Chapter 11: Checkmate

The hour has come at last. The long awaited moment to end their suffering has finally came, for too long he has been playing the pawn in the chessboard but no longer. As mayor Ronald Wilson celebrate victory in a lavish hotel with spectacular chandelier made in Czechoslovakia, fine wine made in Bordeaux, France. And turkey made in Maine. It was the high life for a winner, but all good time must come to an end. Godfather Carlino had his men posed as valet and servants for the party, some of the don's finest men even managed to smuggle Kiryu in using the lorry for the kitchen. Mayor Wilson was partying hard, drinking as much booze as his blond head can take, his comb over hair was a dead giveaway at how desperate the man was. A womanizing, egotistical, xenophobic, deluded moron with no redeeming factor to himself. Castagella was there, sipping his Champagne like he had won an easy victory, show girls flanked him on both sides, putting on their pretty smiles to keep the Black Hand happy and entertained. Outside of the hotel, don Carlino has just arrived with his men, accompanying Carlino, was MechaGirain wearing her best evening dress.

Walking through the entrance, don Carlino saw Wilson and Castagella enjoying the party like there's no tomorrow, after all there won't be any tomorrow for them. "Any words on that whore?" Wilson asked his friend, who in turn, shake his head negatively then follow up with his answer. "I wish finding her was easier. I'll inform you as soon as I can." As Castagella taking a sip from his glass of Bordeaux, he heard a familiar voice behind him. "Looking for someone?" Wilson and Castagella turns around, they saw the thing that they dread the most. "Am I interrupting your party?" MechaGirain casually struck a nerve, Castagella's eyes became intense and his hand hardened at around his right waist, obviously trying to reach for a gun. Don Carlino gave a chuckle to Wilson and Castagella's faces and casually speak up to them. "Come now amici (Friends) you want to see us, here we are. Now are you going to just shoot us and ruined the celebration like this?"

"How the hell did you squeeze in here? Where are the damn cops?" Wilson shouted but only the mindless show girls give a damn at his true color, while the rest of the men who were there don't care. "You forgot what people used to call to me when I was young. They called me, La Vulpes (The Fox)." Then, Carlino's hired guns quickly draw out their Tommy guns and surround the room. Castagella and Wilson were both apprehended in an instant, Kiryu was walking in from the kitchen, looking like a grim reaper with his eyes fixed on Castagella. "Checkmate. You end the game when we were still playing, bad move Castagella. Bad move." Kiryu took a cigar from Castagella's favorite cigar box and smoke a minor victory. Kiryu then quickly jab Castagella in the stomach, a sure thrust drives the Black Hand to the ground and vulnerable. "Not so tough without your cop now, aren't you? You got a date with fate. So let's not keep the lady waiting."

Kiryu drove his car out to the docks, a long way drive, along the way he flipped through the radio stations to see if there's any music worth the time. Until he finally settle on a station playing Jimi Hendrix's "All along the watchtower". "You speak of family like you know what word means. You didn't have to find a place to belong. You didn't have to bleed through a jungle just to find who's your true brother. You didn't have to turn your back on god just to know someone would treat you as a son. Family to you is a fucking last name. If you know what word means...then you would never fuck with mine." They arrived at a boardwalk dock, where carnivals once held and Valentines has a favored place to show love. "Liars like you are loved. Because you know how to pander to foolishness of the mass. But here you're just another man." Castagella was being dragged to the edge of the dock, only Kiryu recognized the place. Where his love life ended ten years ago. Here he restart a new, starting with Castagella's death. He coldly tied up the don and gagged his mouth before tying his legs with a pair of bricks then shove him down into the Atlantic Ocean.

A month after the death of Castagella, Kiryu and Anna were at the train station of the city, accompanied by MechaGirain to greet them off. "Where will you go from here?" She asked bringing along his luggage, "Westward. Anywhere is fine. Perhaps L.A, or Hawaii or maybe San Francisco. I'll write to you as soon as I get there." MechaGirain leans in on Kiryu's snout, holding his face close to her as if she wants something from him. "Will I ever see you again?" Kiryu holds her claw down to his chest before giving his answer. "I sure will. Here's to you sweet heart." They lean in and shared a passionate kiss, hoping that they would meet each other again. Kiryu and Anna then have to board the train and wave goodbye to MechaGirain as the scene of their past and the train station faded away into the distant horizon.
