Chapter four
Valentine kept his cool and collected gaze on his son. He'd egged him on; tried to get under his skin. Clary rolled her eyes at the two men. "Clarissa is nothing Father." Jonathan seethed. "She's a small child in a big world. That's it. You treat her like she's above the world; above me. She's not."
"I'm in the room you know." Jonathan ignored her.
"Why do you think I have you train her?" Valentine snapped back. "You're the best at what you do Jonathan-"
"I don't want to train her. She's a burden." He'd set Valentine back on the floor.
"She's not a burden. In fact, I've got a one on one job for her. It's sitting on my desk." Clary stiffened. "We want Jonathan- Jace." He added looking at his daughter. Jonathan nodded slowly. "I've heard he's leading this little resistance from some of the prisoners. You want proof that she won't go against us. I was going to have her turn him in." Jonathan turned to study Clary slowly. She forced herself to keep a blank face. They'd turned this whole hissy fit onto her.
"I don't know where-" Valentine put a hand up to stop her, still focusing on his son.
"He loves her. I believe he hasn't shown himself to her because you've been with her all this time." Jonathan nodded. "She's wander the streets for a few weeks and see what happens. If he approaches her she'll act like she wants him to help her escape me. She'll go back to his little hideout and find a way to report back to us. You can do that. Can't you Clarissa?" She tried to control her erratic heart.
"Yes, Father."
Clary's head jerked back as her body connected with the hard ground. Jonathan pointed his sword at her. "Get up!" He snapped. She stood slowly, rubbing her throbbing head. It was the next day and Jonathan wasn't going easy on her. He threw her a Katana. "Actually try this time."
"I have been!" She hissed back.
"Try harder." Clary went at him full force, but instead of using her sword she jumped him. He wasn't expecting it and together they slammed to the floor. She rested her head on her chest, showing a kind of emotion he couldn't understand. "What are you doing?" She smiled and kissed him on the forehead.
"Ending the session and taking a shower. Father needs me in forty-five minutes." She stood up and walked towards the door. Turning back she noticed he hadn't moved even an inch. His mouth was shut tight and he was staring up at the ceiling.
'Good,' She thought. 'I shocked him into silence.' Jonathan didn't like emotion. It was his weak point. She skipped off to the showers, cleaning herself thoroughly and changing into black skinny jeans and a skin-tight shirt. She also threw on a hoodie. She left her hair down to dry and threw on some makeup, then went down to Valentine's office. She was dreading this 'Mission.' She loved Jace and didn't want to turn against him. But she didn't have a choice in the matter.
Valentine brushed a hand over Clary's healing black eye from a few days ago. There was a new bruise forming on the edge of her chin. He handed her a cell phone.
"If for some reason he takes you some place that electricity works." He clarified noticing her confused face. He rested both his hands on her shoulders, so that she was facing him. "I know this worries you, child." He said smiling softly. "You love him. You don't want to betray him. But this'll show your loyalty. You'll get more freedom. Your big brother will give you respect. You want that don't you?" Clary nodded slowly. He pulled her into a quick hug. "Be back by midnight… unless he shows up." He handed her a snake bracelet, like the one Isabelle had and a dagger, which she slipped into the waste of her pants.
"Yes Father."
A guard followed her down to the entrance of the city, nodded and left, leaving Clary alone for the first time in years. She liked this freedom. She wanted to smile, to stretch and dance but it had been so long since she'd really done any of that that she wasn't sure she could any more.
She walked down the small streets, scuffing her combat boots on the cobblestones. After a few hours she began to miss her brother's company, though he was a dick. At five, Clary stopped at a small pub and picked up a sandwich, deciding to sit out on the bench. She figured Jace wouldn't be out until sundown, about thirty minutes from then.
Did she want to find him? What was he like now? Did he really still love her? All these thoughts were running through Clary's mind as she nibbled on her food. Would he hate her after this? Suddenly she lost her appetite. She couldn't think like this. Taking one more bite she stood and tossed it in the trash, heading back the way she'd come. Maybe if she kept to her Enforcer schedule… Damn did she want to scream!
Jace crouched on the roof, watching, waiting. This was the first time he'd seen her out alone. Isabelle wasn't there tonight. He'd slipped out before she could wake up. She'd wanted to come with him again that night but her eagerness drove him a little crazy.
It was about ten, ten thirty. Clary hadn't moved in the last thirty minutes. She was leaned against the wall by a small bar, the one she and Sebastian had fought the day before.
Before he could argue himself out of it, Jace jumped off the roof, landing softly in the alleyway. He took a deep breath and stepped out into the light. Her back was to him. She was fidgeting with her wrist. He took another step forward. He saw her tense.
Jace changed his mind. He couldn't. Not now. Who knew what she was like now. What she was hiding. He turned and walked away.
"Jace?" The voice was soft. It was his turn to tense. It was too late. She'd seen him.
I thought about making it a few days before she found him but figured, why drag it out. It'll just make the story boring and add unneeded text. J
