I open my eyes slowly. My head hurts, a lot. Everything is blurry and ow the light hurts my head. Where am I? Where is Gandalf? I get up and out of a seemingly comfortable bed. There was a window by it so I looked out it. I was high up in some sort of tower like building. I was surrounded by a luscious forest and a beautiful view. I looked around the room to see my surroundings but there was not much. There were clean clothes laid out on the table by the door. They seemed small; more for a woman to wear. There was a clean white shirt, a nice pair of long cozy pants with a pretty belt going around. I get up to go look for Gandalf. The door is very small. I feel like I am trapped in a tower. I start to walk down the spiraling stair case outside my door and pass by other rooms that look similar to the one I was in. I get to a floor and a see this white cloaked figure. It looked like Gandalf from the back but I could not tell for sure with this pounding head ache.
"Gandalf? Is that you? Where are we? What happened to me?"
"Well Gandalf did say you were full of questions. He apparently was not kidding"
The figure turned around but it was not Gandalf. It was another person. I guess this must me Saruman the White.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was looking for Gandalf, Gandalf the Grey. You haven't happened to see him by any chance, have you?"
"Why yes. I just had breakfast with him in fact you may find him wandering the grounds at this very moment"
"Well thank you. I am much obliged"
I am just about to leave when he closes to two doors in front of me with the wave of his hand.
"Is there a particular reason you've shut the doors?"
"Why yes, yes indeed. I wanted us to get acquainted with one another before you disappear again. My name is Saruman the white, but you have probably figured that out by now. I am the head of this Wizard order and am the most powerful"
Well someone has a lot of admiration for themselves….
"What is your name little one?"
Little one? Who is he calling little? I am nearly as tall as he is.
"My name is Kay, I hail from-"
"Rivendell, Yes I know about that. What is your full name child?"
Someone is a know-it-all smarty pants.
"It is Kaydriella, but I do not like being called by that name. I go by Kay."
"I see. So tell me Kaydriella, what is it that you wish to gain by you being here?"
Did he miss the part where I said I didn't like being called that? I don't think we are going to be the best of friends.
"I honestly do not know sir. Gandalf brought me here to learn from you, so I guess that would be the reason"
"You do not sound as though you are willing to learn. Magic is a very hard skill to obtain and control, it is not easy and nearly impossible if you do not have the ambition to so. So I shall ask you again. What is it that you wish to gain from being here?"
Oh my goodness, now I know why Gandalf did not answer my questions about Saruman's character.
"I wish to learn how to control this power that I have. I do not like not being able to control it. I was told that you were the best person t learn this from"
"Well that is correct; I am the best person to learn from when it comes to magic. I am still not fully convinced you are eager to learn. You must believe and you must try or else both our efforts will be wasted."
"I really do wish to learn. It is an uncomfortable feeling waking up and not knowing what you've done and where you are. Will you tell me a little of my kin's past?"
"I shall. They were a good society far before the first age ended. Before it did there was really no race that did not have peace with the mages. Since they were able to control all four natural elements they flourished anywhere and were always jolly people. Sadly, it did not stay that way. Their leader, Aaron declared his self the most powerful in the land and wished for all races to bow down before him. He no longer wished to live amongst others, but above. He felt as if it was his obligation to rule all of Middle Earth. There were some who agreed with Lord Aaron's vision, but more who disagreed. It was in a mages nature to help others and care for one another. They did not see room for ruling over others and claiming dominion on places and people they protected. So the society split into two. One prepared for world domination while the other prepared to hide. Lord Brandon was the leader of the pacifist side. He was Lord Aaron's advisor until they saw different futures for their race. During a march on a mountain, Lord Aaron's company met with an avalanche. Since they were masters of the earth they should have been able to avoid such a calamity however it is said that they were not able to escape and therefore every single life was lost. It was said that Lord Aaron's soul was never allowed entrance to the afterlife and still wanders the mountain. As for Lord Brandon's people, they were crushed by the loss of their people. They were absolutely devastated, none more than Lord Brandon. They went into hiding, afraid they would also meet the same fate. Their numbers decreased every single year after, soon to extinction. We have not had signs of any living mage for ages. You can rest assure that you are most likely the last of your kin."
"Wow! How comforting"
"You should find honor, not sarcasm out of it. Out of all the great mages that once lived, you are the last. You stand as the very last of your kind, and you treat it as a joke? You are the joke. And if you wish to ever make something out of yourself you first must grow up."
Well he certainly got angry fast. I guess I really have been treating all this as a joke, with the hope that I could just wake up and all this would of just been one crazy dream.
"I understand. I apologize if I've offended you, it has been hard for me to accept this and treating it like a joke was the only to make the blow less painful. I do want to learn. I do, honestly"
"That sounds better, much better. Come let us go find Gandalf; there is much to be discussed concerning all of us."
I nod and follow him. We walk down some more steps and go through more doors. Finally the last stair case took us outside. We walked through the garden but Gandalf was not in there. We kept walking and found him by the stables. He was packing for the road, WITHOUT ME! I run quickly to him passing Saruman.
"Where do you think you are going without me?"
"Kay, you belong here. I have other matter I must attend to. I cannot sit around and babysit your progress"
Oh my goodness Gandalf's ripping my heart out and stepping on it. Why would he do that?
"Gandalf, you came here to just drop me off and leave, without even saying good-bye?"
"Kay, you are a strong grown lady who can take care of herself. I could never be more proud of you. This is just another step in your life, another chapter for a book. This is not good-bye my friend, this is just the beginning. I must be off but you, you must stay. Do me proud, do Lord Elrond proud, make yourself proud"
A can't stop it. A single tear dropped from my eye. Gandalf has never spoken to me like that before.
"Say your farewells Kaydriella. I will be waiting for you by the entrance" Saruman turned away from us and walked away.
"It's going to take some time getting use to him. He certainly has his own way of thinking"
"You make this old man smile Kaydriella. I still have not mastered the art of understanding him either. Looks like you will have to teach me in such matters. You will be fine. I will be back to see you again so there is no need to fret. Do your best and do it for you"
"I will Gandalf. I will"
"Good. Now I must be off. Farewell. Until out next meeting"
Gandalf rode off. I watched him until he was nothing more than a small speck in the distance. It felt almost like I was being abandoned, left to fend for myself. I guess it's about time I stepped up into the real world. I walk back to meet with Saruman and he is wearing a look of scorn. I wonder what I did this time to offend him.
"Are you quite finished with your farewell party?"
He was obviously mocking me. But I guess I'll have to learn to deal with it.
"Yes"
"Good. Now we may begin. Follow me"
And I do as I am told and follow the wizard back up into his tower. I pause for a moment to look back over my shoulder. The view from here I very fair and beautiful I glanced at all until the doors slammed in my face sealing off the outside light and leaving nothing but the stairs to climb in a misty darkness.
