Chapter 22: An Invitation Home

Seraphina. His daughter. His whole life . . . well, at least while he was alive. She was the perfect daughter. Bright; intelligent; kind; angelic, even. A prodigy. As far as physical appearance, she was the spitting image of Pitch – no, Kozmotis. He was proud to be her father.

Pitch's stomach did numerous somersaults as flashes of his past fatherhood filled his head.

Seraphina, his wife, the army, and so much darkness . . . In the midst of everything, it seemed like his daughter was the only light in his dark human life.

And after he died, he became Pitch Black, unable to face her with fear of scaring her away from him . . . forever, it seemed.

He shook his head and raked his nails harshly against his scalp.

Those memories were centuries old. Onyx was right (when was she not?), Pitch hadn't spoken to Seraphina for centuries. She was in a higher place, and trying to contact her would be like trying to summon the devil. Besides, being who he is as well as keeping her at a distance, would she even want to speak to her father?

It doesn't matter.

He stopped pacing.

Yes, it does.

Pitch hurried to the study.

No, it doesn't.

He stopped in front of the portrait.

If it doesn't matter, then take it down.

He dug his nails into his palms. He stared into the painted hazel eyes of his daughter.

No.

He let out a deep breath he didn't know he was holding, and flexed his fingers.

Then it does matter.

...

Jack lay sprawled out on a branch. He had no idea where he was in the world, but it was snowy and quiet and that was all that mattered. Wherever he was tonight, the moon was covered by a thin layer of clouds.

Why was Pitch acting so hostile towards him? Towards Onyx? He'd seen Pitch mad before, sure, but that was a long time ago. Onyx is usually level-headed, so for her to get upset over something is something that was probably of great importance.

Jack swung his feet off the sides of the branches in thought. He rolled the end of the string on his temporary hoodie. It was softer than his wool hoodie. He rolled it the other way. He rolled it again. He didn't know what to do. Pitch seemed pretty mad, or at least distressed, about something. Jack didn't know whether or not he should go back and talk to Pitch. It seemed as though they recently resumed the relationship that started over fifty years ago. Would he jeopardize whatever it is they had if he went over there too soon?

Oh well. He'd go back when he could get his clothes back.

The hoodie string dissolved between his fingers and formed into a ball in midair. Jack sat up, surprised. Tiny, glowing, topaz eyes molded into the top of the small ball of black sand.

"Onyx!" Jack held his hands flat together, so the tiny hooves could stand in them. This makeshift Onyx was no bigger than Baby Tooth.

Jack, I don't have much time, but I wanted to be the first to apologize to you for what happened back in Pitch's lair and –

"Onyx, calm down! Coming from you, I'm sure it was about something important –"

Jack, please let me finish! I feel the need to warn you of any upcoming events in the near future regarding you and Pitch.

"What about? I know he was upset afterwards, but – "

Jack! Please! Any moment now Sera–

Tiny Onyx collapsed roughly into thin air, quickly followed by the rest of Jack's sand clothes. Jack backed up against the truck of the tree, covering all the sensitive areas from the cold. He was a winter sprite, why was he suddenly so cold? He gripped his staff.

Again, if Onyx makes a big deal over something, that something was probably something of great importance . . . But who was Sera? And what does this "Sera" have to do with him and Pitch?

"Aaaaaaaand I'm naked in the middle of who knows where." At this point, he had to go back to Pitch's lair to get his clothes back.

...

"I think it's time, Manny. This has been going on for too long."

Man in Moon nodded grimly.

You know how this is going to end. What are you going to do to ensure balance on Earth?

"Hey, if there's one thing I'm good at, it's keeping Earth balanced. You should know that best by now," she winked, before leaving her friend to his thoughts.

...

Hello everybody! ^u^

I apologize for my long absence, once again. School has me busy with projects, district testing, state testing, college essays and preparation, etc.

I told you there would be dramaaaaa~, didn't I? ;3

How are Pitch and Jack going to react to Seraphina? Is Seraphina really as perfect as Pitch describes her? All this and more in the future chapters of . . .

Dream Catcher!

Thank You and Stay Awesome! :D
