LPOV:
I saw them but two seconds ago. I just saw them. How could they have fallen? They was no where near the cliff. This cannot be happening. I am dreaming. That is what this is, a dream. More so a night mare, I just need to wake myself up.
"Young elf prince, it's time to go
Gimli's voice sounded so far away. I was still standing at the edge, the edge where it happened.
"Legolas, there is no point in staring down. If they fell, they fell. There is nothing we can do for them now. We must make haste to Helm's Deep now."
"Why?"
"Why? What do ye mean why? To help protect these people."
"What is the point. The only people I wished to protect are now gone. Why go protect others when I cannot even protect my friends"
"Listen to me elf, cause I'm not saying this again. Those two knew what they were doing when they signed up for this. Do you think they would want ye mourning over them? Do you think they would want you to abandon these people now? You signed up for the same reasons we all did, to help protect what is left of middle earth. You didn't sign up for babysitting a ranger or staring at the backside of a girl."
"How dare you-"
"-I dare because you need to wake back up. We have a duty to these people Legolas, and now we must see it done. Don't let their death be in vain"
I hate to admit it but the dwarf has a point. Kaydriella would never forgive me if I abandoned Rohan, nor would Aragorn. I walk back to our horse with Gimli and help him up. The ride to Helm's Deep is a silent one; a mournful one. When we get inside the wall, that woman appears. The one that has taken an interest in Aragorn, and a friendship with Kaydriella.
"Where is lord Aragorn? And Kaydriella? I do not see them"
I cannot. I cannot answer her. I let Gimli down and take the horse. He can answer her; he can explain it better than I could.
"They fell"
I didn't need to turn around. I know what her reaction will be. I take the horse to the stables, or the place where all the horses were being put. There really was no room for too many horses. I see those two children playing near Kaydriella's horse. The one boy she saved and the young girl that she talked to during the journey. The little girl came up to me and stared. I was afraid she was going to ask me where Kay was so I just walked around her. I tended to my horse and Kay's horse. Her horse could tell something had happened to her. He was acting unhinged. He did not want to eat or be brushed. He would not stand still.
"Excuse me? Lord Legolas?"
it was that woman, again.
"Yes? My lady?"
"Gimli told me what happened. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am, to lose friends like them, I just cannot imagine the pain you must be feeling"
She was not doing a good job in giving her condolences.
"Is this her horse?"
"It was, my lady. It was her horse."
She moved closer to see the horse. So close that she was standing directly beside me.
"Maybe we should release him. Let him run free"
"Maybe"
Eyowen gets closer to the horse and tries to pet him but he shakes off her hand. He neighs and backs up as if to tell us that he wants his rider's touch. Little does the horse know that we want the same thing.
"Legolas, do you think there is a chance that they-"
"-I do not wish to discuss this. I'm sorry."
I try to walk way but she puts herself in my pathway.
"You cannot give up on them. Surly you of all people would know if they could survive a fall of that kind. Please, I just want to know"
"To what end? So that you can create fictitious ideas of how the survived and how they will return? Then what? Then those ideas will haunt you and hurt you until you forced to accept the truth. I see no use to cause further pain."
"But what if-"
"There is no if, my lady. Not one that I could see. I'm sorry my answer is not what you wanted but I just cannot rely on hope this time. It hurts too much"
"You have it all wrong. You hope, despite all odds, that fate will turn out in your favor. You hope because even though chances look slim, maybe they will return. Hope does not cause pain; it does the exact opposite. Now is not the time to give up master elf."
I cannot hear anymore. I grab Kaydriella's horse and walk towards the front gate. This time, she does not block my way. I walk him all the way to the entrance of fortress which is where I take his reins off.
"Namaarie"
He begins to walk down the path towards the forest. I watch him as he disappears into the forest.
KPOV:
I shut my eyes and brace for the harsh crash into the water. I purposefully put myself first so in case this was a shallow river, Aragorn has a chance of surviving. I feel my body slam into the water and my head hits the bottom of the river. The pain is instant and my mind goes blank..
I open my eyes and see myself underwater. My body in front of me, I can see myself. Oh my gosh, I am not in my body. Is this death?
"only if you wish it to be"
"who's there? What is this? Where am I?"
"You fell my dear. And during your fall, you did something very noble."
"What do you mean?"
"You put another's life above your own."
I now recall pulling Aragorn up so that I hit the water first.
"Indeed, my dear you have shown me exactly who I thought you were"
"who are you?"
A white light shines through the blue water and at the other end of it is none other than Lady Galadriel.
"Lady Galadriel"
I try to bow, but my motions are not entirely up to me at this very moment.
"We really must stop meeting like this, my lady"
she giggles at my joke and smiles brightly.
"My dear girl, you fail to see that this time, it is you who has summoned me"
"Oh, I'm sorry. I did not mean to. In fact, I have no idea what's going on right now"
"Well, you currently are underwater"
We laugh at her observant remark.
"I can see that, but why am I not in my body?"
"Because right now your body has taken a great deal of damage. In order to heal your wounds faster, your body has temporarily kicked you out. Once these repairs are made, you'll be returned back"
"But how am I not dead? Surly I would have drowned by now"
"That is the amazing part my dear. Your powers are acting as a self defense mechanism. See, look how the water surrounds you but does not enter your body. It is shielding you."
"Am I doing that?"
"Indeed you are"
"Wow. I did not know I could do that. There is a lot I didn't know I could do. How is it that you know so much about me; about my powers? I thought the mages past into legend and myth. Even Saruman had little on my kind."
"It is true we know little. But the one thing I know for certain is that you have great power in you. There is an ancient power within you and your possibilities are endless. The more your practice and believe, the better you'll understand"
"So am I even a mage?"
"I don't know. Maybe we will never know what you are, but that is not important. What is important now is that you prepare yourself. There is a great battle to be fought soon, and you must come out victorious"
"WAIT! Where's Aragorn?"
"He is fine, thanks to you. He is lying on the side of this river, unconscious"
As she says that last part her image begins to fade, just like the last time we met in this form.
"Your body will accept you back in now. Stay strong my dear Kaydriella, stay strong."
Her voice fades along with her picture. Slowly, I am dragged closer and closer to my body and as I get closer, my eyes begin to close and a deep drowsy feeling fills my mind.
I open my eyes and see that I'm back in my body. I quickly swim up for air and gasp as my lungs take in a deep breath of fresh air. I let the current take me down stream. This way I can focus on finding Aragorn. After a few miles of drifting down the river, I spot a body on the shore line. It has to be Aragorn. I swim over and sure enough, his body is lying our, just as Lady Galadriel said it would be.
"Aragorn?"
I flip him over and hear his heart beating. I can also hear his small tiny breaths so I know he is alive.
"Aragorn, you must wake up now."
His eyes twitch and open slightly. He see's me and closes his eyes back up. He then smiles ever so slightly and lays back.
"Aragorn, now is not the time for a nap. We have to go"
I hear footsteps but they sound like an animal. Maybe a horse, maybe a warg. A grab a knife from my boot and prepare for the worst. I crouch in front of Aragorn's body and see that the animal is a horse. How convenient. It walks over to Aragorn and licks his face. It kneels down and Aragorn grips its mane. He pulls himself up onto the horse and we begin to walk away from the river. After a while walking, I see a beautiful chestnut trotting out from the forest. I wonder where it's rider is. As I get closer, it begins to look like my horse. Sure enough, he runs straight at me and jumps for joy to see me. I hug his strong neck and he rests his head on my back.
"Hello old friend"
His reins were gone giving me the impression that they released him because they believed me to be dead. Fae-Hun kneels so that I may mount him and both Aragorn and I can now ride with haste.
We ride through the night and end up seeing a glimpse of Saruman's army. It is massive. Their numbers are great indeed. We would have stopped but we had to reach Helms Deep before the Ura-khai. We have to warn Theoden.
When morning comes we can see the keep. We ride full speed until we reach the ramp up to the keep. The doors open right away and as we enter, whispers and gasps of shock are are greeting. We ride straight on up to the keep and dismount.
"Where are they? Where are they Get out of the Way! I'm going to kill them?"
Aragorn and I looked at each other and knew exactly the person that voice belonged to. None other than Gimli shoving his way through the crowd to greet us.
"You two are the luckiest, canniest, and the most reckless people I've ever known. Bless you, Laddie, Bless you lassie"
Gimli hugs both of us. I never knew we meant so much to him.
"Gimli where is the king?"
Gimli directs Aragron in the direction of the king and he immediately dashes in that direction. I stay a moment to hug Gimili.
"Thank god ye here. The poor elf has been utterly beside himself over you; and Aragorn too"
I laugh at Gimili's insinuation and walk up the stairs Aragorn went up. The steps leade right to the heart of the keep. I begin to walk up the last set of stair and see Legolas. I quickly retreat a few steps so that Legolas cannot see me. He stands directly in his path and smirks. He looks Aragorns condition and continues to mock him. He said that he was late and looked terrible. No better greeting than that. Aragorn laughed at his greeting and I notice Eyowen practically jumping out of her skin seeing Aragorn. Legolas hands back Arwen's pendant to him and suddenly, she pauses. Aragorn proceeds through the doors but I stay behind. I begin to walk up the stair slowly looking at the ground. I really don't know how to approach this situation. I reach the top and look up to see a pair of big, blue, beautiful eyes staring straight at me.
"Kaydreilla!"
His voice made me go weak at the knees. I don't know what I heard more, desperation or relief. He strides over to me and hugs be so tightly. I could feel how upset he was just through the way he hugged me. He held onto my waist like he never wanted to let go and he buried his head into my neck. I couldn't help but return the fervor, it just felt right. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled us closer.
"I thought I lost you" Legolas whispers into my ear. It almost sounded like he was crying. I pull out for a moment to see his face and sure enough, there is a tear running down his cheek. I use my thumb and rub away the tear.
"I'm right here"
I hug him once more. This time he did not grip me as tight. I close my eyes and think about how nice this feels. I know we shouldn't but for just this once, I'll let myself have this moment with him. I have not felt this comfortable in someone's arms for a long time.
