Chapter 7: The Floating Restaurant Baratie
Going Merry, Open Sea
Jenny was worried. The Baratie was the last place she wanted to be in the East Blue. If they were going to the Baratie, it meant he was there, and seeing him again meant she was going to get her shit kicked in.
Jenny sat cross-legged on the railing of the upper deck and bit her thumb nail as they approached the ship/restaurant, Zoro sat watching her from the top of the galley. Rather than ask her what had gotten her riled up so, he decided to just get her mind off of what was worrying her.
"You never answered our question," He said, startling her out of her concerned reverie. She looked at him, waiting for him to explain. "You know, why you joined the crew if you knew we were pirates?"
Jenny blinked before sighing and hanging her legs off the railing. "Honestly? I was desperate," she answered. Zoro looked confused, so she continued, "Literally no one else would take me on. Marines were under orders to not allow me on their ships, because my dad didn't want me getting hurt out at sea. Pirates were afraid of being targeted by marines because of my dad, and merchant and passenger ships were worried about being targeted by pirates for the same reason."
"Why were you so desperate to leave?" Nami asked, apparently having heard the whole thing.
"Well, my only friends, my brother, and my father had already left the island," Jenny looked into the sky wistfully, "I had to pursue my dream at some point, or else it's just a fantasy. So when you guys came along and offered," She looked back at the two pirates with a small smile, "How could I say no?"
"I suppose that makes sense," Ussop said, having joined while Jenny was talking. Even Luffy had sat down nearby, patiently listening.
"What's your dream?" Luffy asked after being so weirdly silent.
"There's a place I want to find, and supposedly it's on the Grand Line," Jenny smiled bigger, "An island made of Sky Metal! The perfect ore, stronger and lighter than even titanium. A metal so perfect, it couldn't come from this world. That's my dream, to find that island!"
"Sounds like a fairy tale," Zoro said before Nami smacked him in the head.
"So does becoming the world's greatest swordsman," Jenny replied, still smiling, "So does finding the One Piece." The crew was then silent for a few moments while they processed what she said. It quickly got awkward. "Well that's enough about me, what about you guys?" Everyone turned and looked at her as she broke the silence. "You guys know my story but I don't know a thing about you."
"What do you want to know?" Luffy said, apparently excited by the idea of 'story time'.
"Well let's start with how you guys met."
"Okay!" Luffy began, "It started with a barrel and a whirlpool!"
Three hours later
"Okay, let me see if I've got this straight," Jenny said after hearing what was shaping up to be a pretty wild story. She pointed at Zoro, "You got lost after leaving your village, needed to eat, and just so happened to become one of the most infamous men in the East Blue," she pointed at Nami, "You're not even technically part of this crew, but you managed to steal not only from Iron Mace Alvida but also Buggy the Clown, two notorious pirates," her finger turned to Ussop, "You revealed a plot to kill your best friend/girlfriend and then faced down Captain Kuro of a Thousand Plans and lived, AND did it so no one in your village would ever know," as Ussop blushed at the girlfriend comment, she turned to Luffy, "And you," Jenny let her arm drop and shook her head, "There are no words."
Luffy just laughed. Before they could talk further, Johnny announced that they were close to the Baratie. As the rest of the crew headed to the front, Jenny stood for a moment, still dumbfounded. What kind of insane crew did I join? Between a captain with devil fruit powers, a swordsman with a broken internal compass, a pirate thief with anger issues, and Ussop, this crew is one of the craziest she's ever seen.
Jenny decided to join the crew at the front of the ship to get the first glimpse of the sea restaurant she had gotten in a long time. The pirates reacted as she had, with a mixture of awe and laughter at the ridiculous ship. Honestly they need to redecorate, I'm pretty sure they have enough money, she thought, smiling slightly at the fish-ship.
Just as they were about to pull up to dock, they noticed a marine ship directly to their right. As soon as Jenny saw Fullbody at the head of the vessel, her smile dropped. She had never met the man in person, but Aric's letters spoke of his arrogance in detail. What is with these jerk marine captains lately?
"Who is your captain?" Fullbody shouted across.
"I am," Luffy responds, "My name is Luffy!"
"And I'm Ussop the sniper," Ussop added unnecessarily.
"We just got our mark a few days ago!" Well that was news to Jenny. She knew the pirates were green, but she didn't know they were basically bean sprouts! And how long was a few days? She had only joined two days ago, did that mean they had only gotten their mark the day before they met her? Or even the same day?
Fullbody snorted as his eyes swept the deck, though they did hesitate on Zoro and her legs. His eyes finally landed on Johnny and Yosaku. Long story short, he insulted their manliness, they retaliated, they got their butts kicked right back to the Merry, and now Fullbody was telling the marines to sink the ship.
Wait, WHAT?!
Jenny started paying attention again just in time to see the marines pointing a cannon at the Going Merry, but the crew didn't seem worried. WHY AREN'T THEY WORRIED?! Jenny quickly got her answer.
"Gum Gum Slingshot!" Luffy shouted as he stretched his body across the ship, hanging on to the railing and other parts of the ship. As he caught the cannon ball in his entire torso, Jenny's eyes had widened to the size of dinner plates. Then he lost his grip on the ship and the ball was flung into the top tier of the restaurant. A group of staff very quickly came and took the captain inside.
Jenny stood, still dumbfounded at Luffy's display. She had known that he had devil fruit powers, but she hadn't known what power he had. Admittedly, rubber suited the bouncy idiot. Once they got going it takes a long time before either slow down.
"You gonna stand there forever or are you coming?" Zoro said as the others started moving towards the restaurant.
"Oh, right," she said, following, forgetting her earlier trepidation. As soon as they entered the restaurant however she remembered, meanwhile ignoring the whispers of the customers nearby as they eyed her legs. They sat down and immediately Jenny noticed Fullbody sitting across from a beautiful woman. Waiting on them was-
Aw shit.
As she saw the flirtatious, smoking, blonde cook, Jenny raised her menu to cover her face, hoping he wouldn't notice her. But as she heard him flattened Fullbody's attempt to look impressive and cultured in front of his lady friend (she couldn't hold in a snicker at that) she knew he was coming over here to take their orders, as she didn't see the usual bustle of waiters around the restaurant.
"And what can I get for the lovely lady today?" Sanji said as he waltzed over to the table and took out a pen and notepad. He held back on his usual flirting for the sake of getting the people fed before he launched into full perv-mode. He took the orders of the rest of the crew before turning to Jenny.
Okay, just order something that you usually wouldn't, and he'll never know. "I'll have a red wine and the gazpacho, please," she said, affecting her voice so it sounded… well really not at all different, but she thought it helped.
"Really now?" Sanji raised a curly eyebrow, but he didn't look up from his notepad, "Not your usual shepherd's pie? You hate vegetable dishes." Jenny let out a small 'eep' as he continued, "And you know what alcohol does to you. Might I recommend a glass of milk?" Jenny lowered her menu, face red with embarrassment as she glared at the smirking sous chef.
"How'd you know?" She questioned. He merely gestured towards her legs. She internally swore, she had forgotten she was wearing shorts in her panic.
"The old man will probably want to see you," Sanji said as he put away the pad, "But that can wait until after you eat. If you can actually pay this time." He added while shooting her a knowing look. He turned to walk away, saying over his shoulder, "Good to see you, cyborg."
"You too, cyclops," she replied, sighing. The crew looked at her confused for a moment.
"What was that about?" Zoro finally asked.
"I had to skip out on a bill once," she responded, "Teacher brought me here a few times on our trips. One time he left back to the ship before paying, leaving me with the bill," Jenny looked a little sheepish, "I was broke at the time though."
"Well that covers one question, but I have one more," Zoro said. Jenny's head turned slightly to the side as her eyebrow raised. Zoro pointed over his shoulder at Sanji, who was currently talking with Fullbody again, "That waiter-"
"Sous Chef."
"Whatever, he was flirting with every girl in this restaurant," Zoro pointed at Jenny, "Except you, why?"
"Perceptive aren't you?" Jenny said smiling, "Well, while every other girl is a chance at love for him, I am no such thing."
"Then what are you?" Nami asked.
"Competition," Jenny said, winking at the other girl. Nami's eyes widened with realization.
"Wait you mean you're…" Nami let the question hang.
"Yep!" Jenny's grin became mischievous. "I-"
They were interrupted by the marine captain attacking Sanji and subsequently getting his butt handed to him. Jenny shrunk slightly into her chair as she saw Patty appear. The man hated anyone who even attempted a dine and dash, let alone got away with it.
"Sanji, what the hell are you doing?!" Patty yelled at the blonde chef.
"He wasted good food," Sanji replied coolly, still smoking. Oh, so that's what this is about, Jenny though, Sanji won't forgive anyone who wastes food.
"Are you still beating up my customers, Sanji?" Jenny had to resist the urge to hide underneath the table when she saw the ridiculously tall chefs at from across the restaurant. Zeff was the last person she wanted to see. The man intimidated her even before she owed him money.
"You chefs are crazy!" Fullbody screeched, "I'm going to shut down this restaurant! Just you wait!"
Zeff's eyes flashed with anger as he kicked the marine towards the door. "And what the hell are you still doing here?"
When he hit the wall another marine burst through the doors. "Sir! The prisoner, the one from Don Krieg's crew! He escaped!"
"WHAT?!" Fullbody shouted, "How?! We haven't even fed him in three days!" Jenny's eyes narrowed at that. Pirate or no, whoever it was didn't deserve to starve. The marine was about to explain further when a bullet tore through his chest. Behind him stood the man she guessed was the pirate, holding a smoking gun.
Well, Jenny thought as she put a hand on her own gun, This certainly got dramatic.
DONE
