KPOV:
For the past five consecutive nights, Legolas and I had been keeping a close watch on the night. We both knew something was amiss but we couldn't figure out what it exactly was. I tried to ignore it but Legolas insisted. Tonight was my first night I got to actually sleep. Boromir, Legolas, and Aragorn were on watch duty tonight.
Grumble Grumble
"Kaydriella, you should learn to tame your stomach. It is not lady like for it to be making sounds of that magnitude"
"Bormoir, if ate the amount you do, I would be bigger than my own horse"
"I do not eat that much at least not as much as they do-" He nodded towards the hobbits. Particulary Merry and Pippin.
"-I don't know where they put. It just is a never ending appetite for food"
We both laugh
"Oy! We can hear you" Merry stands up protesting our words.
"Yeah, we don't need those special ears to know when you're talking about us" Pippin now standing beside Merry crossing his arms.
"You know, maybe it's time to teach you guys some close combat. Hmmm?"
"Oh Yes Kay! We want fight just like you"
"Well, in all honesty, this is Boromir's expertise so…."
I look towards Boromir and give him a wink. I quickly grabbed his hand and pulled him off the ground. I then went to push him right in the direction of the two eager hobbits. I had done it. I had sacrificed Boromir to Merry and Pippin to escape my own fate of being a teacher.
"This is not fair. It was your Idea Kaydriella" Bromir yelled from afar.
"Yeah but who better to teach them than" I decided to mock him "Lord Boromir of Gondor" I puffed out my chest and talked in my low tenor voice to impersonate Boromir. Before I turned my back, I saw Merry and Pippin dragging him to an open space. They looked too excited to learn. Boromir sent me a deep glare but I acted like I didn't notice.
"You know boys; Kaydriella really isn't that good at fighting. You wouldn't want her teaching you anyways. Her strength would not even match to mine"
I turned back around to see Boromir instigating a fight with me. He was grinning like he has been told a dirty secret. I knew his game and I was not going to get sucked into it. I just shook my head and turned back around.
I saw Sam making a fire to start cooking dinner. We all were famished, but no one seemed to voice their hunger except Merry and Pippin. I thought maybe I could help him out. I might not be the best cook, but I know how to make a few things.
"Hello Sam"
"Kay" he bows his head while his attention is on starting the fire. I noticed he was trying to use the matches from his bag but was having trouble getting a light to start.
"Here, Sam, you are doing it the hard way. If you move your hand closer to the tip, the match will light easier when you go to strike it" I show him how to hold it and he lights the match on the first strike.
"Thanks. You must be good at this"
"Not good, just experienced. Anything else I can help you with?"
"Do you know how to fry some bacon?"
"Sam if you want bacon that is black, I'm your gal; otherwise there is no other type of bacon I can make"
"Hahaha then I guess you cannot assist me further"
"I'll be with Gandalf if you need me, especially if you want to take me up on my offer of black bacon"
He smiles. It takes a lot to make that hobbit smile; more than Frodo. I go over to sit with Gandalf and see that Gimli and Legolas are also with him. They were supposed to be keeping watch until supper.
"Gandalf"
"Kaydriella"
We acknowledge each other and I sit beside him on this big boulder rock thing.
"So what is the plan?"
"I beg your pardon Kaydriella"
"You know how we are going to get this ring into the heart of Mordor without being seen or sensed or killed?"
"You're not having second thoughts Kaydriella, I fear it is far too late to turn back"
"You know me never to go back on my word. Plus, who would want to miss out on this quest?"
"Any living creature. With sense"
"Sense is highly out dated Gandalf. It is those without sense that can do things no one with sense can"
"Well stating the obvious, it would seem so. Who told you that?"
"Saruman. He thought I had absolutely no sense, whatsoever. At least the two of you can agree on that statement"
"Yes, I believe we do"
Gandalf goes back to smoking his pipe and Legolas is leaping from rock to rock actually watching unlike Gimli who seems to be distracted.
I walk back over to Boromir and the hobbits. Frodo is sitting on a rock observing Merry and Pippin fighting with swords. Aragorn was sitting on another rock watching. I must say, Boromir was trying hard to make sure they could defend themselves. Sadly, they still were slow in moving and blocking but they were just beginning to learn how to wield a weapon. Bo
"Kaydriella, you come down here and help me. This was your idea, after all" I smirked at him because of the idea that just flew past my mind.
"Happy to help!" I responded with extreme eagerness.
"What is that face for?" Boromir was growing suspicious
"What face?" I acted ignorant of it and quickly flipped of the rock to the ground where the hobbits were. Boromir didn't respond. I turned towards the hobbits and gestured for them to come closer to me. I had an excellent idea that I know they would like to participate in. I knelt down and began to whisper to them my brilliant plan.
"Okay, boys, a great lesson you shall learn from me is that together you are stronger than alone. No matter height of the mountain-" I gestured towards Boromir "only together will you be able to bring it down" I winked at them and knew they understood my meaning. I stand up but don't bother turning around because Merry and Pippin are running together towards Boromir and began fighting like mad men. Their technique was absolutely atrocious but they were having fun. Boromir managed to slice a bit of Pippins hand. Pippin dropped his sword and kicked Boromir in the leg even though Boromir apologized right away. Next thing you know the two have completely brought Boromir down to the ground and wrestling. Aragorn came over to intervene but they flipped on him on his back too. I was not going to break up their fun. I looked back at Gandalf, Legolas, and Gmili and their faces changed radically. I look in the same direction and see a small gathering, well I don't know what it is.
"Tis' just a whisp of cloud" Gimli was confident it was no threat. But I was still unsure. Boromir saw it too.
"It's moving fast, against the wind" Sudenly the small spec of cloud turned into an immediate threat.
"Crebain from Dunland"
Legolas is the first to see what the cloud really is. Aragorn yells for everyone to hide and suddenly we are in a panic to find a hiding spot amongst the rocks. I run over to help Sam pack away all his things and quickly run him to a hiding spot. I see Boromor take Merry and Pippin into a spot and Frodo went with Aragorn. All was left was to find a spot for me. Wait, where can I hide? I began to panic when someone came up from behind me yanked me into a rock. There were bushes in the way and I got a few cuts from the thorns. I realized that it was Legolas who pulled me back and he pulled me behind himself. He held onto my arm even though I was behind him. He gripped it quite tightly but I was too nervous to realize it. The birds circled the area three times before leaving. Gandaf was the first to rise back up.
"Spies of Saruman. The passage south is being watched. We must take the pass of Caradhras"
He gestured upward towards the snowy peaks to the north. No one dared to argue with Gandalf's decision. Even Gimli was silent on this decision. As we gathered our things, Legolas came over to me to talk.
"I am sorry for the rough treatment earlier. You were still visible and in danger. I did not mean for you to get hurt" Legolas acknowledged the few cuts on my hand and cheek by touching them with his hand.
"It's alright. There is no need to apologize. They are just small cuts, not giant knife wounds. I will be fine" I take his hand from my cheek and place it back down. That was very uncomfortable. No one really ever touches my face, especially not in that manner. My face was getting hotter and I would bet my life that my cheeks were blushing. I cannot look at him. This is utterly embarrassing.
"Still, I wish to apologize" he looked almost upset. I don't understand, they were just small cuts. I've done more damage to myself with a needle.
"If I were to forgive you, would you cast off these feelings of guilt?"
"Probably not"
"Then there is no reason you should be apologizing"
I looked up at him; my face was probably as red as a tomato, and smiled. I love out witting him. His face always looked so dumbfounded.
We began a long walk up the mountains. It took a great deal longer for everyone was having difficulty traveling through the snow; everyone that is except Legolas. I felt bad for Gimli and the hobbits. This type of terrain is extremely difficult to travel through for them. I too was having trouble for my legs were not of a significant length. We were almost near the top when Frodo fell backwards and rolled down the snow. We all stopped to make sure he was alright and Aragorn helps him back up. Frodo brushes the snow off and goes to grasp the necklace that holds the ring. His face turned scared and nervous due to the absence of the necklace. He looks around the snow for a moment until Boromir finds it in the snow.
"Boromir" Aragorn is the first to break the silence. Everyone's eye is now on Boromir. He begins to speak as if in a trance or if something was compelling to him.
"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over such a small thing-" he holds the ring up to his face.
"-such a smalle thing" Boromir goes to grab it and I automatically put my hand on his shoulder while Aragorn yells his name. He nearly grasped the ring but once broken free of the trance came back to reality. He looked around us and back at me.
"Give the ring to Frodo" Aragorn said it with complete conviction. Boromir looked back at me once more and I nodded for him to follow Aragorn's order. Boromir walked over to Frodo
"As you wish, I care not"
Frodo quickly grabbed back the ring and put it around his neck. Boromir tries to brush this all away and even swipes some snow out of Frodo's hair. As we all turned back around I looked at Aragorn with the same worried brow. I must admit, I saw the look on Aragorn's face and although my face did not hold his expression, I too had the same feeling. Aragorn loosened the grip on his sword as Boromir walked away. The group begins to walk again, Frodo staying particularly close to Aragorn. Good choice.
We make it to the top but a powerful wind is slicing through us, snow flying everywhere, making it hard to see. We are now trudging through the snow, which has now reached my waist. Gandalf was pushing through at the front to try and create a path for everyone but the wind was pushing the snow right back at us. The snow stung my eyes, it became harder to breath, and I was beginning to get cold. I am an elf, I shouldn't be getting cold. I should be prancing effortlessly atop the snow like Legolas. Something foul or evil was at work here. Legolas moved to the front of the group and was claiming to hear something, a voice.
"It's Saruman!" Gandalf yelled out over the howling wind.
Why could I not also hear it. My ears were just as good as his, and as for my hearing, it should highly surpass Gandalf's. Why couldn't I hear the voice? Why couldn't I fight this fatigue and bitter cold? Suddenly, the ground shook and knocked us all off balance. Lighting began to strike the mountain. Snow and rocks began to fall from above.
"Gandalf, He's trying to bring down the mountain. We must turn back" Aragorn yells from the back of the group
"NO!" Gandalf refuses to give up. He steps to the edge of the mountain and begins chanting. He is trying to stop the storm, the storm that is being conjured up my Saruman. Gandlaf's efforts are to no avail for another lightning bolt stuck. More snow came falling down and we were defenseless. I saw snow and rocks falling straight towards Frodo and Merry. They were trying to dodge the other snow and couldn't move out of its way. I jumped over to them hoping to cover them with my body. I didn't know if I had made it in time or not but I felt them both in my arms and tucked them under me. I closed my eyes and waited for the pain. I never felt any pain, which worried me more. I slowly picked my head up to see that the giant snow chunks and rock were not on top of us, but around us. All the others were, digging their way out of the snow and saw the three of us untouched and undamaged by the snow. I let the hobbits out of my grip and they could clearly see what had happened. At first I thought they would run away in fear, but instead they grabbed my hands and helped me to my feet. All the members of the fellowship could now clearly see that I had created a barrier, a shield around the hobbits and myself. The giant piece of rock that was falling straight down was now cleanly cut through the middle and sitting on opposite sides of the shield. I looked and saw all of their faces turn. Suddenly, I became a stranger to them. Gandalf walks over to the shield and touches it. The shield does not retreat which means only I can retract it. Gandalf looks directly at me and I know exactly what to do. I close my eyes and inhale deeply to try and relax. The shield slowly comes down and disappears. Gandalf walks to me and nods. I turn and the first face I see is Legolas', again it is dumbfounded. No surprise there. Aragorn and Boromir look as if I had betrayed them.
"What did you just do?" I could not tell if Boromir spoke in anger or in fear.
I went to respond but Gandalf cut me off
"This conversation will take place but not here and not now. Am I understood?"
All nod in agreement.
The wind does not cease and the blizzard is growing in magnitude.
"We must get off the mountain. Make for the Gap of Rohan and take the west road to my city" Boromir is now the second person to suggest a retreat
"The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengaurd" Aragorn argues
"If we cant go over the mountain let us go under it" Gimli is now suggesting an alternative option, that sound a great deal warmer than this one.
"Let us go through the mines of Moria" I must say, no one had anything to say against Gimli's. It sounded like a fool proof plan; then again we have Pippin to fully test that theory. We all sat in silence for a moment until Gandalf spoke again.
"Let the ring bearer decide"
We all looked at Frodo, who looked at all of us. He saw his friends freezing and shivering in the cold. There was really no doubt in Frodo's mind and if there was Boromir took it away.
"We cannot stay here. It will be the death of the Hobbits!" Boromir yelled over to us
"Frodo?" Gandalf patiently awaited Frodo's decisions
"We will go through the mines"
"So be it"
Author's Notes:
So I know it has been a while but here is another chapter as promised. I am starting to get some new ideas. What would you think if I changed up the perspectives a little? Do you think the fellowship is going to forgive Kaydriella for deceiving them? How do you think Kaydriella is going to explain herself? Will members of the fellowship treat her differently? Do you think some won't forgive her, if any? Why couldn't she hear Saurman's voice? Why couldn't she fight the storm like Legolas? But the biggest question of all, How is it possible for her to produce a shield when Saruman had supposedly taken all her magic? I want to know what you think! Also, Spring break is going to let me write more so…. ;) Love you all! Please read and review, it means a lot to me. THANKS!
