks for today, Sasuke," Erza said as Sasuke drove her back towards her apartment after their early dinner at the local fast food restaurant.
"No problem. I'm the one who tag along remember," he said as he drove carefully on the road.
"Yeah but I enjoy your company," she admitted with a shrug earning a smile from him.
"I'm glad," he said. "I suppose you can cut me some slack at school now that we've grown closer".
Erza rolled her eyes at him. "You wish," she added sternly. "I'm going to punish you just the same if you dare broke the rule."
She saw him snickered at her response. If someone asked her a week ago, she'd say there was no way on earth that she was going to be in a close presence of one Uchiha Sasuke willingly, having a good time and being civil with him. But look at where they were now, with him driving her home after a casual outing. Somehow his unexpected presence in her life changed her a lot. And she meant it in a good way.
"We're here," Sasuke suddenly announced, startling her out of her thought.
Erza gathered her book that she purchased and exit the car. "Thanks again Sasuke. I'll see you at school tomorrow," she said with a small smile. She saw him nodding at her and with a final wave towards him, Erza walked towards her apartment building with a happy feeling.
.
.
Walking through the school hallway on her way to the classroom was supposed to be like any other day in school. But today, she could feel the difference in the atmosphere. It made her skin crawled in anxiety and she couldn't shake the annoying feeling that something had happened without her knowing. Something important related to her that she was supposed to know about. The reaction she got from the other student she was passing through only made her suspicion went sky high.
Some of the students huddled together in group of two or three, talking in hushed voiced and staring at her intently when they thought she was not looking. She had a mind to order them to return to their classroom but it was still early in the morning. She felt like it was not fair to stop them because they were not doing anything wrong or breaking any rules.
Sighing in annoyance, she made a detour to the bathroom instead. People were still staring at her and there were mixed emotion she saw on different faces. Some was sad, some was downright angry and some was looking at her with a green face but a few of the sported a happy look on their faces.
Reaching the bathroom, she went into one of the stall and plopped on the seat cover trying to think. What had she done this time to garner such reaction from the students? She could think of nothing.
Right on cue, she heard a couple of girls entered the bathroom and they were gossiping among them. Erza ignored them but her attention was perked when she heard her name being mentioned. She paid attention to their talk hoping that they would give her a clue about the weird reaction she got from most of the girls this morning.
"No way!" She heard one of them yelled.
"I have the proof here," another one said confidently. Erza heard a rustle of papers being flipped. "Look at this, this is certainly our student council president. I mean, look at the hair. It's a dead giveaway that the girl is Erza."
Erza's eyebrow rose up at that. What the hell are they talking about? She thought in frustration.
"It is even stated here that her name is Erza Scarlet. Wow, this is big. I didn't know that they were close before, much less dating" a different voice muttered in a slightly high pitch tone.
Erza was confused. I am dating someone? She thought. This was just getting weirder.
"No!" The one she recognized to be the first voice yelled. "Why her out of all people that he choose to be his girlfriend? He is supposed to be mine!" The girl wailed pitifully.
That's it! Erza thought furiously. She couldn't stand it anymore. They better explain to me what the hell happened or else!
With that, she opened the door and stepped out of the stall facing the three girls gossiping earlier. She saw the shocked and horrified look on their face as they saw her. They automatically were backing away when she purposely striding towards them.
"You!" She pointed towards the girl standing in the middle, looking close to tears. "Tell me what the hell are you talking about," she ordered.
"E-Erza," she stammered. "I- I think it is b-better if you read it yourself," she said, handing what looked like to be a magazine to her. Erza took the magazine from the shaking hand with confusion.
But then, her own eyes widened when she saw what was on it. There on the display was her picture together with Sasuke with the most ridiculous headlines she had ever read emblazoned on the page.
Sasuke Uchiha in Serious Relationship with Girlfriend Erza Scarlet!
"What the hell?!" She shrieked in rage, tearing the magazine in two in the process.
The three unfortunate girls who witnessed her little display of strength and anger were probably scarred for life as they screamed and ran away from the bathroom with tears in their eyes. It was time like this that they didn't question why other students called Erza the Demon President.
.
.
At the same time with different setting, Jellal Fernandes sat at the backseat of the car as his driver sent him to school with a similar magazine in her hand looking at the pictures in it. He couldn't believe what he was seeing or reading.
His hand was clenching furiously at the pages of the magazine where Erza was looking very beautiful with a smile on her face as she walked side by side with Uchiha Sasuke heading towards his car. Jellal didn't know what to think, she said Sasuke was not her boyfriend but if that was the case, what business did she have going to his house at night. And what was with the news of him seeing going to her apartment building and only leaving in the next morning.
He felt betrayed and he knew that he had no right to feel that way anymore since they were no longer together. It was his fault why they broke up in the first place although he didn't really want to break up with her. If only she had chosen him instead of her parents' company.
No! He refused to let her be with another man, especially not Sasuke Uchiha. He would definitely get her back to be with him.
"You're mine alone, Erza Scarlet," he muttered darkly under his breath.
.
.
A girl with a long pink hair tore the pages of a magazine apart when she saw the gossips in it. Not satisfied with murdering the poor magazine, she threw away her makeup and all of the personal items sitting on her vanity to the floor. She paid the expensive broken items lying around carelessly no mind as she proceeded to express her fury by thrashing around her bedroom leaving it in a mess, screaming in rage in the process.
"Erza Scarlet," she uttered the name venomously with a murderous glint in her eyes.
