A/N: Thank you everyone for all the reviews, follows, and favs. Thank you also for your incredible patience. I know that my chapters take a while but I will continue on with the story line I had in mind originally regardless of how the show ended. Again thanks everyone.
Eric and Kyrie walked down the cobbled street. Nan, as usual, was dictating what the authority required of Eric. They were no closer to finding out who was behind killing vampires who controlled the areas surrounding them. There had been five more since they had first arrived in San Francisco which the authority said was unacceptable. Kyrie was worried for her progeny's safety regardless of how much he told her otherwise. She saw Godric kill one of his makers after all, just because a vampire was advanced in age didn't mean they were invincible.
It was a common occurrence she had taken note of among the vampires she had met. Many of them were close to one thousand years old and believed themselves to be untouchable. They believed themselves superior to the humans and even younger vampires. The elders were cocky and arrogant. They respected Eric and Kyrie because they had to but more or less turned their noses down at her. She could have cared less what they thought. She felt as awkward as she acted around them. She didn't consider herself civilized by their standards and still felt out of place.
She had begun instructions from an older lady that Eric had hired to teach her proper mannerisms as well as poise and proper grooming according to the world they currently lived in. The woman had been appalled that Erics 'daughter' barely knew how to dress herself let alone carry out a pleasant conversation. He had explained to her she wasn't being paid to criticize, she was being paid to teach. It had frustrated Kyrie to no end to be treated like a child let alone a stupid one at that.
The lessons had helped her get along a bit better. It was a little easier to make conversation and be a good hostess to the guests that frequented the house that had been given to them. It made her feel out of place as they sat around on the elegant furniture sipping aged blood from wine glasses made of crystal. The discussions were normally on politics not just with in the authority but also with the humans as well.
Everything about her current situation told her it was wrong. She had become accustomed to keeping away from the humans. Every experience she had since she had been turned was not pleasant when it came to them however most experiences with other vampires hadn't been so wonderful to date either. Still despite all this she did her best not to embarrass Eric. It was a fear she couldn't seem to shake. She had let him down once, more than once if she wanted to count her multiple failures to instruct him properly, and she did not want to have to face that again. Not ever.
A scream pierced the air. There was panic in the air. A tension that they both picked up on instantly. A woman had cried out into the cool chill night. It was a single yell then there was silence.
"Stay here." Eric stated before disappearing quickly into the fog. Kyrie hitched up her skirt taking a few steps forward. A woman stood fearfully with her back pressed to a lamp post. Eric stood with his fingers bloodied and his hand out in front of him. He brought his thumb to his mouth tentatively tasting the blood of the man on the ground. A knife laid slightly away from his hand. "You're not afraid." He said to the woman.
"I'm no stranger to dead bodies." She quipped back. Eric took out a handkerchief from his pocket cleaning his fingers of the excess gore.
"The streets can be dangerous at this hour. A lady should be more careful." He stated more interested in cleaning his hand then her actual presence.
"If I meet a lady I'll let her know." The woman said. Kyrie watched as Eric walked closer to her and talked to her. She was unable to make out the words but saw him drop some money into her gloved hand. A few more words were exchanged before Eric was back by Kyries side. He grasped her arm again without another word spoken and they rounded a corner.
"Aren't you just dashing." Kyrie stated amused. "Eric Northman. Protector of human women that roam the streets at night."
"I can't stand uncivilized humans." He replied.
"This coming from the Viking king?" She asked playfully.
"We are not savages. We were explorers and conquerors. You should know it's different." He said with not any real emotion in his tone.
"Yes. Yes I do." She said with a nod. "I was only teasing you a vic."
"I know mama. I just have a lot on my mind." Eric said.
"We are going to be late to our meeting with Arnold." Kyrie reminded him.
"For that we will be profusely sorry for but in reality care less." He replied.
"Ah, so the usual then?" Kyrie asked sarcastically.
"But of course." He said. The pair walked up the steps to the grand hotel where the current visiting authority figure was staying. It seemed like an endless parade of meeting, greeting and talking. Kyrie hoped this wasn't how the rest of her life would be like. However long that was going to be.
They entered the lift going to the top floor. The first corridor on the right was turned down and a few doors down they stopped. Eric knocked on the door and they were greeted by Arnold. Kyrie had met him before. He was one of the younger members of the authority but was extremely mature. His intelligence was superior making him a prime candidate to travel the country and deliver messages to the different territories.
"Good evening Ms. MacShire, Mr. Northman." Arnold greeted inviting them into his quarters.
"Mr. Turner. Always a pleasure." Kyrie said politely extending her hand out to him daintily. He placed it to his lips. Eric shook his hand and they were instructed to sit.
"Now, Arnold. What news do you bring us this time?" Eric asked taking his top hat off. Kyrie removed her gloves as he sat across from them on a high back chair.
"I have been told that in your area you may have a troublesome vampire." He stated. Eric brushed off his pants.
"A troublesome vampire? Dead vampires are popping up all over the state and the authority is worried about a troublesome vampire?" Eric asked his tone arrogant.
"Come on Eric. Use your brain." Arnold said.
"Do you think the deaths could somehow be connected?" Kyrie asked curiously.
"See Eric. Kyrie understands." He replied with a smile.
"Alright then. We will investigate it. Anything else?" Eric asked.
"Why yes. There is." Arnold stated. "I recently visited with Godric in Dallas. We got to talking about you."
"Well I hope it was all good things." Eric replied.
"The conversation turned when I mentioned Kyrie." He said his eyes resting on her. Kyrie attempted to remain relaxed. She was fairly certain no one knew that Eric was her progeny. She didn't know if anyone knew that Godric was his progeny or if she was Godrics. The less they knew the better.
"Oh?" She inquired.
"Yes. I had no idea that you knew each other. He had many questions about you. Tell me, how do you know him." Arnold wondered.
"We traveled for a time together many centuries ago." She said trying to come off as if it was just a brief unimportant moment of her life.
"Well you certainly made quite the impression on him." Arnold stated.
"Is there a point to this prattle?" Eric asked uninterested.
"No. Not really. I just thought it was worth mentioning for the sake of conversation." He stated. They stood bid their good nights. Eric replaced the hat on his head while Kyrie put her gloves back on. The pair made their way back down the hall to the lift and were soon back outside.
"Are you alright?" Eric questioned with a deep air of concern.
"Yes. I'm fine. Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be?" She asked back.
"You are not a very good liar." He said simply.
"I know." Kyrie stated. "Godric knows I'm in this country."
"Mama, Godric has known you were in this country for some time now." Eric said. Kyrie glanced up at her progeny.
"I see." She whispered out. She wanted to see him again. She knew where he was, or at least the name of the city he was in, but still…if he wished to see her he would come to her. She would wait and see. If he never showed his face to her again that would be something she would have to deal with. "Is he still angry with me?"
Eric remained silent for a while. They walked beneath the gas lamps silently. Two dark shadows making their way through the darkness in which they lived. After a while Eric gave a sigh. "No.' A simple small reply but enough to give her some hope.
The 'troublesome' vampire turned out to frequent the burlesque houses. The trouble it caused was killing the prostitutes that worked them. As more information was found out the pair found it was less likely that the vampire had anything to do with the deaths of the others vampires. It was decided however to be dealt with seeing as how it could attract unwanted attention. It wasn't uncommon for the 'undesirables' to be preyed upon. They warranted no real attention. They simply were objects to be used and most of society could care less about them. Even though this was the case they were both fairly certain that if to many dead whores began showing up around the city then it would eventually cause trouble.
They entered a few brothels every night where there had been a few deaths but found nothing after poking around a bit. After two weeks of searching they came to one of the last few in Eric's territory. Eric held the door open for her as she entered. Her eyes scanned around at the various women frequenting the bar and as they lounged on the furniture.
Eric was soon by her side. A blonde woman approached them with a smile. It was the woman Eric had saved. "Business or pleasure?" She asked her eyes lingering on Eric.
"Pleasure of course. My companion and I are looking for a good time." He stated. The woman's glance came to rest on Kyrie for a moment and she gave a shrug. She motioned for the women to line up. They stood around attempting to appear seductive. The air in the building was thick with smoke, alcohol and sex. They all had been but Kyrie picked up on something else. Blood. Not old blood but fresh blood.
She glanced up at Eric as he acted as if he were paying attention to the women that were displayed in front of them. He glanced back down at her giving a slight nod of understanding. He could smell it too.
"We have something for even the most exotic of tastes." The madam said. "The chink, we call her rubber Ruby. Show the gentleman why darling."
One of the women came forward her eyes cast directly on them as she brought one of her legs up and rested it behind her head. Eric gave a slight nod of approval. "Delightful but it is you I came to see." He stated to the madam. She glanced away for a moment clearly flattered while the other women seemed amused by his statement as well.
"A good merchant doesn't compete with her merchandise." She replied with her eyes back on Eric fully, only on Eric for that matter. Kyrie couldn't blame her for being taken with him. After all she had been also the first night she had laid eyes on him.
"A good customer knows that everything has a price." He said. Eric walked closer to the other women acting as if he were inspecting them. Kyrie watched as she slightly glanced behind her at him before her eyes came to rest on Kyrie. She was eyeing her cautiously as if she were a dangerous creature. Eric had more or less already revealed himself to her. Kyrie could see the woman placing the pieces together. She was suspicious of them.
"My companion is very interested in you. You should take him up on the offer. You won't be disappointed." Kyrie stated. The woman seemed to come out of her trance.
"I take it you know this from personal experience?" She asked raising a brow at her with a devious smirk. Kyrie smirked back at her in response. "Well then. You grab your companion and follow me honey."
Eric had been paying attention the entire time and followed them into the back where the rooms were located. It was dimly lit as the smell of blood became stronger. Kyrie stopped in front of one of the doors placing her ear to the door. She couldn't hear what was being said however she recognized the voice. She shook her head in disbelief. "No. It can't be." She stated.
In an instant she was in the room with her hand around the female vampires neck.
"Get your hands off of her." The other vampire commanded Kyrie. She felt the other female wrap her hands around Kyries wrist as she was lifted off the ground. Recognition sparked in her eyes before her gaze turned back to her progeny.
"William, don't." She said. Kyrie promptly tossed her against the wall where she crumpled to the floor in a heap. Her progeny moved quickly grabbing a dagger attempting to strike Kyrie with it. She moved faster and grasped at his wrist stopping him. He seemed stupefied by it and stared at the smaller girl who was holding him off.
"Why Lorena, you've procreated." Kyrie stated amused glaring her own set of daggers at the young vampire. He attempted to overpower her and still stab her with the dagger. Kyrie let out a soft laugh in response.
"Who are you?" William asked her. Kyrie felt alive again. She felt like her old self again. Once again she was in control of a situation. She was the elder vampire and this baby vampire had no chance against her.
"I am Kyrie MacShire but to you I am the true death." She said smiling at him. He appeared frightened. Surely he knew he didn't stand a chance against her and that fact was slowly sinking in.
"Kyrie please. He's new. He doesn't know any better." Lorena said swiftly moving between her progeny and Kyrie. She held his hand back turning towards Kyrie as she spoke.
"I understand perfectly. That if this girl has the strength of a man then she is more than welcome to fight me as one." William stated his eyes casting daggers at her. Kyrie glanced over at Eric who only chuckled at the response.
"Oh he is brave and loyal. Strong for one so young. It would be a shame to kill such a promising young vampire simply because his maker failed to properly educate him how to treat his elders." Kyrie stated leveling her gaze with Lorena's.
"Thank you." Lorena stated clearly grateful that they were both being spared. "We were not away that this was your territory." She rushed to gather up their clothes before turning back towards Kyrie. "We deeply regret any trouble that we may have caused."
"I believe you owe this lady an apology too." Kyrie said motioning towards the madam. She stood timidly in the doorway peering halfway into the room uncertain of what to do.
"And five hundred dollars for every girl you've drained." She stated. Her eyes never left Eric as she spoke. Her demeanor seemed uncertain and her breath appeared to have somewhat been caught in her throat but her voice was clear and sure. Eric smirked slightly as the madam brought her gaze to Lorena.
Kyrie could clearly tell that the younger female vampire was displeased at the financial arrangement she had suddenly found herself in. She gave a weak, insincere smile all the same and nodded her head slightly in understanding.
"We are sorry." She replied locking eyes with the human woman. "Aren't we William?" Her head turned to her progeny. He glared daggers at Kyrie approaching her slowly before rushing out of the room quickly. Lorena looked embarrassed and Kyrie couldn't help but feel somewhat bad for her. She knew the trials of having a child who simply wouldn't obey you. As soon as the emotion came over her she steeled her heart against it.
She wanted to ask Lorena what had happened before. Her curiosity peaked suddenly and she need to know why she had been taken for a fool but instantly thought against it. It simply was not the time nor the place for such a discussion, not with so many other things going on around her. She would get another chance. It may take time but what difference did that make? Time was what she had in abundance.
"Get him under control." Kyrie said softly to Lorena. The younger female gave a curt nod of understanding. She was grateful, that much Kyrie could tell, before she too made her leave quickly brushing past the madam on her way out of the door.
"I believe we have a debt to settle." The madam said suddenly from the door way. Eric brought his eyes towards her and walked the short distance to where she stood. He grasped her softly at the base of her neck and kissed her deeply. Kyrie stood off to the side taking in the scene before her. It wasn't as if she had never seen her progeny with someone else, no not at all, but this woman…there was something about her.
She tried in those few precious seconds to piece something together, what was it? She found herself at a loss. She was just a whore whom Eric would have his fun with before they stalked out into the night together again, just the two of them. He turned his gaze slightly towards his maker slightly breaking the kiss he held over the woman. His eyes questioned her. She waved him off slightly.
He spun the madam around and they walked down the hall. She heard a door slam shut and then there was silence. The only sound in the room was the slow breathing of the girl that Lorena and her progeny, William, had been drinking from. She was still in her deep trance. Kyrie crossed the room to the where the pretty little thing lay in all her topless glory.
Kyrie brought a finger as her fangs descended down. She pricked her finger and stared for a moment as her blood, was it even truly her blood anymore, to the surface. It was such a vast contrast to her sickly pale flesh. Her heart hadn't beat in centuries, she didn't breathe, there was no need to eat food. She didn't bleed as she had done as a human nor did she have any other human needs she barely ever remembered having. She was frozen in time. Everything changed around her but she remained the same.
Her small wound began to close. She rubbed her blood into the wounds that had been inflicted on the girl and they closed quickly. Eric had informed her of the other properties their blood held over the humans other than making them insane. It was good to know but a practice she didn't intend on using often. If they were found out, if humans knew their blood was magical, she knew it would only spell disaster for vampires and humans alike.
Once she was sure she had healed all of the wounds on the girl she caught the girls glazed eyes with her own. She instantly fell away from the hold that Lorena had had on her and submitted her consciousness to Kyrie.
"What is your name?" Kyrie asked her slowly. It truly was a trick that had taken her some time to learn but under Godrics guidance she had eventually mastered it. In centuries past it hadn't been of much use to her but fully understood now, in this modern world where humans where seemingly smarter, it would be something she would use often.
"Hazel." The girl replied distantly.
"Hazel, you will forget the couple whom were in here before me. There was only ever you." Kyrie said.
"Only me." Hazel replied. Kyrie gave a slight nod of confirmation.
"Yes Hazel. Only you. You've had far too much to drink. You will feel weak and a bit sick but you will sleep it off." She stated. "Now go to sleep."
Hazel shut her eyes and fell asleep instantly. Kyrie walked out of the room following where she felt her progeny. The smell of blood pervaded her again. She took a deep breath and furrowed her brow. She stopped in front of the door that Eric was behind for a moment realizing it was coming from the room. Kyrie opened in stepping in.
Eric knelt down next to the human. Kyrie watched as he brought his wrist to her lips and she drank greedily.
"A vic? What are you doing?" Kyrie asked suddenly finding herself breathless. She knew of course what it looked like but why? Eric had no desire to become a maker, especially with everything that was going on around them, he enjoyed his freedom far to much. She was fairly certain she was a burden to him although he told her to the contrary. With a baby vampire it would only make it worse on him.
"I didn't have a choice mama." Eric replied clearly annoyed. "She slit her wrists in front of me."
"Who cares." Kyrie stated flatly. "That is her choice. You should have come and found me. I would have put her out of her misery if you couldn't."
"I only did for her what you and Godric did for me." Eric said softly.
"It was different." Kyrie replied quickly.
"How so?" Her progeny questioned. He inquired her curiously the way that he used to in the past.
"Because you are special." She replied.
"And how do you know that Pamela isn't?" He asked. Kyrie only shook her head a few times slowly.
"Listen a vic, if you want to turn her then that's your choice. I hope you understand fully what you're doing because I didn't." Kyrie stated not wanting to fight with him. "You're going to have to go to ground with her. Our backyard should suffice. I will help you if you like."
Eric removed his wrist from Pamelas lips as the color drained from her and her breath stopped. The wounds on her wrist closed slowly leaving only dried blood behind. Kyrie watched as Eric brushed the hair away from her face and brought his fingers down her face lightly. Kyrie felt her head shake again slowly of its own accord.
