Chapter 21: Bad Memories
Onyx lay in the lamplight of the study. It was always the most serene place in this underground palace of nightmares and darkness. The distinct smell of dusty old books was oddly soothing. The many dull colors of the book spines looked regal, similar to those famous and gigantic libraries in Russia, France, and Canada. And the paintings . . . large and bold and full of history.
She particularly liked the portrait of the young girl and her mother that resided on the farthest wall of the study.
Seraphina was so young . . . barely the age of six when the portrait was painted. Even at that age she looked so much like him when he was human. Onyx was just a foal at the time - a figment of Pitch's imagination. Well, Kozmotis Pitchiner then . . . Onyx wondered how Seraphina was doing after so many centuries of silence between father and daughter.
She sighed.
"WhAt ThE fUcK?!"
Jack's voice; entertainment room. Probably an unjust move in a video game or freaky scene in a movie.
What an interesting sound, she smiled to herself. Maybe I should check on them and make sure no one's dead.
Onyx disintegrated into the shadows and reformed behind the couch. The Exorcist? Really? Pitch seemed more entertained by Jack's reactions to the climax than the possessed child vomiting on the screen.
Jack in Pitch's robes was a twist. Why wasn't he in his usual frosted hoodie and pants?
Onyx shook her head in realization. I bet Pitch dirtied Jack's clothes on purpose to see him in his clothes. She stayed behind them, completely unaware of her presence, until the end credits rolled.
"So how did you like it?" Pitch asked sweetly, stretching his lengthy arms over the back of the sofa.
"Why did I agree to this?" he asked not-so-sweetly in response.
"Okay, I admit, that movie isn't for everyone. How 'bout this: we can watch whatever you want next time?"
Jack looked at Pitch and shrugged. Not a yes, but not a no. Pitch seemed fine with that.
Onyx huffed out of her nose, breaking any silence in the room. Jack jumped at the sudden noise while Pitch casually turned his head.
"Onyx! How long have you been here?"
Since the climax, Jack. Don't worry, it's only a movie. Real demonic possessions aren't usually that unsanitary, and are strangely accurate to those in 'Supernatural'.
"Supernatural? Onyx, don't tell me you've become one of those fans in your free time!" Pitch exclaimed, half-sarcastic. Even he had to admit, those Winchester brothers were quite a sight.
Pitch, I think it would be best if you got some rest. You've been up much longer than usual, and I'm sure Jack might have other things to attend to.
"Do you have 'other things' to attend to?" Pitch asked Jack.
"None that I know of." Jack and Pitch each looked smugly at Onyx.
She glared at them, Jack in particular, and blew a small gust of air straight into his face. Grains of sand bit into his cheeks and forehead.
"Right. I'll go get my clothes." Jack got the message and stood up.
"Onyx! What was that for?" Pitch asked sharply.
"Pitch, she's right. I have towns to frost over, and kids to visit, things like that. I should get going, I hadn't meant to stay this long anyway."
Without another word, Jack retreated to Pitch's bedroom to retrieve his clothes.
"I'm not a child, Onyx, that was complet-"
You're right, Pitch, you're not a child. You're a grown man, and a father, no less! While I do approve if your relationship, it's important to remember that Jack is the child here, and you're walking on thin ice with him.
"DON'T remind me of my past fatherhood," Pitch shot up onto his feet. "It's not something I wish to relive, thank you. And what got you so worked up that you brought up Jack's age?"
When was the last time you spoke to Seraphina?
Pitch's mouth went dry. A knot tightened fast in his stomach.
"Onyx-"
How many centuries has it been?!
"ONYX!" Black sand spears suddenly formed around Pitch, all aimed down at Onyx. Pitch's jagged teeth met together perfectly in a snarl, threatening to strike her down to a pitiful pile.
Onyx shut her snout and her ears stood straight up, tense and alarmed.
They stood like that for a few moments, until Pitch's breathing had steadied and the sand weapons crumbled to nothing.
Pitch ran his grey fingers roughly through his hair. Onyx took a breath.
I apologize for getting you so worked up, Pitch. But I don't apologize for bringing up these important matters. I believe this issue will be of great importance in the future. Onyx let her words sink in before disintegrating into the cracks of the floor and wall.
"Hey, Pitch, my clothes are still dirty from when we . . . y'know," Jack leaned against the doorway, still wrapped in Pitch's robe.
"Of course, wear this for today and come back tonight, they'll be clean by then," Pitch waved his hand blindly and the robe became a matching outfit of black pants and a hoodie. No frost patterns, but Jack's size nonetheless.
"Pitch, this isn't necessary, I can stay while they're being cleaned-"
"No, I think it's best that you leave, Jack. Please."
Jack was silent, shocked by Pitch's sudden change in mood. Onyx was nowhere to be found and he looked a bit distressed.
"Umm, okay. I guess I'll just come back later tonight then."
Jack gave Pitch a lingering look, but received none in return. He turned to recover his staff from the bedroom before leaving for the forest.
With Onyx and Jack gone, at least for now, Pitch was left in his grey fortress to his thoughts. Thoughts he had hoped he would never have to worry about.
