Chapter 14
Hermione and Severus sat next to each other in the small room at Saint Mungo's waiting for Healer Pomfrey to return. He had just asked her for a list of every spell that ever hit her physically and then taken blood to run a few tests. She easily hand him over a list of spells by name and the time they hit her.
"Severus, what do you think this is about?"
"I don't know Hermione. It could be any number of things. But I have a feeling it has to do with your previous pregnancy."
Hermione's insides twisted. And she felt tears forming in her eyes and she blinked them away, watching the door and waiting.
Finally the Door opened and Healer Pomfrey walked through the door with a solemn look in his eyes.
"Hermione, are you sure these are the only spells?"
"Yes, why?"
"I don't know how to tell you this," He started, his tone full of sorrow, "but you have a rare disease that only Witches can get. Fertilized eggs cannot make it to your uterus. It's a magical barrier. Witches used to die from it. About one in 17 witches are affected. It's irreversible, but treatable."
"Why did you need to know about spells that hit me then?" Hermione asked, trying to fight back the tears.
There was a moment of silence and then instead of Healer Pomfrey speaking, Severus said, "Tincta vero perderent."
"What?"
"Your Husband is correct. It's a spell that men used before the Wizengmot fidelity clause. When they suspected their wives of cheating, husbands would cast this spell on a their wives. If the wife was being unfaithful she would become pregnant by the other man and it would be a tubal pregnancy. She would die and he would be free to marry another. But if she got pregnant and it went along like a normal pregnancy, then he'd know she was faithful. It is a spell now completely outlawed. It was removed from every spell book and history book. But pureblood families do pass it down as a reminder."
Hermione sat there, staring and shaking, trying to hold back the tears.
"And Hermione, as you know, magic can detect a pregnancy from the moment of conception."
And Hermione couldn't hold it in anymore. She burst out in a sob. She knew what all of this meant. And it broke her heart. She could never experience pregnancy. She could never hold her newborn baby in her arms and she would never watch her children grow, even if they were with Severus.
Severus watched his wife cry. And it reminded him of why he was crying when she knocked on his door. He had realized that once Voldemort found the Elder wand he would realize it wouldn't work for him. And when he realized it wouldn't work, then Voldemort would kill him because he had no clue about the plan to make sure the elder wand had no other commander. Severus had realized he'd never hold a newborn that he helped make. He'd never watch them grow. He'd never hear someone call him daddy. He'd never be there to protect a little princess or teach a little boy how to be a knight.
Then he remembered her fifth year. Minerva mentioned that Hermione had been hit by an unkown spell. All anyone knew was that Hermione was knocked unconcious and that there seemed to be no harmful after effects. Harry Had described it as a purple flame.
"Hermione," He said, placing a hand on her shoulder and pulling out his wand, "tollere impedimentum et implantantur."
Hermione felt herself go faint in a way that she felt only one other time. Severus caught her as she fell and held ehr until she regained her strength.
"Hermione, I thought you handed me a list of every spell-" Healer Pomfrey started.
"I gave you every spell I knew. The only one I excluded was one from my fifth year. It was a purple flame and I had a complete check out here. They found no side effects. We assumed it was just a spell to knock me out, weaken Harry so his friends would be out of the way."
"Well now that we know, and since your husband knew the counter spell, Let me be the first to congradulate you."
Hermione stared in shock. She knew it was so early that implantation wouldn't be likely, but she also knew what Severus had said. She was going to be a mother in nine months. Her life was about to be turned upside down.
Severus took her hand and started to lead her out the door. He turned back, "Thank you, sir. If you hadn't have thought of this, she would never have this chance. We would never have this chance."
The healer nodded and Severus led Hermione off. Once they were in the hallway, he apparated her home and led her to the library.
Hermione was in shock from the moment Severus removed the curse to the moment he reappeared in the library of their home. In his arms he held a bag of books and a large pan with two forks.
"Severus."
"I know Hermione. And this is not what we expected, or planned, but we'll make it work. I got some books, because if i know you, you want to dive into research and I myself want to."
"No offense Severus, but I want to see what's in that pan. I mean, we skipped dinner."
"Ah. Well I'm afraid that it will only fill your sweet tooth."
He lowered the pan to reveal tiramisu.
"Severus, where did you get this much?"
"I may have apparated to a little store in Italy where I have a friend and I bribed him into giving me any before he opened."
"And there are two forks why? You can't possibly expect me to share," Hermione laughed grabbing a fork and taking a large bite.
"I fully expect you to share, or I will deduct house points for the entire year."
Hermione instead snatched the books from him and started reading. They were a mix of muggle and wizarding books on pregnancy. She sat on the opposite on of the room, moving back and forth to eat. As they read and ate, they slowly migrated closer together until sometime in the middle of the night they fell alseep, Hermione and Severus using the same book as a pillow, their hands just touching.
A/N 2: Alright well? I know it was short, but I really wanted to get you guys this chapter. November is almost upon us and I will be trying to keep up my dea. I will see hwat i can do to post a chapter a day or every other day. Some how i will find the time between school and my two jobs. By the way here's the spells. And remember, i use google translater from english to latin. So the spell "Tinctavero perderent" is latin for "Impregnate and destroy". I chose that because is is very destructive. And "tollereimpedimentumet implantantur" is latin for "remove barrier and implant". It removed the barrier put in place and guarentees implantation.
