KPOV:
it feels as if we have been sitting here forever. I cannot believe Gandalf doesn't remember. He always remembers. I don't know how long I've been asleep but we from my guess, it has been a while. We still have made no progress. Gandalf hasn't moved from his original position. Maybe I should go and talk to him.
"Mithrandir?"
"Kaydriella"
"The hobbits are getting restless Mithrandir. Perhaps we should venture on."
"How was your nap? Did you sleep well? Did you dreams wander?"
"Gandalf you know I have not dreamed since Isengard"
"I guess that can be added to the burdens I have caused"
"Gandalf?"
"Amin hiraetha (I am sorry), Kay. I do not know how to apologize for the wrong I have caused you?"
"What wrong? Amin n'rangwa (I do not understand)"
"When I left you with Saruman, I did with all good intentions that he would improve your skills, not harness them for his own selfish purposes"
"As did I-"
"But I should have known this would happen. I knew Saurman always desired power; I should have foreseen this outcome. I could have spared you all the pain"
"But none of that is your fault, Mithrandir. Gandalf, I hold you accountable for nothing that transpired there. Did you know he was going to do that?"
"Well obviously no-"
"Then OBVIOUSLY you had no part in what transpired and have no reason for feeling guilty"
I began to mock him; mock his tone. He laughed and I knew he was feeling better. I never knew it bothered him that much. I can see where he feels guilty about it. I guess we all need a bit of repair done to the relationships. We have been on this quest for almost a year. We all are in need of a bit of refreshing.
Aragorn is sitting besides Boromr. Legolas stands behind them. Don't his legs tire of being stood upon? Does he ever sit? Ah Merry is smoking a pipe perhaps I will join him.
"Quel amrun Merry"
"UHHH beg your pardon, I don't speak that fancy talk"
"Good Morning, I said"
"How can you tell its morning? It doesn't seem to show day or night down here"
"I'm just taking a wild guess"
"I'm hungry"
"Saesa omentien lle (It's nice to meet you) hungry, I'm Kaydriella"
"Again, I don't know your fancy elvish talk"
"If only you knew"
I wink at him for his ignorance and my witty remark. Too bad Aragorn was not here to witness my triumph over the witty hobbit. I notice Gimli is far away from the group, near the edge of the steps. I know what it's like to lose those who are closest to us; maybe I shed some light on the situation.
"Gimli? Why do you linger this close to the edge?"
"It is a sad day Kay. My heart goes out to my kin who were slaughtered here by foul creatures"
"I cannot bring them back, but I can offer some comfort to you"
I sit down near the edge to be at level with the dwarf. I'm not the tallest elf but still I am taller than a dwarf.
"No offense to ye, but what would a dainty little elf know about a dwarf's troubles?"
"Gimli, you have a bad habit of judging people based on what you physically see"
"Aye, so what if I do?"
"Well, for starters, I am probably older than you and you are probably daintier than me"
"What did ye say?" oh I think I hit his pride.
"Do not mistake my meaning, Gimli. You are a brave and mighty warrior. I am just saying your opinion of me was radically inaccurate"
"Oh? Well excuse me"
"You're excused"
"Hmph elves"
"Hey I'm not fully elf either"
Gimli lets out a hearty laugh. I've served my purpose. I put my hand on his shoulder and look into his eyes. I could have sworn for a second he forgot I was an elf, forgot I was a woman; he looked at me like a friend would look at another friend. We sit on the ledge together sharing stories of our past. One thing we have in common is our need to act before thinking. It seems we both leap without looking; a reckless quality that gives us both such funny stories.
"Ah lassie, I must say ye truly are not what ye seem. Who would have guessed such a pretty thing like you would be willing to get your hands so dirty"
"Oh! It's that way" Gandalf has figured out which passage to take.
"He's remembered"
"No. But the air doesn't smell as foul down here. If in doubt Meriadoc, always follow your nose"
Gimli and I stand to join Aragorn and Boromir at the back of the party. Gandalf, the hobbits and Legoals were at the front. We follow Gandalf down a bunch of stone stairs. I can see where and elf would feel out of place down here. There was hardly any light and the air was so stale down here. Everything was closed in, no trees, or wind.
Once we reach the bottom, Gandalf uses his staff to brighten up the hall. The sight before me was breath taking. Stone columns sky high with such detail in each one. It was stunning.
"Behold, the great realm and Dwarf-city of Dwarrowdelf" Gandalf speaks so that everyone hears him.
I look to Boromir and his mouth is wide open. Aragorn's face is no different. Even Legolas was having trouble taking in all of what Moria was. Gimli's face was full of pride as he looked at everything his kin had created. We walk deeper in and suddenly, Gimli runs to the left, towards a room with a bit of light shining through.
"Gimli" Gandalf calls to him, but Gimli continues to run further away from the group. I quickly follow behind him, and Gandalf follows me.
"No. Oh no. No!"
"Gimli?"
I come up close behind him and see what he is crying over. It is a tomb. I cannot read ancient dwarfish but from Gimli's distraught state and the honorable burial, I can infer.
"Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria"
Oh no.
"He is dead" Gandalf tells the party of the grave news.
"It is just as I feared"
This is a sad day. I cannot begin to imagine Gimli's state of grief. I put my hand on his shoulder as he kneels before the tomb of his cousin, Balin. Gandalf reaches for the book a skelton is holding. I hear Legolas whisper to Aragorn
"We must move on. We cannot linger"
I turn around to look at him in shock of what he just said. I must say something in defense. I took Legolas' arm and pulled him farther away no other ears would hear me.
"Must you be so heartless? A moment please, if that is all you can spare for the grieving dwarf"
"Kaydriella, do not argue with me on this point. If the Lord of Moria fell to the evils inside here, there is no telling that we could easily die here too"
"Can you not see beyond the obvious? Of course I know that but one moment wont-"
BANG!BANG!BANG! BANG!
"-kill us"
Oh no. Legolas and I turn to see that Merry is the cause of the loud noises. We all wait, in silence, to see if anything was alarmed by the noise. The silence ended with Gandalf
"Fool of a Took. Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity"
Gandalf turns and then we hear it. A drum beat. Just one faint beat. It soon turns into more and more beats, louder and louder. Screams from foul creatures are the next thing we hear and the confirmation of Frodo's blue blade tells us exactly what is happening.
"Orc's"
No really Legolas. Really must he always state the obvious? Boromir runs to the door and is shot at with two arrows. The arrows miss of course; typical orc aim. Legolas and Aragorn run to help Boromir barge the door.
"Get back, and stay close to Gandalf"
I run back to stand beside Gandalf and in front of the hobbits. Gandalf huddles them together and throws his hat to the floor. Gandalf unsheathes his sword and I pull out my bow. I admit, I am afraid. Even beside Gandalf, I am afraid.
Boromir, Legolas, and Aragorn all finish barging the door. The run back and take position. Gimli stands atop his cousin's tomb, ragged and ready to fight.
"Let them come. There's one dwarf in Moria who still draws breath"
The door beings to rattle violently and some orc's broke wholes through the door. Aragorn, Legolas and I all began to shoot at these open holes but it only lasted for seconds. The orc's broke through the doors and flooded inside. I quickly dropped my bow and pulled out my short swords, I could kill more with my swords.
I scream running into the mess of orc's with my swords, and Gandalf follows suits. I hear Merry and Pippin follow, then Frodo and Sam. All of us were engaged in fighting and I couldn't see anyone. There were too many.
I quickly jabbed up to my right and pierced an orc right in the throat. I ducked and sliced a leg of another. I was fighting closer and closer to the center, which was the dumb thing to do because now I was completely surrounded.
BPOV:
They just kept coming in. I killed two, and three more reappeared. I could see the hobbits were in the back corner; is that Sam fighting with the frying pan?
I look too long for an Orc lands a hit on my arm. Luckily my chain was able to black the blunt orc blade and I refoucused my attention.
"RAH"
A high pitched scream, it had to be Kaydriella. I fight my way to a fallen column and step on top of it to see over these creatures. I see her in the middle fighting occs' from all sides. She will not be able to last for too long. There are just too many. I am too far from her, but I have to help her.
"Legolas!"
Maybe Legolas could help. I see him on the second level shooting arrows
"Legolas, help Kay!"
I point to the middle of the fray and he nods directly back at me with the most serious scowl. I jump back in and begin to make my way to the middle. I slice my way through most of orcs and finally make it to the middle. We stand back to back fighting the foul crearues.
"Hey"
"Hey yourself Boromir"
"I thought you could use some help"
"Who told you that?"
"You"
She throws an injured orc my way to finish it off.
"I did no such thing" she rips straight through an orc head, man she knows how to fight.
"Well you looked swarmed so…"
She was about to stab and orc that was behind her when an arrow hit it in the head. She looks back to see the shooter is Legolas.
"So you call Legolas to come save me?"
She kicks an orc square in the face. Maybe I should lie.
"Kay-"
"-No, no it's fine. Thanks for the considerate thought"
She pulls out a dagger from her leg and throws it directly at me. Or at least I thought it was at me. It grazed by my face and hit an orc behind me I did not even notice. I watch the orc fall and continue to fight. Man I need to focus. If Kay wasn't paying attention, I could have been seriously hurt.
"Kay, we need to get out of the center-"
I duck from a giant axe aimed at my head.
"-we are too exposed"
"I know. Cover me?"
"Anytime"
Kay and I fight our way out of the middle. Once out of the middle, Kay flees to help protect the hobbits. I go to find Aragorn.
LPOV:
After seeing Kaydriella and Boromir reach the back, I focus on the orcs shooting arrows. I quickly kill them with ease and any one that come close enough I slice with my sword. Suddenly the door is smashed with a giant cave troll. Stones fall everywhere and I see Sam directly in front of the troll. I shoot an arrow at its heart but it only agitated the beast. It goes to swing down on the hobbit, but Kaydriella jumps in and pushes the hobbit out of the way
"NO!"
I hear the troll smash something and I beg the Valar it wasn't Kay. I did not see her move out of the way. I move closer to see through the dust if she is there. I exhale when I see her behind the troll holding Sam. She is alright. The troll comes a bit closer to me and I shot it with two arrows. It got angry and used its chains to try and hit me. The dumb creature wraps its own chain around a column and I use this opportunity to jump on its back and shoot an arrow directly on the back of the neck. It tries to grab me and I am forced to jump off. The creature is still fighting even though I've just shot it multiple times, in vital points.
I notice that Aragon is fighting near Frodo, probably to make sure he is well protected. I also see that the troll has moved on to Merry and Pippin. The two are hiding behind pillars and the troll is trying to grab them. The troll tries to grab them but Aragorn jumps in and stabs it with a spear. The stab is a deep wound and should have killed the troll but the troll swings back and knocks the wind out of Aragorn. The troll turns to Frodo who now stand defenseless. Frodo tries to run but the troll stops him with a spear. He is trapped.
"FRODO! NO!"
Kaydriella sees what is going to happen but she is too far away to help him. I do not have enough space from these orcs to draw my bow.
"UGH"
There it was. The combined sound of Frodo's pain and the trolls breathe. He had stabbed him right in the side.
"NO!"
Gandalf and Kaydriella make their way to Frodo. Aragorn begins to regain his mind and sees what happens. Merry and Pippin jump on top of the Trolls back and begin to stab it out of rage and anger. The troll begins to thrash to try and get them off but it has trouble grabbing the hobbits. It grabs Merry by the leg and throws him on the floor. Kaydriella stops and runs to make sure Merry is alright. Pippin still lies atop the monster stabbing it. I jump down and join the others. Pippin stabs it once more making the troll expose its neck. I take this opportunity and shoot it straight in the neck and the troll falls. Pippin is flung off the back of the troll and Kay is there to help him up. We all make our way to Aragorn who is now holding Frodo's body.
"No. No" Aragorns words pain everyone. He flips over the body and to our astonishment, Frodo is still alive. He is bit out of breath but that is to be expected. A giant sigh of relief flooded through the fellowship. He is alive.
KPOV:
I cannot believe he is still alive.
"I'm alright. I'm not hurt"
"Are you sure?" Sam's compassion for Frodo never fades.
"You should be dead" Aragorn stating the obvious"That spear should have skewed a wild boar"
"I think there is more to this hobbit than meets the eye" Gandalf knew something we didn't because Frodo pulls back his shirt to show us his mithril shirt underneath. The shirt Gandalf was previously talking about.
"You are full of surprises Master Baggins" Gimli takes pride in the shirt made my his kin.
We stay here for but a moment until we hear more orcs preparing for battle
"To the bridge of Khazad-Dum!"
Gandalf leads us back into the main halls and we run. Gandalf, Boromir, and Legolas lead the front while Aragorn , Gimli and I took the back. The orcs were flooding in, their numbers increasing ever step we took. I do not even waste the second to look back and see just how many are chasing us. I glance up and they are coming in through the ceiling. There is no way we can defeat all of these orcs. My glance took up a long time because I ended up not noticing that Gandalf came to a halt and I ran straight into Legolas. I tripped backwards but he catches me and pulls me back up. I give him a nod of gratitude and he replies. We pull the hobbits into the middle and form a circle around them. The orcs would have to get through us before they made it to them. They all were taunting us with grins and smirks of malice. Gimli was encouraging them with his screams.
BOOM
All of the orcs fall silent
BOOM
They all begin to panic
BOOM
All the orcs flee back from where they came. There can only be one reason these filthy creatures are retreating. There must be something they all are afraid of. Boromir approaches Gandalf, wondering what just happened.
"What is this new devilry?"
BOOM
Gandalf responds in a grief tone
"A Balrog. A demon of the Ancient foe is beyond any of you. RUN!"
Run, that is the plan? We are going to try and out run a balrog? I guess Gandalf and I are the only ones that understand the task is nearly impossible. If it really is a Balrog, then our chances of living just dropped drastically. We again follow Gandalf running through a door. Boromir takes the lead down the stair case and runs out into the open. No he doesn't see that the stairs turn
"Boromir!"
He is about to fall over the ledge when Legolas comes up behind him and pulls him back. I run over to them and help them up. I see Gandalf pushes Aragorn and yells that our only option is to run. We run down the stair case but stop because a chunk of the stair is missing. Legolas is the first to jump over the gap, then Gandalf. I jump after Gandalf and then I feel a piercing pinch as I land. The orcs are shooting at us. I think one just hit me. I look down to see my confirmation of an arrow sticking out of my side. It hurts incredibly. I don't want to alarm anyone so I decide to break the neck of the arrow.
Snap
ARHHHHHHHHH it hurts so much, I want to scream but I keep it in. Legolas is already shooting back at the orcs. I would to but my side hurts too much. I turn and see Aragorn and Frodo, the last two that need to come over. Above, a giant boulder smashes though the stair and they are about to fall. Aragorn has Frodo lean forward to shift the weight and make the stairs fall forwards. Smart thinking. They land and we continue to run. The Balrog is gaining on us, but the bridge is so close. We could possibly survive this. Gandalf orders everyone to cross the bridge and everyone follows suit, except me. I stop and look at him. I know what he is going to do.
"Gandalf, you better not do what I think you are going to do"
"Kaydriella this is no time to argue, Do as I say"
"No. I will not let you do this!"
"Time is running out you foolish girl, now run over the bridge"
"Not without you"
I grab his arm and pull him with me as I run towards the bridge. I will not let him sacrifice himself, just to buy us time. We can make it, I know we can. Halfway across the bridge, Gandalf does something I did not anticipate. He stops abruptly and yells.
"Legolas!"
I turn and give him a quizzical look and then turn to see that Legolas is at the other end of the bridge. Gandalf shoves me across the thin bridge and has Legolas catch me at the other end. I trip and almost fall off the bridge completely but Legolas grabs me by the waist. I flinch in pain because of the arrow head in my side, but I don't think he suspects anything. My knees give in to the pain as I fall to the floor. Legolas is still holding me but now tears form in my eyes because I know what he is going to do.
"You cannot pass!"
Gandalf is going to face off the Balrog
"Gandalf!" Frodo cries out to his friend, but neither of us can change his mind.
The giant Balrog appears in its full form. A bull like beast made of fire and ash. A sword it draws and it swings it directly down on Gandalf. He puts up a shield and the sword evaporates. He has weakened it .
"You shall not pass!" He smashes his staff down onto the bridge while the Balrog shows us his next weapon of choice: a whip. It goes to take a step onto the bridge but it collapse completely up until Gandalf's staff. The Balrog falls down into the deep chasm. He did it. He defeated the Balrog. I let out a sigh in relief as Gandalf turns to walk the rest of the bridge. Legoals loosens his grip on me until we all see the Balrog's whip grab Gandalf's ankle.
"No!" I scream and run to him but Legolas grabs me from going onto the bridge. I begin to squirm and forget about the burning pain in my side. Gandalf is barely holding onto the ledge and Legolas won't let me go.
"Legolas let me go. Let me help him. I can help him"
"Amin hiraetha Kaydirella, but he cannot be helped. And I will not risk your life to try and prove otherwise"
Frodo and I are the closest to the bridge and we are fighting to get to Gandalf. He tries to pull himself up but slides back down. My heart is breaking. We all stand silent, I in agony.
Gandalf looks directly at me
"Fly you fools"
And then he lets go. I stop fighting. I stop crying. I stop screaming. I just stood in utter shock. He just let go. I cannot believe this. He just let go. I was knocked out of this daze by Legolas., who was shocked as well. Arrows were still being fired at us so we had to leave. After Boromir left, Legolas pulled me out and Aragorn was the last to follow out of the mines.
Author's Notes:
Here is a nice big long chapter. What do you think? I've been debating on whether or not I should write different interpretations of the same scene from different perspectives or just jump off perspectives while continuing with the plot. Let me know what you think. If you have any comments, please review and message me. I am happy to hear what you have to say! Thanks a bunch! Also I am thinking about starting a Hobbit fic….. What do you think?
