Chapter 23

They all stood around Clary's limp body. No one was quite sure what to do. Should they pick her up? Alec turned to Magnus. "You weren't suppose to hurt her." He said. A few small tears were trickling down her face. Magnus put his hand up.

"That wasn't me." He glanced down at Clary. "She started screaming before I began the spell." Alec scrunched up his face in confusion. It made no sense. He pulled out his stele and bent down next to her.

"What are you doing?" Simon asked, not taking his eyes off of Isabelle. She was holding her face in pain while Jocelyn tried to draw an Iratze.

"Immobilizing Clary. We can't risk her attacking us." Simon would've argued but after what she'd told him, he didn't want to take a chance either. Alec took Clarys stele from her pocket and searched the rest of her,. "This is really nice." He said, studying the stele. A now healed Isabelle walked over and took it from him. It was quiet. Only a handful of Enforcers were still alive, however unconscious.

"Where's Valentine?" Luke said coming into the circle. There was a moment of silence.

"If he hasn't changed at all he'll be in the study." Jocelyn said.

"Where is that?" Simon asked. "This place is huge."

"We also need to find Jace." Alec said. The group walked up the steps. Jocelyn chose to stay with her daughter. Magnus followed the group. At the top of the stairwell was a long hallway and from what Simon could see there were only 3 doors. They opened up the first door. It was a bedroom. They shut the door and went to the next one. Simon immediately noticed the easel. He walked in.

"What are you doing?" Alec asked. "We're looking for The Study." Isabelle followed Simon.

"This is Clary's room." She said. One the far end of the room was a balcony. Rain pelted the doors. Simon walked over to the unmade bed. Seeing a piece of paper sticking out of the mattress he pulled it out and smiled. It was a sketchbook. He opened it to the first page and began laughing. It was some guy with horns on his head. Simon flipped to the next page. It was Jace Smiling.

"This is definitely her room." He said showing them the drawing of Jace. Almost immediately they started pulling out drawers. Overall they found ten sketchbooks, her art supplies, weapons, and a lot of clothes.

"What's up there?" Isabelle asked. She stood by the balcony doors looking up. "I think there's a room up there." Alec came to stand by her. He shrugged.

"Probably nothing." He said. "We have more rooms to search." Isabelle and Simon followed Alec out of the room. Simon set the sketchbooks out in the hallway. He didn't want to forget them. The third and final room was dark. Even with the light on. They concluded that it was Sebastian's room and promptly closed the door. At the end of the hallway was a small stairwell on the right and double doors farther down the hallway on the left. They went to the door. However it didn't budge.

"Simon, you try." Alec said. Magnus leaned against the wall. Simon pushed and pulled but the flimsy looking doors weren't as flimsy as he thought.

"I smell blood." Simon said looking around.

"Its probably coming from the entryway." Alec said. Simon shook his head. No, it was definitely coming from behind that door.

"Magnus?" Alec asked. Magnus smiled. He muttered a spell and heard the clicking of locks. Yup it was that simple. Alec grabbed the handle, and readied his Seraph Blade. Isabelle did the same. He counted to three and swung the door open. And froze. Lying on the floor was Valentine… with a sword through his chest. His eyes were closed.

"Looks like someone beat us to the punch." Simon sniffed the air… kind of like a dog and headed towards the back of the library.

"Guys!" Simon yelled. Lying on the floor, with blood staining his shoulder and hair was Jace. His face was scratched up and he already had a black eye forming. Alec was there at once, throwing his arms around his parabatai. Jace groaned in pain.

"Thank the angels Jace!" Alec said. "We thought you were dead." Simon cleared his throat.

"You thought he was dead?" Alec narrowed his eyes at the vampire and turned back to Jace, pulling out his stele."

"Let me help you." He drew an Iratze on Jace's arm. It didn't seem to help much, however they didn't know the extent of his damage.

"What happened Jace?" Isabelle asked. He looked up at her with a dazed expression.

"Valentine… he called me in here…. I was being held in their cellar… it was before you guys showed up… he was going to kill me… but I got away… I- I got away and managed to get his Seraph blade. I-I killed him." Isabelle smiled.

"You did good Jace." She said. "Why-why did you have to go after Clary though?" Jace swallowed. He was sweating. His eyes grew sad.

"Because I trusted her." He said. "And I loved her more than anything else in this world."

"Loved?" Jace swallowed again and made eye contact with Alec. He grabbed his arm.

"Do not trust Clary." His voice cracked as he said her name. "She believes in Valentine's work."

"No," Isabelle said. "That's-"

"She's the one that tortured me. My back, my mind. It wasn't Sebastian that did anything to me. It was all her." He looked away. "All her," He whispered.

Clary woke up to darkness. She lay on a hard pallet, almost like a makeshift bed. She groaned and sat up. She rubbed her head in pain. Her body felt like it'd been slammed by a Semi. She sat up extremely slow. There was a creaking, like the sound of rusted metal from a cell door opening. Clary crawled to get away from the unseen bodies but they grabbed her, one on each arm and pulled her to her feet. She screamed and yelled as cuffs were placed on her wrists

"Let me go!" She yelled.

"Shut up." Doors swung open as she was brought into the light. She was in the town center, a large circular cobblestone path surrounding a small well. Shadowhunters were gathered there together talking. There weren't as many as she would've expected. She could see Isabelle and Alec standing off to the side whispering. Magnus set his arm on Alec's shoulder, signaling him to look. Jace stood next to Isabelle, a hard look in his eyes. Clary and him made eye contact. He nodded slightly. She was so disoriented. She turned away. She saw her mom and Luke, standing with Marse and Robert. She gasped when she saw her daughter.

Clary struggled to get out of her captors grasp, even digging her feet in the ground. They didn't seem to be having trouble holding her.

"Let go!" She growled, kicking out. Another grabbed her feet from behind her and she was lifted so that she was actually kneeling somewhat in the air. It wasn't comfortable. She twisted and turned, screamed and swore. A woman walked over.

"Clarissa Fairchild," She said, drawing Clary to be still. She hadn't been called that in years. She sneered up at the woman. "You are being charged with terrorism. That is Life in Prison. Do you have anything to say?" Clary breathed heavily and looked around the room. Her red hair fell in front of her face in waves. She shook her head once.

"You do not wish to defend yourself?" Another man said. She could assume that they were previous Clave Members.

"From the way I've been treated, I can assume you've already made up your mind." She hissed. "Besides what could I possibly say that would help my case? I've killed and murdered innocent people. What else do you want me to say?"

"Was it of your own accord? Or did someone or something order your action?" Clary knew the correct answer to that but when she opened her mouth to respond she found that she couldn't. She stuck out her chin and looked away. "What are the runes that you have? We have never seen them before." Clary made her face as neutral as possible just like her father had taught her. "I see… Jonathan Herondale, would you recount what you told us earlier? And by chance do you know what these runes are? You've spent a few weeks with Valentine's people." Jace stepped forward. He didn't look at Clary as he spoke.

"The only rune that I know of is the one on Clary's shoulder. It enhances all of the other runes she has. As you all noticed, all of the "Enforcers" have them." He said Enforcer with disgust. "As for my story, I was taken from an ally by Clary. I woke up in their cellar where Clary beat and whipped me to get information of the other's whereabouts. Valentine sent me up to live in the home, to see if I could be trusted. If I didn't do what I was told again Clary hurt me." What was he doing? Clary watched him with wide eyes like she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Would you show us your proof?" The woman asked. Slowly, Jace peeled off his shirt. People gasped. Clary knew what was there. She had it worse though. "Is there any evidence that Clarissa was forced?" Jace made eye contact with Clary then.

"No. There is none." He was lying. She couldn't believe it.

"What are you doing?" She asked in astonishment. She started struggling again. "What the hell are you DOING?" Jace stepped back to stand with Isabelle, who put a reassuring arm around him. "Get the FUCK OFF OF ME!" Clary screamed. They pulled her tight. "I tried to fucking protect you! And now you're lying?" She swung all of her weight into the man on her right, successfully knocking him to the ground, but another pair of hands were around her waist in seconds. "Get the fuck OFF OF ME!" Jocelyn started crying. Luke held her close to his chest.

"Escort her back down please." The lady said and Clary was taken down into darkness once again and thrown in her cell.

Jonathan paced silently in his now abandoned home. Jared stood by the door, watching carefully.

"Sir?" He said after a few minutes. "This is what you had planned isn't it? This is what you wanted?" Jonathan glanced at him.

"Everything is a game of chess Jared. You make a move and your opponent counter's it. You always need to be thinking a few moves ahead. Yes, I had this planned. But not Clary's situation. Maybe this will work in our favor though." Jared leaned against the door.

"How so?" Jonathan smiled.

"Distractions are key in chess, Jared. You make a random move so they don't see the others coming. My father wanted the shadow world. He wanted Idris. I, however,- I want the world. The Shadow hunters are busy here, fixing what my father destroyed. They're scattered and confused. They believe the threat is over." He picked up the Immortal Cup and studied it in the air. "Jared, we're going to New York. Let the other's know." Jared smiled.

"Yes sir."

Please please please give me some suggestions for what happens while Clary's in her cell. Im at a loss. (ps she's not going to be there very long)
