Worlds Collide

Chapter 9

LAUREN

"So how was it?" I glanced over my shoulder at Kenzi; she was referring to my goodbye with Bo.

"It sucked, I already miss her." I heard the loud zip of Kenzi closing her suitcase followed by her soft footsteps

"I'm sorry Lo; she did say she was coming to visit right?" Kenzi smiled hopefully at me

"You ready to go? We still have to go to my room to get my suitcase." She nodded and we headed over to my building to get my stuff. I entered the code and we stepped in. I was surprised that the room wasn't a mess and that Abby had left already, she usually lingered until the RA's told her to go home.

"You know I kinda forgot that you didn't live with me." Kenzi said opening the mini-fridge and taking water for herself.

"I kind of did too." Luckily I had anticipated not being able to come back to my room until last minute and I had already packed my suitcase. I opened it up and double checked that I had everything I wanted to bring with me. I took the school books out of my backpack and replaced them with a few books I didn't get a chance to read this semester.

"Hey, your Mom is here, she texted us both."

"I'm ready, let's go." I let Kenzi go ahead of me and followed her out. I almost didn't realize the two letters addressed to me that were thrown on my desk, I quickly grabbed them and ran to catch up with my bestie.

"Lauren, Kenzi, it's great to see you!" My mom greeted us both with bone crushing hugs the second we got to the car.

"Hey Mrs. Lewis, thanks for driving." Kenzi said as she tossed her stuff in the trunk.

"Hi Mom, where's Dad?" I breathed out through another hug.

"He should be here, Dear." I looked around and instantly spotted him

"Mr. Lewis there better be a coffee for me on that tray!" Kenzi ran up to him eagerly. My father was very tall, even with the 4 inch advantage Kenzi's heels gave her she still looked tiny next to him. He handed her a coffee and gave her a kiss on the forehead, Kenzi was as much his daughter as I was. Kenzi, content now that she had her coffee retired to the back seat of the car and settled in.

"Good call on the coffee Dad. How was the drive?" I said taking my own coffee and kiss from him.

"It wasn't too bad was it Eliza?" He walked to the rear of the car to make sure the trunk was secure before leading me to my seat. I thanked him and took my seat next to Kenzi. He closed the door and did the same for my Mother.

"Not bad at all." My mother said as she put her seat belt on. My dad got in and we began the 2 hour drive back home.

"How were your finals girls?" My mom asked a few minutes later

"Surprisingly easy and cut short thanks to the snow. Lo had way more than me." Kenzi said

"How'd you do Hun? My Dad asked glancing back at me

"I think I did well, had a few tough ones, lots of papers all very fun."

"I'm sure both did great." My Dad said hinting to my Mom that we didn't want to talk about school anymore. Thankfully she took the hint, and turned up the radio. A few minutes later my parents picked up a conversation they were having earlier.

"I miss her too you know." I looked over at blue eyes slightly confused

"Who?" I asked

"Bo you weirdo, I kinda miss her." I grinned at her; this was a bold statement coming from Kenzi.

"It's safe to say she's gonna miss you too. She was sorry she couldn't say bye to you."

"What was up with that? I thought she was leaving after we were?" She asked me

"There was an unexpected snow storm in her hometown so they cancelled the afternoon trains. She had to catch an earlier one." Kenzi frowned and then shrugged her shoulders

"How did it go the other night?" Kenzi winked at me and I tried to hide my blush as best as I could.

"I'll tell you about it later." I motioned towards my parents. I wasn't too comfortable talking about this subject while my parents sat a foot away from me.

"Fine, later, pizza will be involved." I rolled my eyes but agreed.

"LAUREN?! I have lots of pizza, where are you?" I was in my room engrossed in my book and wasn't as startled by the loud Russian girl as one would think I would be. Kenzi has been in my life for as long as I can remember, this was all normal by now.

"I'll come down." I yelled back to her. I put my book down and made my way towards the smell of greasy, gooey, goodness.

"How was the family?" I asked laughing at the fact that she already had a slice shoved in her mouth.

"They were the same as they always were." I grabbed two plates and handed one to Kenzi who thanked me and got comfortable. There were two large pizzas, one of which I knew would be consumed entirely by the small girl sitting crissed-crossed-applesauce on my kitchen counter.

"We do have chairs you know." I said taking a slice from the box that hadn't been opened yet, the dark haired girl just shrugged her shoulders

"If I fits, I sits." I shook my head at her

"I forgot you were part cat." I joked back

"I'm surprised your parents aren't attached at your hip right now." She replied after glaring at me

"Mom's at the hospital and Dad's with his editor. They'll be back late tonight or early tomorrow." I watch as Kenzi was holding a slice of veggie and a slice of pepperoni, debating which she should dig into next. Her eyes grew wide and she smiled to herself, I was about to ask what she was up to when she put the pieces together and started eating it like a sandwich.

"Don't give me that look Lo, I do what want." I laughed at Kenzi being Kenzi

"No judgments here, years from now people will question how they ever ate pizza before the Kenzi method." I replied

"What can I say I'm an innovator. Oh btdubs, you're totally giving me a patented Bo look." I raised my eyebrows at her and went to grab us a drink.

"When Bo makes fun of someone I've noticed that she gets this little grin, mischievous with a hint of innocence. You just imitated her to a T. It was kind of weird." She opened the bottle of water I had given to her and took a healthy sip.

"Should I be jealous, or freaked out that you pay that much attention to Bo?" She blushed and shook her head at me

"I like her okay, she can hold her liquor, she's chill, and she makes you happy. I like to pay attention to what's important, who's important, and Bo is clearly super important to you." It was my turn to blush; moments of honesty absent of sarcasm rarely came from Kenzi.

"I love you Kenz."

"Yeah, yeah, ditto nerd." We finished our pizza and were now in the small TV room that no one used but us. You sunk into the couch cushions, and I couldn't count how many times the two of us had accidentally fallen asleep on this couch. The TV was on but we weren't really paying attention to it. Kenzi had just finished telling me about the guy who had been texting her all week.

"So tell me about it." I was hoping Kenzi had forgotten about my promise in the car.

"What about it?"

"How was it? How was she, how were you?" I sighed knowing there was no getting out of this one.

"It was I don't know… It felt like I was right where I was supposed to be, like in that moment being with Bo, I knew.. I don't know. She was perfect. It was sweet and sexy, intense but a good kind of intense, and it was honest. I don't how to explain Kenz." Blue eyes smiled at me

"You knew what? You said being with Bo in that moment you knew." She asked, a softness to her voice

"I don't know." She raised her eyebrows at me

"Lauren, we've know each other our whole lives. I've never seen you like this; I've never seen anyone like this to be honest."

"Like what?" I questioned

"So in love, you are smitten Lauren Lewis. Just hearing you talk about her makes me feel all gooey inside. It's gross but in a sweet way." There was no hiding the color from my cheeks this time. She hit the nail right on the head.

"Its crazy right I'm crazy, falling for someone this fast? You're completely right, I'm in love with her, I'm foolishly in love with someone I met a week ago." It felt crazy to say it out loud, and saying it to Kenzi made it real for me. I had said it to Bo which was one thing but the reality of what those words meant set in.

"Out of context it sounds a little crazy, but seeing the two of you together it makes perfect sense. You're good together, I saw you smile and relax more this week than I did all semester; there's nothing wrong with that. So forget about how it sounds, and focus on how it feels." I pulled her into a hug. I'd be a mess without this girl.

"Wise beyond your years." I said. We stayed there for a few more minutes before we pulled apart

"Enough with all the fluff play zombie hunters with me." I shrugged and waited for her to set it up. I glanced down at my phone and sighed when I saw that I had no new texts. Bo said she'd text me when she was home and that should have been a few hours ago. She was probably tired or with Sawyer, or with her Aunt.

Not even 24 hours apart and I was acting like the girl who couldn't live without her boyfriend. I laughed at myself and welcomed the distraction of Kenzi and whatever video game she was making me play.

BO

"Don't look so sad, at least we got the table seat to ourselves." Sawyer tried to cheer me up for the third time today. It was a good effort but I couldn't help it. I missed Lauren like crazy. The stupid weather messed up the train schedule so we didn't have a proper goodbye. I didn't mind being home, especially now that I moved in with my Aunt and Uncle but I liked being at school, I was in a bad mood.

"I'm acting like a child, sorry S."

"It's okay to miss her, but we'll be back at school before you know it." Sawyer reminded me

"You're right I just need to man up." I cracked a smile and tossed an apple at her

"It's nice to see you so in love and crap." she said a moment later

"Who said I was in love?" She gave me a look that said I was full of shit

"Well to start with you and Lauren can barely keep your hands off each other, you're like fricken magnets where one goes the other can't help but follow. The first time I met her you both had messy hair, swollen lips and oh yeah your shirt was inside out. You spent basically the entire week glued to each other, when you met what 6 days ago? Let's see, uhm I have eyes. You two have mastered the art of eye-sex; one of you is probably pregnant right now that's how strong it is. Which good for you Babe. And oh yeah, I heard you guys say it to each other before we left." Normally after one of these Sawyer speeches I would be annoyed with her, angry even but how could I when she was right.

"Whatever, we don't have eye-sex." I took a bite out of my own apple and was glad we had time to grab a few snacks before we boarded.

"You know I'm right, that's why you're blushing."

"You're right this time, don't let it go to your head." I said to her

"I would never. So you guys have hot girl sex yet or?" I loved Sawyer I really did but she could be crass sometimes and at the moment a little too loud.

"Don't be such an ass." She put her hands up in defense.

"Sorry, I really do want to know, I mean you spent every night together... And ever since Tommy you've been closed off emotionally and that's clearly not the case with Lauren." She gave me an apologetic look

"I accept your apology jerk face." You could hear the crunch when she took the first bite of her apple

"Seriously, did you guys do the do or what?" I had to laugh at that one

"Do the do? That's a new one."

"Bo." I was avoiding and she knew it

"It was more than hot girl sex; it was like something I've never experienced before. That sounds ridiculous, but I don't know S, it was..."

"You and Lauren love each other, and not puppy love, real love… That makes it special, makes it real, better than any other time."

"That's exactly what I was trying to say. Why can't you be that nice all the time?" I said

"You love me, the sarcastic jerk face part of me included." she countered

"I'll keep you around for now...It's your turn." She arched her eyebrows at me in confusion.

"Why did we see Greg Peters the other night? What the hell happened?" She looked away from me

"We don't talk about the whys and whats, you know that." She wasn't wrong, but this was different.

"I've never asked before now, there was more to it than what I saw right? If you're really not ready to talk about I'll lay off, but I don't think that's the case." I held up the plastic shopping bag to her so she could throw the apple core into it, I did the same with mine and waited for an answer.

"Fine… You're not going to like what I have to tell you." She finally gave into me

"We're gonna be here for another four hours, we gotta talk about something." I got comfortable in my seat and prepared myself.

"I've been meaning to tell you this for a while now, but it's not something that you casually bring up… You know I was Professor Hart's TA for his classic literature course right?" Uh-oh, I didn't like the sound of this

"Sawyer, please don't say what I think you're going to say." She swept her hair over to one side and began braiding it; a nervous tick of hers.

"Remember we're on a moving train with lots of people on board… I uh, well, we've been sleeping together." If this was a TV show it would cut to commercial the second after she said that.

"Jesus, are you serious?" I forced myself to lower my voice, which was proving to be difficult

"I know it's bad, it's morally and ethically wrong and stupid on my part but just listen okay?"

"Explain." I said harshly. Sawyer had a tendency to get herself into unnecessary trouble.

"First off, Jacob's not that old, he's 31, and he's not married or engaged or anything like that. He's sweet, and funny, and good looking, and smart. We were safe every time, he didn't take advantage of me or trick me into sleeping with him, I wanted to just as much as he did. One day when I went to his apartment to give him coursework, he invited me in and one thing led to another. It just happened, and then it didn't for a long time. But you know me, I like doing what I'm not supposed to."

"Clearly… Sorry, continue." I couldn't help letting that one go.

"I'm not in love with him; I didn't fall for him... It was fun and dangerous, and not a big deal to me. But he started getting serious about a month ago, so I stopped it, well the sex part. I tried to resign as his TA but the school wouldn't let me so close to the end of the semester." All my anger disappeared when she looked up at me; there were tears in her eyes. I reached across the table and grabbed one of her hands.

"What aren't you telling me?" my voice dramatically softer when I spoke this time

"He got a little possessive, started showing up to my dorm, calling and texting me all the time. Wouldn't let me out of his during class." I made sure to hold eye contact with her when I asked my next question

"Did he hurt you?" She shook her head

"No, I told him if he continued stalk me I would tell the administration about us, even if it meant me getting kicked out. He left me alone after that." I squeezed her hand to comfort her and she smiled at me

"What does this have to do with the Wister statue golf cart incident?" I had almost forgotten my original question

"Well Gamma Phi had an end of the semester party with just the sisters and uh, things got a little out of control." Gamma Phi was the name of the sorority Sawyer was in, it was still surprising to me that she joined an actual sorority.

"And?" I asked wanting her to keep explaining

"Well they wanted to do something fun and I still had a copy of Jakes keys which included keys to the shed, golf carts and the Wister building… We partied for a while in Wister, and then had some fun with the carts. I guess all Professors get an alert when their TA's use their key cards, I never gave mine back to him so I guess he got suspicious and showed up. He told everyone but me to return to their dorms and he wouldn't report us. He got mad at me, and I got mad at him, we started arguing I got distracted. I left the cart running and then it kind of just crashed into the statue.. He went off on me and said he was stupid for getting involved with a student. He wasn't going to report me but he said it was my problem to fix. He left and then I went to find you."

"Why not just leave the cart where it was?" I asked

"I'd already gotten him in enough trouble; I didn't want him to get fired because of me."

"Okay… You're sure you're done with him?"

"Yes, I promise."

"I wish you told me about him earlier, I could have helped you. You're incredibly smart S, but sometimes you don't think. It could have been way worse you know that right? He could have been one of those pyscho guys you see on lifetime, you could've gotten hurt, you could have been expelled, he could have lost his job, you were lucky." She placed her free hand on top of mine. Her green eyes were tear free now

"I know I wanted to tell you. I was worried you might have forgotten about Greg, thanks for being so concerned."

"I was a mess this semester; I don't completely blame you for not telling me. I'll yell at you for this later, for now you're off the hook." I said to her.

"Are you going to Maggie's or your Dad's?" Sawyer said as we approached our train station.

"My Dad just got fired from another job so I don't feel like dealing with that yet. Maggie and Arthur are out of out town for few days but it's better than the alternative." Sawyer knew the full extent of my family drama, she never judged. She was always there for me and that's why we were friends.

"Are you gonna be okay being alone or did you want me to come over?" She asked while getting our bags from the overhead compartment

"You sure you'd want to?" I asked

"If you need me, there's nowhere else I'd want to be than with you." I took my bag from her and stood up just as the train was slowing to a stop

"Thanks jerk face, come over whenever." She laughed and pushed me towards the door.
