Chapter 24
When the trio was almost ready to head out the door, Deeks' cellphone rang. Kensi arched an eyebrow, holding Leo's hand as she waited on him.
"It's OPS." Deeks informed her after he'd dug his phone from his pocket. "What's happenin' Nelma?" He answered.
The nickname got a small laugh out of the tiny analyst before she turned serious again. "Hey, Deeks. Listen I was just looking over some stuff for the case that just came in; it doesn't really seem like a good day for Leo to be here at OSP. Not that we don't all love having him here, I just don't really think it'll be the best environment for a child, you know? It's a pretty serious case." Nell explained.
Deeks nodded. "Yea, no, I understand. And my usual babysitter is now available again so that won't be a problem. Thank you, Nell, for letting me know." He replied.
Leo gasped. "My Nelly? Tell her I sayed hi!"
"Leo says hi." Deeks chuckled.
"Aw! Tell him I said hello back. I swear, Deeks, you have the sweetest kid." Nell cooed. "And you're welcome. I was kinda worried you might be a little offended..." She admitted.
"Of course not, Nell. You're just lookin' out for us and I appreciate that. I'll see you in a bit." Deeks assured the woman, before hanging up.
"What was that about?" Kensi inquired.
"Apparently the case we're workin' today isn't exactly rated G. Leo's gonna need to go to Mr. Jason's." Deeks explained.
"But I no wanna! I wanna go to owps wiff you!" Leo immediately pouted.
The man dropped down to his son's eye level and frowned slightly. "I'm sorry buddy. But Daddy and Kensi have work to do today, and we can't bring you there with us." He explained.
"But I wanna go! I wanna see Nelly, and Uncle Cawwen, and Uncle Ewic, and Uncle Sam!" The boy whined.
"Leo," Deeks said with a firmer tone to his voice, "you can't go with us. I'm very sorry; I'd love to be able to hang out with you at OSP today and have fun, but Daddy and the team have grown up things to do." He explained.
"So? I wanna go wiff you Daddy!" Leo exclaimed, stomping his foot.
Deeks sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair. Kensi stepped over to them and crouched down next to her partner.
"Leo. Kensi and Daddy have a lot of really boring work to do. We're not gonna be able to play with you, and we're not gonna have any fun at all. We're going to take you over to Mr. Jason's so that way at least you get to have some fun, and then when we get home you can tell us all about your day, alright?" Kensi said in a strong yet gentle tone.
Leo pouted for another minute, before nodding. "Mtay. You can go wiffout me." He relented.
"Thank you, baby boy." Kensi smiled, pressing a kiss to the top of his head before standing up to her full height.
Deeks stayed still, watching Kensi with a broad smile on his face. Her skills with Leo surprised him; but maybe, he figured, it really shouldn't.
Kensi Blye kept turning out to be one surprise after another.
He stood up and wrapped an arm around her waist, tugging Kensi back into him. She let out a small 'oof' in surprise but melted into his embrace. Deeks pressed soft kisses to her neck, smiling all the while.
"And you thought you wouldn't be any good with him?" He asked teasingly.
"Well I haven't always been this good. There were rough days too." Kensi admitted.
"Hmm... well, believe it or not I'm not always perfect either. Some days are rough for me too." Deeks replied.
"You know what I think, Shaggy?" She whispered.
"Mmm, what's that?" Deeks mumbled against her neck, nipping his teeth softly against her skin; the tiny shivers that ran through her body made him smirk.
"I think, just like with everything else, we do better together." Kensi smile softly.
Deeks grinned at her, before glancing back at Leo. "Hey uh, buddy, you sure you got enough toys to take with you? Maybe you should bring a couple more." He told the little boy.
Leo's face brightened and he clapped happily before running off to his room. Deeks immediately turned back to Kensi and lightly pushed her against the wall.
"That'll give us a few minutes." He grinned cheekily at her, before leaning down to capture her lips with his.
Kensi smiled into the kiss at her partner's antics, before wrapping her arms around his neck and allowing herself to become overwhelmed by his kisses. His beard felt better than she expected it to, tickling more than scratching. Kensi also liked being able to run her fingers through his shaggy locks that she'll never actually admit to loving.
And judging by the small groan Deeks made, he also liked when she ran her fingers through his hair.
After several minutes of numerous kisses, Kensi managed to pry her lips away from his long enough to speak. "Deeks, we should really get going." She whispered, before his lips sought out hers again.
"Not yet." He mumbled softly, his arms around her waist tightening.
Kensi laughed and pulled away. "We're gonna be late."
"Don't care." Deeks shot back.
"The guys are gonna ask why."
"Traffic." Deeks grinned. "We live in LA, that's always an acceptable answer. I'll even let you blame me and nag about my supposed suckish driving."
"You don't drive nearly as fast as you could." Kensi commented.
He chuckled and shook his head at her, before kissing her again.
Marty Deeks was addicted to her kisses. And he was absolutely okay with that.
Kensi definitely wasn't complaining either.
"DADDY! Where my Dawf Bader toy is?" Leo yelled through the apartment.
Deeks pulled away laughing. "It's in your toy box!" He yelled back.
"OTAY!" The boy replied.
"He's never going to find it." Kensi laughed lightly.
"Mm, that sounds like more kiss time." He smirked, pulling her back to him.
"DADDY!" Leo yelled again.
"Dammit." Deeks mumbled half-heartedly, pulling away from her again. He really didn't like doing that. "What is it, buddy?" He hollered.
"I CAN'T FOUND DAWF BADER!" Leo yelled.
Deeks groaned softly as he caught sight of the clock as well. "I don't wanna go." He pouted at Kensi.
She rolled her eyes. "C'mon Deeks. We're adults. We have work and responsibilities to attend to."
He sighed. "Yes. Yes we do."
Kensi got a mischievous look in her eye and she stood up on her tip toes, bringing her lips close to his ear. "But after work... there's plenty of kiss time." She whispered lowly.
Deeks licked his lips and a wave of desire crashed over him as Kensi pulled away, smirking. "Ooh, you play dirty, Blye." He hummed.
She backed away, picking up her car keys and her purse. Kensi opened the door and arched an eyebrow at him confidently. "Did you expect anything less?"
He walked over to her and pressed one more kiss to her lips. "Nope." Deeks grinned.
"Good." Kensi beamed.
"As much as I hate to say it, and I really hate to say it, you better go. If you wait around here much longer I'm going to end up dragging you back in this house and who knows how long it'll be before I let you go back out." Deeks smirked, leaning against the door.
Her eyes flashed with desire and she smirked back. "Oh please, like you could force me to stay here." Kensi replied before quickly shutting the door.
Deeks chuckled and opened the door back up; he couldn't let her have the last word. That wasn't how this game worked.
He waited until he saw her walking towards her car in the parking lot to yell out, "Princess you've been in my bed for weeks. I don't have to force you to stay!"
Yes, Deeks knew there were people outside that would hear.
Yes, Deeks knew there was a chance Kensi would kill him.
But the look on her face when she turned to look up at him was priceless.
Kensi's face was all red and her tongue was stuck in her cheek; the best part was that Deeks could tell she couldn't think of a damn thing to yell back.
Finally, she went with flipping him off because she literally couldn't think of anything that would make her win this round of their banter.
"When and where, sugar bear? When and where?" Deeks stretched his arms out and grinned broadly.
She laughed and shook her head, before getting in her car and quickly driving away; eager to escape the nosey neighbors watching their banter.
Deeks walked back into the apartment smugly, smirking to himself. There were few things that made him as smug as besting Kensi Blye in their banter. Being Kensi Blye's boyfriend was the one thing that came to his mind.
As Deeks pulled into the parking lot of OSP, his phone vibrated; signaling a new text message. He put his car in park and grabbed the phone, quickly opening it.
Can we not tell the guys about us just yet? –K
It didn't surprise the surfer; he wasn't overly eager to tell the senior agents who thought of his girl as their little sister that they'd spent the night cuddled up in his bed.
But the thought sure did bring a smile to his face as Deeks shot back a quick reply.
Sure thing Princess ;) I'll be right in, in parking lot now. –D
The new agent grabbed his bag and threw it over his shoulder, thinking about everything that had changed in a short amount of time. Before he could talk himself out of it, Deeks shot Kensi another text as he walked into the building and into the bullpen.
You. Me. Dinner. Tonight. –D
"Mornin' all!" Deeks smiled happily at the team.
Sam arched an eyebrow and looked up from his laptop; Callen arched an eyebrow but didn't bothering looking up. Deeks shot Kensi a quick wink and sat at his desk, his leg bouncing as he stared at his phone; for some reason he was nervous she might not want to.
"What's got you in such a good mood?" Sam inquired.
"And do we really want to know?" Callen added.
Deeks laughed and a grin made its way onto his face. "It's a beautiful day! Sun is shining; birds are singing and all that good stuff." He explained.
"Uh huh." Callen nodded, not believing him for a second.
"Sure. This happy mood wouldn't have anything to do with whoever you're waiting for on the other end of the phone, would it?" Sam smirked knowingly.
Deeks arched an eyebrow. "I don't know what you're talking about." He shrugged, looking at the SEAL instead of his phone.
"Right. So who is it? A girl maybe?" Callen chuckled.
"Did she promise she'd call you?" Sam smiled.
"I'm not waiting on anything, you guys are crazy." Deeks defended himself.
Suddenly the phone lit up with a text message and the shaggy man quickly scooped up the phone, holding it close to his chest.
I'm going to kill you for what you did earlier. And sure; it's a date Shaggy –K
Deeks grinned before he could stop himself, and shoved the phone back in his pocket. He ignored her threat, Deeks was accustomed to it. And besides, directly after Kensi had promised a date; he was pretty sure that meant he wasn't dead yet.
Or maybe he was, and this whole being with Kensi thing was his Heaven.
Deeks didn't rule that theory out yet.
"What was that about?" Kensi asked, amused.
"That, lady and gentlemen, was a text confirming a date with an extremely beautiful woman." Deeks grinned. "Today is a great day." He added.
Kensi bit her lip and looked down, trying to keep from smiling.
"Oh really?" Callen chuckled.
"What's this beautiful woman's name?" Sam inquired.
Suddenly Eric whistled from upstairs and interrupted them. "All four agents are requested upstairs." The techie smiled.
Deeks grinned broadly and shot out of his chair, making it up the stair case first and high fiving Eric for his words.
When Nell said that it was a pretty serious case, she wasn't kidding; several murders with no suspects, leaving a lot of work for the agents. They'd all worked extremely hard on this case, trying to catch whomever it was before they struck again, but they'd come up with nothing even late that night.
They were all standing in OPS and it was going on nine o'clock that night. Callen looked around at his exhausted team and sighed.
"Guys, let's break for the night. Take a new crack at this tomorrow. Go home; get some rest." He ordered.
"Sounds good." Sam nodded. "Michelle's gonna be pissed I missed dinner." He added.
"Hey, I told you to call her earlier and have her meet you somewhere for a quick dinner break!" Callen objected, turning away to give Nell and Eric one last suggestion for a search to set up to run.
"Yeah, and five minutes after that we were rushing across town on some wild goose chase. On your orders I might add. Ima tell her it's your fault." Sam smirked.
Callen's face dropped and his head snapped back to his partner. "I will let you drive for a month straight with no complaints, I will do your paperwork for a week, hell I'll talk Hetty into giving you a week off, just don't tell Michelle it was my fault!" He begged.
The SEAL walked out grinning as the senior agent in charge followed closely behind. The other two agents walked out of OPS slower, bidding goodnight to the wonder twins with exhausted smiles on their faces. They'd chased down several leads but had come up with nothing.
"Hey Deeks..." Kensi started softly.
Deeks covered up a yawn and looked at his partner as they made their way downstairs. "What's up, Kensalina?" He inquired.
"About that dinner tonight, do you think it'd be okay if we didn't do it tonight? Truthfully I just wanna go home." Kensi admitted.
Deeks let out a sigh of relief. "That sounds amazing to me. Not that I don't wanna go to dinner with you, it's just been a long day... yea, no, going home sounds perfect." He agreed.
The senior agents had already left leaving the bullpen empty for their discussion. As Deeks picked up his bag he paused, looking back at his partner.
"Did you mean home as in like, your apartment or as in... my apartment?" Deeks inquired carefully.
Kensi looked at him for a moment before smiling softly. "I meant yours." She replied, and walked out.
He let out a slow breath as her words hit him. A smile worked its way on his lips and he quickly followed her out to the parking lot. Kensi was already in her car when he caught up. Deeks stopped her from leaving and she rolled down the window as he propped his arm on the door.
"How about you grab us something to eat while I go get Leo and get him tucked into bed. Then you and I can just... relax." Deeks suggested.
Kensi smiled. "Sounds good, partner."
He grinned back before leaning over and kissing her softly. Deeks groaned a little and pulled back. "You have no idea how many times I had to stop myself from doing that all damn day." He chuckled lightly.
"I'm just irresistible that way." She grinned.
"As if I didn't catch you staring at my lips, five times." Deeks grinned back, before stepping away and letting her drive off.
"I wasn't staring at your lips; I was wondering how you manage to talk so much without them falling off!" She called after him.
"I bet you'd be really upset if they did fall off; what use would they be to you then?" Deeks grinned, walking over to his car; he could hear her laughing before her window rolled back up and she sped out of the parking lot.
When Kensi let herself in with her key, pizza in hand, she was surprised at what she found. There was a few of her favorite candles lit and placed strategically around the room, low lighting that wouldn't add to her headache from the day, two beers on the table, and a DVR file of Top Model on the TV screen waiting to be viewed.
It was everything she needed to unwind from today.
Deeks walked in from the bedroom, wearing a white t-shirt and sweatpants, a small smile on his face at the sight of her.
"Hey." He greeted softly.
She smiled back and placed the pizza on the coffee table. "Hey yourself. Deeks this is all..." Kensi trailed off.
"It's not much. I didn't have a lot of time and-" Deeks started to ramble, but was cut off by Kensi's lips pressing against his.
She pulled away and smiled. "It's perfect Deeks. Exactly what I wanted to do."
"Good." He grinned. "How about you go put some comfy clothes on and I will start up Top Model." Deeks suggested.
"I will be right back." Kensi smiled back, before walking down the hall and throwing on one of his hoodies and a pair of shorts.
When she came back in Deeks was already settled into his spot on the couch, patiently waiting for her. He turned at the sound of her footsteps and chuckled. "I'm not gonna have any clothes left if you keep stealin' them, Blye." He teased.
"You'll just have to get new ones then, Deeks." She laughed, sitting beside him; grabbing a piece of pizza and her beer before cuddling into his side.
"You uh, you want a plate for that?" He teased her, grabbing his own.
"Oh shut up and play the show." Kensi snorted.
Deeks did as she asked before sinking back into the couch. "Is Leo asleep?" She inquired softly after a moment.
"Yea, he uh, he woke up when I was bringing him back over here but he didn't stay awake for much longer. Little man was out before his head hit the pillow." Deeks smiled fondly.
"I feel bad; I told him we'd listen to how his day was..." Kensi frowned.
"Hey, it's alright. He can tell us tomorrow." The shaggy man reassured her.
"Okay." She nodded, placing her bottle back on the table and whipping her hands on her shorts.
Deeks snorted at her manners but didn't dare say anything. She wrapped an arm around his waist as one of his went around her shoulders, holding her close to him.
"This feels so natural." Kensi admitted quietly. "It's so much better relaxing with you after a long day than by myself." She added softly.
"Yeah, it is better with you. And... you okay with natural?" Deeks inquired.
She looked up at him for a moment before nodding and placing her head back on his shoulder. "Yea, I am."
"Good, because so am I." Deeks replied, and the two of them became quiet as they tried to relax from their day; replacing thoughts of murders and suspects with kisses and the warmth of their partner.
