I am SO TERRIBLY SORRY! I took so long to upload this chapter, and it isn't even that long! I just lost my muse fo this story, and I apologize for that. I also was very busy as it had been the last two weeks of school and the teachers decided to pile up projects, exams, and homework like there was going to be no tomorrow. But I'm back now, and ready for action! I hope some of you have also noticed me uploading a new OC story called "Aquagirl: Life on an Atlantean". It's supposed to be a romance story, but I'm not very sure who to pair her up with yet. I would appreciate it if some of you read the prologue for the story, and tell me who I should pair Aquagirl with, but I mainly want it to be a surface dweller.
Yuu101cutie: This is one of the nicest reviews I've gotten in so long! I admit that Wally was stupid for kissing Diana, but it was all for the good of the plot! :) I won't break up Dick and Diana, believe me. I've come to love their dynamic way too much to see them hurt the other.
Guest: I fixed that!
Mount Justice
October 23, 19:34 EDT
Wally's disturbing howl resembled that of a wolf, which made it the even more odd. Wolf was sleeping, which made the redhead seem disappointed. Wally rolled his eyes once, and snorted in indignation. I sniggered, and went over to carefully pet Wolf, scratching the behind of his ear.
"You're not going to join in at all?" Wally's eyes were half-lidded in annoyance, "What kind of Wolf are you?"
"Wally," Conner shook his head, "Stop torturing him."
"Torturing?" I grinned, "More like slowly killing him in his sleep!"
Wally wrinkled his nose, but still sped over to me, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. He held back now, though. There was the fact that Dick and I were a couple, but also that he knew that the kiss had done some bizarre effects on both of us. Wally knew that we both needed some time to get back into the hang of having a normal relationship. No stupid and impulsive kisses allowed.
"Hold still, please." M'Gann smirked at Conner, as she rolled the sandy paper around his head. She was getting him ready for the Halloween party that their school here in Happy Harbour was hosting tonight.
M'Gann had invited Artemis, Zatanna, and I to come with her. She had been bouncing on her feet, and clapping her hands when she asked us if we could make it. Of course, we all agreed, after checking our schedules, that is.
"M'Gann," Wally whined teasingly, "Stop torturing slash slowly killing him! Awkward for him anyway, as he's a third wheel on our date."
I tried my hardest to refrain from laughing at Wally's obliviousness, M'Gann's disapproving look, and Conner's annoyed expression. The dynamic that the three of them had when it came of Wally's flirtatiousness was extremely amusing. Artemis and I often liked to get a snack in the kitchen, and rest somewhere far enough so no one would notice us watching Wally, M'Gann, and Conner arguing.
"Wally, I invited the entire Team to the dance," M'Gann scowled. "Zatanna, too."
Wally's smirk only grew, "Good…keeps us on the down low!"
I laughed, and interlocked M'Gann and my arms together. The Martian smirked at me as if to say, 'nothing I can do about it'. I nodded, totally understanding how she felt. I'd seen it happen a lot of times. When Wally wanted a girl, he was going to chase her until his passion died, or his whole body died.
Conner rolled his eyes, and I moved over to rub his shoulder in a teasingly comforting manner. This both made him look at me gratefully, but resentfully, too. I was the one with the relationship that no one bothered because, finally, Dick and I were together. At least, that's what every one of our friends exclaimed when we broke the news to them.
"So," Wally continued, "You going as my favorite Martian?"
M'Gann shook her head, "Not exactly."
She took a few steps away from us, and stood with her legs apart, obviously going to do something that involved her powers. Instantly, her usual civilian outfit changed into a tattered white bride's dress. M'Gann wore white make up from head to toe, and had dark circles under her eyes. Her powers were amazingly useful.
"Whoa, babe…" Wally scratched the back of his neck, "Eat my brains any day!"
"How about you stop? I'm only thirteen." I winked at the redhead. "I don't want to hear any of this flirting stuff."
"Oh, look who's talking!" Wally exclaimed, grinning madly. "You're the one who—"
"Hey, guys!" Captain Marvel appeared, his face smudged with white and black. He was dressed up as a zombie, as well.
"Captain, you look terrific!" M'Gann complimented the older man. "Are you going to a Halloween celebration, too?"
Captain Marvel's smile quickly crumpled to nothing, and a tentative look replaced it. "Well, sure! I'm going with—I mean, you did invite the whole Team, right?"
"Yeah!" M'Gann still grinned, ignorant of Captain's decayed feelings. "We'll all be at the dance. So, don't worry about us, go, have a good time at your party!"
'Recognized: Artemis B08
Zatanna Zatara A03'
We all turned our heads to look at the newcomers, who also sported resembling Halloween outfits. Artemis, and Zatanna seemed to be matching, as they were both wearing with costumes with a similar color scheme of black and red.
"Oh, look." Zatanna smiled, "Zombie Captain Marvel, that's hilarious! Is the Justice League having a party? Because my dad didn't mention it."
"No, no, no!" Captain Marvel stuttered, flustered. "…Fine! I'm going Trick or Treating!"
We all looked back as Captain Marvel disappeared in the zeta tube, and then, returned to our previous tasks. M'Gann giggled, and I turned to see her wrapping the remaining paper on Conner's bicep. She seemed to be enjoying herself, and so was he.
I looked over at Artemis and Zatanna, feeling a little out of place in between them. They had both gotten to know each other better in the past few days, and seemed to be very close friends. I thought that it was cool, Zatanna warming up to us, and she deserved to have a close friend. You know, even if she flirted shamelessly with Dick. I just felt a little like I didn't belong with them while they were together. They just seemed to have so many inside jokes, and understood each other perfectly.
Suddenly, Artemis turned, a hurt frown on her lips. Zatanna and I shared an awkward glance, but still went together to look after our friend. Artemis needed us both to make her feel better, and even though Zatanna and I weren't the closest, we had to make the awkwardness work out.
"I—I'm sorry!" Zatanna furrowed her eyebrows worriedly, "It just seems so obvious…I—I didn't meant—"
"Zatanna?" I paused, sneaking a glance at Artemis. "Its fine…Just, Artemis likes Conner. It's bound to hurt a little bit."
"A little bit?" Artemis snapped, laughing bitterly.
The three of us were silent for a while, not knowing really how to continue the conversation. Conner and M'Gann's constant laughter was echoing in the background. I never really realized how much Artemis really liked the clone. She never usually talked about boys, usually saying how they were incompetent at a lot of things.
"How about a girl's night out?" Zatanna smirked, and suddenly, a cloud of grey smoke covered my whole body. Artemis, Zatanna, and I's uniforms were on each of us in a second.
Artemis and I smirked, but then, the zeta beam started glowing hot white again. 'Recognized: Robin B01'
Instantly, a pair of gloved hands took a firm hold of my shoulders from the back. Robin was pushing me toward the opposite direction of where Artemis and Zatanna were. I wriggled, breaking free of the surprising attack.
"Not like I'm not glad to see you," I crossed my arms, "But Artemis, Zatanna, and I were about to go out. What is it, Rob?"
Dick's face came closer to mine, and started muttering in my ear, "Batman called for a meeting. Not sure what it is yet, but he said that you should be there, too."
I stomped my left foot on the floor, and groaned. "Do I really have to? Can't a girl have some fun?"
Artemis and Zatanna were on either side of me, then. They both wore sympathetic smiles, and placed their hands on my shoulders comfortingly. Their faces obviously told me that they wanted me to go with them, but I couldn't miss a meeting with the Dark Knight. It would be like committing a crime.
"Fine," I took Robin's hand, and started to pull him to the direction he was pushing me through a few seconds ago. "Let's go before I change my mind."
I heard two separate chuckles, "Have fun, Diana!"
Then, it was all silent in the hallways. Dick and I's footsteps barely made the slightest of scratching noises. I was still holding on to my boyfriend's hand, a small smile on both of our faces. We hadn't seen each other all day, which was quite the long time.
Dick and I were in what you would call the 'honeymoon stage'. Honestly, I didn't want to believe we were in the 'stage' where we are all amorous to each other, and then comes the 'stage' where we fight and break up. I liked to picture us both always being this sweet to each other in the relationship, even with arguments included.
No one could escape the fights, which truly sucked.
As we wandered through the hallways, I realized that I was leading our walk. I had no idea where Batman was, and why he wanted to see us. In fact, I knew nothing, but Robin just trailed behind me as if nothing was wrong. I looked back at him, and confused frown on my face, but he only smiled.
"You look cute when you're confused," Dick kissed my cheek, and then moved forward to be the one leading the way. "I was just waiting for you to realize that you didn't know where we were going."
"Oh, what a gentleman." I rolled my eyes, "Just lead the way, pretty boy."
I could feel the place in my cheek start to heat up. I knew I could locate it's exact placing, which was two centimeters to the west from the center of my cheek, and…I did not want to continue. I honestly sounded like an obsessed girlfriend, and that bothered me. No one had ever made me feel so dedicated to him, not even my previous crushes.
"Pretty boy?" Dick raised an eyebrow at me, smirking. "Did I just get a compliment from Diana Crane?"
"Compliment?" I laughed breezily, "Pretty is feminine, Robin."
That shut my boyfriend up for a few minutes, finally sinking in the truth in my words. I liked the look that he got whenever he was finally realizing something. Dick's eyebrows would rise up, as if in surprise, and his lips would part just slightly. It was a very cute face, I will admit.
"You're staring," Robin sniggered in confidence. "Take a picture. It'll last longer."
I sighed, "I would, but I don't want my phone to run and jump off a cliff."
"Just admit it, Diana." Dick puffed out his chest, "I'm—"
"Late." I heard Bruce's voice from the now opened door in front of us. "Just come in, and no more delaying."
Robin, and I both hung our heads low, trying to act apologetic. Batman was the world's greatest detective, though; he knew that we were just faking it. Dick and I were silently chuckling as he took a seat, and I a place to stand on the waterfall room. There was nothing better than seeing a cranky Bat for Halloween.
As I sat on a chair besides Robin, I nodded a greeting at Kaldur, who smiled back. Then, that's when I saw him. There he was, Roy, just standing in the shadows with a frown evident in his face. I hadn't seen him ever since he took me out to Smoothie King, and I had to say, I missed the redhead.
Before I even had a chance to greet my brother figure, and also Ollie, who stood with his arms crossed, Batman spoke up. Instantly, I could tell that what we were about to discuss would be serious. Bruce secured the room, and wasted no time to begin his explanation as to why he called us here.
"I'll cut to it," Batman turned to us. "Do we believe there's a mole within the Team?"
My eyes instantly widened at the sudden question. I knew that Kaldur had once believed there was a traitor that was part of our team, but never did I notice that it was enough to even raise Bruce's concern. I looked at Ollie, and he just shook his head, not urging me to say a word for the time being.
"I am convinced there is none," Aqualad clarified. "When Sportsmaster claimed he had an inside source, he was merely sowing dissent."
"His intel could have easily come by comparing notes with the villains in the 'Injustice League'." Robin agreed with Kaldur's theory, backing him up. "And think about it. If anyone on the Team was working with those creepoids—"
"—Whoever that person was would have betrayed us long ago." I finished his sentence, which emitted a certain raising of eyebrows from Roy. Everyone was silent for a second, but it was cut short by my 'almost-adopted-brother' who, as always, wasn't entirely too sure.
"I'm not convinced," Roy declared. "Sure, you three and Kid Flash are out of suspicion, but I know Artemis isn't shooting straight. For starters, she isn't Green Arrow's niece."
I glared at Roy, daring him to go on any further with the details. He wasn't supposed to say anything about Artemis' past, yet here he was, spilling secrets like there was no tomorrow. I remembered the feeling of wanting to punch him on the fourth of July, and my fists were just urging for that wish to come true.
"What?" Aqualad demanded.
"Well, yeah." Robin looked confused, "In fact, she's related to—"
"Enough," Batman placed an arm on Robin's shoulder, signaling that it was all too much. Artemis wouldn't have wanted us to say anything more. It was her decision of what she told the Team, and her DNA combination wasn't it. "Artemis' relations may indeed make her a suspect, but she is still entitled to a secret identity."
"I'm more concerned about Superboy," Bruce continued. "We still know very little about what Cadmus programmed into their weapon. Conner could be the mole, and not know it."
A heavy silence passed through all of us. I let that little idea seep into my mind, and my heart gave a little jolt. I was standing behind Robin, so no one noticed my grabbing the hair on the back of his head, and twirling it slightly. If Conner was the mole, I don't know what would happen to M'Gann.
"And what about Miss Martian?" Roy spoke up, "She is Manhunter's niece, but he told Black Canary he has a few hundred nieces, and nephews. And the first time he met M'Gann was five months ago, when she stowed away from his last trip from Mars to Earth!"
"This changes nothing," Kaldur concluded, glaring. "I have fought side by side with these people. None are traitors."
I felt Robin's back tense, but then, he relaxed back into the cushioned chair. I tugged his raven hair gently, and scratched his scalp. I just wanted to calm him down, since I knew talking about all of this was quite hard for Dick. It was difficult for all of us.
"Very well," Batman sighed. "That's all I wanted to hear. You are all dismissed, and…Happy Halloween."
I felt a soft smile curl up my lips, and saw Dick and Kaldur do the same. Roy just huffed, and made to get out of the waterfall room before anyone else. I let him, still sore over him spilling part of Artemis' secret, and calling out my friends on being traitors.
Ollie came up to me, and place a hand on my shoulder. "How about a night out? I already told Canary about it, she says that she'll come with me, so don't feel pressured to say yes."
I felt Robin shuffle under of my hands, which were still clasped tightly on his short hair. He stiffened, then sighed heavily, and looked up at me with pleading eyes. I could tell Dick wanted me to come back to Gotham with him, and go Trick or Treating. We had discussed, and even placed bets, on how much candy we were going to get tonight if we wore our uniforms.
"Actually," I smiled, "Robin and I were planning on going out tonight. Of course, if you don't mind."
Ollie smirked knowingly, kissed my forehead, and made to leave the room. "I'll see you tomorrow, then, and no exceptions! Have fun, lovebirds!"
I felt a slightly warm feeling overcome my stomach, and my grin widened. I often resented Ollie for having such strange nicknames for my friends, and me, but I liked the thought of a couple being called 'lovebirds'. It seemed nice, and fitting.
I felt two hands grasp my own while they were still hidden behind Robin's mass of hair. The hands twiddled with my fingers, and I felt the warm feeling increase and multiply by thousands. It was so uplifting whenever Dick touched me, and not the inappropriate way, but maybe even just a fleeting poke. He could have just rubbed his thumb against my hand and I would be melting in puddles.
"I am wanted back in Atlantis, as well." Kaldur nodded a goodbye at the remaining three people, including me. "My mother and father were very curious on what Halloween was, so I wish to explain the celebration to them."
"Happy Halloween, Kaldur!" Robin and I chorused in unison, while Bruce only nodded in return at the leader of the Team.
When everyone had left, and it was just Robin, Batman, and I, we were kept in silence. Dick was still holding my hands in place, so I couldn't really move from my place behind his chair. Batman had a tentative look in his face as he examined us just interacting with each other.
Robin raised his head up to the sky, and his masked eyes landed on me. He grinned toothily, and I returned the expression with a quiet chuckle. He looked like a little kid in Christmas, comfortable and blissful. I loved seeing him that way, and maybe that's the only reason as to why I held onto his gaze for so long.
"You two have fun," Bruce suddenly declared, "I'm going back to the Batcave. Halloween is the time of the year where everyone wants to commit crimes. They all turn to witches or ogres."
Robin, and I nodded in understanding. I was a little light-headed, so Bruce's statement didn't really seep into my brain for a few seconds. Dick's stare was so intense that I was having just a bit of difficulty concentrating on anything else other than him.
"Sure, sure." I let my eyes wander to the leaving Bat, "Don't stay up any later than twelve, please."
Bruce smirked, which looked strange in his Batman costume. "No promises."
When the door of the waterfall room was shut entirely, I felt Dick pull my hands out of my hair, urging me to sit with him. I decided to be a bit of a show off, the fact that Dick was now my boyfriend alerting me of changes that I had to make. Since I was behind his chair, I did a handstand on the back of the seat, and twisted so I was sprawled on his lap.
"This is so awkward," I laughed as I tried fixing my body position into a more comfortable placing on Dick's lap.
"I don't mind," Dick wrapped an arm around my waist, the other resting on my cheek. He inhaled deeply, "I wish we could stay like this every day, and never leave…"
I felt my cheeks flush up, "What if we need to go to the bathroom? Or what about fighting crime? We can't do that with me sitting on your lap."
Dick didn't reply, but instead, leaned down to meet his lips with mine. It was a very soft kiss, and quite a bit curious and shy. We were still both new to the whole kissing business, so we were trying not to give into our heart's desire, and be careful with the other.
This time was no different; I felt Dick's lips move hesitantly against my own. We usually just pressed our mouths against each other, hoping that it was enough, but it never was. We were so timid about all the kissing; it was the complete opposite of our real personalities.
I parted for air, and a breathless sigh escaped me. Just because we both shied away most of the time while skin met skin, it didn't mean that I hadn't enjoyed every moment. I loved the feeling of Dick's lips on my own, and it didn't matter if we were both so peculiarly hesitant about it all.
"If you could win an Oscar for best kissing," I giggled, which was so unlike me. "You would have the prize every year."
Dick cackled, and placed a long peck on my temple. He muttered a soft little nothing, so I didn't know what he was saying until he took his warm lips away from my head. "You would win the Oscar for most outstanding person in the world."
I grinned, "We're not going Trick or Treating anytime soon, are we?"
"If you keep kissing like that," Dick mumbled as he moved closer to my lips, "Then that's not going to be possible."
