Chapter 6
"Hey sissy," Cook called out from the other end of the table. They were once again sitting in their little yard having their dinner together.
"What?" Naomi answered through her mouthful of rice which she have yet to swallow.
"What's Emily's number?"
"Why?" Naomi paused from her stuffing of food to look at Cook.
"I wanna meet your birdie, that's why," Cook replied. "So what's her number?"
Naomi resumed devouring the morsels of scrambled eggs from her plate, "I don't know," she said in an uninterested tone.
"How could you not know?" Cook looked up at his sister, seemingly shock. Then realisation fell upon him, "D'ya not want me to meet your chick? You think I'm embarrassing that's why you don't wanna give me her number, yeah?!" He was not so much hurt by the idea, more outraged.
"I really don't know, now would ya shut up and eat your dinner." Naomi continued, not the slightest fazed by Cook's question nor tone.
Cook huffed before he took to returning his attention to the food in his plate. There was a moment of silence between the siblings that was until Cook spotted the small phone that lay at the foot of the table near Naomi's foot. Almost screaming out to him with neon signs to take it.
"Well, fine, if you won't tell me then I would just have to find out about it myself." He broke the silence and made a quick move to snatch up Naomi's phone before she knew what Cook was trying to do.
There was a slight hitch in Naomi's eating pattern but she did not make an effort to stop Cook from going through her contacts. Cook typed in Gina's birthday when asked to present the password and proceeded to the contacts application. "So, what do you call that lovely girl of yours? 'Hun'? 'Baby'? Maybe with those heart-shape emojis?" Cook listed off with a grin, thinking he has once again outdone himself.
However, a good minute passed when he have made it to the bottom of the list and back up yet still did not come across any particular name that indicates as Emily's number. On the third scroll back down, he found a Fitch though not the one he was looking for, "Katie Fitch? The manager?"
Cook was looking at Naomi with a questioning look as Naomi finally made an effort to snatch back the mobile from his hands. "Eat your dinner, Cook."
"What, are you embarrassed of me like for real?" the hurt was shown clearly on his and Naomi felt a need to put his qualms to rest.
"It's not that," putting her cutleries down at the side of the plate, looking at his younger brother in the eye.
"Then why wouldn't you introduce us?" his tone was that of a petulant five-year-old child.
Naomi sighed, "We had a fight, 'kay?"
Cook's expression changed within the second, "What? Why? Are you guys breaking up?" Naomi resumed with her demolishing of the food with a slight roll of her eyes, seeing that Cook was back to normal. "You can't break up with her, Naoms," he went to grab her hand, disrupting her from her meal. "I mean, who else would be daft enough to date you?!"
"Cook," Naomi went to say in a warning tone as she pried his hands off of hers.
With Naomi's indifference to the topic, Cook came to the conclusion as such, "She's a bitch, isn't she? Being wilful and all. She must've bullied you as well. With those bad temper and shit like that, yeah?" Cook's agitation growing by the second with the thoughts of his own sister being bullied by some pompous celebrity.
"She is nothing like you've said, alright?" Naomi answered, seeing how defensive Cook was.
"You know you don't have to lie to me, Naoms. An actress like her would probably act all high and mighty, yeah? Treat you like a slave, however, she wants to treat ya." Cook's arms were flailing by his sides as he thinks about the possibility of the sister he loves so dearly being mistreated.
"Not everything is as it seems, okay? She was going through a rough patch and has no one to share her difficulties with. She was being a little harsh to me and I end overreacting." Naomi has stopped with her meal, giving the situation some real thought and seeing that maybe the refusal of helping was bringing things a little too far.
"Naomi. Are you fucking crazy?!" Cook's outburst was met with Naomi's questioning look. "You shouldn't have fought with her even if she's mean to you. You should have accepted it, she must've been stressed out and you being angry wouldn't have help yeah?"
Naomi chuckled, "A minute ago, you were on my side."
"Well, after you explained, it sounds like you were at fault. Being a jerk, yeah. Make up with her." Cook said with finality as he went to clear the last piece of the chip on the plate. Naomi looked at Cook affectionately, loving how Cook seemed to simplify everything in life to a clear yes and no policy.
Naomi walked out to their yard once she has helped Cook with the cleaning of the dishes. She spent a good minute just standing there, processing what she and Cook have discussed over dinner. She moved to the short table and lay there on her sides, looking up at the clear night sky and brooding about the sports meet that is happening tomorrow.
Given their last conversation, she was not sure if she should expect Emily to show up or not and so she was left to wonder that night.
Morning came and the elder Fitch twin received a call from Naomi, asking to speak to Emily. "It's Naomi," Katie offered the mobile phone to Emily who was sat by her vanity table in her room. In the span of five seconds, all Emily offered was a look of indifference. Katie made to move the mobile slightly closer to Emily with a small jerk in her arm.
Emily took the phone with reluctance and exasperation clearly presented on her face. "Hello?"
"Good morning, I know you have a busy schedule so I'll get to the point. The sports meet today has been cancelled so there's no need for you to come. That's all I've called to say, have a good day. Goodbye." And the call was cut off after that.
Emily returned the phone to Katie, replaying Naomi's words once more in her head.
"So what's it about?" Katie inquired, leaning against Emily's vanity table and waited for an answer.
"She said the athletics meet is cancelled so I don't have to go anymore," Emily replied, going about to apply her make up.
"Really? Why did they cancel it out of the blue? The weather is well and it isn't even drizzling…" The twins both looked out the window from Emily's room, seeing the sun rays shine brightly into her room and the white clouds floating weightlessly in the blue sky. "You really think it's cancelled?" The idea that Naomi was lying dawned on Katie as well as Emily at the same time.
"She said so herself…" Emily looked backed to the mirror, applying her foundation.
"Let's go meet the producers for brunch then. Get ready and meet me downstairs in 10, don't make me wait." Katie pushed off from the table and made to walk out.
Emily was about to pick up her make up brush when she spotted a little paper bag laying on her table. Pulling it out from the little corner it was tucked into.
"Oh. That's the gift Campbell brought you." Katie explained from where she stood by the opened door. Katie left, closing the door behind her as Emily went to retrieve the items in the bag.
There was a small card in a white envelope, putting it down, Emily went to take the little small box from the bag. She opened the cover to see a tiny gold camera keychain and picked it up to have a closer inspection at her present. She placed it back and the envelope to read the card from within.
Dear Ms Emily Fitch,
Congrats on receiving your award, it should be no surprise for all you fans that you would have won. Here's to hoping that you will receive much more and that you future ahead would be a good one to you.
Your friend,
Naomi Campbell
Given British weather's ability to be horrible almost all the time, it was surprising to all that the sun could have shone so bright that afternoon. The gang from the postal office lining up by the sidelines with a frown upon their face waiting for their turn as Naomi walk to take the stand for her turn.
"Let's go!" Naomi cheered with enthusiasm as she walked pass her department mates. They were playing field hockey at the nearest park from the postal office. Her enthusiasm was not reflected from her department mates, resulting from the low morale as the famous celebrity has failed to show as promised.
"She seems so excited to be playing," JJ commented. "And all I could feel is the disappointment, I've got my hair done for today…"
"Yeah, I couldn't flippin' sleep last night because I thought Emily Fitch was going to be here and we were going to have a good time together but now I don't want to do anything but sleep," Panda added.
"She's acting like this all because she is dating a superstar and thinks that her girlfriend is to fucking good to being hanging out with us," Kieran said whilst watching Naomi go for the goal at the opposition's team. "There she goes, scoring the goal, acting like it is some bloody big leagues… Good for her then," he continued, sarcasm obvious in his tone.
"Goal!" Naomi shouted, running to her teammates with happiness that her team did not find. "Goal, goal, goal!" She clapped her hands and running towards the people she called friends.
She knew that she have disappointed not just her friends but the majority of the company. Some had specifically attended today's sports meet when all other year they would have made up some reason to not show up, finding better ways to spend their weekend. The exception for this year was made because how often do you actually get to say that you spent your weekend with the well-known British actress-supermodel?
"Isn't it nice to have a famous girlfriend?" Kieran asked, his lips thinned as he folded his arms and turned away from Naomi. The others mimicked his actions, turning their backs to Naomi. Her last "Goal!" died away and halting her claps as she noticed their reaction. "One to nil," she muttered, still trying to make up for her mistake.
The rising tension within Kieran's department was apparent, even to the Stonem siblings. They were seated under the huge tentage along with where all the other suits are at. Tony was promised the arrival of their guest star, Emily Fitch, by Kieran after knowing that her girlfriend was in his department. He was not pleased to receive the news of her failed arrival.
So far, Tony had known of Effy's friendship with Naomi but never really knew how close they were. Which explains why Kieran was taking the burnt instead of his own sister. Effy had noticed all that had gone on, as per usual and was about to step in to ease the tension; between both her brother's death glare towards Kieran as well as between Kieran's icy shoulders to Naomi. That was the plan until Panda spoke up, "I must be hallucinating from my lack of sleep, Thomas. Either that or that is the actual Emily Fitch walking towards us."
One by one, heads were turning to the park entrance as Emily made her way towards the crowd, capturing their attention with her mere presence. Naomi's does not have the fastest reaction system in the world but she sure turned fast enough to hear a slight crack in her neck and sure enough Emily was walking in alongside Katie. Following right behind them were two guys carrying a number of boxes, stack so high that whoever was watching would have been amazed.
