RAINING IN THE DESERT
Sara pulled her arm, but I wouldn't budge, all she could feel was pain, every part of her body ached and her arm burned with pain. But she wouldn't give up, as she struggled to free herself, her mind drifted to Grissom. He was her comfort, her strength, if she couldn't fight her way out for herself, she would do it for him. She thought back to the first time she had met him. If she had known what she knew now she would have followed him to Vegas then, she would have given up everything for him. She felt her eyes sting with tears. The water was rising fast and she was becoming desperate. Looking around she tried to find something, anything to help her.
AFTER THEY INSPECT NATALIE'S CAR
Grissom could see Sara's face, clear as if she were standing in front of him. He reached up and touched his cheek. Five years ago, he knew without a doubt he loved Sara, but he couldn't tell her. Choosing his career over his feelings for her, he thought it would pass. But it didn't, Sara was persistent but patient. But how close he had come to losing her, he had pushed her away too hard, he had nearly missed out on her love for good.
Grissom squeezed the bridge of his nose, he was fighting back tears hard. Getting up he closed the door to his office, locking it from the inside. He shut the blinds and sat down on his couch. Leaning his elbows on his knees he let his head fall into his hands. He couldn't hold back the tears anymore. These weren't just tears of sadness, he was angry at Natalie, at himself. It was his fault Sara was under that car, it was his fault they couldn't find her. He had broken Natalie, and his love for Sara had got her taken from him. He was frustrated that they couldn't catch a break, frustrated at the lack of answers. He needed to know where Sara was, he needed to hold her and tell her he was sorry, feel her warmth, see her smile, tell her he loved her. Grissom stayed that way for a few minutes. When the tears had subsided he wiped his face and stood up. He needed to make himself useful, he needed answers.
As Grissom exited his office, he saw the sky outside, it was a dark shade of blue with scattered pinks and oranges. It was dawn, he shook his head in despair, Sara had been out all night in the rain, and they were no closer to finding her.
SARA LEAVES THE CAR
As the sun rose, Sara opened her eyes, while she had found some shelter overnight, it did not keep her completely dry. Sara shivered as she watched the sky. Dawn she thought. She knew that this was the coldest part of the day. Sara stood up and looked around, trying to find some indication of where she should head, but it was hopeless, all around her was dry flat desert. Sara made a decision, she would head in the direction that Natalie drove off in. It was no good sitting here and waiting, she couldn't be sure how long it would take them to figure out she was missing, let alone figure out how to find her.
Sara felt the sharp pain in her arm, reminding her is it was broken. She took off her shirt to make a sling, ripping part of the shirt to use as a head ban, she didn't know how long she would be out in the desert for, but it would keep the sweat and hair from her face. Once she had placed the sling around her, she headed off hoping that help wasn't too far off.
GRISSOM DRIVES TO THE DESERT
Grissom had his foot to the floor, flanked by multiple police cars and vans, he wasn't worried about how fast he was going, all he wanted was to get to Sara as fast as possible. As they veered off into desert, Grissom followed the instructions of the helicopter. There were not roads marked and it would have been all too easy for the convoy to get lost out in the desert. Speaking for the first time since they had left the lab, Nick turned to Grissom and said
"Griss, I know you want to find Sara alive, but you've got to prepare yourself for the worst"
Grissom looked at Nick and said,
"No, I won't Nick. I have to believe she's alive, it's all that is keeping me going right now" He said, but Nick noted that he sounded defeated
"Griss, I know, I'm trying to believe it too, but in our job" He paused, Sara's voice echoed in his head.
"Well you know the chances"
Grissom nodded, he was feeling sick to his stomach, he knew the chances and that's what worried him.
As they rounded the bend, the mound that was once a car came into view, Grissoms heart raced. The car hard barley stopped before he jumped out and raced to the mound. Everyone around him was digging as fast as they could. Grissom prayed that Sara was not under the car, but when he pulled her CSI vest out, he's heart sank. If she was unconscious when it started raining, she wouldn't have got out, who knows what Natalie had done to keep her under the car.
Sara walking through the desert
Sara looked up at the sky, judging from the sun it was mid-morning. She hot and tired. She knew she couldn't stop. She prayed that Grissom would find the rocks neatly stacked and know that they were from her. She focused all her energy on walking, how many times had she heard of people walking around in circles in the dessert. One foot in front of the other Sara She told herself. She tried to keep herself from thinking negatively.
"Two times two is four" she spoked out loud. She was trying to keep her mind off the fact that her journey seemed hopeless
"Grissom has blue eyes, salt pepper hair, my head fits perfectly into the space between his head and neck. Like a jig saw" She tried to focus her mind
"Two times three is six"
"Grissom birthday is 17th August 1956"
"Two times four is eight"
Her feet started to drag, she wasn't sure how long she could continue.
Grissom and Catherine on the trail
Grissom and Catherine continued to follow the trail Sara had left them, he hoped they would catch up to her sooner rather than later. When Grissom has seen those shoes sticking up out of the dirt, he had thought the worst. He disregarded any rules about crime scenes and evidence and moved that body faster than he had ever in his life. It wasn't her, Grissom let himself feel a small amount of relief, but it was short lived. This wasn't Sara but who knew where and how they would find her.
Feeling defeated Grissom looked around the flat dry desert. Where are you Sara? He said to himself, Sara had been missing for nearly 18 hours It had rained, and nights in the desert are always cold, and now it was hot, very hot. Grissom tried to fight his tears back. It has been at least 18hours since Sara had, had water. Grissom stomach was knotted, every minute that they did not find her, he knew was a minute closer to her dying, and that was something he couldn't face.
Sara collapsed
"Four times four is sixteen" Sara said to herself. She had pulled herself up of the ground again. Her legs ached, her arms ached. She was hot, she needed water. She had no idea how long it had been since she had last drank anything.
"Four times four is…. Four times four is" She couldn't hold on anymore. She felt her knees go week as she fell to the floor. Darkness consumed her.
Grissom gets the call
Grissom heard Catherine's phone ringing but he didn't stop to hear what was going on. He was focused on finding Sara. They had been walking for nearly two hours, he knew Sara had been walking longer and he couldn't imagine what state she must be in now.
"Griss" he heard Catherine call "Hey Grissom, stop, they found her"
Grissom froze and turned to Catherine, as he saw the four wheel drive come up over the ridge to collect them.
Catherine was puffing as she caught up to Grissom.
"Griss come on, they found her, she's unconscious but she's breathing, they've called in the medivac but she's not too far from here"
Grissom's heart was beating fast, Sara was alive but who knew what state she was in. Even though the four wheel drive was moving at a considerable speed, it wasn't fast enough for Grissom. As they turned off the road, Grissom could see the crowd around Sara. The medivac team was already there. The car came to a stop and Grissom raced out of the car toward Sara. He needed to see her, to see for himself she was alive. As he reached her he could see the medivac team pumping her with fluids via the IV and lifting her onto the board. Grissom wanted so desperately to touch her, but he stayed back allowing them to help her.
