Escape

Chapter 10
It was hard to tell day from night in the darkness. The never ending darkness. She was stuck in this dungeon they call the guest rooms. There was a bed, lavish with it's red comforters and pillows, as well as a desk. It was all grand, compared to the dank room it was settled in.
Kaoru had settled onto the familiar bed. This was her room, the one she had stayed in for a long long time. It was empty now. There was no sign of other beds, of other lives. Instead she was left alone. There was a chain on her leg, she could not escape. Not unless they released her and she ran, but they would be careful this time. It had been too easy last time.
She could almost swear she heard a faint whimpering howl.
She lay, staring at the ceiling. There was nothing else for her to do. She should have known there was nothing to do by coming back, but there she had to see if it was true. She had to see if unforgivable acts were really done.
Kaoru would have to kill them. It was their bodies, but their souls were long gone. She shouldn't be hesitant about it, but her heart was torn. The bodies were still theirs. Those habits were still the same. The way they walked were still the same. How could she kill them when it seemed like they never died at all.
The clanging of metal has her sitting up. There was Yahiko, or his body, leaning against the open door. "Kanryuu-sama would like to see you now."
His voice was exactly the same. His stance was the same. But she had to remind herself that it was not him. It was not him.
The walk there was quiet. The eyes that were not his glanced over once in a while. The habit was so familiar, and she wanted to react as she usually would.
Calm yourself, Kaoru, she tells herself. You have to stay calm and find a way to set everything right.
That was when she felt it.
It lasted only a second. She couldn't tell if it was her imagination at first. The wolf inside her had leapt to attention immediately, and she paused for a brief moment. She looked out the window. No, it wasn't possible. The ache in her chest seemed to lessen a little though, and she continued walking.
She could almost hear his voice, calling out to her, telling her that he was coming for her.

He could tell she was close. It had taken him longer to get here than he wanted. Traveling with a human made the travel a lot slower, even if her mate was carrying her on his back. Kenshin's wolf was on edge. There was a lot that he wanted to do. He wanted to tear apart the entire mansion standing before him. He wanted to find and hold his mate. He wanted to punish her. If only he could do that all at once.
But he was here now. He was here to save her now. There is nothing more that he can do. Timing is key. Now he just had to wait.
There was a brief moment, when he could feel her again. He watches the windows with keen eyes and catches sight of her. She too seems to stop and looks to him. There. There was his mate. He relaxed a little as their ki felt for each other, even for a second. Their link was still there. It was weak, just a barest thread, but there nonetheless.
I'm coming, he thinks to her. I'm coming for you.
Minna-san, I am sorry that this took so long. I hope I am not past the deadline. It's a short update today, but hopefully it will let you know that I am alive.
I shall be updating my other stories later today.
Arigatou gozaimasu!
Icy-Kitty117: Thank you, thank you. As you can tell, I'm a little slow with update though
ZilverWolf: I think you'll have to reread the entire story every time I update, simply because I don't update often enough! I'm sorry, but thank you for liking this story!
Dragonegyptianblue: I can't stop apologizing for updating so late. But thank you so so much for reading this story.
Kokoronagomu: Oh my, granny daycare does sound quite… busy. Congratulations (I think) on another grandchild. Please don't worry about reviewing. It's nice to know that you read my stories at all. Thank you so much for your constant support. I really, really appreciate it.
Hitokorimidnight: Well, as this is a rated M story, I think I will consider that option hehehe. It would make things a lot more interesting, wouldn't it? –giggles creepily in my little corner-
Saris Yuri: I completely agree! That is why I haven't completely given up on writing my stories. There are so many authors out there that write great fanfic, but have given up on the RK circle. Although mine are not good, I'm happy to keep this fandom alive.
UrmixMoonstone: Haha, thanks! Isn't Kenshin all sexy when he gets possessive? I just love it!
Once again, thank you for reading. I'm trying really hard, I swear, but sometimes updates won't come as often as I would like. I hope you will still continue following this story.
Domo Arigatou Gozaimasu.
