Chapter 17
Clary strode over to the far wall of the training room and pulled out three knives. Standing back where she'd started she through each one with force, watching as they each hit an inch surrounding the target. She took a deep breath and repeated her actions.
"Someone's in a mood." Jonathan said from the door. Clary ignored him and threw again. It still missed the target. "You never were good at that." He laughed. Clary turned then and Jonathan lost his smile. Her eyes were slightly puffy, as if she'd been crying a while earlier. At the moment her face showed anger more than anything? She spun and pulled the knives out of the wall and set them on the weapons shelf. However before she could make it out of the room and into the hallway, Jonathan grabbed her arm.
"Jon-let go." She said glancing quickly to the blacked out Window on the other side of the room.
"What happened?" Clary snorted. For once he felt like acting like a brother. He sounded genuinely concerned. However, Clary knew from experience that Jon was never nice unless he had his own interests in mind.
"Like you give a rats ass." She hissed yanking her arm out of his grip. She stumbled back a few steps. Jonathan's face stayed neutral. "Ever since I've gotten here you've treated me like shit Jon. Don't think that by acting all caring, I've forgotten about it." She spun around and took off down the hallway. It was almost ten oclock. She'd missed breakfast. But she wasn't hungry. Clary wanted to lock herself in her room and take a long hot shower. Unfortunately that wasn't how her day was going to go. She opened the door to her bedroom and stopped cold.
"What are you doing in here?" Clary asked sharply. William had his back her. She walked briskly over to him and pulled the sketchbook out of his hands.
"You are quite the artist." He said, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jacket. Clary threw the book onto her bed.
"What are you doing in here?" She snapped again. William lost his smile.
"You father told you this morning didn't he?" Clary's eyes darkened.
"Doesn't give you an excuse to come in here." He kept his face neutral.
"Sure it does." He said. "As you're my fiancé."
"Where are we going?" Simon whispered as he, Isabelle and Alec ducked into an ally. Alec scratched at his parabati rune as he answered.
"We need weapons." He said. " Without them we're good as dead."
"There's an ammunition warehouse on the very edge of the city" Isabelle added… or there used to be." She gave her brother a worried look. "The rumor is that they blew the place." Simon scrunched up his nose.
"But why would they blow up ammunition that they could use?"
"Exactly." Isabelle let her brother go ahead of her. She wanted to keep an eye on him, though she'd never tell Alec that. The pain that he'd been in the last few days had been awful to watch. All that everyone could hope for was that Jace was still alive. They slipped into the street.
"But why would we do this in the middle of the day?" Simon continued. Alec rolled his eyes.
"Because," Isabelle said "They're less likely to expect anything… if anyone's actually there."
"But there's only three of us-"
"Simon!" Alec snapped. "Will you be quiet? The only reason we brought you was to hold a bag. If you can't do that and be quiet please go back to the house."
"Alec!" Isabelle growled. "On edge much?" Alec didn't respond. They kept pushing forward, sticking the allies as their main source of cover. Eventually they reached the edge of the intact city and came to the remains from the war. Burned down houses and what was left of the "Capital Building" scattered the ground up to the woods, which as Isabelle remembered used to be much closer. Valentine had burned part of the forest.
"I've heard there are more guards in the forest than the city." Simon muttered. Alec rolled his eyes. Isabelle nodded.
"Yup, we've got to be careful." With their heads low and their steles out in front of them, well Alec and Isabelle, they rushed forward, stopping where they could find cover to check their surroundings. They made it to the woods without any trouble and got far enough through it to see the outline of a large structure.
"There it is." Alec said. "I don't see any guards-"
"Then maybe you should look behind you." They turned around to see two Enforcers pointing crossbows at the their heads. Simon gulped.
"How did you not hear them?" Alec snapped at him.
"Shut up." The Enforcer growled. "And put your hands in the air."
"Forced." Clary snapped at William. "I'm your forced Fiancé." He shrugged and turned to open the balcony doors. "You don't seem to care." He laughed.
"I don't." He turned back to face her. "I truly don't care that you're upset." Clary swallowed. There was something in his eye that was unsettling. "You see, getting you, gets me more control. Eventually Valentine will die. And eventually you will take over-"
"Jonathan-"
"Is not the heir" He laughed. "Did you really believe that a Shadowhunter/demon half-bred would take over after your father's death? That's completely Ludacris." And Clary completely agreed with him. She was clearly aware of William getting closer to her. She regretted shutting the door. "We will get married, take over this place, and rule the goddamnfucking world." He grabbed her arm.
"I hate you." She whispered. "I hate you."
"You see, everyone likes me, everyone." She pressed her back against the door as he grabbed her arm. "I'm smart, I'm strong, and I'm going to be married to a beautiful young women who hangs on my every word like I'm a Fucking Angel. So listen to me." Clary pursed her lips. "You aren't going to complain or fight this marriage. You aren't going to fight me. You are going to pretend to be happy. You got it?" When Clary didn't respond he slapped her. "I asked if you got it?" Clary nodded once causing William to smile. He pulled her away from the door.
"Now that that's settled," He said. "I'll see you at dinner, because your father so kindly invited me and my family."
"Put your weapons on the ground slowly." The taller of the two Enforcers said. Alec and Isabelle obliged. "And the whip." Cursing Isabelle removed the whip from her wrist and set it next to her stele. "Now turn around and keep your hands where I can see them." There was a whooshing sound and grunting that followed. Alec, Isabelle, and Simon turned in unison to see Clary's mother pulling a large blade out of the smaller of the two Enforcers back. They both fell to the ground.
"You have no idea how glad we are to see you." Isabelle said. Clary's mom nodded once.
"Decided to follow you. Good idea too from the looks of how you handed things." Simon scratched his head.
"Yeah well…"
"Lets just go get those weapons the Clave so desperately needs… huh?" Alec and Isabelle shared a look of worry.
